The tag will help Kangra tea to get an opportunity to enter the European market. Kangra tea received the Indian GI tag in 2005. Since 1999, the cultivation and development of tea have improved constantly in the Kangra region of Himachal Pradesh.

“Today we registered a new Geographical Indication from India! EU-India. #Kangra tea is grown 900-1,400 meters above sea level, on the slopes of the Dhauladhar mountain range in the Western Himalayas. It has a nutty, woody aroma and a sweet aftertaste,” tweeted EU Agriculture.

The development and cultivation of Kangra tea are being promoted and looked after by four departments Tea Board of India Regional office Palampur, cooperative and agriculture departments of the state and CSIR, IHBT Palampur and Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Agriculture University, Palampur.

‘Kangra tea’ is a type of tea derived from the leaves, buds and tender stems of the Camellia sinensis species as cultivated in the Kangra valley (Himachal Pradesh, India).

‘Kangra tea’ leaves’ main characteristics are: a multi-stemmed frame, and narrow leaves. ‘Kangra tea’ is planted from seed stock raised in the Kangra valley and other selected varieties for the region.

‘Kangra tea’ has distinctive nutty, winter-green, woody floral aromas in its flavour profile. The ‘Kangra tea’ imparts a sweet aftertaste. ‘Kangra tea’ has a light colour and high body in liquor.

‘Kangra tea’ leaves contain up to 13 per cent catechins and up to 3 per cent caffeine and amino acids such as theanine, glutamine, and tryptophan.

The teas produced in the Kangra Valley are green, oolong, white and orthodox black types.

‘Kangra tea’ is produced in several areas located on the slopes of the Dhauladhar mountain ranges of the Western Himalayas. These areas are Palampur, Baijnath, Kangra, and Dharmshala in the district of Kangra; Jogindernagar in the district of Mandi, and Bhatiyat in the district of Chamba.

The Kangra area, as defined in this application, enjoys the very specific geographical conditions prevailing in the snow-clad Dhauladhar mountain ranges in the Himalayas. Altitude is one very specific feature of the area as all the tea plantations are set within the altitude range of 900 to 1400 m in the mountain ranges.

The Kangra area also yearly receives high amounts of rainfall. The city of Dharmshala and its surrounding areas are indeed recorded to be the second highest rain-receiving areas after Mawsynram of Meghalaya state in India. The average rainfall at Dharmshala ranges between 270-350 cm per year.

‘Kangra tea’ is produced using high efficient whole leaf-orthodox manufacture which means that ‘Kangra tea’ is made up of whole-leaf and flavor-enriched leaves with the highest content of polyphenols (catechins). (ANI)

Rajnath On Russia-Ukraine conflict

Ukraine Conflict Taught Us To Be Self-Reliant In Energy Needs: Rajnath

The energy crisis faced during the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict has drawn the world’s attention towards the importance of becoming self-reliant in energy needs, said Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday.

Singh said no matter how big and developed a nation is, if it is not self-reliant for energy needs, then there will be hurdles to its development.
Speaking at the agreement signing ceremony and launch of the 7th round of commercial coal mine auction organised by the Ministry of Coal in New Delhi, Singh said India is among the world’s fastest-growing economies and has become the fifth largest economy in the world.

In the future, due to urbanisation and industrialisation, Singh said more houses, schools, colleges, hospitals etc will be needed for the people. “Due to the government’s farsighted policies, the country has also attracted the attention of foreign companies, and we have emerged as a favourite investment destination of foreign companies,” he said.

And it going to lead to an unprecedented consumption of energy in the country in future. In view of these needs, the government has placed the energy sector at its highest position. These allocations and auctioning are very important steps in this direction, Singh said.

Highlighting the energy crisis that the world has faced due to Ukraine Conflict, the Defence Minister said that it is necessary to far-reaching efforts towards the energy security of the nation. And allocation and auctioning of coal blocks are very important steps to achieve energy security.

