Shraddha Case: Aftab Charged With Murder

Delhi’s Saket court on Tuesday framed murder charges against Aftab Amin Poonawala for killing Shraddha Walkar and causing the disappearance of evidence.

Meanwhile, the accused has denied the charges and claimed a trial in the matter.
Shraddha Walkar was allegedly murdered by Aftab in the Mehrauli area on May 18, 2022. Her body parts were thrown into the jungle of the Chhatarpur Pahadi area in the national capital and was arrested in November 2022.

Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Manisha Khurana Kakkar framed the charges under Sections 302 and 201 IPC for murder and disappearance of evidence.

The court said that there is sufficient material and prima facie a case is made out against the accused.

“Do you plead guilty or claim trial,” the court asked to which Poonawala said, “I don’t plead guilty and will face the trial.”

Thereafter the court listed the matter trial and recording of prosecution evidence on June 1.

Advocate Akshay Bhandari had argued that the accused can’t be charged together for the main offence of murder and of the destruction of evidence. These two charges can be framed in alternate. This fact should be considered while framing of charge.

He also argued on the basis of the judgement of the superior court that the accused can’t be sentenced for the main offence and offence of destruction of evidence.

The accused can’t be charged for both offences together as it would prejudice his right, the counsel argued.

Advocate Seema Kushwaha had moved an application on behalf of Vikas Walkar, father of Shraddha for releasing the bones of the deceased.

He has also sought early exhibit of the bones so that the bones can be released to him to perform the last rites within one year of death. Delhi police will file a reply on the next date.

The owner of the property where the offence was committed had also approached the court seeking de-sealing of the said premises.

On April 3, the court took on record of the copy of the judgement filed by the Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) Amit Prasad and Madhukar Pandey.

SPP Amit Prasad had submitted that there is a clear judgement that the charge under section 201 of IPC can be framed against the person who destroys the evidence to shield the main offender as well against the person who committed the main offence.

On the earlier date, the counsel for accused Aftab had argued that the charges of murder and disappearance of evidence can’t be framed jointly. These charges can be framed alternatively.

Advocate Akshay Bhandari had argued that either Aftab can be charged with murder or for making the evidence disappear. The accused cannot be charged for murder and disappearance of evidence under Sections 302 and 201 of IPC together, the counsel argued. It can be framed alternatively.

Advocate Bhandari had argued that merely saying that “I (Aftab) am guilty of murder” is not sufficient. They have statements of eyewitnesses only. The Prosecution has to show the manner in which the crime was committed.

SPP Amit Prasad rebutted that the joint charges can be framed under section 201 for disappearing the evidence.

He had also submitted that the relied upon a chain of evidence, statement of witnesses, a record of past events and circumstances, forensic evidence, manner of offence etc were submitted before the court.

Delhi Police concluded its arguments on a charge of murder and the disappearance of evidence against the accused. (ANI)

‘The Kerala Story’ Goes Tax-Free In UP, MP

The Uttar Pradesh government will make the recently released film ‘The Kerala Story’ tax-free in the state, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced on Tuesday.

“‘The Kerala Story’ to be made tax-free in Uttar Pradesh,” CM Yogi said in a tweet.
The Chief Minister along with his cabinet colleagues is expected to watch the film at a special screening.

Madhya Pradesh had made the movie tax-free in the state on May 6.

Stating that the ‘The Kerala Story’ “exposes the conspiracy of love Jihad, religious conversion and terrorism,” Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had said that the newly released movie has been made tax-free in the state.

“The Kerala Story exposes the conspiracy of love Jihad, religious conversion and terrorism and brings out its hideous face. The film tells how the daughters get entangled in the trap of love jihad in momentary sentimentality and how they are ruined. The film also exposes the design of terrorism. This film makes us aware,” the Chief Minister said in a video posted on his official Twitter handle.

The movie is not being screened in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.

