Canadian Envoy Condemns Celebration Of Indira’s Assassination In Canada

Cameron MacKay, the High Commissioner for Canada in India, on Thursday, condemned an event that celebrated the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

MacKay said that he is “appalled” by reports of an event in Canada that celebrated the killing of Indira Gandhi.
Taking to his official Twitter handle, Cameron MacKay stated, “I am appalled by reports of an event in Canada that celebrated the assassination of late Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. There is no place in Canada for hate or for the glorification of violence. I categorically condemn these activities.”

Canadian envoy’s statement comes against an unverified video circulating on social media which showcases a tableau in Canada, showcasing the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. In the video, the statue of Indira Gandhi can be seen drenched in blood.

Indira Gandhi served as the first and only woman Prime Minister of India from January 1966 to March 1977 and again from January 1980 until her assassination in October 1984. She was shot dead by two of her own bodyguards at her official residence on October 31, 1984.

Earlier in March, the Ministry of External Affairs summoned the High Commissioner of Canada after the security breach at the Indian embassy in Ottawa. The statement by the MEA said the Government of India sought an explanation on how such elements were allowed, in the presence of police, to breach the security of India’s diplomatic missions and Consulates.

“The High Commissioner of Canada was summoned yesterday to convey our strong concern about the actions of separatist and extremist elements against our diplomatic Mission and Consulates in Canada this week,” the MEA said in a statement released in March.

The Canadian government is expected to take strong steps against such anti-India separatist elements, the Ministry of External Affairs said in the statement.

“The Government of Canada was reminded of its obligations under the Vienna Convention and was asked to arrest and prosecute the individuals who have already been identified as being involved in such acts,” the statement read further. (ANI)

Degree Of Trust Between India-US Unprecedented: Campbell

President Joe Biden’s top official for the Indo-Pacific region, Kurt Campbell said that the degree of trust and confidence developed between India and the US was not present a decade ago.

“I think what is also developed more and more between the United States and India is a degree of trust and confidence that, frankly, was not present a decade ago,” Kurt Campbell said.
Speaking on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the United States on June 22, he said that he hopes this visit “consecrates” the US.

He said that India’s relationship is the most important bilateral relationship for the United States on the global stage and that “we effectively make it into a sort of escape velocity.”

He said that in his own period of engaging with India, one of the most important things that has developed in this process is the degree of trust and confidence that was not present a decade ago.

Speaking on the possible outcomes of the visit, Kurt said, “There will be deliverables. There will be discussion about areas where we are united, and areas where we still continue to have concerns.”

He said that both India and the US are imperfect democracies. “We both have challenges,” he added.

“And I think our goal will be to seek to build on that. And that certainly seems to be a bipartisan consensus as far as I believe it is,” Kurt said while discussing the individual concerns of both nations.

He said that the world is recognising the critical role that India is playing on the global stage and it is not just strategic.

“Many business groups, and investment groups, are looking at India as part of a strategy to diversify globally with new supply chains, new investment opportunities, and the most impressive diaspora,” he said.

“I’ve engaged with Indian Americans in the US who are proud and pleased with going forward, I think the hope will be to open up venues and activities for more investment, for more people, to people,” he said in terms of opening more opportunities.

“Our universities need to train many more engineers and high-tech people,” he added.

He said that the general attitude of Indians is to volunteer and go for the opportunity when they see one.

“And so we want to open those opportunities up for greater people, to people across the board,” he added.

He said, “This (PM Modi’s visit) potentially could be one of the most important sorts of juncture points with the potential for the United States and India to assume its place, this relationship, is really the critical, dynamic relationship that I think we aspire.”

Kurt Campbell made these remarks on On June 6 in his discussion with Hudson Institute’s distinguished fellow Walter Russell Mead on the United States foreign policy and America’s role in the world. (ANI)

Peace Committee in Manipur

Manipur: Security Forces Recover 29 Automatic Weapons

Security forces seized automatic weapons and recovered warlike stores on Wednesday during a joint combing operation in sensitive areas both in the Hills and Valley sector of Manipur following violence in the state.

“29 weapons (mostly automatic), mortar, hand grenades, ammunition and warlike stores were recovered by security forces during joint combing operations in Manipur on June 7,” Spear Corps of the Indian Army said in a tweet.

Security forces deployed in the troubled state launched a joint operation on Wednesday to comb out weapons and ammunition hidden away by miscreants.

