Congress Was Always Soft In Handling Terrorism: Nirmala

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman attacked the Congress party on Saturday, claiming that the party’s approach towards terror has always been “weak and soft” and that terror incidents were tolerated during the Congress’ tenure without a serious response.

Sitharaman said, “You saw it during the ten years of Congress rule how terror attacks were tolerated, proper response was not given. They believed in sending dossiers to Pakistan. The attitude and approach of the Congress party towards terror has always been weak and soft.”

Earlier on May 2, Prime Minister Narendra Modi targeted the previous UPA government accusing it of giving “dossiers” to terrorists while alleging a partnership between Congress and Pakistan.

Calling it a “coincidence”, the Prime Minister said that the Congress party is weakening in India adding that Pakistan leaders are offering “dua” (prayers) for the party to return to power.

Referring to the UPA rule as ‘shaasankaal’ (reign) and the current NDA rule as ‘sevakaal’ (service period), PM Modi accused Congress of trying to divide the country.

Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy on Friday asked questions from the government over the Pulwama terror attack in 2019.

The Chief Minister accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of trying to reap “political benefits” from the Pulwama incident after Indian Air Force carried out air strikes at a terror camp in Pakistan.

He also raised questions over the air strikes. The terror attack on a CRPF convoy killed 40 personnel.”Modiji attempted to extract political and electoral benefits from the airstrikes after the Pulwama incident. I want to ask him: What were you doing? Why did you let it happen? What did you do to boost the country’s internal security? Why did you not take the help of the agencies at your disposal such as the IB and R&AW? It was your failure. Nobody knows for sure if the airstrike, as was claimed, took place. If the responsibility of ensuring the country’s internal security was with us, we wouldn’t have left it in anyone’s hands,” Reddy wrote on X.

Earlier on May 4, Sitharaman accused the Congress Party of politicising the alleged obscene video case of the sitting MP and candidate from Hassan Lok Sabha constituency, Prajwal Revanna.

While replying to a question about whether the row over Prajwal Revanna would affect the BJP in Karnataka during the Lok Sabha election and the ticket given to Brij Bhushan Saran’s son in UP, despite Brij Bhushan facing an inquiry over allegations of sexual harassment by women wrestlers, Sitharam said that the BJP strongly stands against dynastic politics.

The Finance Minister further alleged that the case regarding the Revanna is with the state government, which is governed by Congress, which did not act on the case for an entire year.

She also said that the Karnataka government, by targeting the BJP, is now writing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the case, asking to issue lookout notices against Revanna and bring him back.

Speaking about Brij Bhushan Saran’s son- Karan Singh getting a ticket from BJP from Kaiserganj, the Finance Minister said that the allegations have not been proved against Brij Bhushan. (ANI)

BJP Will be Single Largest Party in South India: Amit Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah asserted that the Bharatiya Janata Party will emerge as the single largest party in the southern states, including Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Kerala when the results will be announced on June 4.

Addressing a press conference in Telangana’s Hyderabad on Saturday, Amit Shah expressed confidence in BJP “making a sweep” in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana where the voting is scheduled to be held on May 13 in the fourth phase.

“In the last three phases of the election, the BJP-led NDA and its constituents have reached the mark of 200 seats. We expect good results from the fourth phase too, and we will move towards our goal of 400 seats. The polling in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana is scheduled in the fourth phase. In both the states, NDA and BJP will make a clean sweep,” Shah said.

“On the day of results, that is on June 4, the BJP will emerge as the single largest party in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. In these states, the BJP will get the most number of seats. In Telangana, we will win more than 10 seats,” he added.

Shah also hit out at the Congress party and its alliance partners accusing them of corruption worth crores as he highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 10-year tenure.

“On one hand, there is the Congress and its allies who are involved in corruption and scams worth around Rs 12 lakh crores. On the other hand, there is Narendra Modi, who has not been accused of corruption of even 25 paise despite being the Chief Minister for 23 years or Prime Minister for 10 years,” the Home Minister said.

He further emphasised that under PM Modi’s leadership, the Indian economy is in 5th position globally.

