Budget Increased By 4 Times For Tribal Communities: Nadda

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National President Jagat Prakash Nadda on Friday said that the budget has been increased by four times for the tribal communities adding that for the past 70 years, no one cared for the tribals.

The BJP national president was addressing the Vijay Sankalpa Jansabha at Amarpur in the Gomati district.
Nadda said, “It is a matter of pride for the tribal society that today our president is Droupadi Murmu. For 70 years no one cared for tribals. I am happy that eight central ministers are tribals, our CM is tribal. For tribal communities, the budget has been increased by four times.”

“Union Budget 2023-24, the first budget of ‘Amrit Kaal’ is a blueprint for India’s development; it is filled with aspirations and a framework to make the nation’s economy truly inclusive and empowered,” he added.

The BJP national president also lauded the government for the progress in Tripura.

“Today we can say with pride that it is the ‘New Tripura’ with new aspirations. PM Modi has a special concern for North East. Tripura is moving forward under BJP’s rule,” he said.

“PM Modi had said that the state of Tripura could also make progress just like any other part of the country, and these five years stand as testimony to his very belief,” said Nadda.

Stating that a few years ago, Tripura was a land of insurgency, violence, bandh, strikes and terrorism, Nadda said, “Now, under the BJP rule, Tripura has become a state possessing Peace, Development and Prosperity.”

JP Naddu also launched a scathing attack on previous governments over a large number of scams.

He said, “How was India nine years back? India was a kneeling India, it was an India that could not take a decision. It was one of the corrupt countries where scams used to happen every day.”

“But in the last nine years under the leadership of Modi ji, India has become a country of aspirations, a leapfrogging country and a strong nation which can establish itself in the world,” he added.

Targeting the previous Congress and Communist rule in the state, he said, “There had always been corruption, violence, cheating and what not under the Congress’ rule, and under the Communists’ rule. They have both stood together now, both are corrupt. But the BJP has come ahead to save Tripura from the clutches of corruption and misrule.”

Meanwhile, the BJP is likely to release its election manifesto for Tripura in the next week.

BJP posted a stunning victory in Tripura in the 2018 Assembly elections, a Left bastion with Manik Sarkar being its Chief Minister for over two decades. After its poll victory, BJP appointed Biplab Deb as Tripura Chief Minister and in May 2022 appointed Manik Saha for the role.

The party is preparing itself to register another win in Tripura and has struck an alliance with its former ally Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) which has fielded its candidates at five assembly seats.

For the elections at 60 Assembly seats in the northeastern state, which are slated to be held on February 17, the BJP has fielded 55 candidates.

Former CM Manik Sarkar, hailing from the Communist Party of India (Marxist), would also contest the upcoming Assembly polls to the state.

According to party officials, several other BJP leaders will also campaign in the northeastern state.

Earlier on January 27, BJP held a CEC meeting in the national capital to finalize the names of the candidates for the upcoming Tripura Assembly elections.

For the first time, 11 women candidates have been given tickets in the state assembly election.

Tripura is slated to go to Assembly polls on February 16. Votes will be counted on March 2 along with Nagaland and Meghalaya. (ANI)

18,000 Held In Assam Over Child Marriage; CM Says Action Will Continue

Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday informed that the crackdown against child marriages in the state would continue in the coming days.

“Till 8 am, around 1800 people have been arrested in relation to child marriages in the state. This crackdown will continue for the next three to four days. The DGP will share the details of the crackdown with the press in the evening. Right now, even I do not have the details,” the chief minister said while talking to the media.

The CM further informed that the Director General of Police (DGP) shall share the details of the crackdown with the press on Friday evening.

“By evening, a clear picture shall emerge of the number of arrests as well as the action taken by us against them. The arrests made district-wise shall also be shared by the DGP in the evening,” the CM added.

The chief minister also talked about the National Cadet Corps (NCC) and National Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers who took part in the 74th Republic Day celebrations.

He said, “The NCC and NSS cadets take part in the Republic Day Parade. Only the selected students get a chance to take part in this parade. This time, the Assam NCC and NSS contingent went for the parade. I even met the NCC students who were under one month of training in Delhi. I met them today once again. A lot of hard work is needed to reach this position. I met everyone and extended my greetings.”

“It would be great if NCC was made compulsory. We still do not have the infrastructure big enough for people from the army, navy and air force to come and train and instruct people,” he added.

