BJP is India’s Most Powerful Political Magnet

Under Modi, BJP is Now India’s Most Powerful Political Magnet

It’s a phenomenon that has become so common that it is almost a part of the official protocol. When an incumbent administration has to announce a budget barely months before it seeks reelection, that budget invariably becomes a crowd pleasing one – full of sops, tax rebates, and other carrots that are proffered as enticement to voters. Last week, however, when the finance minister announced India’s interim budget, it was not especially laden with those customary come hither propositions. That’s because Prime Minister Narendra and his regime that is completing its second term and will be seeking a third at the elections, scheduled for April and May this year, expect that they will be a shoo-in for the voters.

In fact, to many it could seem that for Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the elections will be a one-horse race. At the national level, opposition to the ruling regime is in shambles; the multi-party Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), which was formed last July, has all but disintegrated; and the BJP’s strength and prominence has grown without any signs of abatement.

The BJP has become so dominant that Modi’s government didn’t have to throw in sops or lollipops for voters in last week’s budget. Yes, it had the routine nods and doffs of the hat aimed at the poorest sections of the population: it has focussed on the rural sector and agriculture by boosting several schemes. Yet, it has also cut food subsidies, a delicate area, and not lowered income tax rates. In fact, it will lean on higher tax collections for the coming financial year.

In an election year, an interim budget lets an incumbent government spend until the new administration takes over. If the ruling regime is reelected it can seek approval for a full budget.

That eventuality looks like a certainty. Few doubt that the Modi regime can be ousted in the coming elections. For one, there seems to be no alternative to challenge it. Potential challengers have mainly self-destructed or become weakened. Some former challengers have crossed over to join the BJP or ally with it. Most recently, Nitish Kumar, Bihar’s longest lasting chief minister (last week he was sworn in for a record ninth time) jumped ship to join the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which is led by the BJP. Ironically, Kumar was the main architect of the opposition alliance, I.N.D.I.A., formed with the sole purpose of ousting the Modi regime. Amen!

Kumar isn’t the only renegade in contemporary Indian politics to clamber aboard the BJP’s bandwagon. Politicians of all stripes from various opposition parties have jumped onto it. It may serve us well to remember that the word “bandwagon” was coined by Phineas T. Barnum, also known as P T Barnum, a famous 19th century American circus owner and showman. He created the term to describe the wagons that transported a circus band. The circus metaphor does fit Indian politics rather well.

Among those who have joined the BJP have been many of its erstwhile critics and sworn opponents. But then politics, at least in India, is marked by promiscuity. Some Congressmen who ditched their party to join the BJP have also been rewarded (or was it a quid pro quo?) by ministerial portfolios in Modi’s Cabinet. The current civil aviation minister, Jyotiraditya Scindia, 53, was in the Congress party for nearly 20 years before joining the BJP in 2020; and the minister for micro, small and medium enterprises, Narayan Rane, 71, also left the Congress to join the BJP in 2019. Rane is not a shy party-hopper. Before joining the Congress he was with the Shiv Sena.

There are many other political leaders, who were originally opposed to the BJP, but now members of that party. Jitin Prasad, 50, a longtime member of the Congress party who has also served as minister in the Congress regime, is now part of the BJP and a minister in the Uttar Pradesh government led by BJP’s Yogi Adityanath. In 2017, the veteran Congress leader from Karnataka, S.M. Krishna, once a foreign minister, joined the BJP. Other prominent politicians who have joined the BJP include the Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, 55, who left the Congress in 2014; Mukul Roy, 69, who left the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal to join the BJP in 2017. In some states such as Uttar Pradesh, there have been televised events organised where opposition politicians have formally joined the BJP ceremoniously.

What makes the BJP a political lodestone in India? A simple answer to that is power. Politics, purists would say, is a pursuit of a calling rather than a career. In a democracy such as in India, the copybook definition of a politician’s ambition would be the urge to serve the people. However, in reality it is the power that politics can bestow on an individual and burnish his importance and status that drives many politicians.