“As soon as the heat increases, some leaders regularly go on holiday to Thailand, Bangkok. On the other side is Narendra Modi who has not taken leave even on Diwali day for the last 23 years. On Diwali, he celebrates with the soldiers who protect the country on the borders,” he said.

“The economy of India has been handled expertly by Modi ji. We are fortunate to have a leader like Modi Ji. On the other hand, Rahul Yaan has been launched unsuccessfully 20 times and an attempt is being made to launch him for the 21st time,” Shah said.

Lashing out at the ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) in Telangana and the Congress party, Shah accused both parties of indulging in vote bank politics and “derailing the development” in the state.

“When Telangana state was formed, it was revenue surplus. However, today, it’s under huge debt. The governments of BRS and Congress have derailed the development of Telangana. In the last 10 years, Modi ji has done a lot for the development of Telangana. Congress and BRS indulge in the politics of the vote bank, and they are neck-deep in corruption. Parivarvaad, corruption, bad governance and appeasement are four malices that have caused a lot of trouble to the people of Telangana. I’m sure that this time, the people of Telangana will give us a record number of MPs from the state,” Shah asserted.

The BJP leader also took a dig at All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader Asaduddin Owaisi and alleged that the “steering wheel” of the Telangana government is in the hands of Owaisi.

“The steering wheel of the govt of Telangana is in the hands of Owaisi, irrespective of whether the government is of BRS or Congress. Both these parties, to forward their agenda of appeasement, have outsourced the running of the government to Majlis,” he said.

Shah pointing out the interim bail given to Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal said that the CM has to surrender on June 2 and it is not a “clean chit”.

“The Supreme Court has given interim bail to Kejriwal only for the election campaign. He had filed a case in the Supreme Court that my arrest was wrong, which the Supreme Court did not accept. Then he modified it to grant me bail, but that too was not accepted by the Supreme Court. He has been granted bail till the 1st date only to campaign for the elections and has to surrender again on the 2nd. If Arvind Kejriwal considers this a clean chit, then his understanding of the law is very weak,” he said.

CM Kejriwal was released from Tihar Jail on Saturday after the Supreme Court granted him interim bail till June 1 to participate in electioneering for the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.

On CM Kejriwal’s remarks on Shah being PM if BJP wins pointing out PM Modi turning 75, Amit Shah said that there is no confusion in BJP and that PM Modi will continue to lead the country in future.

“I want to say this to Arvind Kejriwal and company and INDI alliance that nothing as such is mentioned in BJP’s constitution. PM Modi is only going to complete this tenure and PM Modi will continue to lead the country in future. There is no confusion in BJP,” Shah said.

Earlier in the day, CM Kejriwal questioned “Modi’s guarantee” as he pointed out that the Prime Minister is turning 75 this year and a possibility of his retirement.

“These people ask the INDIA alliance who will be their Prime Minister. I ask BJP who will be your Prime Minister? PM Modi is turning 75, on 17th September. He made a rule that leaders in the party would retire after 75 years. LK Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, Sumitra Mahajan, and Yashwant Sinha were retired and now PM Modi is going to retire on 17th September. If their government is formed, they will first dispose of Yogi Adityanath and then make Amit Shah the Prime Minister of the country. PM Modi is asking for votes for Amit Shah. Will Amit Shah fulfil Modi’s guarantee?,” Delhi CM Kejriwal said.

The voting in both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh will be held in a single phase on May 13 in the third phase of the Lok Sabha elections. The polling is held in 17 seats in Telangana and 25 seats in Andhra. The assembly elections for 175 seats in the Andhra Pradesh legislative assembly will also be held on the same date. The results will be announced on June 4. (ANI)

Kejriwal Should Not Have Accepted Bail If He Had Self-Respect: Biswa Sarma

A day after the Supreme Court granted interim bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in a money laundering case, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday said that the AAP leader should not have accepted such a bail if he had the self-respect.

“Any person who has a little bit of self-respect would not have come out of jail on such a bail. He should have told the Supreme Court that I don’t want such a bail but Kejriwal has no shame left,” he said.

Meanwhile, Kejriwal said that no other party has been allegedly “harassed to this extent in the past 75 years”.

He targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who he said is claiming to “fight” corruption, “but all the thieves are in his party”.