On the introduction of NCC in border schools, the CM said, “We have been asked to introduce NCC in all border area schools and colleges by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Slowly this will happen everywhere. Everything depends on the progress of the country.” (ANI)

Adani Group May Sue Hindenburg for 'damning' report

Adani Controversy: Both Houses In Parliament Adjourned After Ruckus

Proceedings of Lok Sabha were adjourned till 2 pm on Firday while those of Rajya Sabha were adjourned till 2:30 pm today due to opposition parties reiterating their demand for a joint parliamentary committee probe into the tanking of Adani Group company shares that has led to a stock market rout.

A number of Opposition leaders including Rajya Sabha Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge, DMK Rajya Sabha MP Tiruchi Siva, Congress MP Pramod Tiwari, BRS MP K Keshava Rao, Shiv Sena MP (Uddhav Thackeray faction) Priyanka Chaturvedi, Congress Rajya Sabha MP Dr Syed Naseer Hussain, and CPI(M) MP Elamaram Kareem gave suspension of Business notice to their respective Houses to hold a discussion on the allegations levelled by US-based Hindenburg Research against Adani Group.
When the Rajya Sabha assembled for the day, Jagdeep Dhankhar urged members to let the House continue with its designated business. However, as Opposition members raised slogans, he adjourned the proceedings till 2.30 pm.

In Lok Sabha, too Opposition members demanded a discussion but Speaker Om Birla disallowed it saying the House is to take up the important discussion on Presidential Address. As the opposition protest continued, the House was adjourned till 2 p.m.

Prior to the day’s session, Opposition parties held a meeting in the Parliament today.

Aam Aadmi Party MP Sanjay Singh described the Adani stock row as “corruption” and alleged that it is the corruption of the Narendra Modi government.

“I have given a notice under Rule 267 today also, and we demand the constitution of a JPC or a Supreme Court-monitored time-bound inquiry of the matter. It is not the corruption of Adani alone, it is the corruption of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government. Adani has the protection of PM Modi,” Singh alleged.

He further demanded an answer from the Prime Minister and said that he cannot “escape” the questions.

“Whose black money is this? If the Prime Minister is silent on the issue, his black money is there in foreign countries which are coming to India. Whose money was brought into Adani’s company through fake companies from the foreign land? PM Modi is surrounded by questions and cannot escape from answering,” the AAP MP said.

Speaking to ANI ahead of the day’s session, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said that there is no harm in demanding a JPC and a nudge from the Prime Minister’s Office would be sufficient for the constitution of a JPC.

“What is the harm in demanding the constitution of a JPC? The entire stock market has been reeling under total uncertainties. It is incumbent upon us to seek justice for the people of our country. It is easy to concede to our demand. Just a knock from the PMO is enough for the constitution of a JPC. The government should concede to the demand of the Opposition parties,” he said.

Congress MP Manish Tewari stressed on the probe by a Joint Parliamentary Committee into the alleged corruption and said that it is important that the JPC looks into the “India’s regulatory architecture which governs our financial system”.

“We do not want a talk out, we want a JPC not because it is individual specific, but we are concerned about the failure of the regulatory institutions that why an unknown company puts out a report and the markets react in this manner. Has there been a failure of RBI? It is important that a JPC should look into the efficacy of India’s regulatory architecture which governs our capital markets and our financial system. So, rather than come defensive, the government must agree to a JPC,” he said.

Shiv Sena MP (Uddhav Thackeray faction), when asked about the ruckus created by the Opposition in the Parliament, said that there will be a ruckus and alleged that the voices of the Opposition are being “suppressed”.

“If there will not be a ruckus on this issue, what other issue will the ruckus be for? It is a matter of looting the country. We will definitely create a ruckus when it comes down to LIC and SBI. The Parliament should run, and we will raise the issue. But our voices are suppressed. We are with the Congress demand for a JPC probe,” he said.

Congress MP K Suresh said that the government is “not ready” to give a statement on the issue.

“We demanded a statement from the government yesterday. But the government is not ready to give any statement or clarification. The House was adjourned after he demanded a discussion on the issue. Today also we are moving an adjournment motion on the matter,” he said.

Mallikarjun Kharge, ahead of the joint meeting of Opposition parties said, “We have called the meeting of the Opposition party. We will discuss the steps to be taken further. We give notices according to the rules.”

Yesterday, both houses of Parliament were adjourned for the day after the Opposition created a ruckus and demanded a discussion on the Hindenburg report on the Adani conglomerate.

The Opposition leaders on Thursday had demanded a discussion on the Hindenburg report against Adani Enterprises while also seeking the constitution of a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) into the alleged aberrations. (ANI)

China Spy Balloon

Canada Tracking Second Incident Of Suspected Chinese Spy Balloon

Canada’s Department of National Defence on Thursday (local time) said that it is working with the US to track a high-altitude suspected Chinese surveillance balloon, and it is monitoring a “potential second incident”.

