Vashu Bhagnani

Mujhe Ek Hindustan UK Mein Banana Hai: Vashu Bhagnani

“Mujhe ek Hindustan UK mein banana hai,” veteran producer Vashu Bhagnani’s words efficiently sum up his dream of leaving a global footprint of the illustrious Indian cinema with his film studio in the UK.

Touted as “one-stop-shop”, Bhagnani’s Pooja Studios emerged as one of the most film-friendly shooting hubs lately. Built over three years ago in the UK, the studio is spread over a large area in the UK’s Luton. It is just “36 miles from London.”

The studio has enabled the shoot for Akshay Kumar-starrers ‘Bellbottom’ and ‘Mission Raniganj’, Rakul Preet Singh’s ‘Cuttputlli’ and Ajay Devgn’s latest ‘Shaitaan’ so far.

Speaking to ANI, Bhagnani opened up about his studio in detail.

” I am a dreamer. At the age of 57, I decided that I would go to London and set up a studio there. Not many people know that I have a studio in the UK. Movies like Bellbottom, Mission Raniganj were filmed at my studio. All coal mine scenes in Raniganj were shot at Pooja Studios. In fact, the scenes portrayed as Dubai and Pakistan in Bellbottom were actually shot at our studio in UK. Almost 80 per cent of Shaitaan was shot there…the big farmhouse which you saw in Shaitaan was created at my studio only,” he shared.

” Over 400 people from India travelled to UK for the shoot of ‘Ganapath’ and ‘Raniganj’. Also, one of my main reasons for establishing this studio was to create jobs for my Indian people and make them explore the world… It’s my dream to be a good developer as well,” he added.

Bhagnani also explained what made him establish the film studio abroad.

” In India, we sometimes face security issues as people come in large numbers on sets … so it becomes difficult for us to shoot,” he said, emphasising he is a true blue Indian and is aiming to make Indian cinema reach different parts of the world.

“I would be lying if I say I am not getting monetary benefits from this studio but my utmost priority is to help my fellow colleagues in the Indian film industry by providing them with a studio which has all the facilities. From best equipment to spacious area and food, the studio has everything. I have put my heart and soul in establishing this studio. It is like a one-stop shop. Come inside you will get everything…1947 se phle Britishers humare yaha aaye the aur ab mujhe unke yaha is studio ke zariye ek Hindustan UK mein banana hai,” Bhagnani said.

However, it was not easy for the ‘Coolie No. 1’ producer to create his studio on the foreign soil.

“Filmmaking is not an easy business. We all have to take risks…From trucks, bikes to little little equipment, we transported everything from India to there…It’s a pain but we did it. I am working in the UK but for India only,” Bhagnani added.

Bhagnani’s passion for cinema knows no bounds. His studio is relatively new but has managed to find a strong foothold in the filmmaking business.

In the coming months, Shahid Kapoor’s Ashwatthama: The Saga Continues will also go on floors there.

“This year we will also start shooting for Shahid’s Ashwatthama: The Saga Continues at our Pooja Studios .. maybe in May or June,” Bhagnani revealed.

Several scenes of Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff-starrer upcoming film ‘Bade Miyan Chote Miyan’ have been shot at Bhagnani’s UK studio.

Bhagnani also shared how the British Film Institute (BFI) has supported them to set up the studio in the UK

“Bade Miyan Chote Miyan is the first Bollywood production from the British Film Institute (BFI) that has been shot in a grand manner…BFI chief executive Ben Roberts has helped us a lot..he is the main guy,” Bhagnani said.(ANI)

BJP Seeks Stringent Action Against Rahul Over EVM Remark

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday wrote to the Election Commission (ED) and urged the poll body to take “stringent action” against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his “election can’t be won without EVM” remark.

BJP underlined Rahul Gandhi’s speech at the Ramlila Maidan Maharally in Delhi and claimed that Rahul Gandhi said several things “which are very objectionable.”

“He said ‘This is a fixed match’…He also said that the government has its own people in the EC and the elections can’t be won without EVM…He also said that the rights provided by the Indian Constitution are being snatched away,” Hardeep Singh Puri said while lashing out at the Congress.

“Rahul Gandhi’s address at the rally contained inflammatory remarks aimed at sowing seeds of doubt and distrust in the minds of the Indian populace regarding the electoral process and the impartiality of the Election Commission of India,” they added.