“…No other party has been harassed to this extent in 75 years. The Prime Minister is saying that he is fighting corruption but all the thieves are in his party,” he claimed.

He also warned that all the opposition leaders, including Chief Ministers Mamata Banerjee, and MK Stalin would be sent to jail in case the BJP-led NDA comes to power after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

“They will send opposition leaders to jail and will finish them (Nipta denge) …Our ministers, Hemant Soren (former Jharkhand CM), ministers of Mamata Banerjee’s party (Trinamool Congress) are in jail…If they (BJP) win again, then Mamata Banerjee, MK Stalin, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Uddhav Thackeray (UBT Chief) and other opposition leaders all would be sent in jail…,” Kejriwal said while addressing a joint press conference.

Kejriwal asked BJP who will become the Prime Min ister if BJP wins the polls as PM Modi made a rule that that leaders in the party would retire after 75 years and PM Modi will turn 75 on September 17 this year.

“…These people ask the INDIA alliance who will be their Prime Minister. I ask BJP who will be your Prime Minister? PM Modi is turning 75, on 17th September. He made a rule that leaders in the party would retire after 75 years…LK Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, Sumitra Mahajan, and Yashwant Sinha were retired and now PM Modi is going to retire on 17th September…If their government is formed, they will first dispose of Yogi Adityanath and then make Amit Shah the Prime Minister of the country. PM Modi is asking for votes for Amit Shah. Will Amit Shah fulfil Modi’s guarantee?, Kejriwal added.

Aam Admi Party National Convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal received a big relief from the Supreme Court, which on Friday granted him interim bail till June 1 in the excise policy case.

A bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Dutta granted the Delhi Chief Minister interim bail in the money laundering case registered against him by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the Delhi excise policy case.

Kejriwal was arrested by the ED on March 21 in connection with a money laundering probe relating to alleged irregularities in the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy 2021-22. (ANI)

Whatever Modi Says Is Just For Elections: Priyanka

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said that his words do not carry any weight and are intended only to gather votes during elections.

She was addressing an election rally in Nandurbar, Maharashtra.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said, “Whatever PM Modi says has no weight. Whatever he says is just for the elections. He says that he is fighting for corruption alone. You have the power and all the resources. All the leaders of the world are with you. How can you be alone? He comes during elections and starts crying, saying that he was abused. He should learn determination and bravery from Indira Gandhi. But, you cannot learn from her because you call such a great woman anti-national.”

Citing the example of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, she said that the Prime Minister should learn from her, who divided Pakistan into two parts.

She said, “The foundation of Congress’ political tradition was laid by Mahatma Gandhi. He said that follow the path of truth. Following that, all the leaders of Congress learned that people are supreme in democracy. It is our duty to serve you. It is our responsibility to understand your life. But the BJP has an opposite ideology. They do not understand and respect your culture. Whenever they get an opportunity, they try to change your culture… The biggest leaders of the BJP have been silent wherever there have been atrocities on tribal communities.”

PM Modi on Friday attacked Congress and said that the party knows that they can’t compete with Modi on development and hence they have opened “jhooth ki factory” (factory of lies) in this election.

Addressing a public meeting in Maharashtra’s Nandurbar, PM Modi said that for him, serving the deprived and Adivasis is just like “serving” his own family.

“For me, serving the deprived and Adivasis is just like serving my own family. I don’t belong to a royal family like that of Congress. I come from a humble background. I have grown up in poverty. I can understand what is suffering. I can understand your pain,” PM Modi said.

Maharashtra, with its 48 Lok Sabha seats, is the second-largest contributor to the lower house of Parliament. The polling is being held in five phases: April 19, April 26, May 7, May 13 and May 20.

In the 2019 elections, the BJP emerged as the largest party with 23 seats, followed by its ally Shiv Sena (undivided) with 18 seats. The Nationalist Congress Party (undivided) and Congress could only win four and one seats each. (ANI)

Narendra Modi 100 day programme

Modi Predicts NDA Sweep In Andhra, Telangana

Predicting a clean sweep for the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Andhra Pradesh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he never considered Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy as an ‘ally’.

