AAP Alleges Targeted Efforts To Arrest Oppo Leaders

After Aam Aadmi Party convenor and Delhi Chief Minister refused to comply with the summons from the Enforcement Directorate, Delhi Minister Saurabh Bhardwaj raised concerns over targeted actions against opposition leaders by central agencies while exempting BJP leaders.

In a press conference in Delhi today, Bhardwaj cited the one-year detention of Delhi CM’s former deputy Manish Sisodia and claimed a lack of evidence against him in the case.

“Manish Sisodia has been under arrest for 1 year. They have not been able to gather any evidence against Manish Sisodia and now preparations are on to arrest Arvind Kejriwal. Efforts are being made continuously to arrest the opposition leaders of the country,” the AAP leader said.

“We are not being informed in what capacity they are calling Arvind Kejriwal, he is neither a witness nor an accused,” the Minister added.

Bharadwaj pointed out the lack of action against BJP leaders despite many cases in place. He also cited examples of leaders who faced legal action and were allegedly exempted from the same after they joined the BJP.

“Many cases come up against BJP leaders but no action is being taken against them,” Minister Bhardwaj said.

“BJP was running a campaign against everyone from Suvendhu Adhikari to Mukul Roy, Pema Khandu, Ajit Pawar, Himanta Biswa Sarma, and then they joined BJP,” he added.

The Delhi CM earlier in the day evaded the Enforcement Directorate summons to appear for questioning in connection with the alleged Delhi liquor scam case.

BJP criticised the CM alleging a “hidden motive”. BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said, “Today, once again Arvind Kejriwal has skipped the third summon. This shows that there is something to hide, and that is why he is absconding like a criminal.”

Congress slammed the central agency and accused it of targeting opposition leaders and “not doing their work”.

Congress leader Udit Raj said, “Arvind Kejriwal is also a part of the opposition alliance. Indeed, these agencies are not doing their work but putting pressure on the opposition leaders.”

ED issued a third summons to CM Kejriwal earlier on December 22 last year, in connection with the excise policy case, asking him to appear before the agency on January 3.

As per the party sources, Kejriwal in his reply to ED has expressed his readiness to cooperate with the investigation but declined to appear today calling the notice “illegal”.

Kejriwal further questioned the timing of the notice as a move to stop him from electioneering ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections, the party sources said.

Kejriwal was not named as an accused in the first information report (FIR) filed by the CBI on August 17, last year.

In February 2023, Deputy CM Manish Sisodia was arrested by the CBI for alleged irregularities in the framing and implementation of the now-scrapped Delhi’s new excise policy. The policy was withdrawn amid allegations of foul play by the opposition. (ANI)

Mahua Moitra

Will Not Get Back Down, Says Mahua’s Advocate

After alleging that former Trinamool MP Mahua Moitra was conducting surveillance against him, Advocate Jai Anant Dehadrai, says that he has filed his complaint with the CBI and will not back down.

Advocate Jai Anant Dehadrai was also the complainant in the alleged ‘Cash for Query’ case which led to the suspension of Mahua Moitra from Parliaments.

Speaking to ANI on Wednesday, Advocate Jai Anant Dehadrai said, “I have given my complaint to CBI. This is a very serious issue and there are people from Odisha who are financing and supporting those against whom I have filed a complaint (to CBI). This fight is a bit dangerous but I will not back down. “

Earlier, Advocate Jai Anant Dehadrai on Tuesday alleged that TMC leader Mahua Moitra is carrying out “illegal surveillance on him with her contacts in West Bengal police”.

In a letter written to CBI Director Praveen Sood and Union Home Minister Amit Shah dated December 29, Advocate Dehadrai said that there might be a possibility that the TMC leader is “tracking” his physical location by using his phone number.

Dehadrai in his letter, also alleged, “Moitra has a demonstrated history of misusing her clout and connections with certain Senior Officers of Bengal Police to obtain the Call Detail Records (CDR) of private individuals to satisfy her desire to stalk the precise whereabouts of certain individuals as also the details of the individuals they are in touch with.”

Advocate Dehadrai also stated in his complaint that earlier, the TMC leader was actively “tracking a person named Suhaan Mukerji in 2019”.

“Moitra informed me orally on multiple occasions in the past as also in writing (on WhatsApp on 26.09.2019) that she had been actively tracking her ex-boyfriend, one Suhaan Mukerji as she suspected him of being in a relationship with a German lady,” the letter read.

Jai Anant Dehadrai further alleged that Moitra, with the assistance of “Senior Bengal Police Officers”, had the entire call records and history of Mukerji’s phone in which she had precise information about the individuals who had been “in contact with Mukerji as also the precise physical location of Mukerji’s phone for all hours of the day”.

The Advocate also stated that Mahua Moitra has made several threats to him in the past and also said that on several occasions he felt that his car was being followed outside his residence in Delhi.

Responding to the allegations made in the complaint, Mahua Moitra in her post on X, urged the Home Ministry to appoint a Special Director in the CBI for complaints by ‘jilted exes’ all over India.