“Take a comprehensive view of the design and patterns of INC misleading campaign and propaganda and its leaders who not only create disaffection amongst the people but habitually and serially commit electoral offences by violating every single covenant of MCC and healthy democratic conventions,” the BJP urged the Election Commission.

The BJP asked the poll body to take effective steps in enforcing and ensuring fair play and adherence to constitutional provisions together with electoral and other statutes, including the MCC.

They further asked the Election Commission to direct Rahul Gandhi to tender an unconditional public apology to the Nation, the Election Commission of India and the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi for making false allegations and distortions against them.

“Direct the registration of an FIR against Rahul Gandhi and Yatindra Siddaramiah under the stringent provisions of law,” they stated in the letter.

Addressing the public at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan, Rahul Gandhi on Sunday said, “If the BJP wins these match-fixed elections, and changes the Constitution, the whole country will be on fire. Remember this.”

Rahul Gandhi further alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is trying to fix the elections in his favour.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi is trying to do match fixing in these elections. Without EVMs, match-fixing, social media, and pressurizing the press, they cannot win more than 180 seats,” Wayanad MP said.

He further said that the Constitution will cease to exist if the BJP registers victory in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

“The day this match fixing becomes successful, our Constitution will cease to exist right there. These are not ordinary elections. These elections are to save the future of India, and the rights of farmers. The whole country knows match fixing is going on,” he said.

Displaying a show of strength at the capital’s Ramlila Maidan on Sunday, Opposition leaders staged a protest against the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in connection with the Delhi liquor policy case. (ANI)

Udhayanidhi Made Remarks Voluntarily; Can’t Claim Same Immunity As Media

The Supreme Court on Monday told the Tamil Nadu minister and DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin that he cannot claim to be in the same position as media and news channels while seeking clubbing of multiple FIRs registered against him for his “eradicate Sanatan Dharma” remark.

“You (Stalin) have made the statements voluntarily,” said a bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta.

The observation of the bench came as Stalin, while seeking the apex court’s intervention to club all the FIRs lodged against him in the matter, relied on judgements rendered by the Supreme Court in cases involving journalists such as Republic TV anchor Arnab Goswami, Mohammed Zubair, Amish Devgan and Nupur Sharma.

The bench said, “After all, you have made the statements voluntarily. And the cases you cited–those were news media people who were working as per the diktats of their bosses to get TRPs. You cannot compare yourself to the media.”

Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for them highlighted the case of BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma, against whom multiple FIRs were lodged in different States and later transferred to one State.

“Nupur Sharma is a pure politician,” Singhvi told the bench.

The top court then questioned why Stalin had filed a petition before the Supreme Court under Article 32 (remedies for enforcement of fundamental rights) of the Constitution instead of invoking Section 406 (power of Supreme Court to transfer cases and appeals) of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).

The bench then ordered Stalin to amend his plea and file it under Section 406 CrPC and listed the matter for hearing in the week commencing on May 6.

Earlier, the apex court frowned upon Stalin over his remarks calling for the eradication of ‘Sanatana Dharma’ and told him that he is “not a layman but a minister” and he should know the consequences of his remarks.

“You abuse your rights under freedom of speech and expression and right to freedom of religion and then come to Supreme Court for protection under Article 32? Do you not know the consequences of what you said?,” the bench had asked Stalin’s counsel.

Stalin approached the apex court seeking clubbing of multiple FIRs registered against him in several states over his remarks.

He sought relief from the top court to club all the FIRs, saying FIRs are registered in Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir and Maharashtra.

DMK leader Stalin made remarks comparing ‘Sanatana Dharma’ to diseases like ‘malaria’ and ‘dengue’ while advocating for its elimination on the grounds that it was rooted in the caste system and historical discrimination.

His remarks triggered a massive political controversy across the country. It led to several criminal complaints being filed against him. (ANI)

Gyanvapi Hindu side

Gyanvapi: SC Refuses Stay Allowing Puja In Vyas Tehkhana

The Supreme Court on Monday refused to stay the Allahabad High Court order, which had upheld the Varanasi district court’s order allowing Hindus to perform prayers of deities inside the ‘Vyas Tehkhana’, southern celler of Gyanvapi mosque.

A bench of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra ordered the Hindu and Muslim sides to maintain the status quo at the Gyanvapi premises to enable both communities to offer ‘puja’ and ‘namaz’.

The status quo should not be altered without the permission of the apex court, said the bench.

The bench took note that the access to the Tehkhana where the ‘puja’ is held and the area where Muslims pray are different.