“Operations were conducted across Manipur in both Valley and Hill areas under the cover of UAV and Quadcopters,” it further said in another tweet.

Notably, during home minister Amit Shah’s recent visit to Manipur, he appealed to the public to hand over all weapons and ammunition to the administration for maintaining peace and order.

The appeal came with a warning about a ‘search-and-combing operation’ plan, which also mentioned that anyone found to possess weapons during the operation would be prosecuted.

Earlier in the day, advisor (Security) to the Manipur government Kuldeep Singh said that a total of 868 arms and 11,518 pieces of ammunition have been recovered to date from different areas in violence-hit Manipur.

He also said a total of 57 arms, 318 ammunition, and 5 bombs were also seized by the authorities in the last 24 hours.

The recoveries of arms and ammunition were made from Porompat Police Station in Imphal East and Sugnu police station in the Kakching districts of Manipur.

Singh said curfew has been relaxed for 12 hours in five valley districts and for 10 hours and 8 hours in neighbouring hill districts of Manipur.

“There is no curfew in six other hill districts. Movement of essential items along NH-37 is ensured. 244 empty vehicles have left Imphal for Jiribam today. A total of 212 loaded vehicles have left Noney and 212 loaded tankers and trucks left Jiribam today,” said Singh, who was appointed the security advisor to the Manipur government in the beginning of May in view of the spiralling violence in Manipur.

“The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) UG 2023 for entrance to MBBS/BDS Course was conducted yesterday (June 6, 2023) at 22 centres (12 in Imphal West and 10 in Imphal East),” former Central Reserve Police Force chief said, adding, the examination was conducted in a peaceful manner and the attendance was normal.”

He further mentioned that ministers and MLAs of the state are visiting different areas in Manipur and appealing for peace. (ANI)

Olympians Aren't Safe From Sexual Predators

‘When Olympians Aren’t Safe From Sexual Predators, Consider The Fate Of Poor Women’

Based in Village Surma in the core area of Dudhwa National Park near Lakhimpur Kheri in Uttar Pradesh and the Nepal border, Sahwaniya Rana says Brij Bhushans of the country must be sent behind bars

Absolutely wrong! What is happening to our great world champion women wrestlers is shameful and outrageous. These are the young women who have made the nation proud in the entire world. What is happening to them is extremely dangerous and diabolical and should be resisted by all women, and all citizens of India.

Where have they been able to bachao the betis of India? Instead, they are brazenly destroying the betis of India. That man (Brij Bhushan Saran Singh) should be arrested immediately, and he should be punished for his misdeeds while holding a position of power. This is simply not acceptable.

I am certain that all the women and girls of India fervently want that the Wrestling Federation chief should be arrested and punished. If he is not arrested, it is a direct attack on Indian womanhood and their dignity. It is an attack on the women’s fundamental rights enshrined in the Indian Constitution. If this ghastly state of affairs goes on, what will happen to us — to Dalits, Adivasis, Muslims and the poor?  They will then kidnap women from the streets, as in old times. They will get away with murder.

Indeed, do they want to get rid of the Brij Bhushans from our society, or, do they want to make many more ugly replicas of him? Do they want to make him a role model? This is sick. They are dragging the country 200 years back!

Anyway, there is little or no justice for women in this male-centric society and politics. We are often treated like garbage. We are oppressed, and exploited. Even the women leaders in the BJP are mum. Is it not heartbreaking that they are dragged on the streets, beaten up, arrested, and then fake charges are put against them — against these great achievers, who are the actual role models of our society for millions of girls and women? Is it not heartbreaking that they choose to immerse their proud Olympics and international medals into the Ganga, tears flowing from their eyes. Looking at them, tears flow from our eyes too, and anger swells up in our hearts!

All the Tharu adivasis and women are standing up in support of our women wrestlers. Our heart goes out to them. While we fight a difficult, peaceful and protracted battle to reclaim our ancient forests, and while are fighting for the implementation of the constitutionally guaranteed Forest Rights Act enacted by the Parliament, we should also join our sisters, our wrestlers, and fight this shameful, cruel and arrogant regime. This is a dangerous trend they are setting. All women in India should stand up and fight for the rights of Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat and all our women wrestlers.

(The narrator is a leader of the Tharu Adivasi Mahila Mazdoor Kisan Manch, leading the people of 46 villages in dense forests. She travels across the country in solidarity with other Adivasi and forest-dwellers, helping them in their struggles. She has participated at several international forums.)