The West Bengal government in a notification on Monday said that the movie ‘The Kerala Story’ is “likely to cause a breach of peace” and that it has prohibited the screening of the film to avoid “any incident of hatred or violence to maintain law and order in the state”. (ANI)

West Bengal Bans ‘The Kerala Story’ To Avert Violence In State

The Trinamool Congress government in West Bengal banned the film ‘The Kerala Story’ citing “maintenance of peace” and to avoid incidents of “hatred and violence” in the state.

West Bengal became the first state to ban the film, which narrates the ordeal of three women who are trafficked to ISIS camps after being converted to Islam through marriage.

There’s a continuing political outcry around the movie even as it has been made tax-free in BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh.

On the decision to ban the film, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, “It is to avoid any incident of hatred and violence, and maintain peace in the state.”

Also raking up the ‘Kashmir Files’, a film on the alleged genocide of Kashmiri Pandits, which ran to packed houses despite evoking protests from the Opposition, the Bengal CM said, “What was ‘The Kashmir Files’? It was meant purely to humiliate a particular section of society. What is ‘The Kerala Story’? It is a distorted story.”

The CM directed the state chief secretary to remove the movie from all theatres where it is being screened.

Reacting to the ban, Vipul Amrutlal Shah, the producer of the film, said they will pursue legal options against the decision.

“If state government won’t listen to us, we will explore legal avenues. However, whatever course we take will be based on legal advice,” Shah told ANI.

Helmed by Sudipto Sen and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, the film evoked sharp opposition from Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who called it “RSS propaganda”.

Congress MP from Kerala, Shashi Tharoor accused the makers of “misrepresenting” Kerala.

Campaigning for the BJP in poll-bound Karnataka, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, too, weighed in on the controversy, accusing the Congress of standing with terrorists.

‘The Kerala Story’ stars Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani, Siddhi Idnani and Sonia Balani in lead roles.

A massive controversy erupted around the film after its trailer claimed that 32,000 women from Kerala had gone missing and joined the terrorist group ISIS. However, in the face of protests, the contentious figure in the trailer was later withdrawn.

Its trailer description was later changed to a story of three women from Kerala. (ANI)

Anurag Thakur

‘Standing Up For Terrorists’: Thakur Taunts Mamata Banerjee

Union Minister Anurag Thakur on Monday condemned the West Bengal government for banning ‘The Kerala Story’ movie in the state, and accused the opposition parties of doing “appeasement and vote bank politics”.

“Their (opposition) face is getting exposed. They are doing appeasement and vote bank politics. West Bengal has done immense injustice by banning the movie. Recently only, a girl was raped and murdered in Bengal. Everybody saw how her body was dragged by the police,” the Information and Broadcasting Minister told ANI.

“I want to ask what are you (Mamata Banerjee) getting by standing up for such terrorists. What do you get by promoting such an ideology? Such actions provide support to ISIS and other terrorist forces,” he added.

He further said that ‘The Kerala Story’ is an attempt to bring the truth forward in front of the people.

“The Kerala Story is an attempt to bring forward the truth. The movie leaves you stunned. It shows how Indian daughters are trapped in the name of love, and recruited in terror organisations. The girls are taken showing heaven but are instead sent to hell,” the Union Minister said.

Helmed by Sudipto Sen and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, the film has triggered a massive political row with various leaders reacting to the upcoming movie.

The controversy surrounding the film started when its trailer claimed that 32,000 women from Kerala had gone missing and joined the terrorist group ISIS. This statement triggered a heated political debate and many leaders questioned the veracity of the claim.

“And the makers of the movie have tried to expose this conspiracy. If a terrorist conspiracy like this is taking place in a big state like Kerala. It is the responsibility of everyone to come together in support of this movie, so that not just we are able to defeat such forces,” Thakur further said.

Earlier in the day, Trinamool Congress (TMC)-led West Bengal government banned ‘The Kerala Story’ movie citing “maintenance of peace” and to avoid incidents of “hatred and violence” in the state.

West Bengal has became the first state to ban the film, which narrates the ordeal of three women who are trafficked to ISIS camps after being converted to Islam through marriage.

There’s a continuing political outcry around the movie even as it has been made tax-free in BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh.

