Muslim Under Representation in Elections

Muslim Under Representation in Lok Sabha Elections

The confidence with which the BJP’s top brass in the country led by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi plunged into the electoral fray in 2024, belied its expectations, finally, and many say saved the country from falling further into an abyss of intolerance and majoritarianism.

In spite of a servile media, which throughout the election campaign became the mouthpiece of the ruling party, and which, once the process had ended, predicted more than 400 seats for the BJP, as per Modi’s slogan ‘Ab ki baar 400 paar’ had to eat a humble pie when the real elections results started to come.

To say that BJP had no inkling of the coming fate would also be a mistake. This is evident by the fact that immediately after the first phase of the electoral process PM Modi immediately changed track and resorted to his old way of sowing the seeds of communalism through his speeches, targeting the Muslims in his speeches, crying and even claiming himself to be a demi-god. However, all his pranks fell to the ground, as the election results proved.

Additionally, what is more interesting here would be to analyse the factors, which where responsible for BJP’s defeat, and which in fact will also prove the role played by the Muslims in elections of 2024.

In 2024, 78 Muslim candidates were in the fray, fielded by different political parties, out of them 24 Muslim candidates won the polls or a share of 4.42% in the parliament. In the 2019 elections, 115 Muslim candidates had contested and 26 won last time. That means the current Lok Sabha will have two less Muslim MPs. The only time when the percentage of Muslims MPs in the parliament was near two digits was in 1980 elections, with 49 Muslim MPs securing 9.04% of the MPs representation in the parliament.

There are only 15 Muslim-majority Lok Sabha constituencies, and in further 8 Muslims are in a dominant position, bringing the number of Muslim-influenced constituencies to just 23. In these 15 constituencies, the BJP had nominated Muslim candidates in six (two more than in 2014) and the Congress in nine (three more than in 2014).

This year, the BSP fielded 35 Muslim candidates, the highest among all political parties. The Congress came next, with 19 Muslim candidates, while the TMC had the third highest number of Muslim candidates in the fray this time. The Samajwadi Party (SP) fielded just four Muslim candidates, three contested from UP, while the fourth was been fielded from Andhra

The maximum Muslim candidates contested in UP (22), followed by West Bengal (17), Bihar (seven), Kerala (six) and Madhya Pradesh (four). Assam, among the highest in terms of share of Muslims in the population, had three Muslim candidates, down from four last time.

One reason for an increasing number of Muslim candidates winning in 2024 was the INDIA alliance. In the last elections Muslims generally voted for the Samajwadi Party or the Congress. So, in the 2019 Lok Sabha, the Muslim votes were divided between Congress and the SP, as they contested separately. But this time the SP and the Congress remained together, so we can say that the Muslim votes remained consolidated.

The diminishing number of Muslim legislators could be attributed to the fact that most Opposition parties shied away from giving tickets to Muslim candidates, fearing a polarising contest since the BJP’s advent to power. This accounts for under 5% of the strength of the Lok Sabha, much lower than the overall population of Muslims in India, which stood at 14% in 2011 census.

The reasons for the anti-Muslim consolidation in 2024 can be found in the consecration of the Ram temple and the dominance of the Hindutva narrative in all spheres. At the policy level, there were apprehensions about the Modi government’s moves on the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC): many viewed these as government tools to isolate the community. Additionally, inter-community relations deteriorated further with increasing incidents of lynching occurring with impunity.

However, though one may sound happy that so many Muslim candidates won, but this moment also offers an opportunity to the so-called Muslim religious, political and social leaders and even common Muslims to pause and reflect, whether the BJP’s loss is their victory or not.

Besides going into the more obvious question of BJP’s abhorrence to the Muslims, both as the party’s candidates and electorates, the results should make us think where the Indian Muslims are standing 77 years after the independence.

Have they been successful politically, economically, educationally or socially or have they gone down the ladder, looking for affirmative actions form the successive governments but as a community, not doing enough on their own to achieve success.

