Shah Chairs High-Level Security Review Meeting On J-K

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday chaired a high-level security review meeting on Jammu and Kashmir.

In the meeting, the Home Minister is to review the functioning of the security grid and various aspects related to security.

The Home Minister is learnt to be reviewing security in Jammu and Kashmir in view of recent attacks in the Union Territory.

In the meeting, Shah also focused on complete area domination and better coordination among Police, Army and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) deployed in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Home Minister also stressed the need to boost and strengthen local intelligence in the Union Territory.

It is learnt that the Home Minister would review the area domination plan, zero-terror plan, law and order situation, cases related to UAPA and other security-related issues.

Jammu and Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo, National Investigation Agency DG Dinkar Gupta, Director Generals of Central Reserve Police Force and the Border Security Force attended the meeting, among other concerned officers of the Ministry of Home Affairs and Jammu and Kashmir.

National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla, Director Intelligence Bureau Tapan Deka and Army Chief General Manoj Pande were also present in the meeting.

The meeting was held days after four soldiers were killed and three injured following an encounter started after terrorists fired at two army vehicles passing through Dera Ki Gali in Rajouri’s Poonch region at around 3.45 pm on December 21 last year.

In November last year, five soldiers including two Captains were also killed in action after the Army and its special forces launched an anti-terror operation in Rajouri’s Kalakote.

In April and May 2023, 10 soldiers were killed in action in twin attacks in the Rajouri-Poonch region. This region had been largely free of terrorism between 2003 and 2021, after which frequent encounters started happening. Over 35 soldiers have been killed in action during anti-terror operations in the area during 2021 and 2022.

Pir Panjal, which also comprises Rajouri district besides Poonch and parts of Reasi districts, has witnessed a spike in militancy in recent years with several Army soldiers losing their lives after being ambushed by militants in the region, said sources in the security wing.

The Home Minister had chaired a similar high-level review meeting on the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir on January 13 last year and said that all security agencies are fighting a decisive battle against terrorism following the policy of zero tolerance against terrorism under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He had also said that a 360-degree security mechanism would be further strengthened to completely eliminate the support and information systems of terrorists.

The Minister had also held a review meeting on the security situation of the Union Territory in the national capital on April 13 last year wherein he reviewed the functioning of the security grid and various aspects related to security and reiterated that under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, the government of India is committed towards zero tolerance against terrorism.(ANI)

Japan Airlines Aircraft Catches Fire At Haneda Airport

In a shocking incident at Haneda Airport, Japan Airlines Flight 516, en route from New Chitose Airport, erupted into flames just after landing on Runway C at approximately 5:47 pm (local time) on Tuesday, Japanese public broadcaster NHK reported.

The unfolding situation suggests a potential collision with a Japan Coast Guard aircraft, it reported.

Japan Airlines has reported that there were 367 passengers on board, including eight children, along with a crew of 12. All 379 passengers and crew members were evacuated from the aircraft safely.

The incident has prompted a massive emergency response, with at least 70 fire trucks and other vehicles dispatched by the Tokyo Fire Department to extinguish the flames, as reported by NHK.

The aircraft involved in the collision with the Japan Airlines flight is reported to be an MA722 fixed-wing aircraft belonging to Haneda Air Base. Out of the six people on board the fixed-wing plane, one person has reportedly escaped, but the safety of the remaining five remains unknown.

Video footage from cameras installed at Haneda Airport by Japan Airlines and NHK captured the horrifying moment when flames erupted from the aircraft shortly after it touched down. The incident occurred during what should have been a routine landing, as the flight was scheduled to depart from New Chitose Airport at 4 pm and land at Haneda Airport at 5:40 pm.

The government promptly set up an information liaison room at the Crisis Management Centre of the Prime Minister’s Office at 6:05 pm on Tuesday to collect and coordinate information regarding the incident. In response to the emergency, all runways at Haneda Airport were closed around 6 pm, causing significant disruptions to air traffic.

Officials from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism have indicated that there is information suggesting a collision between the Japan Airlines Airbus A350 from New Chitose Airport and the Japan Coast Guard aircraft near the runway. The cause of the collision is yet to be officially determined.