In an interview with NTV, a Telugu news channel, PM Modi said the incumbent YSRCP regime in the state led by Jagan wouldn’t be voted back in the state elections.

The BJP is contesting the Lok Sabha and the assembly elections in the state in alliance with its NDA partners–the Chandrababu Naidu-led Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and actor-turned-politician Pawan Kalyan’s JanaSena Party.

“I don’t believe that the present government in Andhra Pradesh will be voted back. The state’s economy is in dire straits presently. We never considered Jagan as a potential ally. However, their (YSRCP’s) members did support us in certain issues in Parliament,” PM Modi said.

YSRCP members in the Rajya Sabha had voted in favour of the Government of National Capital Territory (Amendment) Bill when it came to a vote in the Upper House of the Parliament. The draft legislation on the allocation of administrative powers in the national capital was introduced by the BJP-led NDA.

“Even earlier, we fought elections as opponents. We never went into polls as allies and always remained at the opposite ends of the political spectrum. I hold a constitutional post and my mandate is to make all states strong, regardless of who is in power. I am committed as much to the development of Andhra Pradesh as I am to other states. This is my constitutional duty,” PM Modi added.

Expressing confidence in the BJP-led NDA raking in the bulk of the electoral spoils in the state, PM Modi said, “The BJP and TDP are fighting the ongoing elections as partners in the NDA. The JanaSena is also with us this time. From the turnout and public involvement in our rallies and roadshows, I can say with confidence that the NDA will not only win the majority of Lok Sabha seats here but will also form the next government in Andhra Pradesh.”

Expanding on why he sees the NDA mopping up the poll sweepstakes in neighbouring Congress-ruled Telangana this time as well, he added, “I see the same green shoots for the BJP in Telagana as I did in Gujarat back in 2018-19. Also, from the vibes that we have been getting from the people on the campaign trail, I see a clean sweep for us (in Telangana) this time.”

Also stressing the importance of carrying like-minded regional partners along, PM Modi said, “I believe that as national parties, we should respect and address the aspirations of regional parties as well.”

“If regional parties are with us, it makes it all the more easier for us to work towards realising their aspirations. When it comes to states such as Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, we need more parties to join hands with us. No matter how big we are, we will be forever committed to taking our regional partners along and working towards fulfilling their goals and aspirations,” he added.

Taking a swipe at the ruling Congress in Telangana, PM Modi said the grand old party was never the ‘first choice’ for the people when it came to electing the government. “The Congress came to power in the state only a few months ago, riding on a clear mandate and a handsome majority. However, this government has failed at every level. My sense is that there was a lot of pent-up public anger against the BRS (Bharat Rashtra Samithi), which was translated into votes in favour of the Congress. I don’t think the Congress was the first choice for the people in Telangana.”

Asserting that the present ruling parties in Andhra and Telangana do not have a clear vision or roadmap for the development of these states, PM Modi drew a comparison of these two regimes with the BJP-ruled Chhattisgarh, saying, “The governments of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have no vision for the development of these states. Chhattisgarh had only recently been carved out as a separate state (from Madhya Pradesh) when we got a chance to serve the people there. Our government worked towards giving a new shape and direction to Chhattisgarh. Today, the state is home to a vibrant economy. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana also had similar opportunities to expand and progress but the leaders (in the ruling parties) either kept fighting among themselves or picking fights with the central government.”

Sharing his vision for these states, including the development of public infrastructure while marking simultaneous strides in agriculture and urbanisation and ensuring social justice, PM Modi said, “More needs to be done to speed up the development of advanced infrastructure (in these states). At the same time, the agricultural development in the rural regions should also be given priority.”

“Urbanisation in this era is inevitable and I believe that 5-7 cities of the state should be developed with modern amenities and brought at par with cities elsewhere. Hyderabad should be developed as a global city. It is not just a capital city but has a global image to protect and advance,” PM Modi added.

“I also believe that social justice is equally important. The Madiga community has been tortured for so long. I have said openly that I stand with the Madiga people. I will also work towards protecting the rights of the Scheduled Castes in the state,” he said.

Voting for all 17 Lok Sabha seats in Telangana will take place on May 13, in the fourth phase of the general elections while elections to the 175-member Assembly and 25 Lok Sabha seats in Andhra Pradesh are also scheduled to be held on the same day.