Though, by and large Indian Muslims have since 1947 hitched their wagon to the secular parties, yet they have not been able to form a political party of their own with an all-India presence and acceptability. What should be construed as the reason behind this lackadaisical approach? A lack of desire or an inability on their part?

Well, recently a video surfaced on X, showing a leader of Muslim Ulema saying that he does not endorse Indian Muslims’ desire to support a Muslim political leader. In fact it is religious leaders like them who have always betrayed the Muslim community and have always sabotaged any plans by Indian Muslims to rise politically and this results in poor representation of Muslims in the parliament.

Perhaps it is time for the Muslim community to chart out a strategy to float a political party of its own, as they have seen that hitching their wagon to the so-called secular parties has not delivered the desired results for the community. Further to shun the blame of being appeased they need to assert, demand and deliver their own political future.

NEET Exam Row

NEET Exam: Minister Pradhan Assures Students Of Fair Play

Amid the controversy surrounding the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET-Undergraduate), Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Friday assured students that a transparent process will be followed and they should not worry.

Pradhan, earlier today, held a meeting with a few students who appeared for NEET exam, accompanied by their parents. He addressed their concerns and assured them that no injustice would be done to the students.

“The government assures the students that full transparency will be adopted in the probe into alleged irregularities and re-conducting the NEET exams. The students do not need to worry,” Pradhan said while speaking to ANI.

“Students who wanted to meet us today, I called them, their parents also came, I met them. I heard their side and I made them feel better. The government is committed, and all students should have this assurance that a transparent process will be followed. 24 lakh students were the applicants, and 23.30 lakh students have taken the exam, this is natural, whatever doubts come to their minds, some issues came to mind that some irregularities in the centre were noticed, due to lack of time for grace marks, some objections were raised in the formula used for giving grace marks, that was also rectified”, he added.

Pradhan further stated, “The Supreme Court permitted them to take the exam again yesterday, they have been informed. Those who want to take the exam can take the exam there as well”.

However, the education minister on Thursday ruled out the possibility of any irregularities in the NEET-UG examination, stating that there has been “no paper leak” in the NEET-UG paper and government is ready to give answers to the Supreme Court which is hearing the petitions related to the exam.

“I want to assure the students and their parents that the Government of India and NTA are committed to providing justice to them. Twenty-four lakh students have successfully taken the NEET examination. There is no paper leak, no proof has been found yet. A court-recommended model was adopted for around 1560 students and a panel of academicians has been formed for the same…We will accept the verdict of the Court,” he said.

Meanwhile, the National Testing Agency (NTA) told the Supreme Court on Thursday that the scorecards of 1563 candidates who got “grace marks” in the 2024 National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (undergraduate) exam will be cancelled and the candidates will have a chance to reappear for the exam.

The NTA told a bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta that a committee has been constituted to review the results of over 1,563 candidates who were awarded “grace marks” to compensate for the loss of time suffered while appearing for NEET-UG.

“The Committee has decided to cancel the scorecards of 1563 NEET-UG 2024 candidates who were given grace marks and these students will be given the option to take a re-test,” NTA said.”

The exam will be conducted on June 23 and the results will be declared before June 30,” it added.

The Apex Court reiterated that it will not continue the counselling of NEET-UG, 2024.

“Counselling will go on and we will not stop it. If the exam goes, then everything goes in totality, so there is nothing to fear,” said the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court will hear the petitions on July 8

Several petitions were filed in the apex court seeking direction to recall NEET-UG 2024 results and to conduct the examination afresh, alleging paper leakage and malpractices in the test held on May 5.

The May 5 exam, conducted by NTA across 4,750 centres for nearly 24 lakh students, has been put in the docks over allegations relating to paper leaks and questionable grace marks.

An unprecedented 67 students have achieved a perfect score of 720, which has added to the concerns.

Meanwhile, the opposition has also been questioning the central government over the alleged “scam” in conducting the NEET-UG examinations. Several students in different parts of the country also organised protests demanding a probe into the reported irregularities.