“This to avoid any incident of hatred and violence, to maintain peace in the state,” Mamata Banerjee said while addressing a media conference.

“What is ‘The Kashmir Files’? it is to humiliate one section. What is ‘The Kerala Story’?… It is a distorted story,” she added.

Mamata Banerjee said, “What is this ‘Kerala files’? I am not supporting CPIM, they are working with BJP. Instead of me, it was their duty to criticise the film. I want to tell Kerala CM that your party is working with BJP and that same party is showing Kerala files – a distorted story. Now I am told they are preparing the Bengal files. First, they defamed Kashmir, then Kerala, and now West Bengal”.

The Chief Minister has directed the Chief Secretary to remove the movie from the screens where it is running.

Reacting over the decision, Vipul Shah, the producer of the movie has said they will pursue legal options against the decision.

“If state government won’t listen to us we go through legal terms what possible things we should do that but as a legal way,” he told ANI.

‘The Kerala Story’ stars Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani, Siddhi Idnani and Sonia Balani in the lead roles. Faced with backlash the makers then withdrew the figure and called the movie the story of three women from Kerala, in its trailer description. (ANI)

Manipur Situation

High-Level Probe To Fix Responsibility For Manipur Violence: CM

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Monday urged people to maintain peace while informing that a high-level inquiry will be conducted to hold those responsible for the violence to account and also act those who failed to discharge their responsibilities in containing the unrest.

In his first public reaction to the ethnic clashes that have put the Northeast state on the boil, the Manipur CM also thanked Union Home Minister Amit Shah for monitoring the situation and sending central forces to restore normality at the earliest.

He assured media persons that those stranded in the ongoing violence were being provided with the best possible care.

The Manipur CM added, “Around 60 people have lost their lives so far while 231 have suffered injuries in the violence. Also, about 1,700 houses were burned down in the unfortunate incidents (rioting) on May 3. I appeal to the people to restore peace and calm to the state.”

He also appealed to the people not to block or obstruct the movement of public transport.

“Those stranded at different locations in Manipur are being provided the best possible care and support. They are being moved to safe locations and shelters. Till now, 20,000 such persons have been evacuated and about 10,000 remain stranded,” Singh said, adding that a high-level inquiry will be conducted to fix the responsibility on those behind the violence.

“A high-level inquiry will be conducted to fix responsibility on persons/groups behind the violence and government servants who failed to discharge their responsibilities. I appeal to all not to spread or believe unfounded and baseless rumours. Till now, 35,655 persons, including 1593 students, have been moved to safer locations,” the CM said.

The chief minister also assured that the government machinery was working round the clock to resolve the situation and restore order and MLAs and ministers were also making sincere efforts to bring back peace.

“I appeal to the public to extend their maximum cooperation to paramilitary and state forces. I also appeal to them to create a safe and conducive environment to enable affected families to return to their homes. I sincerely thank the honourable Home Minister Amit Shah on behalf of the government. He has been monitoring the situation from the first day of violence and has sent several companies of central forces to the state to restore order,” Singh said.

Several state governments, including those in the Northeast, are working on plans to evacuate their citizens out of the violence-hit Manipur.

Meanwhile, Internet services remained suspended in the state and curfew continued to be enforced in violence-hit regions.

Some relaxations to the curfew, which were introduced on Sunday to enable people to purchase items of daily need, continued as well on Monday.

Clashes erupted in the Northeast state after the high court directed the state government to consider including the majority community of Manipur in the list of Scheduled Tribes (STs).

Amid the demand of the Meitei people for ST status, a rally was organised by the All Tribals Students Union (ATSU) Manipur on Wednesday, which later turned violent. (ANI)

Gilgit Baltistan

Chinese Trade Delegation To Visit Gilgit-Baltistan Next Week

A Chinese delegation is all set to travel to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) Gilgit-Baltistan region next week to explore the options for buying and importing cherries, Commercial Counselor, Pakistan Embassy, Beijing, Ghulam Qadir said, reported The Nation.