“The usage of coal has its advantages and disadvantages. Today’s climate change is a reality and it cannot be ignored. Coal is a polluting fuel but humans are exploring its alternative constantly. Many countries are requesting other nations to avoid using coal, and all of sudden developed countries are raising concerns about the environment. It is not a concern but it is climate hypocrisy,” he said.

India’s per capita carbon emission has been much less as compared to other countries since the beginning, Singh noted.

The thing to note about auctioning commercial coal mining is that for the first time in the last several decades, the public and private sectors have been brought together on a platform, the Defence minister said, adding that by opening coal mining for commercial use by the private sector, the government has shown its trust in the private sector and has given it a chance to the industry to prove itself. The private sector is progressing step by step with the government in many areas, he added.

“In the last eight to nine years, the government has encouraged private players and given them an opportunity to come forward in sectors like defence, which were considered completely untouched for private players, have also been opened for them today with equal opportunities. After ensuring participation in coal mining, private companies will move towards discharging their role in strengthening both the country’s energy security and economy,” added Singh. (ANI)

Trial Court Gave Time For Judicial Remedy: CEC On Election In Rahul’s Wayanad Seat

Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar on Wednesday said that the court has given 30-days time to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for judicial remedy after he was convicted in a criminal defamation case, and said that the commission will wait before announcing bypolls in the Wayanad parliamentary constituency.

“We have six months’ time to hold a by-election after a seat falls vacant. The trial court has given 30 days time for judicial remedy. So, we will wait,” Kumar said in a press conference here.
Rahul Gandhi was disqualified as MP from Lok Sabha on March 24 following his conviction by the Surat court in a criminal defamation case for the ‘Modi surname’ remark.

Asked about the Aam Aadmi Party’s status as the national party, the CEC said that its status is under review by the Commission.

When inquired about the Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, the CEC said that the commission is aware of the “vacuum” which needs to be filled.

“The SSR (special summary revision) was conducted on the date of October 1 in Jammu and Kashmir. SSR is conducted with a cut-off date of January 1 in the entire country. We did it there because we wanted to complete the process as fast as possible. This process is to bring them at par as far as the voter list is concerned with rest of the country. We are aware that there is a vacuum and that needs to be filled,” he said.

Earlier, the CEC announced the schedule for the Karnataka Assembly elections.

The polling would take place in a single phase on May 10, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar said on Wednesday.

The counting of votes will be done on May 13, the CEC said.

Detailing the data of the electors, the CEC said that there are a total of 5.21 crores in the state and the number of 100 plus voters is 16,976.

He informed that over 58,000 polling stations would be set up across the state.

“There are 224 Assembly constituencies of which 36 are reserved for the SCs and 15 for the STs. The total electorates in the state are 5,21,73,579 crores of which males are 2.62 crores and females are 2.59 crores. The total number of 80 plus electors is 12.15 lakhs. It is an increase of 32 per cent from 2018. It also includes 16,976 proud electors who are 100 plus. The number of persons with disabilities (PWDs) has increased to 5.55 lakhs. This is an increase of close to 150 per cent,” Kumar said.

He said that the first-time voters have increased from 2018-19 by 9.17 lakhs in Karnataka.

“All young voters who are turning 18 years of age by April 1, will be able to vote in the Karnataka Assembly elections,” he said.

The CEC also laid down the security measures for the identified sensitive booths in the state.

“There are 58,282 polling stations in Karnataka of which 20,866 are urban. The average number of electors per polling station comes to 883. On all the sensitive booths which have been identified, we take four to five measures. Either there would CAPF, or web-casting or a micro-observer. With the combination of all of these, we tend to put more vigour and vigil on the sensitive booths,” he informed.

“There would be 240 model polling stations which will be made eco-friendly and green booths. 100 booths would be managed purely by persons with disability,” Kumar added explaining the measures taken by the ECI for attracting the youth to vote. (ANI)

same-sex marriage impact on society

Legalising Same-Sex Marriage Will Impact Society: Former Judges

A group of former judges of high courts on Wednesday issued an open letter saying the legalisation of same-sex marriage in India will have a devastating impact on society at large.

