In a major development, India is planning to buy 26 Rafale fighter aircraft and three Scorpene class conventional submarines from France.
The proposals have been placed before the Defence Ministry by the defence forces and are likely to be announced during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to France this week, government sources told ANI. As per the proposals, the Indian Navy will get 22 single-seated Rafale Marine aircraft along with four trainer aircraft.
The Navy had been pressing for acquiring these fighter aircraft and submarines urgently as they have been facing shortages in view of the security challenges around the country.
The aircraft carriers INS Vikramaditya and Vikrant have been operating the MiG-29s and need the Rafales for operations on both carriers.
Meanwhile, the three Scorpene class submarines would be acquired under the repeat clause by the Navy as part of Project 75 where they would be built in the Mazagon Dockyards Limited in Mumbai.
The deals are estimated to be worth over Rs 90,000 crore but the final cost would be clear only after the contract negotiations are completed which will be held after the deal is announced.
India is likely to seek price concessions in the deal and would be insisting on having more ‘Make-in-India’ content in the plan, sources said.
Industry sources said for the Rafale M deal, India and France are expected to form a joint team to negotiate the deal like it was done for the previous Rafale deal for 36 fighter aircraft.
The proposals have been discussed in the defence ministry at high-level meetings already and are likely to be placed before the defence acquisition council in the next few days and expected to be accorded Acceptance of Necessity by the government before the announcement in France. (ANI)
The Yamuna River in Delhi, which was flowing above warning level for hours, crossed the danger mark of 205.33 metres at 5 pm on Monday, the latest data from the flood control department said.
According to the flood bulletin, the water level at the Old Railway Bridge increased 205.4 metres at 5 pm on Monday. The water level in Yamuna is rising continuously as Haryana released more water into the river from the Hathnikund barrage amid rains across northwest India including the national capital.
The Yamuna crossed the warning mark of 204.5 metres at 1 pm.
According to the Flood Control Department, around 2,15,677 cusecs water was discharged through the Hathnikund barrage at 3 pm.
Earlier in the day, Delhi Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj said that the government is in alert mode and that is fully prepared to control the situation.
“Delhi government is on full alert. As the water will go above 206 metres, we will start shifting people, living on the banks. The process of taking them safely to the relief camp will be started. Earlier we were feeling that the water level would cross 205 meters on June 11, but it has crossed 205 meters today itself because more water is being released from Haryana,” he told ANI.
Earlier in the day, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that there is no flood threat in Delhi due to the rise in the water level of Yamuna, following two days of heavy rain in the national capital and adjoining areas.
He also urged all political parties to refrain from blame games stating that it was not the time to “point fingers” at each other.
“A flood-like situation unlikely to arise in Delhi. Government is prepared to deal with any situation,” he said addressing a press conference here after a meeting to review the city’s handling of the heavy rainfall.
Kejriwal said, “It is not the time to point fingers and single out anybody.” He added that evacuation of people from low-lying areas around Yamuna will commence once the river breaches the 206-metre mark.
The IMD has issued an orange alert for today in the national capital.
Ahead of the review meeting today Delhi’s Public Works Department (PWD) minister Atishi inspected the Yamuna river’s water level.
The national capital recorded 153 mm of rainfall in 24 hours ending at 8:30 am on Sunday, the highest in a single day in July since 1982, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
Several parts of northwest India witnessed a heavy spell of rain with Delhi shattering a 41-year record on Sunday, IMD said.
There were reports of house collapses, uprooting of trees and waterlogging in several residential colonies in the national capital over the last two days.
Waterlogging issues were also observed in diplomatic enclaves such as Chanakyapuri, Kaka Nagar, Bharti Nagar, and other prominent roads and colonies under the jurisdiction of the NDMC.
Further, according to the IMD, an interaction between a western disturbance and monsoonal winds is leading to an intense rainfall spell over northwest India, including Delhi, which experienced the season’s first “very heavy” rainfall. (ANI)
A total of 38 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams are deployed in Punjab, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh as relentless rain continued to lash these states for the third straight day in a row, putting normal life out of gear.