15 members of the delegation from China, basically Chinese buyers hailing from Xinjiang, Zhejiang and Shandong provinces as well as the Weifang area will arrive in the region on May 15, Qadir told APP.

They will meet local farmers, and relevant officials and visit cherry orchards and inspect the quality of the exotic fruit, he added.

Pakistan and China signed a cooperation protocol during Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to Beijing in November last year. Under the protocol, China will import cherries from Pakistan and help the local grower enhance production.

Currently, China imports the bulk of its cherries from South American countries to meet growing demand. However, the transportation cost and time is a major predicament, reported The Nation.

Qadir also said the annual demand of the Chinese market is around 350,000 metric tons but Gilgit-Baltistan produces around 5,000 metric tons of cherry per season.

Meanwhile, Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang is in Pakistan for Pakistan-China Foreign Ministers’ Strategic Dialogue.

During the dialogue, the Chinese foreign minister told Pakistan to overcome political differences to pave the way for economic progress, Voice of America (VOA) news reported.

“We sincerely hope the political forces in Pakistan will build consensus, uphold stability and more effectively address domestic and external challenges so it can focus on growing the economy,” Qin said, addressing a press briefing alongside his Pakistani counterpart, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.

Pakistan is facing intense political turmoil since former prime minister Imran Khan was ousted a year ago in a parliamentary vote of no-confidence. A lack of consensus between Khan’s party and the 13-party ruling alliance led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif regarding the election schedule has plunged the country into a political and constitutional crisis.

The country also is mired in a crippling financial crisis. To help Pakistan revive a stalled bailout deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and avoid default, China has provided relief by rolling over debt and parking funds there to boost dangerously low foreign exchange reserves. (ANI)

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy

Evil Russia Will Be Defeated Like Nazi Germany: Zelenskyy

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy vowed that the “evil” Russia will be defeated just like Nazi Germany was beaten in World War II, according to the Kyiv Post.

In a speech to mark Victory in Europe Day, Zelenskyy said, “All the old evil that modern Russia is bringing back will be defeated just as Nazism was defeated,” Zelensky said in a video statement standing in front of a war memorial.

“Just as we destroyed evil together then, we are destroying a similar evil together now,” he added.

Zelenskyy also announced that he had submitted a Bill to parliament to formally commemorate World War II in Ukraine on May 8 and celebrate Europe Day on May 9. This is yet another step to distance his country from the traditions of Russia, reported Kyiv Post.

His address comes on the anniversary of Nazi Germany’s surrender to Allied forces on May 8, 1945, and one day ahead of Victory Day in Moscow, which celebrates the Soviet Union’s victory in World War II.

Meanwhile, on Twitter, Zerlenskyy tweeted, “It is on May 8 that most nations of the world remember the greatness of the victory over the Nazis. The world admires all those who were protecting and protected life. Who threw down the Nazi flags on the liberated territory and who opened the gates of the concentration camps. Who restored freedom to the nations, who destroyed and condemned Nazi evil.”

“It is on May 8 that the world honours the memory of all those, whose lives were taken by that war. It is pure history, without ideological admixtures. And it is the history of our people, our allies, the entire free world. Today, we are returning it to our state. Today, I submitted a bill to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine proposing that May 8 be the Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism in the Second World War of 1939-1945,” he added.

The Ukrainian President conveyed his condolences to all those people who died in the Second World War. “Glory to each and every one who fought against Nazism and won! Glory to all our heroes of different times, to whom we equally owe our lives!” he added.

Meanwhile, Russia fired eight long-range missiles at the city overnight Sunday, Ukraine’s air force said in a statement, CNN reported.

At least one person was killed and three were injured in that missile attack which strikes on the southern port city of Odesa on Monday, according to the spokesman for the head of the regional military administration.

“A guard at the warehouse where an enemy missile hit was killed. His body was found under the rubble,” the spokesperson wrote on Telegram.

