HC To Pass Judgment On AAP MLA Amanat Ullah Khan’s Aanticipatory Bail Plea On March 11

The Delhi High Court is scheduled to pass an order on AAP MLA Amanat Ullah Khan’s anticipatory bail application in the alleged Delhi Waqf Board Money Laundering case on March 11. His anticipatory bail was earlier dismissed by the trial court.

The bench of Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma on March 4 kept the order reserved after hearing the arguments of both sides at length. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal and advocate Rajat Bhardwaj appeared for Amanat Ullah Khan, while advocate Zoheb Hossain appeared for the Enforcement Directorate in the matter.

According to the petitioner’s lawyers, applicant Amanat Ullah Khan is not guilty of any criminal wrongdoing or any violation of the provisions of the PMLA in any manner. His life and liberty must be protected from unwarranted and unjustified encroachment at the hands of the respondent on the basis of a false, malicious and motivated case without any merit.

Lawyers alleged that the applicant is being targeted by the investigating agency by alleging baseless and frivolous allegations against the applicant. ED has implicated the accused in a false and concocted story and no case is made out against the applicant. There are reasonable grounds believing that the applicant is innocent and has no involvement whatsoever in the alleged offence.

There is no bribe amount involved, therefore there is no generation of proceeds of crime, which leaves no scope of Applicant’s involvement in any activity of placement, layering, and/or integration of any proceeds of crime and as such, there is no question of any violation of the provisions of the PMLA, argued Amanat’s lawyers.

On the other hand, it was submitted by the ED’s counsel that the petitioner has been issued several summons and he has been evading the same. The Rouse Avenue court on March 1 dismissed the anticipatory bail plea of AAP MLA Amanat Ullah Khan.

According to the ED, the case is related to the purchase of a property worth Rs 36 crore in the Okhla area on the alleged behest of Amanat Ullah Khan, who is also sitting MLA from that area. In this case, the court has dismissed the bail application of three accused, namely Zeeshan Haider, Daud Nasir and Jawed Imam Siddiqui.

A charge sheet was recently filed by the ED against four accused persons, including Qausar Imam Siddiqui. It has been alleged that Rs 100 crore Waqf Properties were given on lease illegally. It is also alleged that 32 contractual employees were appointed in Delhi Waqf Board during the chairmanship of Amanat Ullah Khan, flouting the rules. (ANI)

BJP Is Going To Find It Very Tough To Even Repeat 303: Shashi

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor thanked the grand old party on Friday for the opportunity to ‘defend his seat’ after he was named candidate from Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram, a seat he has held for three terms.

He further said that the “BJP is going to find it very tough to even repeat the 303 they had”.

He also pointed to the leaders jumping the ship ahead of polls and said that leaders shifting to other parties doesn’t mean that there is some conflict or confusion rather the “individuals have their own ambitions in politics.”

“I am honoured and humbled that the Congress party has given an opportunity to defend my seat. I have had the privilege of serving the people of Thiruvananthapuram for 15 years and I look forward to an opportunity to continue this process of service once more,” Shashi Tharoor said while addressing media after the party’s announcement.

“The other two parties have announced their candidates, I have a great deal of respect for them and I look forward to a fair and effective contest and I look forward to the opportunities to debate with them the ideas and policies that I stand for,” he said.

He further asserted on engaging in ‘constructive and positive politics’ and informed that he will be travelling to his constituency on Sunday.

“And I look forward very much to a constructive and focused campaign. In 15 years of politics, I have never needed to spend one day of negative campaigning or attacking anybody. I believe very much in constructive and positive politics,” Tharoor said.

“We have to give the people a choice and in a democracy, at the end of the day people will decide that is exactly the spirit in which I’m entering the race. I will be travelling from Sunday to be full-time in my constituency,” he said.

“The BJP is going to find it very tough to even repeat the 303 they had. I’m convinced at this time the BJP is going to lose the government. I have not seen any evidence of that. In every election, there’s always been somebody leaving some party and going to some other party. That doesn’t mean that’s conflict or confusion,” he said.

“It means that individuals have their own ambitions in politics and they want to pursue them elsewhere. I don’t see that BJP is immune from that either. Some people left the BJP also and went in other directions. These things happen. Certainly, those of us in the Congress party for the last few years have seen opportunities to serve the people and that’s why we are in politics. That’s what I’m doing in Thiruvananthapuram. I’m here to serve the people of my constituency,” he added.