As part of a seat-sharing deal reached between the NDA partners, the TDP will contest 144 Assembly and 17 Lok Sabha constituencies in Andhra while the BJP will put up candidates in 6 Lok Sabha and 10 Assembly constituencies. The JanaSena will contest two Lok Sabha and 21 Assembly seats.

The counting of votes for all phases is scheduled for June 4. (ANI)

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal seeking bail

They Will Send All Opposition Leaders To Jail: Kejriwal

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal claimed on Saturday that no other party has been allegedly “harassed to this extent in the 75 years”.

He targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who he said is claiming to “fight” corruption, “but all the thieves are in his party”.

He also warned that all the opposition leaders including Chief Ministers Mamata Banerjee, and MK Stalin would be sent to jail in case the BJP-led NDA comes to power after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

“They will send opposition leaders to jail and will finish them (Nipta denge) …Our ministers, Hemant Soren (former Jharkhand CM), ministers of Mamata Banerjee’s party (Trinamool Congress) are in jail…If they (BJP) win again, then Mamata Banerjee, MK Stalin, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Uddhav Thackeray (UBT Chief) and other opposition leaders will all be in jail…,” Kejriwal said while addressing a joint press conference.

“…No other party has been harassed to this extent in 75 years. The Prime Minister is saying that he is fighting corruption but all the thieves are in his party,” he claimed.

Delhi CM said that PM Modi would be better advised to take lessons from him to fight corruption.

“I want to say to PM Modi that If you want to fight corruption then learn from Kejriwal…After the formation of the government in Delhi, I dismissed one of my ministers and sent him to jail. In Punjab, we sent a minister to jail,” he said.

Claiming that every opposition leader will be arrested under the Mission, ‘One Nation, One Leader, Kejriwal said, “You include all the thieves in your party and send Kejriwal to jail, this is not a fight against corruption… By arresting Kejriwal, they have given the message that if Kejriwal is arrested then they will arrest anyone. The name of this mission is ‘One Nation One Leader…,” Kejriwal added.

The AAP national convenor claimed that PM Modi is making way for Home Minister Amit Shah, alleging they will leave Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath out in the cold after the general elections.

“…These people ask the INDIA alliance who will be their Prime Minister. I ask BJP who will be your Prime Minister? PM Modi is turning 75, on 17th September. He made a rule that leaders in the party would retire after 75 years…LK Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, Sumitra Mahajan, and Yashwant Sinha were retired and now PM Modi is going to retire on 17th September…,” CM Kejriwal added.

“If their government is formed, they will first dispose of Yogi Adityanath and then make Amit Shah the Prime Minister of the country. PM Modi is asking for votes for Amit Shah. Will Amit Shah fulfil Modi’s guarantee?…,” He added.

He also said that the BJP is brushing aside the politics (career) of its veteran leaders like LK Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi.

“Politics of LK Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, former BJP Chief Ministers, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Vasundhara Raje, ML Khattar, and Raman Singh have been finished. The next is Yogi Adityanath. If they win this election, they will change the CM of Uttar Pradesh within 2 months,” the AAP national convenor said.

The Supreme Court on Friday gave interim bail to the Aam Admi Party convenor till June 1. However, as per the terms of his bail, the Delhi Chief Minister cannot make any comment about his role in the Delhi liquor scam case. (ANI)

Jharkhand Voter Turnout

Guntur LS Seat, Holder TDP Faces Keen Contest From Ruling YSRCP

The Guntur Lok Sabha constituency, which is going to polls in the fifth phase on MAY 13, comprises seven Vidhan Sabha or assembly segments.

Arguably the most prominent among all the 24 Lok Sabha segments in Andhra Pradesh, Guntur is currently represented in the Lok Sabha by Jayadev Galla of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP).

The TDP leader secured a marginal victory in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, bagging 5,87,918 votes, against 5,83,713 secured by Modugula Venugopala Reddy, his nearest candidate from the Yuvajana Shramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP).

The TDP candidate scraped home by just 4205 votes.