The BJP won the elections and formed the government at the Centre in 2014 and has during the past 10 years decimated opposition at the national level. It is without doubt the most powerful political party in the country and one that offers the most potential for ambitious political leaders. In contrast, the Congress, once referred to as India’s Grand Old Party, is a weak shadow of itself. It has repeatedly lost elections at the Centre as well as in the states: in Parliament, the Congress now has 47 of the 543 seats. In 1984, when Rajiv Gandhi became Prime Minister, it had 414. His son, Rahul, now the party’s most prominent member, is witnessing the Congress’ steady and devastating decline. Of the 28 Indian states, the BJP rules 12 and is part of the ruling alliance in four more. The Congress is part of the ruling alliance in only five states.

The steady decline of the Congress’ importance and sway in Indian politics is one of the chief reasons why ambitious politicians from that party have been disillusioned and have decided to ditch it and join the Modi bandwagon. It is for the same reason that veteran politicians of regional parties such Nitish Kumar and his Janata Dal (United) have chosen to ally with Modi and bury earlier differences with him.

The BJP on its part has welcomed the influx of such renegades. First, many of the new entrants are leaders with considerable influence in their constituencies and can obviously beef up the BJP’s electoral might further. Second, their departure can also serve to weaken their former parties, which is good for the BJP. Some of the younger joinees have good track record as ministers–for instance Scindia or Prasad – and, therefore, can strengthen the BJP’s administrative firepower. They can also help win elections.

Meanwhile, the BJP has been quietly, and a bit invisibly, deepening and strengthening itself. It has become a significant force in Indian politics, and its appeal is multifaceted. While the party has been associated with Hindu nationalism and has been accused of being anti-minorities, it has also been successful in projecting an image of good governance and welfare schemes that appeal to a broad section of the electorate.

The BJP’s leadership, particularly Prime Minister Modi, is seen as strong and decisive, and the party has been successful in expanding its base and electoral presence. Last December, Modi retained his position as the world’s most popular leader with an approval rating of 76 per cent, as per the data released by US-based consultancy firm ‘Morning Consult’.

Additionally, the BJP’s well-oiled and lethal electoral campaign machine, which leaves nothing to chance, has been a significant factor in its success. The reasons for politicians leaving other parties to join the BJP may include disillusionment with their former party’s internal dynamics, leadership, and electoral prospects, but it is also the appeal of the BJP’s ideology, governance, and electoral success that has drawn them to it. Therefore, the BJP’s appeal is not limited to its association with Hindu nationalism, and it has been successful in projecting an image of good governance and welfare schemes that appeal to a broad section of the electorate.

Some observers feel that the BJP lacks a lineup of successors beyond Modi, 73, and home minister Amit Shah, 59, the two most prominent faces in the government. This may not be true.  The party has a history of grooming and promoting leaders from within its ranks and is far less dynastic than many other India political parties such as the Congress or even regional parties where the route to leadership is often limited to those with family ties and connections.

Although some BJP leaders have been “sidelined”, including Shivraj Chouhan who was chief minister of Madhya Pradesh, Sushil Modi, who was deputy chief minister of Bihar, Vasundhara Raje, who was chief minister of Rajasthan for two terms, and Raman Singh, who served as chief minister of Chhattisgarh for 15 years, the BJP does have future leaders that it has been grooming.

Some of the younger leaders who have begun making a mark in the BJP and could be watched in the future include Himanta Biswa Sarma, who has emerged as the party’s point person in the north-east; Manoj Tiwari, 53, who the the Delhi BJP leader and whose influence has been growing; Tejasvi Surya, 33, an MP from Bangalore, known for his articulate speeches and strong conservative views; Poonam Mahajan, 43, another MP who is seen as a rising star in the party; and Sarbananda Sonowal, 61, an MP from Assam and currently a minister in the Modi cabinet.