Earlier on Thursday, Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge took a swipe at the centre over reported irregularities in the NEET-UG exams.

“Grace marks were not the only problem in NEET exam. There has been rigging, papers have been leaked, and corruption has taken place. The future of 24 lakh students appearing in the NEET examination is at stake due to the actions of the Modi government. A nexus of exam centres and coaching centres has been formed, where the game of ‘pay money, get paper’ is being played”, Kharge wrote in a post on ‘X’.

“The Modi government cannot escape its responsibility by placing the responsibility of its actions on the shoulders of the NTA. The Congress Party demands a fair investigation, under the supervision of the Supreme Court, into the entire NEET scam. After investigation, the culprits should be given the harshest punishment and lakhs of students should be given compensation to save their year from being wasted. In the last 10 years, the Modi government has ruined the future of crores of youth through paper leaks and rigging,” he added.

The NEET-UG examination, conducted by the NTA, paves the way for admission to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH and other related courses in government and private institutions across the country. (ANI)

JDU to support BJP Candidate For Speaker

JD(U) Will Support BJP Candidate For LS Speaker: Tyagi

Janata Dal (United) leader KC Tyagi has said that his party and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) are part of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance and will support the candidate nominated by BJP for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker.

“JDU (Janata Dal-United) and TDP (Telugu Desam Party) are strongly in NDA. We will support the person nominated (for Speaker) by BJP,” Tyagi told ANI.

He was asked about remarks of some opposition leaders that the new Lok Sabha Speaker may be from TDP or JD-U. BJP is leading a coalition government with its allies at the Centre.

Tyagi’s remarks are an indication that BJP is likely to put up its nominee for the Speaker’s post and the candidate may not be from among allies of the party.

The election for the post of Speaker is scheduled for June 26 in the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha.

Asked about the controversy surrounding NEET-UG results, Tyagi said the matter is under the consideration of the Supreme Court. “We refrain from commenting anything on the issue.”

Congress President Mallikarjuna Kharge had alleged that there has been fraud and a “paper leak” in the NEET-UG exam conducted by the National Testing Agency. The Congress has alleged a “scam” and demanded a Supreme Court-monitored probe into the matter. Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan dismissed these allegations and said there is no paper leak and the government is ready to give answers in court.

Speaking about AAP’s allegations on BJP regarding Delhi’s water crisis, Tyagi said, “Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi government should refrain from politicising the issue and sit together to find solutions for the problem. The public is the sole sufferer.”

He said there will be a discussion on the demands of people during the union budget.

“There will be positive discussions in the parliament. The elected MPs will carry forward the expectations, demands and issues of their constituencies,” he said.

The first session of the 18th Lok Sabha will start from June 24. The Rajya Sabha will commence its sittings on June 27. (ANI)

Social Media Influencers

‘Social Media Influencers Will Soon Dominate Political Campaigning’

Atul Kushwaha, an influencer based in Lucknow, feels the role of social media in political campaigns will continue to rise with each passing election. His views:

There are more than 800 million internet users in India and the use of YouTube and Instagram in the country is the highest in the world. This has forced all the political parties to integrate social media and influences in their election strategies. This fact was best publicized a few months back when none other than Prime Minister Narendra Modi invited and interacted with the top influencers at National Creator Awards.

Clearly, the Prime Minister understands the power and popularity of these content generators among young voters of the country. Today, most political leaders are eager to give podcast interviews to these individual influencers because of their reach. Social media platforms are increasingly dominating the public debates.

Probably Mr Modi was one of the first political leaders to understand their importance. Remember in 2023, he met Haryana’s social media fitness sensation Ankit Baiyanpuria and encouraged him to participate in the Shramdaan campaign Swachhta hi Seva. The Prime Minister also shared a video of him in one of his X posts that included tips about physical fitness and wellbeing.