As the rain across the northern parts of the country has killed over 20 people, as well as caused landslides and flash floods in the region, the NDRF’s 15 teams are deployed in Punjab, 12 in Uttarakhand and 11 in Himachal Pradesh. Some reserve teams of the NDRF are also ready to meet any challenge in an emergency situation in Delhi where the Yamuna river is flowing at 203.58 meters and is expected to reach 205.5 meters by tomorrow morning.
Speaking to ANI, NDRF DIG Mohsen Shahedi said that the reason behind heavy rains for the last three days is due to Western Disturbances.
“This situation often comes in monsoon. This caused heavy rains. Early warning and IMD (India Meteorological Department) prediction was given in advance regarding it,” Shahedi said.
Asked about the deployment of the NDRF, Shahedi said, a total of 15 teams are deployed in Punjab, 12 in Uttarakhand and 11 in Himachal Pradesh presently.
“Some more places may face problems as a few reservoirs will be opened tomorrow. NDRF will be deployed accordingly to deal with any challenge,” the DIG added.
As per the officer, some rescue operations have also been undertaken by the NDRF personnel in each of these three states– Punjab, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. “Rescue operations were conducted in almost each state, and it continued the whole night.”
“Relief materials have also been provided at many places. The relief materials have been provided to people stranded at some safe locations. These materials were provided to these people with the help of state administration and state agencies,” Shahedi told ANI.
The officer further said that the NDRF had received information from Central Water Commission (CWC) that the danger level of water in Delhi will touch by this noon. “If there is any emergency situation in Delhi, the NDRF teams in Delhi’s Dwarka and Ghaziabad are ready.
As per SSP Mandi, Soumya Sambasivan, there is a state of complete disaster in the Mandi district in Himachal Pradesh as many buildings, bridges and parking lots have been washed away.
Similar conditions are in Punjab and Uttarakhand as heavy rains triggered landslides and have left hundreds stranded as several roads — including National Highways– have been damaged due to landslides, adversely impacting vehicular movement in Himachal Pradesh.
As per IMD, it had given a warning for extremely heavy rainfall and issued red alerts in Himachal Pradesh. “Tomorrow onwards, rain is likely to decrease in Himachal Pradesh but in Uttarakhand, for the next 3 days, similar kind or a little lower intensity rain is likely to continue…Today, heavy rain expected in eastern Punjab, Haryana, West Uttar Pradesh and south Rajasthan…,” said the IMD. Kejriwal said, “It is not the time to point fingers and single out anybody.” He added that evacuation of people from low-lying areas around Yamuna will commence once the river breaches 206-metre mark.
Citing reports of the Central Water Commision (CWC), Kejriwal said, “Yamuna river flowing at 203.58 meters in Delhi. It is expected to reach 205.5 meters tomorrow morning. Also, according to weather predictions, the water level in Yamuna is not expected to rise too high. A flood-like situation is unlikely. If Yamuna crosses the 206-metre mark, then we will start evacuation along the banks of the river.”
Kejriwal also said potholes on Delhi roads will be filled with stones to prevent accidents, and that the New Delhi Municipal Corporation has been asked to resolve waterlogging problems faced by residents.
Further, he said that there will be inquiry into the incidents of roads caving in. He said that the state governments in the states in north India, which bore the brunt of the torrential rainfall were reaching out to affected people.
“All the political parties will have to coordinate and seek ways to provide relief to the people. Northern India was pounded with unpreceded rains over the last few days,” the Aam Admi Party National Convenor said.
He mentioned that Delhi received the highest rainfall in July since 1982.
“There are reports that people are facing a lot of problems in other adjoining areas as well. In such a situation, we all have to come forward and help each other”, Kejriwal said.
He said that the Delhi government has directed its officials to reach out to the people after heavy rains wreaked havoc in the city.

