Delhi Experienced Third Worst Cold Spell In 23 Years: IMD

India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday said that Delhi experienced the third worst cold spell in the last 23 years and also gave a second cold spell warning from January 14.

Talking to ANI, RK Jenamani, Scientist, IMD said that Delhi experienced a cold wave right from January 3-9 which is almost 5 days.
“During these five days, the temperature was around two to four degrees. As per the data available with us, this was the third worst cold spell in 23 years. From the year 2000 to the year 2023, we find that the 3-9 Jan cold spell was the third worst cold spell in the last 23 years,” he said.

A cold spell means the number of days we experienced which is in the range of 5 to 6 days. A similar situation was there in the year 2006 when we had the lowest temperature of 1.9 degrees Celsius. In 2013 also, we had a similar cold spell, and January 3-9 was the third worst cold spell in the last 23 years.

IMD has also predicted rain, drizzle, and snowfall on January 12, and a second spell of cold spell on January 14.

Jenamani said that there will be light rain or drizzle in states like Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Western UP, and North Rajasthan.

“For the Himalayan states like Jammu and Kashmir mainly Kashmir, we expect heavy rain or snow on Jan 12. We expect rain or snowfall in Himachal and Uttarakhand between January 11-14,” he said.

He said that we are also giving a second cold spell warning from January 14th.

“There will be fresh cold spells over northwestern and Punjab. We have not confirmed but we are reviewing whether the daily temperature will further come down to three degrees or not. Western Disturbance is very active and there are chances that there might be a cold spell from Jan 14,” he said.

Jenamani further said that there will be clouding and fresh moisture pertaining to the Western disturbance.

“The Western disturbance is expected to hit over the western Himalayan region and also plane area during 11 to 14th Jan. It will lead to clouding and fresh moisture also. Because of the windy condition, the dense fog condition will improve further. There was dense fog at the Delhi airport in the past 24 hours. But in the main city, it was relatively lesser fog,” he said.

He further said that although the condition is improving, the worst condition persists over Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.

“So far, the condition is improving, but Bihar and Uttar Pradesh remain in the worst condition,” he said. (ANI)

Virat Equals Sachin's Record, Smashes 20th ODI Ton | Lokmarg

Virat Equals Sachin’s Record, Smashes 20th ODI Ton

Star Indian batter Virat Kohli slammed his 45th ODI century and overall his 73rd in international cricket on Tuesday.

The batter accomplished the landmark during India’s first ODI against Sri Lanka at Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati.
Virat’s 45th ODI ton is his 20th ODI ton on home soil. He has equaled the world record of legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar slamming the most tons in his home country. Both batters have 20 hundred each in home conditions. Virat took only 99 to accomplish this while Sachin did so in 160 innings.

Other than these two, Hashim Amla of South Africa (14 tons in SA in 69 innings) and Ricky Ponting (14 tons in Australia in 151 innings) also are on the list for most ODI tons in home conditions.

In the second ball of the 47th over bowled by pacer Kasun Rajitha, Kohli took a single to bring up yet another hundred, his back-to-back hundred in ODIs. He scored a ton against Bangladesh last month during the third ODI.

Kohli’s latest century came off 80 balls and comprised 10 boundaries and a six. His knock came at a strike rate of 125.00.

Virat was dismissed by Rajitha for 113, which came from 87 balls.

Virat also surpassed Sachin’s record of most ODI hundreds against Sri Lanka by an Indian batter. He has nine centuries against Sri Lanka, as compared to eight by Sachin against the island nation. Virat also has nine ODI tons against West Indies and eight against Australia.

Among the active players, Virat continues being the ‘Century King’, with a total of 73 tons. Other players that follow him are David Warner (Australia) – 45 Joe Root (England) – 44 Steve Smith (Australia) 42 Rohit Sharma 41 (India).

Virat was the highest scorer in the Indian innings with the team batting after Sri Lanka opted to ball first after winning the toss.

India finished at a mammoth 373/7 in 50 overs, with Mohammed Shami (4) and Mohammed Siraj (5) unbeaten.

Skipper Rohit Sharma started the year with a cracking 83 of 67 balls with the innings studded with nine fours and three sixes. Opener Shubman Gill (70 of 60 balls), Shreyas Iyer (28 of 24 balls), and KL Rahul (39 of 29 balls) also contributed some useful scores.

Rajitha finished with figures of 3/88 in ten overs. Madushanka, Chamika Karunaratne, skipper Dasun Shanaka, and Dhananjay de Silva took a wicket each.