“Urging MHA to set up a special Director CBI to probe all complaints by loser jilted exes pan India. Gratified to see Shahenshah of all Peeping Toms cc’d on the complaint. – he honed his surveillance skills covering up for his Sahib in Gujarat and can supervise CBI,” she said in a post on X.

Moitra, facing cash for query allegations, was expelled from the Lok Sabha after the Parliament adopted the report of its Ethics Committee, which was probing the matter. Moitra said that the Ethics Committee, without getting to the root of the investigation, decided to hang her. (ANI)

Kejriwal To Skip ED Summons Again, Calls Notice Illegal

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will not appear before the Enforcement Directorate for questioning in connection with the alleged Delhi liquor scam case, the Aam Aadmi Party sources said on Wednesday.

Kejriwal further questioned the timing of the notice as a move to stop him from electioneering ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections in 2024, the party sources said.

According to sources Kejriwal is ready to cooperate in ED investigation but the ED notice is illegal. Sources claim that the agency intends to arrest Arvind Kejriwal as they want to stop Kejriwal from the election campaign. The AAP has questioned the timing of the notice just before the 2024 elections.

The Delhi CM was first called by the central agency to appear on November 2, but he did not depose, alleging that the notice was “vague, motivated and unsustainable in law.”

He further alleged that the said summons appeared to be politically motivated and issued for extraneous considerations.

Kejriwal was issued the second summons by the ED on December 18, asking him to depose at the federal agency’s office on December 21, which the Chief Minister skipped.

AAP Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh was also arrested in the same scam in October 2023. (ANI)

Balochistan Balaach Bakhsh

Balochistan Govt Suspends 44 For Participating Protest Sit-In Against Killing Of Balaach Bakhsh

Amid the ongoing Baloch protest in Islamabad, the Balochistan government has suspended 44 government employees in Turbat and Kohlu, including some officers, for allegedly participating in and facilitating a protest sit-in and rally against the alleged killing of Balaach Mola Bakhsh, Pakistan-based Dawn reported.

The commissioner of Makran Division has issued an official notification confirming the action against 30 government employees from various departments in Turbat. According to the officials, the decision was taken during a recent meeting of the district intelligence coordination committee.

During the meeting, these officers were identified as providing support to to the participants of the anti-government sit-in and protest rally, according to Dawn report.

According to the notification, based on the recommendations of the meeting, the commissioner has suspended 30 employees from grade 1 to 15 and disciplinary action has been initiated against officials of grade 16 and above through letters to the secretaries of concerned departments.

In addition, 14 government employees in the Kohlu district were suspended for participating in the sit-in and supporting the long march participants when it reached Kohlu in December, Dawn reported.

According to the notification, the action against these government employees were taken under the Balochistan Employees Efficiency and Discipline (BEEDA) Act, 2011, Dawn reported. Most of the employees against whom disciplinary action has been initiated belong to the education department, serving as teachers in various schools.

Notably, the long march started in Turbat after the extra judicial killing of Balaach Baloch with other three in a fake encounter of Counter Terrorism Department (CTD). The authorities handed over the bodies to the families. However, Balaach’s family did not accept the body and took the body to Shaheed Fida Chowk for protests, The Friday Times reported.

Balaach’s family requested that the city police to accept their FIR. However, the police refused to register the FIR. Then, the protestors increased and they took the protest to different areas of Turbat to let the residents join the protest, The Friday Times reported. However, this protest changed into a long march demanding end to Baloch genocide. Under Baloch Yakjahti Committee – Kech, the protestors announced a long march against the Baloch genocide.

On December 31, Baloch activist Fazila Baloch has said that it is “heartbreaking” to see the sister of Balaach Baloch getting emotional as she remembers her brother, who fell victim to a “staged encounter” by the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) in Turbat.

She shared a video that showed Balaach Baloch’s sister crying as she remembered her brother. In the video, the woman cried, said “You killed my Balaach” and asked “What was my Balaach’s crime.” The video showed Baloch activist Mahrang Baloch hugging and consoling Baloch’s sister as she cried inconsolably for her brother.

While sharing the video on X, Fazila Baloch stated, “Heartbreaking .. “I just saw him, he was in the crowd.” Overwhelmed with grief, sister of Balaach Baloch, who fell victim to a staged encounter by the CTD in Turbat, Balochistan couldn’t hold back her tears.”

Meanwhile, Mahrang Baloch, the face of the Baloch movement, vowed to continue the ongoing protest and said that they are ready to make all kinds of sacrifices for the cause.

In a social media post on X, Mahrang Baloch said, “If this state thinks that we will be afraid of Islamabad Police’s threatening tone, torture and arrest and end our protest, then this is a childish thinking of the state. We have shouldered the mutilated bodies of our loved ones in Balochistan, we have buried the bodies of ten of our youth together, we have spent our childhood in deep pain and sorrow waiting for our loved ones, we have lost our mothers.”

She added, “We have seen the suffering that is unspeakable, we have seen the miserable lives of orphans And you are trying to scare us here with torture and arrests, to scare those who are afraid of losing something with torture and arrests. We have lost everything, everything we loved was what you took from us now we have nothing to lose. We will continue this struggle until the complete end of Baloch genocide and are ready to make all kinds of sacrifices for it.”