With gold and velvet flowing like the Ganga in mud, the coronation of the King of United Kingdom and Northern Ireland and of course Commonwealth looked like a festival of Bumble Bees with golden and black stripes. It was so carefully and minutely choreographed that one almost felt sorry for the Prince metamorphosed as King. The phrase gilded cage would not find a better caricature.
But then it transpired that the King himself had overlooked every little minutiae of the proceedings, every guest list and every arrangement on how many steps each person would take. The King of England did not want any mistakes lest people laugh at him and turn off. Not much of a sovereign when One is scared of being taken for the court jester. Not the same as the mighty Henry VIII who would have said ‘offff with his head’ if anyone dared to laugh at his funny clothes or a bit of a misstep.
Nor like the powerful Monarchs of Middle East who can cut hands, legs, heads and even more with swords. Or like the Presidents of come countries such as China and USA, who can wipe the whole world with one finger touch on a red button if they so much want. Still the ceremony, the cast and the wardrobe kept many glued to TV saying ‘aaahhh, oooh’.
British Monarchs are a neutered species. They reflect ‘Britain rules the Thames’ now with all the filth filtered into the once sacred river by the British privatised water companies. It is increasingly being exposed that the vast wealth and Jewellery in the possession of the Monarchy is dubiously stolen from other countries such as signing agreements and breaking them in characteristic British approach. Ask the EU who are still wondering whether any document signed by HRH Government is worth the paper.
To come back to the coronation, called regalia. It had all the props of a B Hollywood movie set for a Shakespearian film about a British Monarch. It was surrealist. It was difficult to take this as reality because it is so reflective of a bygone world. Was Television showing a film or a real life event? Perhaps the next Monarch can do a stone age version with Mammoth tusks and Skin coats.
But people thronged to watch and those whose lands had been pillaged, looted and handed to others, fell over themselves to have a glimpse. Some even put on rings and gloves etc on the King, perhaps thanking his family for all the hard work in their ancient lands. It is bizarre.
The comedy got even more competitive with Saturday night shows. The King of England is ‘divine’. Yes believe it or not. After God, comes the King of England. The Pope was usurped in England by good old Henry VIII. Not that His Divineness, HRH has been able to do much for people sleeping rough on the streets of London, or 20% children in Britain going hungry every day, except shoo them out of statistics.
There was some oil brought all the way from Jerusalem to put on his nipples and some other appendages to affirm his ‘divinity’. This is out of those Marvel fantasy films, where the hero is anointed with some holy icon to protect the world from the evil designs of the devil’s warlords.
Being God’s emissary or assistant, His ‘divineness’ has decided to become ‘defender of all faiths’, whether they like it or not. ‘We are looking for the same’ says HRH Divineness. Charles the nth. Well in that case his first job as defender of faiths should be to wear that Glove given by a Sikh and rush over to France and divinely make the King of France, Macron, permit Sikh children to wear turbans in schools. It will be a befitting use of the glove. At least in Marvel films, heroes with divine powers can do much more.
Not everyone was enamoured by the coronation. Scotland football fans of the Celtics, spent a whole afternoon in the match singing, ‘you can shove your coronation up you ….’ (Lokmarg has some standards).
As with all these pompous ceremonies, His Divineness’ has had to go to Scotland to be enthroned as well to lay claim to all his lands. Only to be met by a number of Scottish with placards, ‘Not my King’. Other Scottish couldn’t be bothered to turn out.
Nevertheless the Bumble Bee circus will go on and is considering making its way to India as first stop in the colonies. Strong man Modiji will only be more than gelatinous to hug His Divineness’ and thank his family for reducing India’s once might GDP at 25% of world’s wealth (during Mughals) and reducing it almost zero on 1947. Modiji does not like Mughals and English stripped the Mughals of their wealth. So great souls.
Alas the rest of us will continue to watch the Bumble Bee show carry on reminding many of us that every shiny stone in that crown has come through the spilt blood of our kin somewhere in history.