“We are a group of former Judges, the conscientious and concerned citizens of India, having been exasperated and agonised over the continuous onslaught against the basic tenets of Bharatiya marriage traditions and family system by vested interest groups, write to you to draw your kind attention towards one such issue — legalisation of same-sex marriage,” the letter said.
The letter said the issue is being considered by the Supreme Court and has gained momentum in the recent past in the country after being referred to a Constitution Bench.

“The people of the nation, hailing from various strata of society across regional and religious lines, are deeply shocked by this western-tinted outlook that is being superimposed on Bharatiya society and culture to weaken the family system,” the letter said.

The group of former judges said the marriage as well as the family system in India is sui generis. They opined that legalising same-sex marriage will strike at the very root of the family system and thus will have a devastating impact on society at large.

Unfortunately, certain versed interest groups having no knowledge and regard for the civilizational importance of marriage have approached the court praying for legalizing of same-sex marriage. Any attempt at weakening a great and time-tested institution should be opposed vociferously by society, the letter said.

Indian cultural civilization has constantly been attacked for centuries but survived against all odds. Now in independent India, the group of retired judges said it is facing attacks on its cultural roots by the superimposition of western thoughts, philosophies, and practices.

“The cancerous problems that the West is facing are sought to be imported into Bharat by vested interest groups through the misuse of the judiciary as an institution in the name of the right to choose. While perusing the discourse on the issue of same-sex marriage, it is pertinent to take lessons from nations across the globe, specifically, the American experience where per its own official figures published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the HIV Surveillance Report, for 2019 and 2020, it has been reported that 70 percent of new HIV-AIDS incidence in the country was amongst the gay and bisexual men,” the letter said.

Therefore, legalizing same-sex marriage might lead to an exponential rise in the number of HIV-affected. Giving priority to the right to choice and personal liberty over the right to life may cause severe consequences in the future, said the group of former judges.

They claimed recognition of same-sex marriage will change the entire gamut of all personal

laws from marriage to adoption and succession. In the long run, there are serious concerns that the gene pool is also going to be weakened affecting the entire human race, especially in terms of collective herd immunity and progressive evolution.

Instead of having wide-range discussions and deliberations amongst the stakeholders and without there being any vociferous demand from any section of society, such a hasty judicial intervention is unfortunate, and totally unwarranted, stated the letter.

“In view of the above, it is our concerted opinion that such a sensitive issue concerning the society at large be debated in the Parliament and State legislature as well. Even before bringing

such kind of law, the opinion of the society must be obtained to ensure that the law must represent the wish of the society and do not fulfill the desire of few elite sections of the society,” read the letter by the former judges.

“We thus respectfully urge the conscious members of the society including those who are pursuing the issue of same-sex marriage in the Supreme Court to refrain from doing so in the best interest of Indian society and culture,” urged the group of retired judges.

The 21 signatories of the open letter include former Chief Justice of Rajasthan High Court Justice (retired) SN Jha, Justice (retd) MM Kumar, former Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir High Court, Gujarat Lokayukta Justice (retd) SM Soni, and Justice (retd) SN Dhingra. (ANI)

Amritpal Singh's Video

Amritpal Singh’s Video Surfaces, Says He Will Continue His Fight For Sikhs

Amid the manhunt for Khalistan sympathizer Amritpal Singh, a video has emerged of Amritpal Singh where the Waris Punjab De head is seen thanking Sikh Sangat for the support he received from Sikhs globally.

In the video, where he is seen wearing a grey shawl and a black turban, Singh reasons why he was unable to send any message owing to internet shutdown in Punjab. “I wanted to send my message across but the Internet was shut down,” he is seen saying in Punjabi.