These are just a few names of leaders to watch from the BJP. It will be worth the while to watch how these younger breen of party leaders are groomed and given more responsibility in the coming years. Also worth watching is how many more leaders from other parties make a beeline to what has become India’s most powerful political magnet.

C’garh Dy CM Visits Naxal-Affected Silger

Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Of Chhattisgarh, Vijay Sharma visited the Naxal-affected Silger village on the Sukma-Bijapur border in Sukma district on Saturday.

The Deputy CM’s visit comes days after a recent Naxal attack near Silger village that claimed the lives of three individuals and left 14 others injured on January 30.

Upon his arrival, Sharma engaged with soldiers and local villagers in Bastar’s Silger which is known to be the worst Naxal-affected area in the state, inquiring about their well-being and gaining insights into the prevailing situation.

He took the opportunity to apprise the villagers of various government schemes aimed at fostering development and improving living standards in the region.

“Silger is a village in far South Bastar, and it is evident that the entire village harbours aspirations for development. Our camp here symbolizes progress, and we have initiated schemes to facilitate growth,” stated the Deputy CM.

He emphasized the government’s commitment to providing essential facilities such as electricity, roads, drinking water, ration distribution, and healthcare services to the villagers.

“The government will provide all kinds of facilities in the village. Every person in the village, every youth wants progress and development. People think that electricity should come into the village, roads should be built in the village, drinking water should be provided, ration should be provided, health facilities should be provided, everyone wants this and no one is standing in the way of this. Any obstacle that comes will not be tolerated,” he said.

Expressing admiration for the soldiers’ bravery in the face of adversity, Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma highlighted the transformation occurring in Bastar, where development camps are being established in previously inaccessible areas.

“I have talked to everyone, the youth also want progress and development, for how long will this continue, a decision will have to be taken,” the Dy CM told ANI.

“Some time ago there was a Naxal attack here, also met our soldiers, met the villagers, let’s see how. There is amazing courage among the soldiers, where it was never possible to come, now development camps are being set up. Bastar is changing,” Sharma remarked.

ACS Niharika Barik echoed the sentiments of the villagers, affirming their eagerness to collaborate with the government in driving progress.

“There is a lot of enthusiasm among the people. They want to progress in their village with the help of the government. The villagers have told the people what are their needs. We will fulfil them gradually by making a plan as soon as possible. We are soon making a plan so that we can do all the programs after saturating all the nearby villages,” the ACS said while speaking to ANI.

She underscored the importance of addressing the villagers’ needs promptly and efficiently, outlining plans to fulfil demands for housing, banking facilities, and the construction of a pond in the village.

“People’s bank accounts have not been opened, hence we are not able to provide them with the facility of the housing scheme. The villagers will provide them with houses as soon as possible. We will try to open a bank account here as soon as possible. There is also a demand for a pond here. We will make that here soon,” Niharika Barik said. (ANI)

ED Moves Court Against Delhi CM For Non-Attendance In Compliance Of Sec 50, PMLA, 2002

ED Moves Court Against Delhi CM For Non-Attendance In Compliance Of Sec 50, PMLA, 2002

The Enforcement Directorate on Saturday moved to Rouse Avenue Court and filed a complaint against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for not complying with the summons issued by the agency in the Delhi liquor policy money laundering case.

The Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Divya Malhotra, after hearing the submissions on Saturday, fixed February 7 for the remaining submissions and consideration of the fresh complaint filed by the agency.

ED on Saturday filed a fresh complaint case under Section 190 (1)(a) Cr.P.C. r/w. Section 200 Cr.P.C., 1973 r/w. Section 174 IPC, 1860 r/w. Section 63 (4) of PMLA, 2002 for non-attendance in compliance with Section 50, PMLA, 2002.

On February 2, 2024, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal skipped the Enforcement Directorate’s summons for the fifth time in connection with the money laundering probe related to irregularities in the Delhi excise policy 2021-22 case. The fresh summons to the Delhi CM followed the fourth summons, which he had skipped on January 18.