However having said all that, it has to be admitted a bit begrudgingly by Republicans like me that the ceremony, the pomp, the fairy tale royalty and organisation was unbeatable. No one else can do it better.
Modi Ji All Weather Man
In this gender neutral world, Modiji will hug anyone who is white and powerful and get away with it without taking sides. Within a week, our Modiji had hugged Joe Biden of the United States and Vladmir Putin of Russia without any embarrassment.
Russia and United States are growling at each other like Rottweilers, fighting in Ukraine. But only Modiji can be relaxed and smiley with both. It is diplomacy and statesmanship or something else.
And neither Biden nor Putin can take a step back from these huggies. They both seem to adore Modi ji. Modiji’s smiles are too irresistible.
Now hugging Xi is another matter. As the mighty Chinese keeps on gnawing at India’s real estate, and is too dour to be seduced by smiles and hugs, Xi is unlikely to come ten steps near Modi lest he is grasped and hugged. Unless of course Modi and Jaishankar finally hand all of India to China and tell Indians that it is the deal of the millennia. In which case Xi will give him the hug of the century with a smile that will beat all.
HINDU MADRASAS IN BANGLADESH
Not to be outdone by all those Islamic Madrasas in South Asia, the Sangh has come up with its own plan. Why not beat them at their own game and set up Hindu Madrasas in Muslim countries.
So the Sanghis have now established some 350 Vedic Schools in Bangladesh to instil pride in being Hindus and tell Hindu children why they should worship cows in a country in which people eat Beef in almost every meal. The Sanghis are also demanding 50 seats reservation in Bangladesh Parliament.
Apparently the RSS is behind all this. Hope fully similar Hindu Madrasas will be established in Pakistan and Afghanistan soon.
As former India captain Sunil Gavaskar turned 74 today, actor Jackie Shroff shared a special wish for his “real hero” on social media.
Jackie took to Instagram and shared an old picture featuring himself and Gavaskar. https://www.instagram.com/p/CugYwyqIRAu/embed
Sharing the picture, he wrote, “Happy birthday to my real hero @gavaskarsunilofficial.”
Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar, also known by the nicknames ‘Sunny’ and ‘Little Master’, is doublessly among the greatest Indian cricketers to have graced the gentleman’s game.
The diminutive opener, who burst into the cricketing spotlight in his debut Test series overseas against the mighty West Indies, fronting up to the fiery Caribbean quicks, broke numerous batting records while setting new ones over the course of a spectacular career.
Several of his historic and heroic innings in cricket’s logest and, arguably, the toughest format, came between 1971 and 1987. Through his many memeorable knocks, which came on some of the least hospitable surfaces, got him among the pantheon of legends.
Having learned his first lessons with the willow in the dustbowls of Mumbai, the city he was born, Sunny was as much at home playing on some of the bounciest strips in the Caribbean as he was on rank turners of the Indian sub-continent.
A distinguished member of India’s maiden World Cup winning squad of 1983, Gahaskar once held the record for scoring the most centuries in Tests. The Mumbaikar, who scored more than 10,000 runs in red-ball cricket, brought curtains to his career with 45 half-centuries and 34 centuries against his name.
While his exploits with the willow is the stuff of legends, he was shrewd fielder and a leader too.
Not counting wicketkeepers, he was the first Indian fielder to have achieved a milestone of a century of catches in Test cricket.
For the record, he took an incredible 108 catches in his Test career.
Coming back to Jackie Shroff’s work front, he will be seen in ‘Jailer’ starring Rajnikanth in the lead role, this movie also includes stars like Ramya Krishnan, Priyanka Arul Mohan and Shiva Rajkumar and Tamannaah Bhatia. The ‘Lingaa’ actor has teamed up with filmmaker Nelson Dilipkumar for this project.
He will be next seen in ‘Baap’ alongside Sunny Deol, Sanjay Dutt, Jackie Shroff and Mithun Chakraborty. (ANI)
Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-F (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman expressed displeasure over recent meetings held in Dubai between the top leadership of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Dawn reported on Monday.