The disaster prevention centre at the Japan Airlines Building at Haneda Airport reported that the fire is localised on Runway C. Despite efforts to control the situation, the severity of the incident raises concerns about the safety protocols in place at one of Japan’s busiest airports, NHK reported. (ANI)

BJP's Delhi chief Virendra Sachdeva Arvind Kejriwal

Law Will Decide If He Can Run Govt From Jail: Sachdeva Hits Out At Kejriwal

The BJP’s Delhi chief Virendra Sachdeva on Tuesday lashed out at Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal over his statement that he was ready to discharge his duties even from jail.

The chief minister and the AAP national convenor has been summoned a second time by the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) in connection with the Delhi excise policy case.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Sachdeva took a swipe at the Delhi CM, saying, “The signature campaign (aimed at enlisting public support amid the ED summons in the liquor policy case) that Arvind Kejriwal is talking about has already proved to be a flop and a non-starter in Delhi. This is why he had to hastily announce that the AAP would conduct a ‘Jan Samwad’ (public outreach) from January 4. They have also started a new trend — to run the government from jail.”

On the fresh ED summons to the Delhi CM, the Delhi BJP chief said, “All necessary action is and will be taken in accordance with the law.”

“Kejriwal must face the investigating agencies. He has been running away from questioning. All the action is and will be taken by the law of the land. The law, and, only the law, will decide if he can run the government from jail,” the BJP’s Delhi chief added.

In a further swipe at the Delhi CM over his alleged role in the liquor policy case, Sachdeva said, “By labelling the liquor scam as alleged, he has raised question marks over the ruling of the honourable court that is looking into the case. Everyone is aware of the gravity of the sections under which AAP leaders have been arrested in connection with the case. The court has refused to entertain their bail please and they continue to remain in jail even a year after being arrested.”

“The leaders whom Kejriwal is making out to be heroes — Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh — were arrested in a hawala case connected to the liquor scam. Sisodia appropriated black money through the Delhi liquor scam. Sanjay Singh reduced the age bar for alcohol consumption and allowed liquor shops to stay open till 3 at night. Is he a hero?” the BJP’s Delhi chief questioned.

“They can be heroes for Arvind Kejriwal because he received commissions from the liquor scam through them. He received kickbacks for corrupt deals. However, such leaders can’t be heroes for the people of Delhi,” Sachdeva added. (ANI)

Stalin Urges TN Floods To Be Tagged As National Disaster

Saying that he was deeply pained and moved by the plight of the flood-hit people of Tamil Nadu, in the aftermath of the devastating tropical cyclone ‘Michaung’, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday assured that the Centre stands with them at this difficult time and would extend every possible support to the state government to help bring them back on track.

Addressing a public event in Tiruchirappalli on Tuesday, PM Modi said, “2023 may be behind us now but the last few weeks of the year gone by were especially difficult for the people of Tamil Nadu. Heavy rainfall and flooding in the aftermath of cyclone ‘Michaung’ claimed many lives. There was also a significant loss of property. I was deeply moved seeing the desperate straits that the people were in because of the unrelenting rainfall and flooding after the storm. However, I am here to assure each and every one of you that our government (at the Centre) stands with you at this difficult time. We are providing every possible support to the state government and are willing to do more,” PM Modi said.

Significantly, during his address at the event, Chief Minister MK Stalin urged PM Modi to declare the Tamil Nadu floods as a national calamity and commit more central funds for the relief and rehabilitation of the marooned and affected residents.

“The floods in Chennai and our southern districts have not only destroyed public infrastructure but have also thrown countless lives haywire. I would request the central government to declare the floods as a national disaster,” CM Stalin said from the podium.

Remembering the late actor and DMDK president Vijayakanth, PM Modi said he would place national interest above everything else.

“Just a few days ago, we lost Thiru Vijayakanth. He was a Captain (nickname), not only in the world of cinema but also in politics. He won the hearts of the people through his work in films. As a politician, he always put the national interest above everything else. I bow in tribute to him,” PM Modi said.

Also paying glowing tributes to the late celebrated agricultural scientist and the man behind India’s ‘green revolution’, Dr MS Swaminathan, PM Modi said the former was instrumental in ensuring food security for the country.

“We lost him last year as well,” PM Modi noted.

The state government and the Centre have jointly mobilised a massive rescue and relief operation to help the flood-affected people of the state.

Earlier, PM Modi assured full central support to Tamil Nadu and deputed Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to take stock of the situation.