For the ongoing elections to the 18th Lok Sabha, TDP’s Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar has filed his nomination from the prestigious Guntur constituency. He is pitted against BSP’s Tenali Prakash, the NCP’s Syed. Saida, NP’s Emani. Chandrasekhar Rao, PPI’s Ambatichalamaiah, YSRCP’s Kilari Venkata Rosaiah, TRSP’s Pathan Khaja (basha), TD’s Dr. Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, JBP’s Samudrala Chinna Kotaiah, JJSP’s Sikhakolli Hema Gowri Shankar, and JSS’s Umar Bhasha Shaik.

The Congress had a hold over Guntur since it came to be recognised as a separate Lok Sabha constituency in 1952. However, as the decades rolled and the political sands shifted, the political influence of the TDP and the ruling YSRCP in the region grew.

Significantly, the TDP, which currently holds Guntur, has replaced sitting MP Galla with Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, who is also the wealthiest candidate in the state.

YSRCP’s Kilari Venkata Rosaiah, the incumbent MLA from the Ponnur assembly constituency and the son-in-law of former Union minister Ummareddy Venkateswarlu, is standing against TDP Chandra Sekhar in the battle for Guntur.

Rosaiah’s political career started with his joining the Praja Rajyam Party led by superstar Chiranjeevi. He later shifted to the YSRCP and recorded a handsome win from Ponnur in the 2019 general elections against five-time TDP MLA Dhulipalla Narendra.

Notably, the Assembly and Lok Sabha elections in Andhra Pradesh will be held simultaneously on May 13.

In the 2019 assembly elections, the YSRCP secured a thumping majority in Andhra with 151 seats, while the TDP’s tally was reduced to just 23 seats.

In the Lok Sabha elections the same year, the YSRCP raked in the lion’s share of the poll sweepstakes, winning 22 seats, while the TDP could only bag three seats. (ANI)

Food Inflation (I) – Grains of Truth

They are contrasting tales of food inflation in the two Asian countries hosting more than 1.4bn people each and between them having more than a third of the global population of close to 8.1bn. Notwithstanding their impressive economic progress in the past two and a half decades, both China and India still have significant numbers of people living below the poverty line (BPL).

China has to its credit moving 700m poor rural people out of poverty. Even then the country has over 50m people under the national poverty line of RMB 2,300 ($317.88) annual net income per capita for rural residency. All these are confirmed by UNDP findings. As for India, the Hindu nationalist BJP led government claims that it has in the last ten years lifted 600m people out of poverty. A claim though contested by the opposition and many economists. Whatever that is, India remains home to millions of BPL people and it has large pockets of poverty, particularly in rural areas.

This being the situation, the authorities both in China and India are acutely aware that shortages of food and their high prices are sure to fuel popular discontent to the extent of threatening government stability, says agriculture expert Om Prakash Dhanuka. In India, agriculture and allied sectors being provider of employment to nearly 55% of the total national workforce the government there comes under constant pressure to ensure remunerative prices for farm produce. Not only the poor but also the middle class are smarting under high overall inflation in which the contribution of food (all items without exception) was maximum. (In stark contrast to China, India has experienced double digit inflation in food.)

The Indian central bank’s attempt to rein in prices by pegging interest rate high has not worked effectively because of supply side issues. Below normal rains during last year’s peak monsoon season from June to September and occurrences of floods and extreme dryness in different parts of the country affected production of rice, vegetables and sugarcane and this has had a major impact on consumer price index, says Dhanuka.

Take onion, an essential item in common man’s diet. Following production collapse of onion in India to an expected 25.47m tonnes in 2023-24 from 30.22m tonnes in 2022-23 and 31.69m tonnes in 2021-22, prices went through the roof causing popular unrest. In response, New Delhi first started charging an export duty of 40%, then put a ban on exports up to March end, which has been extended till further orders. But considering politically sensitive Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and UAE are perennially dependent on supplies of onion from India, a caveat is there in the order that exports will be granted on requests from importing countries.

Of far greater consequence for world trade in agri-commodities, is India’s decision in July last to stop exports of non-basmati white rice as a domestic counter-inflationary measure. Being the world’s second largest producer of the cereal after China and by far the most dominant exporter – Indian shipments are two and a half times more than that of Thailand, the next in the league of exporters – such an action by India, no doubt prompted by consideration to contain local cost of living, caused world rice prices to climb to their highest levels at one point in 15 years, according to UN Food & Agriculture Organisation (FAO).

