Rahul Gandhi

Rahul to Modi: If This is Amrit Kaal, Why Are Jobs Vanishing?

Former Congress MP Rahul Gandhi took a swipe at the central government on Sunday asking if this is the ‘Amrit Kaal’ as portrayed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, why are jobs decreasing in India.

“If this is really ‘Amrit Kaal’ then why are jobs disappearing like this? The country is grappling with record unemployment under this government. The hopes of lakhs of youth are being crushed for the benefit of a few capitalist friends,” a rough translation of Rahul Gandhi’s tweet in English read.

The former Congress MP highlighted in his tweet that the central government is neglecting the Public Sector units (PSUs). He supported his argument with the help of extensive data on the loss of employment in PSUs.

“PSUs used to be the pride of India and used to be the dream choice of employment for every youth. But, today these are not the priority of the government. Employment in PSUs has come down from 16.9 lakh in 2014 to only 14.6 lakh in 2022. Do jobs decrease in a progressive country?” he wrote.

Lambasting the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, he said that those who promised to provide 2 crore jobs every year, eliminated more than 2 lakh jobs.

Attacking the government on increasing contract recruitment in the PSUs and thereby taking away the right to reservation, Rahul wondered whether it is a ‘conspiracy’ to privatize the companies.

“Is increasing contract employees not a way to take away the constitutional right of reservation? Is this a conspiracy to privatize these companies? Debt waiver for industrialists, and clearing government jobs from PSUs! What kind of immortality is this?” he said.

Rahul said that the country is grappling with record unemployment and the hopes of lakhs of youth are being crushed for the benefit of a few capitalist friends.

“If the PSUs of India get the right environment and support from the government, they are capable of increasing both the economy and employment,” Rahul suggested adding that the PSUs are the property of the country and the countrymen and hence they have to be ‘promoted’.

On March 18, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the people of this generation did not get an opportunity to sacrifice their lives during the freedom struggle, but now they have a chance to work for a strong, developed and inclusive India in this “Amrit Kaal”.

PM Modi was speaking at the inauguration of the year-long celebrations of the centenary year of the Malayalam daily Mathrubhumi via video-conferencing. (ANI)

Babita Phogat

Wrestler Babita Phogat Calls Sakshi Malik ‘Congress Puppet’

Olympian wrestler and BJP leader Babita Phogat issued a statement on her Twitter handle on Wrestler Sakshi Malik’s video, posted on Saturday, calling her a “Congress puppet”.

In the video posted yesterday, Sakshi Malik and her husband wrestler Satyawart Kadian thanked Babita Phogat for supporting the wrestlers’ protest and working as a mediator between protesting wrestlers and the central government.

In a tweet, Babita Phogat refuted the claims made by Sakshi Malik and her husband.

“Yesterday I felt very sad and laughed too when I was watching the video of my little sister (Sakshi Malik) and her husband, first of all I want to make it clear that the permission paper which was shown by her, I have nothing to do with it and neither it has my signature,” Babita Phogat wrote in her tweet.

“I have been saying from day one that have faith in the Prime Minister and the judicial system of the country, the truth will definitely come out. As a female player, I was always with all the players of the country and will be, but I was against the protest from the beginning. I had told all the wrestlers that you should meet Prime Minister or the Union Home Minister, and the solution will come from there only,” Babita said.

She also alleged that Congress leaders are using the emotions of protesting wrestlers for political benefits. Babita also attacked Sakshi and called her a “Congress puppet”.

“But you found your solution in @DeependerSHooda @INCIndia and @priyankagandhi, and others who themselves are guilty of rape and other cases, but the people of the country have now recognized the faces of the opposition. The opposition should now answer to all those soldiers, farmers and women wrestlers with whose emotions they have played for their political benefit.

“With all the prejudices, the thoughts of the women players who were sitting together on the dharna were given such a direction where only political benefits are visible. Today, when this video of yours is in front of everyone, the people of the country will now understand that on the auspicious day of the inauguration of the new Parliament House, your protest and attempt to immerse the medal in the Ganges was like embarrassing the country,” she said.

“The people of the country have understood that you have become a puppet in the hands of Congress. Now the time has come that you should tell your real intentions because now the public is asking you questions,” Babita added.