In a post on X, Chief Minister MK Stalin also expressed gratitude for Prime Minister Modi’s prompt response to the distressed, flood-hit locals.

“Prime Minister @narendramodi called me to inquire about the unprecedented floods in Southern Tamil Nadu, immediately after #CycloneMichaung,” CM Stalin stated in a post earlier.

The CM said he also apprised Prime Minister Modi of the urgent need for financial support from the Union government to address the mounting challenges faced by the state.

“I have explained to him the massive rescue and relief efforts undertaken by the state government, despite resource constraints, and sought immediate financial support from the Union government,” he added in his post.

In response to the CM’s plea, PM Modi assured full support to help the state overcome the twin calamities. (ANI)

China’s Crackdown On Foreign Firms Put Them In Dilemma

Following China’s crackdown on foreign firms, multinational corporations in the country are facing a dilemma this year as the risks of doing business in China increase, as reported by the Voice of America (VOA).

Beijing’s increased scrutiny of Western firms over the past year has alarmed international investors at a time of growing tensions between the US and China.

Leading to this, “de-risking” became the byword for wary enterprises.

Anna Ashton, Director of the China Corporate Affairs Programme at the Eurasia Group, a global political risk consulting firm, told VOA that national security concerns tied to the changing geopolitical tensions with the US have caused China to change some business rules, which has made the environment less certain for foreign companies.

“National security concerns tied to the changing geopolitical landscape and tensions with the United States have prompted Beijing to change some of the rules for doing business in ways that make the environment a lot less certain for foreign companies,” she said.

“That, plus the slower-than-expected return to normal growth after the end of the zero-COVID policies. So, this and geopolitical tensions with the US–a sort of sluggish Chinese economy… have been key drivers in terms of making the business environment difficult for foreign companies,” she added.

China’s economic weakness may also be putting foreign businesspeople on alert, according to VOA.

On December 14, the World Bank said in its semiannual regional forecast that it now expects China’s growth rate of 5.2 per cent this year to slow to 4.5 per cent in 2024, down from the 4.8 per cent it expected in April and 4.3 per cent in 2025.

“The outlook is subject to considerable downside risks,” the report said.

Moreover, China’s newly revised Counter-Espionage Law went into effect on July 1.

The US National Counterintelligence and Security Centre issued a warning to US companies before the law was enacted, saying that the new law’s vague definition of espionage gave the Chinese government more access to and control over corporate data. What companies consider normal business activities, such as market research, could become criminal activities, VOA reported.

Elisabeth Braw, a columnist at Foreign Policy and a senior associate fellow at the European Leadership Network, while highlighting the law vagueness, said that for Western businesses, China is becoming an increasingly difficult environment and unpredictability is the problem.

“Any Western company can be targeted by various government crackdowns related to the espionage legislation,” she said. “Also, whenever the Chinese government wants to retaliate against the Western government, there is a risk that it will use a Western company operating in China as a proxy target. That’s very easy, because what can the company do? It can do nothing.”

In an article while writing on foreign policy, Braw said that China’s difficult business environment is reflected in the fact that political risk underwriters have virtually stopped writing new policies for companies operating in China, as reported by VOA.

Companies further signalled how they felt about the changing environment with their plans to move.

In May, Forrester Research, a technology consulting company, decided to close its China office.

Moreover, in June, the Gerson Lehrman Group, which had planned to expand its operations in China in 2023, began layoffs, according to VOA.

Later in November 2023, US asset management giant Vanguard Group and management consulting polling firm Gallup announced they would be shutting down their operations and withdrawing from China.

Even companies highly dependent on China’s manufacturing sector, such as Apple, which launched its Chinese manufacturing operations in 2001, are transferring parts of their production lines to countries such as India and Vietnam.

China’s State Administration of Foreign Exchange released data in early November, stating that foreign direct investments were negative USD 11.8 billion in the third quarter, the first negative figure since recordkeeping began in 1998. (ANI)

After holding a convocation event at the Bharathidasan University, PM Modi was felicitated by Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin at the public programme in the city.

Speaking at the event, Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia spoke highly of PM Modi’s leadership, saying the central government, on his watch, has ensured that airports are not only a medium of travel but also centres of growth.