Thanks to the Internet penetrating into the remotest parts of India through mobile phone data, these influencers can boast of a better connect with the masses than a political leader sitting in New Delhi. Social media has not only revolutionized the way political campaigns are conducted but it has become an integral part of electioneering, allowing political parties to connect with voters on a more personal and direct level. This clearly reflects the evolving and increasing role of influencers with each passing election. In future, their role will only rise farther.

Social media influencers not only contribute to the promotion of political parties or ideologies but also shape public opinion at election time. Besides relying on the age-old method of door-to-door campaigning, political parties are now shifting ample focus on influencers as they have the art of reaching out and influencing people in subtle ways.

They know the pulse of their viewers and followers as they get immediate feedback on their contents in the form of ‘likes’, ‘Thumbs-Ups’ or comments. On the basis of such feedback, they tailor their content and forms of communication. Their informal conversations can make an idea go viral from cities to towns to villages. And their numbers and reach are in instant public domain, unlike the viewership ratings of mainstream media. Social media influencers have emerged as one of the most effective mediums in creating buzz on political issues or candidates and even altering the mindset of potential voters.

Another important point is their neutrality. While mainstream media is seen as partisan towards the ruling party of the day, the influencers carry their preferences on their sleeves. That is what has driven many opposition parties towards individual content generators and their channels. Here, the fight is out in the open not shrouded behind the veil of ‘fearless journalism’. And I can safely predict, looking at the current scenario, that these influencers would soon become the most trusted and valued foot soldiers of all political parties.

India Wholesale Inflation Up

India Wholesale Inflation Up By 1.35% Due To Food, Energy Prices

Wholesale inflation in India, based on the Wholesale Price Index rose to 2.61 per cent in May versus 1.26 reported in April, official data from the Commerce Ministry showed on Friday.

Thus, it remained in positive territory for the seventh month after remaining in the negative zone for seven months until October.

The high rate of wholesale inflation in April was primarily due to an increase in prices of food articles and minerals. In the food basket, cereals, paddy, pulses, vegetables, potato, onion, fruits, all spiked.

Also, high in May was was triggered due to an increase in prices of manufacture of food products, crude petroleum and natural gas, mineral oils, and other manufacturing.

Economists often say a little rise in wholesale inflation is good as it typically incentivizes goods manufacturers to produce more.

In April last year, the wholesale inflation went into negative territory. Similarly, in the initial days of COVID-19, in July 2020, the WPI was reported negative.

Overall wholesale inflation was 8.39 per cent in October 2022 and has fallen since then. Notably, the wholesale price index (WPI)–based inflation had been in double digits for 18 months in a row till September 2022.

The government releases index numbers of wholesale prices on a monthly basis on the 14th of every month (or the next working day). The index numbers are compiled with data received from institutional sources and selected manufacturing units across the country.

Meanwhile, India’s retail inflation rate softens marginally in May, continuing its moderation trend, though food prices continue to remain a pain point for the policymakers.

Annual retail inflation in May was at a 12-month low of 4.75 per cent, marginally down from 4.83 per cent in April. The retail inflation or Consumer Price Index, in December last year was 5.7 per cent, and since has been moderating.

The retail inflation in India though is in RBI’s 2-6 per cent comfort level but is above the ideal 4 per cent scenario, and food inflation particularly is a concern.

Barring the recent pauses, the RBI has raised the repo rate by 250 basis points cumulatively to 6.5 per cent since May 2022 in the fight against inflation.

Raising interest rates is a monetary policy instrument that typically helps suppress demand in the economy, thereby helping the inflation rate decline.

As per the minutes of the latest monetary policy meeting released recently, there have been several mentions of uncertainties around inflation.

Going ahead, food price uncertainties would continue to weigh on the inflation outlook, according to the minutes. Pressure in food prices has been interrupting the ongoing disinflation process in India, and posing challenges for the final descent of inflation trajectory to the 4 per cent target, as per minutes of latest RBI’s monetary policy.