Earlier in the day, Congress released its first list of candidates for 39 Lok Sabha constituencies.

The names have been announced for Lok Sabha seats in Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Kerala, Lakshwadeep, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Sikkim, Telangana and Tripura.

Of the total 39 candidates announced, 16 are from Kerala, seven from Karnataka and six from Chhattisgarh, four from Telangana. Two from Meghalaya and one each from Nagaland, Tripura, Sikkim and Lakshwadeep.

The list was released after the party held its Central Election Committee meeting on Thursday.

A total of 16 candidates have been announced from Kerala, including Shashi Tharoor from Thiruvananthapuram and Rahul Gandhi from Wayanad, seat he won in 2019.

Congress party’s second Election Committee meeting will be held on March 11 in Delhi to discuss the candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

The BJP has already released its first list of 195 candidates. The Lok Sabha polls are likely to be held in April-May this year. (ANI)

People's Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD)

Gupkar Alliance Was Unique, Sad That It Has Been Scattered: PDP Chief Mufti

People’s Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti on Friday expressed disappointment at the discontent prevailing in the People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) and said that without any consultations with PDP, National Conference went on to declare that it will fight from three Lok Sabha seats.

PDP chief said that it is sad to see the way the “Gupkar alliance has been scattered”.

Addressing reporters in Srinagar, Mehbooba Mufti said, “Omar Abdullah himself said that they’re not in the alliance. We wanted The People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) to continue but everyone knows who ended this PAGD. We will talk to Congress as we are in the INDIA alliance and see how to go forward.”

Mufti further added that Jammu and Kashmir has become a laboratory for whatever is happening in the country and parties should have tried to remain united in the valley.

“PAGD was a democratic and unique alliance but the way it has been scattered is very disappointing. Jammu and Kashmir is a laboratory for whatever is happening in the country that is facing a big challenge and hence we should have made a collective effort. We (PDP) made a lot of efforts, but he (Omar Abdullah) declared that they’ll contest all three seats, without any consultation from us. They have made PAGD a joke. PAGD was the lost hope for people,” she said.

Responding to the remarks made by NC leader Omar Abdullah that ” a party (PDP) who secured third position in 2019 Lok Sabha elections is trying to claim stakes on some of the Lok Seats”, Mufti said that even Farooq Abdullah lost Lok Sabha elections in 2014.

“So does this mean that he can never fight for election again? Omar Abdullah also lost an election earlier. Victories and losses are part of it. This does not mean that one cannot fight elections,” he said.

Earlier today, NC leader Omar Abdullah said that it is not the sole responsibility of the National Conference to follow “coalition dharma”.

“On their raising day (PDP), they target NC. What type of coalition Dharma is this? Why don’t you ask them when they target NC on social media handles? It is not the sole responsibility of National Conference to follow coalition dharma,” he said.

The People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) is an alliance between the several political parties in Jammu and Kashmir campaigning for autonomy for the region by restoring special status along with Article 35A of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir. It was founded in year 2020. (ANI)

Rohan Bopanna Mahesh Bhupathi

Doubles Great Bhupathi On Bopanna Becoming Oldest Grand Slam Champion

Coming out in praise of Indian doubles star Rohan Bopanna for being crowned the oldest Grand Slam champion after lifting this year’s Australian Open title at the age of 43, tennis great Mahesh Bhupathi termed the feat ‘mind-boggling’.

Speaking to ANI on the sidelines of the RevSportz’s Trailblazers 2.0 Conclave on Friday, Bhupathi, who formed one of the world’s greatest doubles pairs with Leander Paes and had 12 Major titles to his credit by the time he hung up his racquet, said he hoped that the big-serving Coorgi will produce more such performances and keep “India’s flag flying high”.

“I think Rohan has done incredibly well…for him to put in such an effort and win at 43. Mind-boggling and super proud…we hope that he stays in the game and keeps India’s flag flying high,” Bhupathi told ANI on the sidelines of the event.

Storming to the final of the year’s first Major on the back of some sizzling wins along with his Australian partner Matthew Ebden, the pair dominated on serve throughout the title clash, which spanned about an hour and forty minutes, winning 80 per cent (40/50) of games with their first delivery and not facing a break point to top off a fantastic week in Melbourne.

The duo defeated Italy’s Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori in straight sets 7-6, 7-5 in a thrilling final.

It was Bopanna’s second career Grand Slam title and his first in men’s doubles. His previous Grand Slam victory came in mixed doubles with Gabriela Dabrowski of Canada at the 2017 French Open.

