NASA Announces Four-Member Crew For Lunar Mission Artemis II

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) on Monday introduced the four astronauts, who will be a part of the lunar mission, Artemis II, next year.

The four astronauts will now begin training for the historic Artemis II lunar flyby, which is scheduled to launch in November 2024. This will be the first crewed moon trip in fifty years.
The astronauts are Jeremy Hansen of the Canadian Space Agency, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Reid Wiseman of NASA. NASA has named the first woman, who is also one the world’s most experienced spacewalkers and the first African American ever assigned as an astronaut, making the lunar mission quite special, CNN reported.

Reid Wiseman of NASA, a 47-year-old decorated naval aviator and test pilot was first selected as an astronaut for the space organisation in 2009. He will serve as commander of the Artemis II mission.

Hansen, 47, a fighter pilot was selected by the Canadian Space Agency for astronaut training in 2009. Notably, he will be the first Canadian ever to travel to deep space.

Glover, a 46-year-old navy aviator, made his first trip into space in 2021, flying SpaceX’s Crew Dragon on its second crewed mission and spending nearly six months at the International Space Station, reported CNN.

The fourth crew member is Koch. Six spacewalks have been completed by Koch, 44, including the first all-female spacewalk in 2019. With 328 days in space, she holds the record for the longest solo spaceflight by a woman.

The Artemis II mission will significantly expand upon Artemis I, an unmanned test mission that culminated in December and took NASA’s Orion capsule on a 1.4 million-mile journey to lap the moon.

Although the precise distance has not yet been calculated, the trip is anticipated to take around 10 days and will transport the crew beyond the moon, possibly further than any person has ever traveled, CNN reported. (ANI)

World Bank India's GDP Forecast

World Bank Cuts India’s GDP Forecast By 30 BPS

World Bank in its latest India Development Update report has cut India’s growth forecast for 2023-24 to 6.3 per cent from earlier 6.6 per cent.

India’s growth, World Bank, said, is expected to be constrained by slower consumption growth and challenging external conditions.
“Rising borrowing costs and slower income growth will weigh on private consumption growth, and government consumption is projected to grow at a slower pace due to the withdrawal of pandemic-related fiscal support measures,” it said in a release on Tuesday.

However, it maintained that India’s growth continues to be resilient despite some signs of moderation in growth. It notes that although significant challenges remain in the global environment, India was one of the fastest-growing economies in the world.

“The Indian economy continues to show strong resilience to external shocks,” said Auguste Tano Kouame, World Bank’s Country Director in India.

“Notwithstanding external pressures, India’s service exports have continued to increase, and the current-account deficit is narrowing,” added Kouame.

On India’s inflation, it said although headline inflation is elevated, it is projected to decline to an average of 5.2 per cent in 2023-24, amid easing global commodity prices and some moderation in domestic demand.

“The Reserve Bank of India’s has withdrawn accommodative measures to rein in inflation by hiking the policy interest rate. India’s financial sector also remains strong, buoyed by improvements in asset quality and robust private-sector credit growth,” said the release.

Retail inflation in India fell marginally but remained above RBI’s 6 per cent upper tolerance band for the second straight month in February 2023, with the Consumer Price Index pegged at 6.44 per cent. In January, the retail inflation was 6.52 per cent.

India’s retail inflation was above RBI’s 6 per cent target for three consecutive quarters and had managed to fall back to the RBI’s comfort zone only in November 2022.

At the latest Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the RBI in early February, it decided to raise the repo rate, the rate at which it lends to banks, by 25 basis points to 6.5 per cent to manage inflation. So far, RBI raised the repo rate, the rate at which it lends to banks, by 250 basis points cumulatively since May 2022.

Further, World Bank said the Indian government is likely to meet its fiscal deficit target of 5.9 per cent of GDP in 2023-24.

The general government deficit is also projected to decline. As a result, the debt-to-GDP ratio is projected to stabilise.

The current account deficit is projected to narrow to 2.1 per cent of GDP from an estimated three per cent in just concluded 2022-23 on the back of robust service exports and a narrowing merchandise trade deficit, World Bank said.