India’s trade action, though not totally unexpected has put importing countries in south and south-east Asia and sub-Saharan countries in a bind. This is because drying up of Indian white rice exports coincided with fall in export surpluses of other major Asian suppliers such as Thailand, Vietnam, Pakistan and Myanmar, all having suffered the impact of occurrence of El Nino and climate change for the worse.

ALSO READ: Can Rice Export Ban Bring Down Inflation?

According to official sources, Indian rice production is likely to fall for the first time in eight years in 2023-24 crop year ending June to 123.8m tonnes from the year before 135.76m tonnes. As a shield against shortages in a season leading to price spikes, New Delhi has remained steadfast in maintaining buffer stock of rice and wheat, procured by government agencies in step with progress of harvests. Supplies to the market are made from such stocks when prices rise and these also support the extensive public distribution system of food.

India has two rice crops – summer, the big one and winter. What naturally follows is focus of official procurement on summer rice harvest. Official sources say, rice procurement this time was 44.15m tonnes as of March 5, against 47.55m tonnes previous year or 7% lower. Since the current season rice procurement is already more than 40% of output, more government buying is not in order as it may lead to shortages in the open market. As for wheat, the procurement target is 31m tonnes. Under India’s PDS around 67% of people are given wheat, rice, sugar and kerosene at highly subsidized rates. Furthermore, at the intervention of prime minister Narendra Modi, the country also runs a massive free foodgrains programme. Because of all this, any surplus for exports has shrunk in a difficult crop year.

Trade officials have, however, started seeing light at tunnel end following weatherman announcement that in the forthcoming peak monsoon season, India will experience “above normal precipitation” to be caused by likely smooth transition from El Nino to La Nina condition. Will the disappointment with rice production now extend to wheat in the current agriculture year?  As for wheat production, the assessment of agriculture ministry and private agencies do not converge, points out Dhanuka.

The official target is 114m tonnes against 2022-23 production of 110.55m tonnes. But an S&P Global Commodity Insights survey of 13 analysts and traders points to lower output year on year in a range of 107m and 108m tonnes. The slight setback will be due to fall in yields though acreage remained steady. Poor monsoon precipitation in wheat growing regions left poor soil moisture and the problem was compounded by insufficient winter rains that are crucial for crop growth and productivity.

Trade officials say even while wheat production will like last year be lower than the official target, New Delhi is expected to be aggressive in procurement of because of the expanded food relief programme. The expected high levels of government procurement can only lead to supply tightness in the wholesale market to the concern of trade. Will New Delhi in this situation respond positively to the trade asking for a cut in import duty on wheat, now at 40%?

We Have To Save Country From Dictatorship: Kejriwal

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday appealed to the public to unite against “dictatorship” and said that he is fighting “with everything that he has.”

“Our country is more than 4,000 years old. But whenever anyone tried to impose dictatorship on this country, people never tolerated it. Today the country is passing through a period of dictatorship. I am fighting against it,” he said while addressing his supporters.

Kejriwal addressed the supporters enroute to his official residence on Friday after he was released from Tihar Jail.

The Chief Minister also announced a press conference to be held tomorrow at the Aam Aadmi Party office in Delhi.

“I want to thank all of you. Crores and crores of people across the country prayed for me. I want to thank the Supreme Court because of whom I’m standing here with you. I just have one request to make with all of you we should together save the country from dictatorship. I’m fighting and protesting against dictatorship with everything I have. But the 140 crore people have to fight against dictatorship,” Kejriwal said while addressing the supporters on Friday.

“We will meet tomorrow morning at Connaught Place. We will meet around 11 am at the Hanuman Mandir. We will go and seek Hanumanji’s blessings. And press conference will be held tomorrow at 1 pm at the party office. In the evening, I will participate in a roadshow in South Delhi. I once again thank all of you,” he added.

Kejriwal’s wife Sunita Kejriwal, Punjab Chief Minister and AAP leader Bhagwant Mann, party leaders Atishi, and Saurabh Bhardwaj, and AAP general secretary Sandeep Pathak accompanied Kejriwal to his official residence from Tihar jail.