“Airports are also emerging as centres of employment for the whole country. The one big change that has taken place over the last 9.5 years of this government is that PM Modi, through his leadership, has democratised civil aviation for every single citizen of this country. Everyone who wears a ‘Hawai Chappal’ (slippers) must also travel in a ‘Hawai jahaaj’ (aircraft). This has been the PM’s dream for the people of our country,” Scindia said.

PM Modi later proceeded to inaugurate the new terminal building at the Trichy airport.

The new terminal building has been developed at a cost of more than Rs 1100 crore. The two-level new international terminal has the capacity to serve more than 44 lakh passengers annually and about 3,500 during peak hours, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) informed earlier through an official release.

“The new terminal hosts state-of-the-art amenities and features for passenger convenience,” read the PMO statement on Monday.

Tiruchirappalli International Airport is the second-largest airport in terms of international passenger traffic after Chennai in Tamil Nadu.

The road projects will facilitate safe and faster travel of people of the region and improve the connectivity of industrial and commercial centres like Trichy, Srirangam, Chidambaram, Rameshwaram, Dhanushkodi, Uthirakosamangai, Devipattinam, Erwadi, and Madurai, among others, according to a government release.

Prime Minister Modi also laid the foundation stone for important road development projects.

These include the construction of a 31-kilometer-long, four-lane road from Mugaiyur to Marakkanam of NH 332A.

The road will connect ports on the East Coast of Tamil Nadu, enhance road connectivity to the world heritage site — Mamallapuram — and provide better connectivity to Kalpakkam Atomic Power Plant.

He also inaugurated the General Cargo Berth-II (Automobile Export/Import Terminal-II and Capital Dredging Phase-V) of Kamarajar Port. The inauguration of General Cargo Berth II will be a step towards strengthening the country’s trade, which will help boost economic growth and employment generation.

Further, the projects whose foundation stone was laid include the development of 323 Km of natural gas pipeline from Krishnagiri to Coimbatore section of Kochi-Koottanad-Bangalore-Mangalore Gas Pipeline II (KKBMPL II) by Gas Authority of India Ltd (GAIL); and the laying of POL pipelines in the Common Corridor for the proposed grass root terminal at Vallur, Chennai.

These projects in the petroleum and natural gas sectors will be a step towards fulfilling the industrial, domestic and commercial requirements of energy in the region. These will also lead to employment generation in the region and contribute to employment generation.

He also inaugurated the 500-bed Boys’ Hostel ‘AMETHYST’ of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Tiruchirappalli.

Apart from Tamil Nadu, Prime Minister Modi will also visit Lakshadweep and Kerala over two days, on January 2 and 3. (ANI)

Couldn’t Get Everything Agreed By Everybody: Jaishankar On Biden Not Attending R-Day

With US President Joe Biden not able to make it to India in late January due to “scheduling demands”, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has said that the visit was tied to the proposed Quad Summit and indicated that the dates did not work with all partners.

In an interview with ANI, Jaishankar said that could not get “a landing zone” there and couldn’t get “everything agreed by everybody”.

“You know I think that was a different issue. because you know it was tied to Quad also and we couldn’t get a landing zone there…we couldn’t get everything agreed with everybody. So, therefore it didn’t work,” Jaishankar said.

He was asked if Biden could have come for the Republic Day parade and there could have been “Namaste Biden” event on the lines of the huge “Namaste Trump” event held in Ahmedabad to welcome the then US President Donald Trump during his visit to India in 2020.

Sources had said earlier that Quad (Quadrilateral Security Dialogue) Summit, which was slated to be hosted by India in January, is now proposed to be held later in 2024. They had said that revised dates were under consideration as the current ones do not work with all the QUAD partners.

US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti had said in September that Biden was invited to India for Republic Day celebrations. He said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended invitation to Biden on the sidelines of the G20 Summit held in Delhi in September.

French President Emmanuel Macron, will be visiting India as the Chief Guest for the January 26 Republic Day celebrations at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Macron thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the invitation.

India and the US held the fifth India-US 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue in November. India and the United States have a comprehensive global strategic partnership covering almost all areas of human endeavour, driven by shared democratic values, convergence of interests on a range of issues, and vibrant people-to-people contacts.

During Biden’s visit to Delhi for the G20 Summit, India and the US also settled the seventh and last outstanding World Trade Organisation (WTO) dispute. Notably, the six previous disputes were resolved during PM Modi’s state visit to the US.