A few minutes later, Sakshi Malik also tweeted on her Twitter handle, attacking BJP leader Babita Phogat, she said that Babita was using wrestlers’ protest for selfish reasons.

“In the video, we taunted Tirath Rana and Babita Phogat that how they were trying to use wrestlers for their selfishness and how when the wrestlers were in trouble, they went and sat on the lap of the government. We are definitely in trouble, but our sense of humour should not become so weak that we cannot even laugh at the jokes of the powerful,” Sakshi Malik tweeted on Sunday.

Earlier on Saturday, Satyawart said in the video, “We have been protesting against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) Chief Brij Bhushan Singh because he sexually abused women wrestlers. He has also been involved in many scams while running the wrestling federation. A narrative is being peddled against us, rumours are being spread and a section of the media is putting out misleading reports. The purpose of this video is to share our truth.”

Satyawart said their fight is against Brij Bhushan, who was accused of sexual harassment by multiple women wrestlers.

“We have said many times that our fight is not against the government but the WFI chief, who committed the crimes as was alleged while at the helm of the federation,” Satyawart added.

He claimed about 90 per cent of people associated with wrestling were aware of the “things being done to women wrestlers for the last 10 to 12 years”.

“I can say for certain that 90 per cent of people associated with wrestling, including the wrestlers themselves and their coaches, were aware of what was happening to our women wrestlers for the last 10 to 12 years. Some coaches have come out with evidence before the media as well,” he said.

Further clarifying on claims that there was politics at play behind the wrestlers’ protest and they were instigated by Congress leader Deepender Hooda, he added, “We were first accused of a protest inspired by politics. It was said Congress leader Deepender Hooda instigated us to launch the protest. We launched this protest in January and sought prior permission from two BJP leaders. We have proof of that.”

Sakshi, too, clarified why the wrestlers didn’t come out against the alleged sexual harassment earlier, saying, “We were accused of being quiet for too long. However, there are many reasons for it. We were not united and secondly, there were minors among the victims. She (the minor wrestler, who accused Singh of sexual harassment and whose complaint a POCSO case was filed against him) gave her statements under IPC sections 161 and 164. However, she later retracted her statement as her family was threatened,” Sakshi said in the video.

At the end of the video address, they thanked the people for supporting their cause, adding that everyone should stand against injustice.

Olympians Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Vinesh Phogat along with other wrestlers had been on a protest in the national capital since the beginning of this year in order to press for the arrest of the Brij Bhushan over allegations of sexual harassment. (ANI)

Amit Shah in Cyclone Affected Zones

Amit Shah Visits Cyclone-Affected Zones in Gujarat

Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s scheduled press conference at 5 pm in Gujarat’s Bhuj on Saturday was pushed back to 7 pm.

Earlier, on Saturday, the Union Home Minister arrived in his home state to survey the trail of devastation left in the wake of Cyclone ‘Biparjoy’.
Shah met the people of Kathda village in Mandvi while also interacting with personnel of the National Disaster Response Force in Kachchh district.

Earlier, on Saturday, Shah visited Mandvi Civil Hospital and interacted with those affected by the extremely severe cyclonic storm.

Shah, along with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, conducted an aerial survey of areas badly hit by the cyclone.

Cyclone Biparjoy, which originated in the Arabian Sea and swept across the west coast of India, made landfall on Thursday night around 10 km north of the Jakhau Port in Kutch in Gujarat.

A total of six National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams evacuated 127 civilians from Rupen Bandar Government Primary School and reshifted to NDH School Dwarka after Cyclone Biparjoy made landfall in coastal areas of the state on Thursday evening.

According to NDRF, the evacuated civilians included 82 men, 27 women and 15 children.

With a prediction of heavy rainfall for the next two days for Gujarat after cyclone ‘Biparjoy’ made landfall in the state, Western Railways on Friday decided to cancel, partially cancel the operation of a few more trains as a precautionary measure in the cyclone-prone areas.

However, the cyclone weakened into a ‘deep depression’ and is further expected to weaken into a ‘depression’ in the next 12 hours, India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in the early hours today.

According to IMD, the cyclonic storm weakened into a ‘deep depression’ at 11:30 pm on Friday over Southeast Pakistan.