Kejriwal was released from jail after spending over 50 days following his arrest by the Directorate of Enforcement on March 21, 2024, in connection with the Delhi excise policy case.

Kejriwal has been granted interim bail till June 1 with conditions that he shall not visit the Office of the Chief Minister or the Delhi Secretariat.

As per the court order, the Delhi CM shall furnish bail bonds in the sum of Rs 50,000 with one surety of the like amount to the satisfaction of the Jail Superintendent. Also, he shall not visit the Office of the Chief Minister and the Delhi Secretariat.

While granting Kejriwal interim bail, the apex court said he would not interact with any of the witnesses or have access to any official files connected with the case. He will not “make any comment with regard to his role” in the present case, the bench ordered.

The bench also made it clear that the grant of interim bail will not be treated as an expression of opinion on the merits of the case or the criminal appeal which is pending consideration before it.

Earlier in April this year, AAP MP Sanjay Singh was released on bail from Tihar jail following the top court’s order. Singh was released after spending over six months in jail in connection with the excise policy case.

The AAP supremo is likely to participate in the election campaigns of the party in the run-up to the general elections in Delhi scheduled to be held on May 25. (ANI)

Delhi Court Frames Sexual Harassment Charges Against Brij Bhushan

The Rouse Avenue Court on Friday ordered the ‘framing of charges’ on sexual harassment allegations levelled by several women wrestlers against former WFI Chief and BJP leader Brij Bhushan Singh and one other accused.

The Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Priyanka Rajpoot while passing the order said there is sufficient material against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh to proceed with the sexual harassment of five women wrestlers and with the offence of outraging the modesty of women.

The court found sufficient material to proceed against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh under sections 354 and 354 A (IPC). Charges have also been framed against him under section 506 (part 1) on the allegations of two women. However, the court discharged Brij Bhushan from the allegations made by the sixth wrestler, said the court.

The court also framed charges against the second accused Vinod Tomar under section 506 (part 1) of the IPC on the allegation of one woman and discharged him with the rest allegations made against him. The court has now listed the matter for official framing of charges on May 21.

Recently the same court had dismissed an application moved by BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, seeking further investigation and placing of a Call Detail Record of a coach. Brij Bhushan had sought a direction to place on record the CDR of coach Vijender concerning an alleged incident at the WFI office in New Delhi.

Singh claimed that he was not in Delhi on the said date. He was in Serbia on September 7, 2022.

The Delhi Police chargesheet filed against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and Vinod Tomar stated that both the accused are chargesheeted for trial ‘without arrest’ as they have complied with the directions u/s 41A CrPC by joining the investigation.

The chargesheet further stated that based on the investigation so far, Brij Bhushan Singh was “liable to be prosecuted and punished for offences” of sexual harassment, molestation and stalking.

A 1599-page chargesheet in the case, having statements of 44 witnesses and six statements was recorded under CrPC 164.

Delhi Police in the chargesheet also submitted several pictures including the picture clicked during the events.

Delhi Police chargesheet stated that based on the “investigation so far,” of the complaints by six top wrestlers, Singh was “liable to be prosecuted and punished for offences” of sexual harassment, molestation and stalking.

The chargesheet stated that witnesses in the matter have mentioned that they also saw the physically wrong gesture of the then WFI president.

Delhi police had filed a chargesheet against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and Vinod Tomar on June 15, last year.

This case was lodged on a complaint lodged by women wrestlers.

In the wrestlers’ matter, two FIRs were registered against Brij Bhushan Singh based on the wrestlers’ complaints.

One was registered under the POCSO Act and a cancellation report has been filed in the case of a minor wrestler. The second FIR was filed on the complaint of several wrestlers.

In both matters, Delhi Police officials had said that in the FIR registered by the wrestlers, after completion of investigation, we are filing a chargesheet for the offences under sections 354, 354A, 354D IPC against accused Brijbhushan Sharan Singh and for offences under sections109/ 354/354A/506 IPC against accused Vinod Tomar before the Rouse Avenue Court, said Suman Nalwa, PRO, Delhi Police.