On encouraging returns in singles by rising Indian tennis star Sumit Nagal, Bhupathi said the 26-year-old has ‘potential’ to be a real deal in the sport going forward but needs to work on the ‘variables’.

“He always had the potential. He always believed that he was a top-100 player. I believe he could be a top-50 player. But a lot of variables there, he needs to keep working at it and build on the momentum. He’s having a good run,” the doubles stalwart added.

Earlier, in January, Nagal’s campaign at the Bengaluru Open ended in the last-four stage, as he fell to a hard-fought 7-6(2), 6-4 loss to Italian Stephano Napolitano in the semi-final.

Meanwhile, Spanish tennis legend and 14-time French Open champion, Rafael Nadal, withdrew from the ongoing Indian Wells Masters on the eve of his first-round match, saying he was “not ready to play at the highest level”.

However, Nagal will be the Spaniard’s replacement at the tournament, becoming the first Indian to reach the main draw of an ATP Masters 1000 event since Prajnesh Gunneswaran in 2019 in Miami. (ANI)

Former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed

People Of Maldives Are Sorry Amid India Boycott Call: Mohd Nasheed

Former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed has voiced significant concerns regarding the ramifications of India’s boycott call on the Maldives, particularly in the context of tourism.

Nasheed, currently in India, conveyed apologies on behalf of the Maldivian people and emphasised their wish for Indian tourists to continue visiting the country.

Nasheed highlighted the impact of the boycott on the Maldives, stating, “It has impacted the Maldives a lot, and I am actually here in India. I’m very worried about this. I want to say the people of the Maldives are sorry, we are sorry that this has happened. We want Indian people to come on their holidays to the Maldives, and there will not be any change in our hospitality.”

He further praised the quick action taken by the current President in removing those responsible for the boycott.

“I think these matters must be ironed out, and we must revert back to change course and go back to our usual relationship,” he told ANI.

Reflecting on historical ties, Nasheed underscored India’s responsible approach during past challenges, stating, “When the president of the Maldives wanted Indian military personnel to leave, you know what India did? They did not twist their arms. They did not display muscle, but just simply told the government of Maldives, ‘Okay, let’s have a discussion on that.'”

Addressing recent discussions on the Dornier flight and helicopters, Nasheed urged President Mohamed Muizzu to cease such talks, saying, “It’s very unfortunate that President Muizzu had these discussions. I would call him to please stop these discussions on the Dornier flight and the helicopters. They were brought to the Maldives for medical evacuation, and there is a need for medical evacuation. Our islands are far-flung, and we don’t have developed hospitals on every island. So, there is very often a need to bring a patient to Male, and to do that quickly would be by air, so we need that.”

Nasheed also underlined the enduring friendship between India and the Maldives, rooted in mutual assistance and cooperation during times of need.

Meanwhile, on a recently signed defence agreement between Maldives and China, Nasheed said, “I don’t think it’s a defence agreement. I think that Muizzu wanted to buy some equipment, mainly rubber bullets and tear gas. It is very unfortunate that the government thought that there is a need for more tear gas and more rubber bullets. Governance is not through the barrel of the gun.”

However, sharing his views on elections in Maldives, Nasheed believes, the current government will not get the majority. (ANI)

SP-Cong Alliance Will Cost BJP Dear

SP-Cong Alliance Will Cost BJP Over 30 Lok Sabha Seats In UP

Rajeev Rai, national secretary and spokesperson of the Samajwadi Party, says their party’s alliance with the Congress will shake BJP to its roots in Uttar Pradesh. His views:

The recent and recurring failure of the Yogi Adityanath government to even conduct fair examinations for police recruitments in Uttar Pradesh has exposed the hollowness of their claims of good governance. If we go with the statistics, over three crore families have been affected with this paper leak forcing them to rethink about the competence of the BJP government. The ongoing wide-scale protests are an indication that Yogi government has lost its appeal among the state electorate. This will ultimately reflect in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections undoubtedly.

And then comes a final nail in their taboot (coffin) as the sealing of seat-sharing agreement between the Congress and the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh. The coming together of SP and Congress has consolidated the minority community that will vote for us strengthening our prospects and increasing our numbers substantially.