“Cyclonic Storm Biparjoy weakened into a Deep Depression at 2330 hours IST of yesterday, June 16, 2023, over Southeast Pakistan adjoining Southwest Rajasthan and Kutch about 100 km northeast of Dholavira. To weaken further into a Depression during next 12 hours,” IMD said in a tweet.

Earlier, it was reported that several trees were uprooted in Bhuj, Kutch, due to the impact of the cyclone. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team carried out the clearance work on Friday.

Strong winds and rain from cyclone ‘Biparjoy’ caused a power outage in Gujarat’s Jamnagar district. PGVCL (Paschim Gujarat Vij Company Limited) teams were in action mode on Friday to restore the issue.

Of the damaged property, 414 feeders, 221 electric poles, and one TC were made operational immediately. The power supply was restored in villages of Jamnagar district.

A transformer at Kalavad taluka of Jamnagar was made functional promptly after the cyclone passed.

NDRF Director General Atul Karwal on Friday said no loss of life was reported after Cyclone Biparjoy made landfall in Gujarat.

“Twenty-four animals have died and 23 people have been injured. Electricity supply has been interrupted in about a thousand villages. 800 trees have fallen. It is not raining heavily anywhere except Rajkot,” the NDRF DG Karwal said earlier. (ANI)

Rajnath Singh

Self-Reliance is Vital in Defence Due to Dual Threat: Rajnath

Self-reliance is not an option but a necessity, as India is facing a double threat on its borders, along with new dimensions of warfare that are emerging in today’s fast-changing world, said Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in Lucknow on Saturday.

Rajnath Singh was speaking at a defence dialogue on ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ organised by STRIVE think-tank, a veterans’ initiative in Lucknow.
He termed a strong and self-reliant military as the backbone of a sovereign nation, which besides protecting the borders, safeguards the country’s civilisation and culture. He asserted that the Government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is ensuring that the Armed Forces are not dependent on foreign weapons and equipment, emphasising that the real strength lies in being ‘Aatmanirbhar’, especially when an emergency situation arises.

He emphasized the paradigm shift brought about by technology in the nature of warfare. He focused on the need to develop indigenous state-of-the-art weapons and platforms that equip & prepare the Armed Forces to tackle new and emerging challenges.

“Most of the weapons today are electronic-based systems, which can reveal sensitive information to the adversaries. As imported equipment has certain limitations, we need to go beyond the horizon and achieve self-reliance in niche technologies. The latest weapons/equipment are equally important as the bravery of our soldiers. If India wishes to become a military power at the global level, there is no other option than being self-reliant in defence manufacturing,” Singh said.

He enumerated the steps taken by the Government to create a robust defence ecosystem, which not only caters to domestic requirements but also fulfils the security needs of friendly countries. These include setting up of Defence Industrial Corridors (DIC) in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu; earmarking of a record 75 per cent of the defence capital procurement budget (approx. Rs one lakh crore) for the domestic industry in Financial Year 2023-24; 25 per cent R&D budget for private industry and Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) initiative & Technology Development Fund to promote start-ups.

He informed that so far, a total investment of about Rs 2,500 crore has been made in UPDIC by various entities. The corridor will not only produce spare parts, but also manufacture and assemble Drones/Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Electronic warfare, Aircraft & BrahMos missiles.

The Raksha Mantri highlighted that the Government’s efforts in the last few years have resulted in over Rs one lakh crore in defence production and nearly Rs 16,000 crore in exports in Financial Year 2022-23.

He exuded confidence that the defence exports will soon cross Rs 20,000 crore mark. “We are moving ahead at an unprecedented pace to achieve the Prime Minister’s vision of making India a developed nation by 2047. The aim is to build an economically powerful and completely self-reliant India, which is also a net defence exporter,” he added.

Chief Nodal Officer for UP DIC Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria (Retd), officers of the Armed Forces & DRDO, and representatives of the industry and academia were present on the occasion. (ANI)

Manipur Situation

BJP Office Vandalised By Mob In Manipur’s Thongju

Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) office in Manipur’s Thongju was vandalised by a mob Friday night, officials said.

Union Minister Rajkumar Ranjan Singh on Friday expressed anguish at miscreants torching his residence in Imphal’s Kongba area on Thursday night and said the “law and order situation in Manipur has failed”.