“Spillovers from recent developments in financial markets in the US and Europe pose a risk to short-term investment flows to emerging markets, including India,” said Dhruv Sharma, senior economist at World Bank and the lead author of the report, adding, “But Indian banks remain well capitalised.” (ANI)

Shakib Al Hasan IPL 2023

Shakib Al Hasan Opts Out Of IPL 2023

Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has opted out of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 owing to international engagements and personal reasons, reported ESPNCricinfo on Monday.

Shakib informed Kolkata Knight Riders of this development on Sunday. After the franchise receives approval from the IPL, it will start the process of looking for a replacement. He was bought by KKR for Rs 1.50 crore during the IPL 2023 auction last year.
Shakib will be active throughout the next several hectic weeks for Bangladesh. While competing in a home T20I series against Ireland, he and keeper-batter Litton Das already missed Knight Riders’ opening game of the season against Punjab Kings. The two will also be taking part in Bangladesh’s one-off Test match against Ireland starting on Tuesday. After that, Bangladesh will embark on a tour of the UK, where they will take on Ireland in three one-day internationals in Chelmsford on May 9, 12, and 14.

According to what is known, Shakib informed Knight Riders that he would be playing for Bangladesh at this time and that he also had “personal issues to attend to” that would prevent him from attending the IPL.

The new situation also draws attention to Litton, who was also signed by the Knight Riders during the December 2023 player auction. Litton will participate in the same two series against Ireland as Shakib, but for the time being, he is still a member of the Knight Riders team. Whether Das will also refuse to participate in the IPL has not been confirmed or made clear.

The IPL had alerted clubs about the availability of foreign players on December 22, the day before the auction. The IPL had been told at the time about the “restricted availability” of Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) players. The Bangladeshi athletes chosen for the Ireland series will be “available from 8 April to 1 May,” the BCB informed the IPL.

The media was informed by Knight Riders on March 18 that Shakib would be travelling in India following the third Twenty20 International against Ireland on March 31, and Litton would follow after the lone Test match, which will take place from April 5-8.

However, Shakib was later selected for Bangladesh’s Test team, which limited his availability to the KKR.

Knight Riders only have six foreign players in their squad without Shakib, including Litton. Due to a back ailment, the team’s full-time captain Shreyas Iyer will be missing for at least the first half of the season, severely hurting the team’s ability to perform.

This season, Knight Riders have only played one game, which they lost to Punjab Kings in Mohali because to rain. Their following match is scheduled for Thursday against Royal Challengers Bangalore at home in Kolkata.

In his IPL career, Shakib has played 71 matches, having scored 793 runs at an average of 19.83. He has two fifties to his name. He has also taken 63 wickets in his IPL career. He was also the part of KKR side which won IPL in 2012 and 2014. (ANI)

Priyanka: Can’t Work With People I Don’t Like | Lokmarg

Actor Priyanka Chopra has always been vocal about her thoughts and opinions.

During a press event of her web series ‘Citadel’ in Mumbai on Monday, the global icon made an honest confession about her work style. She said that she cannot work with people she doesn’t like.
“I think for me what would be non-negotiable now – it’s actually really true. I can’t work with people I don’t like anymore. It’s really non-negotiable for me,” Priyanka said when she was asked what were “non-negotiable” terms when it came to signing a project.

“I have to admire, look up to, like the people I am surrounded with. I have been doing this for a very long time. I want to be excited about going to work, I want to be inspired about going to work, and that has become non-negotiable for me,” she further said.

Priyanka also said that it’s important for her to work with individuals she has an affinity for.

“So when I meet the people I am going to work with, I take notes, in my little pads. But that truly is something that, as I have evolved, has become truly important to me,” she added.

Priyanka is in India for the promotional tour of ‘Citadel’, which also stars Richard Madden.

Created by The Russo Brothers, the action-packed show revolves around two elite agents Mason Kane (Richard Madden) and Nadia (Priyanka) of the global spy agency Citadel.

Sharing details about the show, Priyanka said, “The story is closely interwoven with the stunts. What’s so exciting about these huge action pieces was that they are infused with drama and storytelling. We get to see a lot about these characters, how they physically interact, not just great action sequences but there’s drama at the heart of each one of them, so there’s a story sort of interwoven in all the stunts. And that was just very cool and new for me.”