In addition, the inconsistent switch of loyalties by leaders like Om Prakash Rajbhar (SBSP) has angered the OBC community and they, along with a majority of voters of other communities, will be opting for candidates with higher moralities, self-respect and dignity. In my opinion, the BJP tally will be reduced by a minimum of 30 seats in the ensuing electoral battle in the state

The biggest election issue today is unemployment among the state youth. And the Uttar Pradesh janata is asking the BJP leaders that if they cannot properly conduct the competitive exams for police recruitment how are they going to solve the larger issue of creating jobs?

ALSO READ: Narendra Modi’s Southern Discomfort

This was not the first exam (ever since the BJP formed the government in UP in 2017) in which question papers were leaked. About nine competitive exams conducted in the past six years have been cancelled or suspended due to paper leak or corruption charges, forcing the youths to wait endlessly for gainful employment. They constantly live in the fear of getting over-age by the time the examinations are rescheduled/held cleanly.

Not only in UP, the BJP should wait for a shocker in neighboring states like Bihar too where the untiring efforts and the commitment of Tejashwi Yadav (RLD) will demolish the tally of the BJP. In addition, the constant inflation, pan-India unemployment are constantly adding to the discomfort of the people and the saffron party is heading to a substantial loss of over 20 seats in MP and over 70 seats in Maharashtra, West Bengal and Karnataka.

In addition, the results of the stronghold states of BJP that include Rajasthan, Gujarat, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh will also be a shocker and shattering the tall claims of 370 seats for the party and 400-plus seats for the NDA. You cannot win elections by simply painting rosy pictures and selling fake dreams continuously – the voter is now aware and is now fed up with the false promises and claims being made and sold continuously for the past ten years and the country stands united for a positive change.

As told to Rajat Rai

BJP Manik Saha

NDA Will Get More Than 400 Seats In LS Polls: Manik

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Friday exuded confidence in the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) victory in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and said that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) would get more than 400 seats.

Talking to ANI here, the Chief Minister said that there is no doubt that the BJP will win from the four seats here (in Malda division).

“I have spoken to various officials who have come here and I understand that there is a lot of enthusiasm among them that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will win and the BJP will form a government. PM Modi has given a target of 370 seats and I am hoping that NDA will get more than 400 seats,” he said.

The Chief Minister said that while attending various programs in Malda, he observed that the people of here have a lot of faith in PM Modi and the BJP.

“I came here yesterday as per the guidelines of the party and attended many programs. Today morning there was a program of Ghar Chalo Abhiyan and Wall painting at two places. I have seen that people have a lot of faith in Modiji and the Bharatiya Janata Party. Today I held the last meeting here, people from four districts of Malda division came here. There is no doubt that BJP will win from the four seats here,” he said.

While addressing people at the Booth President Sammelan in Malda, CM Saha also urged grassroots awareness for PM Modi’s progressive plans and criticized the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal for widespread violence, drawing parallels with the oppressive rule of the CPIM in Tripura.

“I am truly delighted to witness the warm reception extended to me. In 2018, thanks to the support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the BJP successfully established a government in Tripura. It was unexpected, considering we had no MLAs or people’s representatives. Despite these challenges, we formed the government. The persecution we faced from the CPIM in Tripura and what Trinamool is doing here is almost similar. TMC carried out the same tactics as CPIM, but on a larger scale. In Tripura, we united under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to counter this oppression, and I urge you all to do the same. The progress our country is experiencing is largely due to the efforts of the Prime Minister.” said Tripura CM Saha.

CM Manik Saha emphasized that seeking positions within the BJP would bring no real benefit, citing his own experience as a Vistarak.

He highlighted the importance of standing against oppressors to strengthen the BJP.

“People have witnessed the incidents in Sandeshkhali, and similar occurrences are taking place in various parts of West Bengal. The state’s landscape has changed, and people are uniting against this. I am confident that in the upcoming days, BJP will secure more seats than before in West Bengal. The Trinamool Congress has gone beyond acceptable limits,” said the Tripura Chief Minister.

Tripura CM Saha urged citizens to focus on the grassroots level, visiting every household to convey the positive impact of Prime Minister Modi’s initiatives.

“The Prime Minister is dedicated to real development and empowering women. The number of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) has increased in Tripura. Bengal was once known for eminent personalities like Dr. Shayma Prasad Mukherjee, Bankimchandra Chatterjee, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Rabindranath Tagore, but now we witness only violence. This is not politics, and the people will not accept it,” the Tripura CM added. (ANI)

Tamil Nadu LS DMK

LS Polls: DMK Seals Seat Pact With Two Allies In TN

Repeating the 2019 pact with its allies- Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in Tamil Nadu finalised seat-sharing agreements for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

VCK MP Thol. Thirumavalavan, while speaking to the reporters here said that his party was allotted two seats, both reserved constituencies while the Vaiko-led MDMK was given one by the alliance’s lead partner.