Amritpal criticizes Punjab government and police for atrocities and mass arrests in the wake of his escape from their attempt to round him up. Drawing parallel with the Beant Singh Government, Amritpal rues the sufferings of Sikh community.

He says that police picked up even women and physically challenged in order to curb the voices in his support and forcibly draw information regarding his whereabouts.

In the nearly three-minute video, he also vows to continue raising his voice against injustices meted out to the community and appeals Sikhs to struggle unitedly.

Centre Swiftly Puts Activists, Journos In Jail; But Amritpal Was Given A Long Rope, Why?’

Jagrup Singh Sekhon, a writer, academician & political observer, says the way Amritpal was given a free run despite openly challenging the State, raises questions behind his rise. His views

Undue publicity has been given to Amritpal Singh and there seems a pattern repeated from the past. The recent violence in Ajnala, Punjab, organized and executed by his followers, was instigated by him – that is clear. One should therefore look at the ideological lineage of this violence.

Deep Sidhu – who was he? Everybody knows what his political allegiance was. His pictures were all over the media with top leaders of the ruling party at the Centre and Sunny Deol, BJP MP from Gurdaspur, Punjab. One should check his role in the peaceful and protracted farmers’ movement in which tens of thousands of farmers from Punjab participated.

The core of the movement was led by progressive and democratic forces. It was a non-violent, mass movement from below. So, what was Deep Sidhu doing in this progressive and Left-backed movement with his allegiance so widely seen and proved?

When the farmers were detained on the Punjab and Haryana border, during their protest against the three controversial farm laws, how come Deep Sidhu was allowed to enter Delhi on the Republic Day, 26 November, 2020? His alleged instigations to his followers a day before the tractor march led to the unfortunate incident at the Red Fort. It is believed that it was an attempt to malign the peaceful movement and divert attention of the struggling farmers from their core demands.

These are the questions we must ask when we try to understand the current case of the rise of Amritpal Singh.

Who is Amritpal Singh and from where has he emerged suddenly? Why was he given so much media attention in the first instance despite his aggressive and provocative statements, including justifying violence? When he even challenged the government openly and brazenly, how come no action was taken? So many peaceful dissenters, journalists, human rights activists and critics of the BJP are languishing in prison! So how come Amritpal Singh was given such a long rope by the Indian State?

ALSO READ: ‘Sikhs Understand The Agenda of Amritpal Singh’

Religious polarization and communal politics are a thing of the past in contemporary Punjab which wants peace, and has been peaceful after suffering for so long under the spell of violence, from both sides, that is, State and non-State actors. The Sikhs have suffered the most, especially Jat Sikhs.

The Indian State has a massive, armed, security apparatus. Almost 50 per cent of the total area of Punjab is under the border belt, which directly comes under the control of Centre for security purposes. The State has a 553-km long international border with Pakistan which is one of the major reasons of the suffering and tragedy of the people of Punjab, as it made them the structural victims of the Partition of the subcontinent in 1947.

Akali Dal has always proclaimed itself as the protector of the Panth, but, now, it has lost its political relevance – it has been rejected by the people. The Congress has also been rejected by the people. The BJP was never a major player in the state. A section of supporters of the weakened Congress have thereby shifted to the BJP. In this context, AAP has emerged. However, it has no organizational base – which the BJP has. Hence, the BJP is desperately trying to enter Punjab – this way or that.

Even after the violence, aggressive and inflammatory statements, no case was registered against Amritpal Singh. Why? Just look at the extremely harsh steps they have taken against Rahul Gandhi! Anyone who dares to speak out is hounded in this country under the current dispensation in Delhi. So, why was Amritpal Singh being allowed to roam free and make provocative speeches and incite violence so brazenly – that is the main question!

The narrator is a former Professor in the Dept of Political Science, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. He has co-authored Terrorism in Punjab – Understanding Grassroots Reality (along with Harish K Puri and Paramjit S Judge), Har Anand Publications