“A high-altitude surveillance balloon was detected and its movements are being actively tracked by North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). Canadians are safe and Canada is taking steps to ensure the security of its airspace, including the monitoring of a potential second incident,” stated the Department of National Defence press release.
NORAD, the Canadian Armed Forces, the Department of National Defence, and other partners have been assessing the situation and working in close coordination.

Canada’s intelligence agencies are working with American partners and continue to take all necessary measures to safeguard Canada’s sensitive information from foreign intelligence threats.

Meanwhile, the US said that it is tracking a suspected Chinese surveillance balloon that has been spotted over US airspace for a few days, reported The Globe and Mail.

The Pentagon said that it decided not to shoot it down over concerns of hurting people on the ground.

Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin convened a meeting with senior Department of Defense leadership Wednesday to discuss the balloon, and it was decided not to take military action due to “the risk to safety and security of people on the ground from the possible debris field,” a senior US defense official said.

Responding to a media query about whether the balloon is from China or from any other country, a senior defense official said, “Yes, so, I mean, it is a surveillance balloon. And not to be — I’m not trying to be a wise guy. But the goal is surveillance. And clearly, they’re trying to fly this — this balloon over sensitive sites, one of which was just mentioned, to collect information. As I said, we do not judge that it provides significant value added over and above what they can currently collect in other means. But nevertheless, it’s something we’re watching closely.”

“It is not the first time that you had a balloon of this nature cross over the continental United States. It has happened a handful of other times over the past few years, including before this administration,” he added.

He also said with ‘high confidence’ that the defense department believed that the balloon is from China.

“So we do not doubt that this is a PRC balloon. And that is an assessment shared across our intelligence and analytic community. Why not shoot it down? We have to do the risk-reward here. So the first question is does it pose a threat — a physical kinetic threat to individuals in the United States or the US Homeland. Our assessment is it does not,” the defense official stated.

The defense official said the balloon was recently over Montana and that officials were considering bringing the plane down with military assets, but decided against doing so because of the risks associated, adding that US President Joe Biden was briefed on the situation and asked for military options, as per the statement.

Meanwhile, Pentagon spokesperson Brigadier General Pat Ryder said, “The United States Government has detected and is tracking a high altitude surveillance balloon that is over the continental United States right now. The US government, including NORAD, continues to track and monitor it closely. The balloon is currently traveling at an altitude well above commercial air traffic and does not present a military or physical threat to people on the ground. Instances of this kind of balloon activity have been observed previously over the past several years. Once the balloon was detected, the US government acted immediately to protect against the collection of sensitive information.”

The Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces issued a joint statement Thursday night that says the balloon’s movements were being actively tracked by the North American Aerospace Defence Command.

However, the statement doesn’t mention China or state whether the surveillance balloon flew over Canadian airspace. (ANI)

EV Lending Platform Looking To Expand Upto 25 States

As the Union Budget 2023-24 laid focus on green growth, EV lending platform RevFin, which finances independent drivers and owners for purchasing EV vehicles, is looking to tap the overlooked market by aiming to expand upto 25 states.

The government with an ambitious goal of market penetration in Electric Vehicles by 2030, is hopeful for faster EV adaptability.
India presently is amongst the top four countries emitting carbon dioxide apart from China and USA.

In her Budget speech on Wednesday, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said, “The Prime Minister has given a vision for “LiFE”, or Lifestyle for Environment, to spur a movement of an environmentally conscious lifestyle. India is moving forward firmly for the ‘panchamrit’ and net-zero carbon emission by 2070 to usher in a green industrial and economic transition. This Budget builds on our focus on green growth.”

An important reason for the surge in demand for EVs is considered to be their low emission, and it is an environment-friendly mode of transportation. It is not just expected to cut fuel bills but can also give a big contribution to India’s zero carbon emission commitment.

The Electric Vehicle industry in India which is currently valued at USD 3.21 billion is targeted to reach USD 76-100 billion by 2030.

From a sale figure of just 48,000 in the financial year 2020-21, EV sales saw a big jump to 2.37 lakh in the following year and doubled up to 4.4 lakh by the end of December 2022.

In this regard, RevFin, an advanced consumer lending platform has looked to tap the market that has largely been overlooked. They are financing independent drivers and owners in tier-2 and tier-3 cities and towns to buy EVs and operate.

“Our customers primarily consist of semi-urban and rural communities with a low level of education and no credit history,” national distribution head Nitin Kant told ANI.

He said that 85 per cent of the borrowers have no credit history, and out of that one-third are women.