“We have followed the same formula that was followed in the last Parliament elections. All parties agreed on this formula. In the 2019 Parliament elections, communist parties and VCK got two seats each. MDMK got one seat and similarly, in this election, we have agreed on the same formula…” Thol. Thirumavalavan said.

Thol. Thirumavalavan further said that his party will contest on its own symbol, the earthen pot, and has requested the Election Commission to allot it a general symbol as it would be fielding its nominees from around 15 seats in Karnataka, Kerala and Telangana as well.

In the 2019 elections, the MDMK was given one Lok Sabha seat (which it won) and one in the Rajya Sabha.

Thol Thirumavalavan and Vaiko finalised and signed the seat-sharing agreement with DMK President and Chief Minister MK Stalin at the ruling party headquarters, Anna Arivalayam, here.

The DMK has so far finalised seat-sharing deals with allies’ CPI (M), CPI, IUML and KMDK, besides VCK and MDMK.

Stalin’s party has, allotted two seats each to the Communist Party of India and CPIM, as well as one each to the Indian Union Muslim League and the Kongu Desa Makkal Katchi. In 2019 too, the CPI and CPIM contested four (and won four) and the IUML and KDMK one each, which they won.

In Tamil Nadu, the Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA)-led by DMK won 38 out of the 39 LS seats in the state.

The elections for Lok Sabha is expected to be held in April-May this year. (ANI)

Sanctioned Companies Not In Violation Of Indian Law: MEA

Committed To Early Release Of Indians Duped To Work For Russian Army: MEA

Several Indian nationals have been “duped” to work with the Russian Army, stated Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday, adding that the Indian government has taken a strong stance on the matter, urging the Russian government for the early discharge of such individuals.

The MEA further stated that action has been initiated against agents and unscrupulous elements who are involved in recruiting Indian nationals on false pretexts.

Addressing the issue, MEA spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal said, “Several Indian Nationals have been duped to work with the Russian Army. We have strongly taken up the matter with the Russian government for early discharge of such Indian nationals. Strong action has been initiated against agents and unscrupulous elements who recruited them on false pretexts and promises.”

He added that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had recently busted a major human trafficking network after conducting searches in various cities and gathering incriminating evidence.

The spokesperson also confirmed that a case of human trafficking has been registered against multiple agents involved in the illicit recruitment.

“The CBI yesterday busted a major human trafficking network, conducting searches in several cities and collecting incriminating evidence. A case of human trafficking has been registered against several agents,” said Jaiswal.

Expressing concern for the well-being of the affected individuals, Jaiswal appealed to Indian nationals, “to not be swayed by offers made by agents for support jobs with the Russian Army”.

He emphasised the inherent danger and risk to life associated with such arrangements.

“We remain committed to the early release of our nationals serving as support staff with the Russian Army and their eventual return home,” assured Jaiswal.

He also said that that approximately 20 individuals have reached out to MEA seeking assistance, and efforts are underway to locate and help them.

The MEA is in continuous communication with Russian authorities, pressing for the swift release and discharge of the duped Indian nationals, he also said.

Notably, the CBI on Thursday busted a major human trafficking network running across the country targeting Indian nationals on the promise of offering lucrative jobs abroad but allegedly sending them to the Russia-Ukraine war zone. The central agency is conducting simultaneous searches at around 13 locations in Delhi, Trivandrum, Mumbai, Ambala, Chandigarh, Madurai and Chennai.

The CBI stated that these traffickers have been operating as an organized network and were luring Indian nationals through social media channels like YouTube etc. and also through their local contacts/agents for highly paid jobs in Russia.

Thereafter, the trafficked Indian nationals were trained in combat roles and deployed at front bases in the Russia-Ukraine War zone against their wishes, thus, putting their lives in grave danger. It has been ascertained that some of the victims also got grievously injured in the war zone.

Certain suspects have also been detained for questioning at various locations. So far around 35 instances of victims sent abroad have been established. The identity of more trafficking victims is also being established. The investigation is still underway. Meanwhile, an appeal has been made to the general public not to fall prey to such false promises of jobs by dubious recruitment agencies and agents. (ANI)