While skipping the fifth summons, the party called it “unlawful.”

Kejriwal has so far skipped four previous summons issued by the ED on January 18, January 3, November 2, and December 22, calling them “illegal and politically motivated.”

According to the ED, the agency wants to record Kejriwal’s statement in the case on issues like the formulation of policy, meetings held before it was finalized, and allegations of bribery.

In its sixth charge sheet filed in the case on December 2, 2023, naming AAP leader Sanjay Singh and his aide Sarvesh Mishra, the ED has claimed that the AAP used kickbacks worth Rs 45 crore generated via the policy as part of its assembly elections campaign in Goa in 2022. The excise policy was aimed at revitalizing the city’s flagging liquor business and replacing a sales-volume-based regime with a licence fee for traders. It promised swankier stores and a better buying experience. The policy introduced discounts and offers on the purchase of liquor for the first time in Delhi.

Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena’s move to order a probe into alleged irregularities in the regime prompted the scrapping of the policy. The AAP has accused Saxena’s predecessor, Anil Baijal, of sabotaging the move with a few last-minute changes that resulted in lower-than-expected revenues.

Two senior AAP leaders–Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh–are already under judicial custody in the case. Sisodia, who was the then Delhi Deputy Chief Minister, was arrested by the CBI on February 26 following several rounds of questioning, and on October 5, the ED arrested Singh, who is a Rajya Sabha member. Nana Patole Attacks M'rashtra Govt Over Ulhasnagar Firing Incident

Nana Patole Attacks M’rashtra Govt Over Ulhasnagar Firing Incident

In a sharp attack on the Maharashtra government led by the Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alliance over the Ulhasnagar firing incident, state Congress Chief Nana Patole said that the incident marks the beginning of ‘Jungle Raj’ in the state.

BJP MLA Ganpat Gaikwad allegedly opened fire at Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde) faction leader Mahesh Gaikwad at Hill Line Police Station in Ulhasnagar on Friday night, triggering sharp reactions from the opposition leaders of the state.

“There is no rule of law in Maharashtra. The law and order have utterly collapsed in the state. Consistent firing by the MLAs of the ruling party marks the beginning of ‘Jungle Raj'”, Patole said while speaking to ANI.

Hitting out at state Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, the Congress leader said, “The Chief Minister is continuously pressurizing the state police, not letting them work. If there is an iota of ethics left in CM Shinde, he should immediately resign.”

Nana Patole further highlighted that the Congress party strongly condemns the incident.

“The Congress party strongly condemns the incident. It will be worth seeing what action is taken against Ganpat Gaikwad by the ruling Shiv Sena-BJP government. Daring to open fire on the police station premises shows how the power has completely taken over the BJP. What kind of Ram Rajya is this? Even the senior IPS officers are terrified,” Patole said.

“Earlier, Sada Sarvankar, an MLA from the ruling party, opened a fire during Ganeshotsava. But no action was taken against him. Rather, he later came to be appointed as the Chief of the Siddhivinayak Trust. Sunil Kamble, a BJP MLA assaulted a policeman, and escaped legal action. The MLA from the ruling party says that the police can do nothing wrong to them, because their ‘boss’ is sitting in the ‘Sagar Bungalow’,” he added.

Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis resides at Sagar Bungalow in Mumbai.

Former minister and Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray lashed out at the BJP-led Maharashtra government while questioning the law and order situation in the state.

In a post on X, Thackeray reiterated his earlier ‘khoke sarkar’ (a government shrouded in corruption) remarks against Eknath Shinde’s dispensation in the state.

Thackeray outlined a series of incidents highlighting the deteriorating security situation under what he termed as the “BJP-sponsored khoke sarkar” (a government shrouded in corruption).

“Maharashtra was taken over by the BJP-sponsored Khoke Sarkar,” Thackeray said in his post.