The second ODI will take place on January 12 in Eden Gardens, Kolkata while the second will take place in Greenfield International Stadium at Thiruvananthapuram. (ANI)

Supreme Court on living will

SC Declines Urgent Hearing On Joshimath Subsidence

Everything important in the country can’t come to Supreme Court, said the top court on Tuesday as it declined an urgent hearing of the plea relating to the Joshimath sinking incident.

A bench of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and PS Narasimha said there are democratically elected institutions to look into the issue, as it posted the hearing for January 16.
“Everything which is important need not come to the apex court. There are democratically elected institutions working on it,” the top court said.

The court said this after the lawyer appearing for the petitioner mentioned the matter for an urgent hearing.

Earlier on Monday, the Supreme Court asked an advocate to mention on Tuesday a plea seeking immediate intervention by the top court to assist the reparation and providing of urgent relief to people of Joshimath in Uttarakhand, who are living in fear in the wake of a landslide and subsidence.

The plea was filed by Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati, a religious leader, seeking a direction to declare the current incidents of landslide, subsidence, land sinking, land burst, and cracks in the land and properties as a national disaster and direct the National Disaster Management Authority to support the residents of Joshimath at this time.

Several families were evacuated from Joshimath after cracks appeared in their houses in the wake of the subsidence.

The petition sought to provide immediate financial assistance and compensation to the people of Uttarakhand, who have lost their houses and land to subsidence.

“In the name of and/or for the cause of development the respondents have no right to push the people in the mouth of death and the religious sacred town in extinction and thereby infringe the fundamental right of the people of the Joshimath including the petitioner as well as inmates of his Monastery guaranteed under article 21, 25 and 26 of the Constitution of India,” it stated.

The entire mess of environmental, ecological, and geological disturbances occurred due to large-scale manly intervention in the form of Industrialisation, urbanization, and destruction of natural resources by the Union and State government in the State of Uttarakhand, the petition stated further.

It added, “No development is needed at the cost of human life and their ecosystem and if anything such is happening it is the duty of the State and Union government to stop the same immediately at war level.”

The petition was filed to “secure the life and personal liberty of the people of Joshimath town in the Chamoli District of Uttarakhand, wherein the life of the people is lurching large due to imminent and sudden cases of land subsidence, land sliding, the sudden eruption of water, cracking of houses and subsidence and cracking of agriculture plots resulted on account of man-made activities which given rise to recurrent natural calamities which were earlier very rare”.

“Issue direction to the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) to provide insurance coverage to the residents of Joshimath and to duly compensate the affected residents for the disaster caused by land sliding, land sinking, land burst, subsidence resulting into the cracking of houses and lands,” it added.

It also sought direction from the SC to the NTPC and Border Road Organisation (BRO) to rehabilitate the affected citizens at safer and more convenient places.

“Direct Centre, National Disaster Management Authority, Uttarakhand to take effective and proactive steps to protect the spiritual and religious and cultural places of Hindus including Sikhs at Joshimath; especially the Jyotirmath and adjoining sacred shrines/temples wherein deities are being worshipped since time immemorial,” the plea read.

“Direct the respondents to immediately stop construction and building work of the Tapovan Vishnugad Hydro Electric, Project tunnel and not to begin again till the high-level committee of geologists, hydrologists and engineers constituted by this court,” it added. (ANI)

Covid Memories

‘In A Swift, Cruel Stroke I Lost A Precious Partner, And I blame Central Govt For It’

As the threat from a new Covid variant looms, Indu Prakash Singh recounts his irreparable loss due to an inept Central healthcare system during the second pandemic wave

My wife, Renuka, a committed social activist, was admitted to the Jaypee Hospital, Noida, on April 24, 2021, during the peak of the delta wave. She died on May 18, 2021. She died because we could not get an ICU bed in any of the hospitals in Delhi, the national capital.

For Renuka, her work with the poorest, orphans, children, girls, and the homeless — was her passion. She had her first dose of CoviShield vaccination on April 3, 2021, and was constantly going out. Our friends say that Renuka should have protected herself but she wouldn’t sit at home. One of her colleagues had a partner who had tested Covid positive. She too contracted the deadly virus.

When we wheeled her into the hospital, I told her, “You are a fighter. You have to come back — victorious.” She assured me she would come back. She valiantly fought the virus. She would warn me: “Don’t come close.” She was not an untouchable for me, even at that time. While taking her to different hospitals from April 22, my mask kept falling. Both Pragya, my daughter, and Renuka would ask me to be careful. But how could I be?

Soon after admitting her to the hospital, I too developed a high fever; not surprisingly, I too tested positive. My biggest regret is that I landed up in the hospital on April 27. Renuka was on Bipap and would call up friends on different issues (AC not working, her throat going dry, asking for coconut water, etc.). She called me on April 28 and said: “Indu, I kept telling you to wear the mask properly and not come close to me. But you didn’t.” I reassured her that all will be fine. Once I come out of the hospital, I will take care of everything. But, it was not to be.