The two leaders reaffirmed the close reaffirming the close and enduring partnership between India and the United States, according to the India-US joint statement. The two leaders expressed their “appreciation for the substantial progress underway to implement the groundbreaking achievements of Prime Minister Modi’s historic, June 2023, visit to Washington.”

The two leaders commended the progress in implementing the futuristic and wide-ranging outcomes of PM Modi’s State visit to the US in June 2023, including under the India-US Initiative for Critical and Emerging Technology (iCET).

PM Modi made a significant visit to the United States in June last year, engaging in high-level talks with President Biden. The discussions centred on bolstering the Indo-US strategic partnership, with an emphasis on trade, defence collaboration, and technology transfer. They announced several key initiatives, including joint efforts in renewable energy and climate change mitigation. (ANI)

Delhi: Cold Wave Chills Capital To The Bone

There was no respite for the national capital from bone-chilling cold, as the city woke up to another icy morning on Tuesday, with the minimum temperature in the Ridge area of the national capital dropping below the freezing point, at -0.3°C.

There were no signs of the prevailing cold wave slackening its hold on the national capital and vast swathes of North India, as Delhi’s Safdarjung observatory recorded a minimum temperature of 1.4°C. The Palam observatory recorded the mercury at 1.2°C while Ayanagar logged 1.0°C at 8.30 am.

With the mercury taking a downward shift, locals were pictured sitting around bonfires as the biting cold chilled them to the bone.

Meanwhile, in keeping with the weather pattern of the last few days, dense fog shrouded the national capital and elsewhere in its neighbourhood on Tuesday, with the visibility reduced significantly in isolated pockets of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed.

“Fog conditions observed (at 0830 hours IST of today): Very dense fog in isolated pockets of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh; and Dense fog in isolated pockets of Punjab; and moderate fog in isolated pockets of Haryana, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim,” read a post on the IMD’s official handle on X.

“Visibility Recorded (at 0830 hours IST of today) (<=200 metres): Uttar Pradesh: Bareilly-0, Lucknow and Prayagraj-50, Gorakhpur and Varanasi-25 each, Jhansi-200; Uttarakhand: Pantnagar-25, Nainital-50, Dehradun-200; Rajasthan: Bikaner-25, Jaipur and Udaipur Dabok-50 each,” the IMD stated in its post.

“Madhya Pradesh: Bhopal-25, Ratlam-200; Punjab: Ludhiana-50; Haryana: Ambala-200; Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim: Siliguri-100, Jalpaiguri and Cooch Behar-200,” the weather forecasting agency informed further.

According to the IMD, the fog is deemed ‘very dense’ when the visibility is between 0 and 50 metres while it is ‘dense’ when the visibility is between 51 and 200 metres.

Further, the fog is considered ‘moderate’ when the visibility is between 201 and 500 metres and ‘shallow’ when between 501 and 1,000 metres.

Meanwhile, at least 26 trains arrived late due to fog in the national capital on Tuesday morning, the Indian Railways informed.

The IMD did not hold out any hope of respite from the prevailing weather in the coming days, saying that cold wave conditions would persist and even extend to some parts of central India between January 5 and 11.

Speaking to ANI on Tuesday, Dr Mrityunjay Mohapatra, the director general of IMD, said, “Between January 5 and 11, we expect night temperatures to fall further, with the cold wave persisting in North India and even extending to some parts of central India. The day temperatures would, however, hover in the normal range for this time of the year. Conditions akin to cold days would be experienced in the central and western parts of the country, especially Madhya Pradesh, northern Maharashtra and southern parts of Uttar Pradesh.”

Meanwhile, homeless people and those on the streets were pictured cooped up at night shelters as the cold intensified in the national capital on Monday night.

Speaking to ANI, the caretaker of a shelter home at Dandi Park, Yamuna Bazar, said, “There are five shelter homes here. They were closed in the wake of the flooding from the Yamuna on July 12 and a case pertaining to these shelters is currently in the Supreme Court. All necessary arrangements here have been made for homeless people and there is provision for food as well. I have been working here for the last 8 to 9 years since these shelters became operational.”

A tea seller at Anand Vihar Bus Terminus said there was minimal footfall of passengers and customers owing to the bitter cold and thick fog outside. (ANI)