Singh, who is Minister of State for External Affairs, said he had constructed his house with prayers and was unable to understand why it was targeted.

“Someone tries to vandalize it, demolish it, I feel shocked. I never expect such kind of attitude and activities from my fellow citizens of this state. I pray to God also not to happen again. This is the second time, the first time, I anyhow convinced them and the security protected…. that was in the early evening. This time yesterday it was late night, around 10:30. Everything was normal, suddenly crowds of people came and attacked, I was told,” Singh told ANI.

The minister, who is in Kerala, said when the house was on fire, the fire brigades could not enter the place as people created blockages.

“I do not know why they are attacking. There is no reason. In the whole process, I am trying to bring peace, negotiating…my senior ministers and colleagues to bring normalcy in the state. In the meanwhile, this kind of unwanted incident happened. If my sons and daughters and family happens to be here…that burning and throwing of petrol, it seems to attempt on my life also,” he said.

“Law and order condition in Manipur is a total failure. The existing government could not maintain peace that’s why the central government has sent a lot of protections and Rapid Action Force. I don’t know how the state machine is failing, I feel like that,” he added.

The minister had told ANI earlier that about 50 miscreants had attacked his house.

“It is extremely sad to see what happened last night. I was told that more than 50 miscreants attacked my home. Damage has been done to the ground floor and the first floor of my residence. Neither I nor anybody from my family was present during that time. Thankfully, nobody got injured.”

The minister said Union Home Minister Amit Shah had called him and he informed that he was out of the state.

Singh hails from the Meiti community and has been making efforts for the restoration of peace in Manipur which has witnessed ethnic violence.

“An eye for an eye will make the whole world go blind. Violence doesn’t help any cause. Those indulging in this violence are doing a huge disservice to the nation. It also reflects that they are enemies of humanity,” Singh told ANI.

Nine people were killed while more than 10 were injured in fresh violence in Manipur on Wednesday.

The state government has further extended the shutdown on the internet in the state up to June 20.

On Wednesday, miscreants tried to burn down the official residence of Manipur minister Nemcha Kipgen in Imphal West. His home was partly burnt.

Violence gripped Manipur on May 3 after clashes erupted during a rally organised by the All Tribals Students Union (ATSU) to protest the demand for the inclusion of Meiteis in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list. (ANI)

MP Su Venkatesan

Tami Nadu BJP Leader Suryah Arrested For Tweet Against CPM MP

BJP’s Tamil Nadu State secretary SG Suryah was arrested by the Madurai district cyber crime police on Friday in Chennai in connection with his recent tweet on Madurai MP Su Venkatesan, police said.

Condemning the incident, the State BJP president K Annamalai said on Twitter, “The arrest of @BJP4TamilNadu State Secretary Thiru @SuryahSG avl is highly condemnable. His only mistake was to expose the nasty double standards of the communists, allies of DMK.”

“Using state machinery to curtail free speech & getting jittery for the slightest criticism is unbecoming of a democratically elected leader and, indeed, are signs of an autocratic leader in the making. Drawing inspiration from autocrats, TN CM Thiru @mkstalin is turning the state into a lawless jungle. These arrests will not deter us & we will continue to be bearers of the uncomfortable truth!” Annamalai tweeted.

Earlier, in a scathing letter aimed at Communist Party of India (CPI) Councilor Viswanathan, the BJP State secretary Suryah said an incident in which a sanitation worker from Madurai, Pennadam Parishad, died on the job as he was forced to work in faecal water due to which he developed an allergic reaction in his body.

In his letter, Suryah lashed out at Viswanathan for his double standards, for forcing the deceased sanitation worker to resort to manual scavenging despite being aware that it is prohibited by law. The letter was attached to his tweet by Suryah on his Twitter handle

In the same tweet, Suryah attacked Madurai MP Venkatesan for his silence. “Your fake politics of separatism stinks worse than that cesspool, find a way to live as a human being, mate!” a rough translation of his tweet in Tamil read.

Suryah’s arrest comes after State minister Senthil Balaji was sent to the custody of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) till June 23, in connection with an alleged money laundering case by Chennai Metropolitan Session court on Friday. (ANI)