The top court said that Hindus would enter from the South and pray in Tehkhana and Muslims would enter from the Northern side for prayer.

“At this stage, bearing in mind the fact that namaz is being offered by Muslim communities unhindered after the district court and High Court orders and that prayers in Tehkhana are limited to the Hindu priests, it is important to maintain the status quo, so that both communities can perform religious worship in above terms,” the bench stated in its order.

During the hearing, the apex court also noted the Muslims were offering prayer unhindered and the offering of ‘puja’ was confined to the area of Tehkhana only.

“Are we correct to say that prayers in the South (cellar) do not impact (Muslim) prayers In North. If this is correct.. we can say let no further change happen in the status quo further. We say let namaz continue and worship in the south cellar can continue,” said CJI Chandrachud during the hearing.

It further issued notice to Hindu plaintiffs on an appeal of mosque committee challenging an order of Allahabad High Court over ‘puja’ of deities inside the ‘Vyas Tehkhana’.

The top court now posted the matter for hearing in July.

Mosque committee filed appeal against High Court order contending that the administration was acting in ‘hot haste’ soon after the Varanasi Court’s order to perform the ‘Puja’ at night.

On January 31, Varanasi district court allowed the Hindu side to offer prayers in the southern cellar of Gyanvapi mosque. The court directed the Varanasi district magistrate to make arrangements within seven days for ‘puja’ to be performed by the Hindu side and a poojari nominated by Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple Trust.

After the order of the court, ‘puja’ and ‘aarti’ are being performed there.

The district court has issued the order on the plea of head priest of Acharya Ved Vyas Peeth temple, Shailendra Kumar Pathak Vyas, seeking worship of Shringar Gauri and other visible, and invisible deities in the cellar of the mosque. Vyas is the scion of the family which was performing ‘puja’ in this cellar till December 1993.

The plea had said Vyas’s maternal grandfather, priest Somnath Vyas, used to perform prayers there till 1993 when the cellar was closed by the authorities.

The ASI survey, ordered by the same court, in connection with a related case, suggested that the mosque was constructed during Aurangzeb’s rule over the remains of a Hindu temple. (ANI)

Katchatheevu island

They Simply Did Not Care: Jaishankar On Katchatheevu Controversy

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday reiterated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s accusation against the Opposition regarding the Katchatheevu island row stating that the the country’s first Prime Minister, wanted to give away the island to Sri Lanka.

The issue pertains to the year 1974 when the then Indira Gandhi government had accepted the island was a Sri Lankan area under the India-Sri Lankan maritime agreement.

The issue has again resurfaced after a media report based on a RTI reply received by Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai on the 1974 pact.

PM Modi yesterday shared a statement by late DMK MP Era Sezhiyan expressing anger at the India-Sri Lanka Maritime Agreement signed by the then Indira Gandhi government by which India relinquished its claim on Katchatheevu Island and called it “an unholy agreement.”

Addressing a press conference in the national capital, EAM S Jaishankar said, “Today, it is important for the public to know and the people to judge, this issue has been hidden too long from the gaze of the public.”

“… We are talking about 1958 and 1960… The main people in the case wanted to make sure that at least we should get the fishing rights… The island was given away in 1974 and the fishing rights were given away in 1976… One, the most basic recurring (aspect) is the indifference shown by the then central government and the PMs about the territory of India…

“That fact is they simply did not care…,” Jaishankar said in his press conference.

“In an observation given by the then PM Jawaharlal Nehru in May 1961, he wrote, ‘I attach no importance at all to this little island and I would have no hesitation in giving up our claim to it. I do not like matters like this pending indefinitely and being raised again and again in parliament.’ So, to Pandit Nehru, this was a little island, it had no importance, he saw it as a nuisance… For him, the sooner you give it away, the better… This view continued on to Indira Gandhi as well…” the EAM added.

The External affairs minister put the Congress in the dock for completely ignoring Indian concerns on the island.

“The PM (Indira Gandhi) is said to have remarked in the AICC meeting that this is a little rock. I am reminded of those days when Pandit Nehru called our northern boundary as a place where not a blade of grass grew. I would like to remind them that after this historic statement by PM Nehru, he never regained the confidence of the country. The same was going to happen to the PM (Indira Gandhi) when she says that this is only a little rock and that there is nothing to worry about the territories of our country.’… So, this is not just one PM… This dismissive attitude…was the historic Congress attitude towards Katchatheevu…” Jaishankar said.