Moreover, the protesters also shared that the state administration is prohibiting food, tents, sound systems and other facilities in the cold weather at the protesting site. (ANI)

Adani Group Hindenburg

Truth Has Prevailed, Says Adani After SC Ruling On Adani-Hindenburg Row

Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani on Wednesday welcomed the ruling of the Supreme Court declining to transfer the probe into the Adani-Hindenburg matter from market regulator SEBI to a SIT (Special Investigation Team) or the CBI.

Adani tweeted saying that the judgement shows that truth has prevailed and said he was grateful to those who stood by the Adani Group.

“Satyameva Jayate. I am grateful to those who stood by us,” he posted on X.

“Our humble contribution to India’s growth story will continue,” the X post added.

In a relief to the Adani group of companies, a bench of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, PS Pardiwala and Manoj Misra said the scope of power of the apex court to enter into the regulatory domain of SEBI is limited.

It said the scope of judicial review is only to see whether any fundamental right has been violated.

The verdict of the top court came on a batch of petitions seeking a court-monitored investigation or CBI probe into the allegations made by US-based firm Hindenburg Research against the Adani group of companies regarding violations of the stock market.

The bench said there has been no regulatory failure by SEBI and the market regulator cannot be expected to carry on its functions based on press reports though such reports can act as inputs for SEBI.

The top court also asked SEBI to complete within three months its probe into two cases pending out of 24 cases.

The case is related to the allegations (part of a report by short-seller Hindenberg Research) that Adani had inflated its share prices. After the publication of these allegations a sharp fall in the share value of various Adani companies, reportedly to the tune of USD 100 billion was seen.

The Adani Group has dismissed the charges as lies, saying it complies with all laws and disclosure requirements.

Various petitions were filed alleging that changes to the Securities and Exchange Board of India Act (SEBI Act) had provided a shield and an excuse for the Adani Group’s regulatory contraventions and market manipulations to remain undetected.

The apex court then asked SEBI to independently probe the matter and also constituted an expert committee headed by retired Supreme Court judge Justice AM Sapre to look into the matter.

In May last year, the expert committee, in its report, found no prima facie lapse on the part of the SEBI in the matter.

While reserving the verdict, the Supreme Court said it has no reason to “discredit” SEBI, which probed allegations against the Adani group, as there was no material before it to doubt what the market regulator has done, and the court does not have to treat what was set out in the Hindenburg report as a “true state of affairs.”.

It had been observed that it cannot ask a statutory regulator to take as a “gospel truth” something that was published in the media.

Advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing for one of the petitioners, had told the apex court that there were many factual revelations in the Hindenburg report.

He said it was for the top court to see whether the investigation done by the SEBI was credible or not and whether some other independent organisation or an SIT needed to be formed to investigate it. (ANI)

Rahul Gandhi Hit-And-Run Law

Shahenshah Has Enacted A Law Against Drivers: Rahul Over Hit-And-Run Law

Calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi a ‘Shahenshah’ (Emperor), Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday lashed out at the Centre and said that the recently passed Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) bill contains a provision that will affect the drivers of the nation and can have fatal consequences.

Under the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), which replaced the Indian Penal Code, drivers who cause a serious road accident by negligent driving and run away without informing the police or any official from the administration can face punishment of up to 10 years or a fine of Rs 7 lakh.

Earlier, the punishment in such cases was two years in the IPC.

In a post on X, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said,” The insistence on making laws without discussion with the affected class and without dialogue with the opposition is a continuous attack on the soul of democracy. While more than 150 MPs were suspended, Shahenshah in Parliament enacted a law against drivers, the backbone of the Indian economy, which could have fatal consequences.”

Rahul Gandhi further stated that the government has forgotten the difference between an order of an emperor and justice.

“Throwing hard-working class with limited earnings into the harsh legal furnace can badly affect their lives. Also, misuse of this law can lead to ‘recovery mechanisms’ along with organized corruption. The government which runs democracy with the whip has forgotten the difference between ’emperor’s directive’ and ‘justice’,” Rahul Gandhi said.

Several transporters and auto-driver associations across India are protesting against the new law on hit-and-run incidents.

Private transport operators claim the law discourages drivers and may lead to unjust punishments. They claim that the drivers could be subject to mob violence when they attempt to transport the injured to hospitals and demand the repeal of the law.

On the protest by transport associations, and drivers against the new law on hit-and-run cases, All India Motor and Goods Transport Association President, Rajendra Kapoor said, “Our only demand from the govt is that the decision should have been taken after having consultations with our stakeholders. There was no discussion with anyone on this, and no one was asked about this. There should have been prior meetings and consultations.”

Earlier, private bus and truck drivers on Monday enforced a ‘chakka jam’ (traffic jam) across the state of Madhya Pradesh in protest against a new hit-and-run law.

A similar protest also broke out in the Chhattisgarh capital, Raipur, where bus drivers staged a demonstration against the new central law. (ANI)