I got discharged from the hospital on May 6, 2021. I was impatient to meet her. I was asked by the doctors to quarantine for a week. My son, Manav, arrived from Dublin, Ireland. We went to see her when she was on the ventilator. She was not conscious. We don’t know if she heard us imploring her to fight; prayers for her wellbeing were not answered.

ALSO READ: A Delhi Covid Survivor Shares His Story

We lost Renuka due to a lack of oxygen supply, which was not there in the two hospitals we took her to in the first instance; one was a government hospital, and the other was private.

As per Renuka’s wishes, her last rites were performed at the Electric Crematorium in Delhi. No priest was involved. She always stood for human rights. She could never tolerate child labor or exploitation. She never minced words, never made the truth palatable. She would say it gently but say she would.

While she fought for human rights, Renuka never let it get her embittered. She was a happy person — deep down. She loved traveling, meeting people, befriending them, and inviting them over for lunch and dinner. Renuka was full of life and wanted the same for everyone.

She was a perfect partner. We lived happily. We had our differences, which never transmuted into fights. Deep down, we loved each other immensely even to this day, when she has moved into her divine abode.

Renuka leaves behind all of us, to carry on her mission. And she has the backing of her ‘thousands of daughters’, to carry the flame of change and transformation ahead, into time and space, far and wide.

Indeed, if another deadly wave strikes India, I think the ‘whole of society approach’ is the need of the hour. In all the phases of the pandemic, civil society played a major role. The Union government was clearly missing in action. The Opposition-ruled states were not fully supported by the Centre.

If there is a new upsurge of the virus, the poor will suffer hugely. They will yet again lose out on livelihood and hunger will loom large. They will have weak resort patterns to health. The most vulnerable fare the worst in all such emergencies.

We are aware of what happened after the first lockdown on March 24, 2020. It led to massive reverse migration of migrant workers. Many died on the way, killed by trains on railway tracks, of exhaustion, hunger, etc. Before Covid reached them, poverty had struck them hard.

The government must ensure that all its schemes reach the most vulnerable and poor: Dalits, tribals, Muslims, women, and children. That is the best and only way to deal with any emergency. There has to be a convergence of government departments and their schemes, entitlements, and services. So that, in any eventuality, the suffering of the most vulnerable gets reduced. Surely, I dream of the entire elimination of poverty.

(The narrator has been working for the homeless and is a member of the State Level Shelter Monitoring Committee in Delhi)

– As told to Amit Sengupta

Shraddha murder case

Shraddha Case: Judicial Custody Of Aftab Extended For Next 14 Days

Delhi’s Saket court on Tuesday extended the judicial custody of Aftab Poonawala, the accused in the Shraddha Walker murder case, for the next 14 days.

Saying Poonawala has requested some law books to study, the court has also directed the authorities to provide him with warm clothes.
On December 24, allowing the plea of Delhi Police seeking permission to obtain a voice sample of Poonawala, a Delhi court said even though a fair trial is a right of an accused but at the same time, a fair investigation is required in the larger public interest.

Metropolitan Magistrate Vijayshree Rathore of Saket court said, “True, a fair trial is the right of the accused but it is also true that fair investigation is also required in the larger public interest as the offence cannot escape and crime cannot go unnoticed merely because the accused is not ready to aid in the investigation.”

“Thus, the application moved by the Investigating Officer (IO) seeking permission for a voice sampling test of the accused is allowed,” the court said.

The court also referred to the decision of the Supreme Court of India in ‘Ritesh Sinha vs State UP’, clarifying its position that “judicial order compelling a person to give a sample of his voice is not violative of Fundamental Right to Privacy, under Article 20(3) of the Constitution of India”.

“It was further observed in the case that the Fundamental Right to Privacy cannot be construed as absolute and must bow down to compelling public interest,” the court noted.

The court said the contention of counsel for the accused that the consent of his client is mandatory, even in the case of the voice sampling test, cannot be accepted.

“It is clear that a voice sampling test can be conducted even if the accused does not consent to the same. An opportunity of seeking the will of the accused after informing the nature

of application moved by IO is already granted to the accused,” the court said.

The court further observed, “Even though the accused is not willing to give voice sample for voice sampling test, however, I am of the considered view that the accused can still be asked to give the voice sample to investigating agency for reaching the ends of the justice and also for a fair investigation.”

There is no such prohibition of compulsory consent of recording the accused in handwriting, fingerprint impression, and voice sampling test, the court said.

Poonawala is accused of killing his girlfriend, Shraddha, chopping her body, and dumping the remains in the forests of South Delhi’s Chhatarpur. (ANI)