“Around midnight, the Russian occupiers attacked Odesa Oblast with Tu-22M3 long-range bombers. A total of eight missiles were launched from the area of Cape Tarkhankut (occupied Crimea),” the air force said, adding: “Some of the missiles did not reach their targets,” according to CNN. (ANI)

Earlier, while addressing a rally in poll-bound Karnataka, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that ‘The Kerala Story’ movie is based on a terror conspiracy.

The Prime Minister said that the film ‘The Kerala Story’ shows the ugly truth of terrorism and exposes terrorists’ design. He added that the film is based on a terror conspiracy.

He also hit out at the Congress party and said that Congress has shielded terrorism for the vote bank.

“Congress is opposing the film made on terrorism and standing with terror tendencies. Congress has shielded terrorism for the vote bank”, PM Modi said.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan earlier said in a statement that the movie was deliberately made with the aim of creating communal polarisation and spreading hate propaganda against Kerala.

Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that the newly released movie has been made tax-free in the state stating that the ‘The Kerala Story’ “exposes the conspiracy of love Jihad, religious conversion and terrorism.”

Helmed by Sudipto Sen and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, the film has triggered a massive political row with various leaders reacting to the upcoming movie.

‘The Kerala Story’ stars Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani, Siddhi Idnani and Sonia Balani in the lead roles. The trailer of Sen’s film ‘The Kerala Story’ came under fire as it claimed that 32,000 girls from the state went missing and later joined the terrorist group, ISIS.

Faced with backlash the makers then withdrew the figure and called the movie the story of three women from Kerala, in its trailer description. (ANI)

MiG-21 Crashes In Rajasthan: 2 Dead

Modi on 2024 elections

Cong Is Talking Of Separating K’taka From India: Modi

Levelling fresh allegations against the Congress party, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday accused the party of demanding the “separation” of Karnataka from the country.

The Prime Minister was addressing his last election rally during the Karnataka campaign.
Addressing the gathering, PM Modi said, “When it comes to working against the interests of India, the royal family of the Congress party is at the forefront. They openly incite foreign powers to influence the politics in India”.

“In this election, Congress has said that they want to protect the sovereignty of Karnataka. It means that Congress is advocating for Karnataka’s separation from India. The disease of the ‘Tukde Tukde’ gang will reach this high in Congress, I had never thought,” he added.

He further accused the Congress party of “insulting” the Kannada freedom fighters who participated in India’s freedom struggle.

“Congress has a history of dividing brothers, making states fight among themselves, and leaving no stone unturned in inciting communal violence. Whenever Congress party comes to power, the confidence of terrorists and criminals get emboldened. They are assured of being protected by the Congress party. We have seen how Congress has repeatedly come in support of terrorists,” he said.

The Prime Minister also slammed the Congress party for “abusing” the OBC and Lingayat community.

“All they can see is Vote Bank politics. What they did with Bajrang Bali, that is also a result of appeasement. We all know what they did with Ram Temple. When we promote the pilgrimages of Kashi Vishwanath, Kedarnath and Ujjain Mahakal Mahalok, Congress feels displeasured,” he said.

PM Modi added, “India has been a world power in terms of spices since ancient times. But, under Congress we were even losing the identity of our turmeric. BJP has promoted our spices across the world, and now demand is again increasing”.

The Prime Minister further said that there is “no corner” in the state of Karnataka, where BJP’s “prosperous development” is not visible.

“When India’s defence sector started strengthening, then Asia’s biggest helicopter factory came in Karnataka. When India became the third biggest ecosystem in the world, Karnataka became the startup capital. When railways progressed in the country, then its development also picked pace in Karnataka,” he said.

He further added that for Karnataka, the election is about creating a new history and making Karnataka the number 1 state in the country.

“For Karnataka, this election is about creating a new history. This election is about making Karnataka the number one state in the country. And, I am happy that the people of the state have reposed faith in BJP’s double-engine government,” the Prime Minister said.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi also addressed a rally in Shivamogga, during the last phase of the campaigning for the assembly elections in Karnataka.

Karnataka will go to polls on May 10 and the votes will be counted on May 13. (ANI)