He further alleged that the past two years witnessed a surge in riots sparked by fake WhatsApp messages, coupled with threats targeting businesses by criminal elements pointing it to be the current state of affairs in the state.

“In the past 2 years, many riots have been sparked off over fake WhatsApp messages. Goons have been threatening businesses,” the Shiv Sena (UBT) leader said.

Thackeray questioned the safety of the citizens in the face of these alarming incidents.

“This is the current state of affairs in Maharashtra, unfortunately, under a highly incapable and shameless illegal CM,” Thackeray said.

“How will citizens feel safe under these criminals running the regime?,” he added.

Earlier in the day, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut called for Chief Minister Ekhnath Shinde’s resignation following the firing incident.

The Shiv Sena (UBT) leader also claimed that the BJP MLA who fired at the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) MLA said that gangsters will continue to thrive in the state if Chief Minister Eknath Shinde stays in power.

Hitting out at the Eknath Shinde government, Raut also said that the way the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) has become a den of goons, similar incidents can also take place at the CMO.

“Today, it happened at a Police station. The manner in which the CMO has become a den of goons, I fear that such incidents can take place even at the Mantralaya and CMO,” Raut said.

NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) National Spokesperson Clyde Crasto also criticised the state government claiming a failure of law and order.

Meanwhile, CM Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadanavis have ordered a high-level inquiry into the police station firing incident. A Crime Branch Special Investigation Team (SIT) has also been formed to investigate the incident.

Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde also visited Jupiter Hospital in Thane to meet his party leader Mahesh Gaikwad who was shot by BJP MLA Ganpat Gaikwad yesterday in Ulhasnagar.

Mahesh Gaikwad and Rahul Patil who were critically injured at the firing incident, were been admitted to the Jupiter Hospital in Thane for treatment.

“Going by what has been found here, there was no question of (firing in) self-defence. The injured were sitting and watching the CCTV screen. There was no argument or provocation. But he (Ganpat Gaikwad) aimed and shot them,” Thane Additional CP Datta Shinde said.

“A total of ten rounds were fired in the Ulhasnagar incident. Six bullets were taken out of Mahesh Gaikwad’s body by the doctors,” the Additional CP said. (ANI)

Saira Sends Birthday Wishes To Rehman

Saira Sends Birthday Wishes To Rehman

On veteran actor Waheeda Rehman’s birthday, fellow yesteryear actress Saira Banu on Saturday shared her special wishes for the screen legend while admiring her “simplicity in personal life”.

Taking to her Instagram handle, Saira shared a throwback picture along with Rehman and legendary actor and husband Dilip Kumar.

She wrote in her post, “Happy Birthday Waheeda Aapa”!

Saira posted that she had known Waheeda since long, as her mother and the latter stayed in the same building.

“I have known her for long as my mother Naseem Banuji and Waheeda Aapa resided in the very same building at Nepean Sea Road. The first time I saw Waheeda Aapa was at a function in an Auditorium where we were invited and the Chief Guest was Dilip Sahib, whom I was dying to see at any given opportunity,” she said.

She recalled an entertaining event from an auditorium function in which Banu was introduced by the great actor Dilip Kumar.

“My mother and I sat with all the prime guests, Waheeda Rehmanji, the poetess cum filmstar Tabassum, the maestro Shankerji of the Shanker-Jaikishan musical team. The compere at the mike started to invite the celebrities onto the stage, of course starting with Sahib. When he called out all the names I was sitting with my mother who was busy signing autographs. Meanwhile the compere called out the famous celebrities but when my turn arrived, he fumbled and it was like thousands of hours of embarrassment to me, I was drained in nervous perspiration that this man was fumbling to find my name! How embarrassing for me,” she added.