Speaking to reporters, Rehman also the chief of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) — the ruling coalition — said questions were being raised within the alliance regarding the “scheduled” meeting between the two major government allies. “PML-N is a part of PDM. How is it possible if it was not a scheduled huddle,” he wondered, asking, “Why the PDM was not taken into confidence regarding the huddle with the PPP, which was not part of the alliance?”
Questioning the “international support” for PTI chief Imran Khan, The JUI-F chief stated, “Those who desecrate our religion [Islam], those who burn [copies of the] Holy Quran are raising voices for Imran Khan. We put up a serious fight against him [Imran Khan] and we [also] fought against the recognition of Israel”.
Maulana Fazl also said that the tenure of the National Assembly would end within a month and an interim set-up would be appointed ahead of polls. The term of the National Assembly, along with the provincial assemblies of Sindh and Balochistan, is set to expire on August 12 and elections are required to be held in October this year.
In an apparent reference to the PTI’s supporters, Fazl hoped that they “would not push the country towards destruction”, Dawn reported.
Talking about the no-confidence motion last year, that led to the ouster of former PM Imran Khan, the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) chief said that his party was “against the no-trust vote as it favoured street protests to compel the then-PTI government to step down”, Dawn reported.
“However, the PPP, PML-N and other opposition parties said the no-confidence resolution against Imran Khan was ready to be tabled,” he added.
Maulana Fazl also claimed that former spy chief, retired Lieutenant General Faiz Hameed, in a meeting with him, offered him the membership and chairmanship of the Senate, but he refused the offer since the former general “wanted a change within the system”, Dawn reported.
On being asked about the trial of civilians in military courts, Fazl said the military itself was a complainant in that case.
“The military is a complainant in the cases against those involved in attacks on installations on May 9, 10 and it wants a trial of suspects in their [military] courts,” Dawn quoted Fazl as saying.
While talking about attacks against the JUI-F leadership in Bajaur and other tribal districts, the party chief said 18 religious scholars were targeted in attacks over the past 18 months in Bajaur and some five active members, including public representatives, were targeted in North Waziristan.
“Why Al Qaeda and Daesh [the militant Islamic State group] could not be eliminated,” he questioned. The JUI-F said that security issues were the domain of the military and the army discussed such issues only with the prime minister. (ANI)
A 450-year-old building collapsed in the Kharyouk area of Leh city in the union territory of Ladakh due to incessant rainfall in the region on Sunday evening.
“This building is about 450 years old. The building has collapsed mainly due to the heavy rainfall in the region,” Haider, a local told ANI.
He further said that a few old houses have also been damaged in the area due to heavy rains.
Leh recorded 14.5 mm of rainfall during the last 9 hours on Sunday, as per IMD.
“This time it rained a bit longer resulting in damage to the old buildings. Water started to leak into rooms,” Haider said.
He said that there was a cloud burst in 2010, “But the damage was not so much. However, this time a lot of damage has been done to the old buildings”.
Metrological Centre Ladakh on Sunday said that the widespread rainfall and snow are likely to continue over higher reaches of the region.
“IMD issued Red color Warning for Ladakh for nxt 24 hrs. Snowfall in Summer Peak.. Widespread Rain/Snow (over higher reaches) likely to continue for nxt 24 hrs in Ladakh. Stay Alert,” it tweeted on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Jammu and Srinagar National Highway remained closed on Monday after a portion of a road collapsed in Ramban district due to heavy rainfall in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
Mohammed Jahangir, a local on his way to the area, said roads were being washed away in the downpour in the region and there are no adequate arrangements made by the administration for the visitors.
“We are facing a lot of problems. We have to walk a lot. Recently a road was washed away. We had to walk around 1-2 kms in Makarkot and now we have walked another 3-4 kms. As we reached Ramban, another road was washed away. There is no arrangement for the public. The administration should stop people from coming to Ramban stretch or else make necessary arrangements for them to proceed further,” he told ANI. (ANI)