“We have created more than 15,000 jobs across remote regions and impacted 5.3 million lives in four years. Our borrowers now earn double of what they used to. Now they can track and improve their productivity with our telematics-enabled vehicle security. This has impacted the lives of women in particular and the youth by creating a self-income sustainable model,” Kant further said.

RevFin has already given loans worth more than Rs 216 crore across 600 plus locations.

“The Fintech has partnered with 26 OEMs and Fleet aggregators and has 7 per cent of the national market share and with its aim to see mass adoptions of EVs, has plans to expand its geographical footprints,” he further said.

CEO Sameer Aggarwal said, “We look to expand our presence from the current 15 states to 25 states and gain a 20 per cent market share in 10 states from the current four. We strive to diversify our product profile and include electric 2W, 3W cargo, 4W, and eL5 vehicles, besides financing for e-Rickshaws soon.”

The Fintech underwrites loans using revolutionary techniques like psychometrics, biometrics and gamification.

“The entire loan application journey is delivered digitally through an app, and all vehicles financed by them have telematics which helps drivers track and improve their productivity while keeping their vehicles secure,” he added. (ANI)

US Must Show Sincerity To Help Sri Lanka: Chinese FM

After US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland during her visit to Sri Lanka said that the terms extended by China to Colombo for IMF debt relief are not enough, the Chinese Foreign Ministry has now retaliated saying that rather than commenting upon Beijing’s ties with Sri Lanka, US must show some sincerity and actually do something for the island nation.

In a regular press conference on Thursday, the Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning said, “What was said by the US side does not reflect the truth. The Export-Import Bank of China has already provided Sri Lanka with a letter to express support for its debt sustainability. Sri Lanka has responded positively and thanked China for that.”
The Chinese spokesperson warned Washington to stop jabbing fingers at China’s close cooperation with Sri Lanka and stated that US should also help Sri Lanka overcome difficulties.

“As a friendly neighbour and true friend, China has been closely following the difficulties and challenges facing Sri Lanka and providing assistance for its economic and social development to the best of our capabilities. As to Sri Lanka’s debt to the Chinese side, China supports relevant financial institutions in having consultations with Sri Lanka to seek a proper settlement. China stands ready to work with relevant countries and international financial institutions and continue to play a positive role in helping Sri Lanka navigate the situation, easing its debt burden and helping it achieve sustainable development,” Mao Ning said in the regular press conference.

China’s offer to Sri Lanka of a two-year moratorium on its debt is not adequate to clear the way for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to allow a funding program, Daily Mirror reported citing diplomatic sources.

Citing sources, the news report said that the IMF needs more assurances from China to secure IMF board approval for the bailout package for Sri Lanka. Earlier, China’s Foreign Ministry said that the Export-import Bank of China (EXIM) has extended debt to Sri Lanka.

In the early weeks of January, the Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka slammed the US after an American diplomat called China a ‘spoiler’ to Sri Lanka’s negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in a recent interview.

Notably, Julie Chung, the US Ambassador to China took a jibe at Beijing in an interview with UK-based television network, BBC Newsnight and said that the US is hopeful that China would not delay extending support for Sri Lanka’s debt restructuring process, as the island nation does not have time to delay, Colombo Gazette reported.

“For the sake of the Sri Lankan people, we certainly hope China is not a spoiler as they proceed to attain this IMF agreement,” Chung had said further.

In a press release on Tuesday, the Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka retaliated at Chung’s remarks and called them as “baseless accusing and lecturing.” It further lashed the US envoy for putting the blame on China for being the “spoiler” to Sri Lanka’s negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Instead of sowing discord between Sri Lanka and China, China questioned in its release why the US did not take decisive action in the IMF for a more comfortable solution for Sri Lanka. (ANI)

Allow Teachers To Travel Abroad For Training, Kejriwal Appeals Delhi LG

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday launched an attack on Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena and urged him to permit teachers and academic staff from Delhi government schools to travel abroad for training citing the example of the Punjab Government.

Thirty-six government principals of the Punjab Government are going to Singapore for five days of teacher training from February 6-10, 2023, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said in a press conference.
Kejriwal addressed the press conference and questioned Delhi’s LG regarding the non-clearance of the Finland file so far with respect to the proposal to send teachers abroad for training.

“The Delhi government has already provided training to more than 1000 principals/teachers from abroad and further wants to continue it,” he added.

Kejriwal reiterated that Delhi LG is now stopping the teachers of Delhi’s government schools.

“The Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court had ruled in July 2018 that no file will go to the L-G, but the Centre passed a law directing that they will; we have challenged this because it is unconstitutional. I hope that the L-G will allow teachers to go abroad till this decision is announced,” he further added. (ANI)