“That very instant, Sahib took the mike from the Compere and said “Saira Banu, daughter of Naseemji, Please come on to the stage”! Imagine my nervousness after this little faux pas by the Compere when I was already struggling to look composed in the newness and discomfort of a Sari. Waheeda Aapa gave me a warm smile as I came on stage. We both seemed very reserved, I with my London upbringing and she always accompanied by her sister. During our school holidays in Bombay from London, we’d often find ourselves in the same lift, where Sayeeda Aapa would exchange pleasantries,” she added.

Recalling the moment when she received glowing praise from the fellow yesteryear screen diva for her beauty, Banu posted, “Shortly, my grandmother, Sultan Bhai, and I returned permanently to Bombay and as luck would have it within a month’s time “JUNGLEE” came about and there was no looking back for me. One day, Waheeda Aapa dropped in to convey to my mother that Guru Duttji wanted to meet us regarding a film. When “JUNGLEE” released, Waheeda Aapa walked over to me and declared “You really are a Beauty Queen”. I was flattered that she said this to me. I always admired her simplicity in personal life, she hardly wore any make up and seemed very down to earth with no airs and graces. There is a lot to tell when relations go way back in time, I will talk about that time and era at length tomorrow”.

Waheeda Rehman made her acting debut with the Telugu film ‘Rojulu Marayi’ in 1955′.

However, she gained popularity with Guru Dutt’s films including ‘Pyaasa’, ‘Kaagaz Ke Phool’, ‘Chaudhvin Ka Chand’, and ‘Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam’.

She is also known for her outstanding performances in cult hits such as ‘Guide’, ‘Neel Kamal’, ‘Ram Aur Shyam’, ‘Reshma Aur Shera’, among others.

In 2023, she was conferred with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Lifetime Achievement Award for her stellar contribution to Indian cinema. (ANI)

Cong Is Capable Of Contesting Elections Alone On All Seats: Hooda

Cong Is Capable Of Contesting Elections Alone On All Seats: Hooda

With the Opposition alliance threatening to fall apart amid rising differences over seat-sharing, former Haryana Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition, Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Saturday said that the Congress party is capable of contesting elections alone on all the seats in Haryana.

The West Bengal CM had earlier ruled out allying with the Congress, saying her party was quite capable of going it alone in the state and defeating the BJP-led NDA.

Her nephew and top TMC leader, Abhishek Banerjee, blamed the Congress for the breakdown in seat-sharing talks, saying the grand old party dragged their feet in the matter.

Earlier, on Wednesday, the INDIA parties met in the national capital to discuss the seat-sharing agenda for the Lok Sabha elections.

Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi, NCP chief Sharad Pawar, DMK leader TR Baalu and CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury were pictured leaving Kharge’s residence after the meeting.

Cracks in the INDIA bloc widened with Mamata giving a cold shoulder to the Congress and Janata Dal (United) chief Nitish Kumar dealing a further blow to the alliance after returning to the BJP-led NDA.

One of the key architects of the Bloc, Nitish also pulled out of the Mahagathbandhan (grand alliance) in Bihar as he took oath as chief minister for the ninth time with support from the NDA.

Meanwhile, following Uttar Pradesh Congress in-charge Avinash Pandey’s remarks that the Samajwadi Party is adopting a ‘one-sided’ policy in Uttar Pradesh, the party’s Chief Akhilesh Yadav asserted on Wednesday that there will be an alliance in the state and that the seats will be allocated ‘properly’.

The Samajwadi Party (SP) announced the names of 16 candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The SP has offered 11 out of the 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh to the Congress. (ANI)

India In Driver's Seat Against England In Second Test

India In Driver’s Seat Against England In Second Test

India had England in trouble on the second day of the second Test here as they established a 171-run lead in the first innings after bowling out the visitors for 253 runs due to a decisive spell by pacer Jasprit Bumrah who took six wickets.

Earlier, India were bowled out for 396 with a superb double ton by young batter Yashasvi Jaiswal contributing more than half of those runs.

England resumed the post-Tea session on second day in the match being played at ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium at 155/4 with Jonny Bairstow (24) and Ben Stokes (5) on the crease.