‘Citadel’ will be out on Prime Video on Friday, April 28. (ANI)

Covid-19 fresh covid cases

Japan To Curb Covid-19 Border Controls On May 8

With its decision to categorize COVID-19 as a common disease, Japan on Monday announced to end the current border control measures on foreign tourists from May 8, Kyodo News reported.

Travelers arriving at five major airports — Narita, Haneda, Chubu, Kansai and Fukuoka — will be subject to the new framework, which is set to start when the legal status of COVID-19 is downgraded to the same category as seasonal influenza early next month.
With an aim to normalise social and economic activities, Japan government will simultaneously start a new genomic surveillance program, under which entrants with symptoms such as fever are tested voluntarily to detect new infectious diseases, as per Kyodo News.

Currently, foreign tourists are required to present certification of three COVID-19 doses or a negative coronavirus test taken within 72 hours of departure.

The end of the COVID-19 border controls, which were first implemented in February 2020 and are regarded by some as the most stringent among the Group of Seven industrialised nations, is anticipated to aid in the revival of inbound tourism in Japan, where it fell to a fraction of the record 4.8 trillion (USD 36 billion) in 2021.

Japan tightened border restrictions by prohibiting entry of nonresident foreigners and requiring returning Japanese citizens and foreign residents to quarantine at certain facilities, once the country started to experience cases of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus in November 2021, read a report published in Kyodo News.

In late December, Japan introduced blanket COVID-19 testing for all arrivals from mainland China amid an explosion in infections in the country after Beijing drastically relaxed its stringent “zero-COVID” policy that had involved lockdowns and quarantines, read a report published in Kyodo News.

In early January, it further tightened border controls for visitors from the region by requiring proof of a negative test, but in March, however, the Japanese government ended the blanket testing for such visitors but started random testing at airports after finding that the number of those testing positive for COVID-19 had dropped.

Government officials claim that it takes a few weeks for test participants to receive their genetic test results.

Ahead of the across-the-board lifting of border control measures, Japan will ease those on all arrivals from mainland China from Wednesday and give them the option of entering the country by presenting proof of being inoculated with three doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, it added. (ANI)

Mamata Banerjee was on visit to Purba Medinipur on Monday where she distributed public welfare services to the people.
Addressing the gathering here, Banerjee said, “Here the Central Forces came, stayed in a five star hotel, instigated riots. They then held a meeting with BJP people and returned. Before their arrival, first of all ask should them that where is the money for 100 days employment (MGNREGA)? First tell that, then come to Bengal to incite riots.”

Banerjee urged the people to not vote for BJP in the upcoming Panchayat polls and 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

“I will do everything for you (people), but you are requested not to support BJP, the party that create riots, in Panchayat elections and 2024 elections,” she added.

India Moves Closer Towards $300MN Weapons Deal With US For Its Navy

India is moving towards clearing a proposal to buy American weapons including the Hellfire missiles and Mark 54 anti-submarine torpedoes for its MH-60 Romeo multirole helicopters.

24 of these choppers have been contracted for by the Indian Navy in a fast-track deal worth over USD 2 billion in 2020 and they have to be equipped with weapons for carrying out operations.
The proposal for buying the weapons package for the MH-60 Romeo choppers is at an advanced stage in the Defence Ministry and negotiations are also going on with the American administration for the USD 300 million deal to be concluded under the Foreign Military Sales route, defense officials told ANI here.

The Hellfire missile is a precision-guided missile and has been used by American forces against high-value targets including major Islamist terrorists like Al Jawahiri. The MK 54 lightweight torpedoes are used by US surface ships, fixed-wing aircraft, and helicopters, and are their primary anti-submarine warfare weapon.

It is already inducted into the Indian Navy’s P-8I anti-submarine warfare and surveillance planes.

India and the US had signed over-Rs 16,000 crore deal to buy 24 MH-60 Romeo helicopters from Lockheed Martin in 2020 under fast-track procedures on a government-to-government deal to hasten the process.

The 24 MH-60 Romeos would be equipped with multi-mode radars and night-vision devices as well as armed with missiles, torpedoes, and other precision-guided weaponry.

The MH-60s are going to replace Sea King choppers which would be on their way out of the force very soon.

The MH-69 helicopters can operate from frigates, destroyers, cruisers, and aircraft carriers.

The choppers are designed for an anti-submarine role as well as anti-ship tasks and conducting search-and-rescue operations at sea. (ANI)
