NEET-UG 2024

SC Seeks Correct Answer From IIT-Delhi Experts Of A NEET-UG Question

The Supreme Court on Monday asked the Director of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi to constitute a team of three experts on the subject concerned to form opinion on the correct answer of a question in the NEET-UG 2024.

A bench of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra asked the team to give their opinion by Tuesday 12 noon regarding the correct answer to an MCQ question of the exam for which the National Testing Agency awarded marks for two options.

Some students challenged the decision of the NTA to award marks for two options for the question.

“… In order to resolve the issue as regards the correct answer, we are of the considered view that an expert opinion should be sought from IIT Delhi. We request the Director of IIT Delhi to constitute a team of three experts of the subject concerned. The expert team constituted by the Director is requested to formulate the opinion on the correct option and remit the opinion to the Registrar by 12 noon tomorrow. The Registrar General is requested to communicate the order to the IIT Delhi Director so that expeditious steps for the preparation of the opinion can be taken,” the bench stated in its order.

The petitioners said, as per the instructions issued by the NTA, the students had to follow the latest edition of the NCERT text book. It was told to the bench that option 4 was the correct answer for question no. 19 as per latest edition. As per the old NCERT syllabus, option 2 was the correct option.

The petiitoners said the NTA’s decision to award marks to students who selected option 2 is contrary to the NTA’s own instruction that the latest NCERT version has to be followed.

As the hearing remained inconclusive, the bench said it would continue hearing the arguments tomorrow in the case alleging paper leak and malpractices in the NEET-UG exam.

On Tuesday, the apex court would hear arguments of NTA and Centre.

During the hearing, senior advocate Narender Hooda appearing for petitioners-students told the top court that Bihar police investigation statements say that leak was on May 4 and was prior to the deposit of question papers with respective banks.

To this, the bench observed that the question paper ferried by e-rickshaw is an established fact, but the little nuance is that the picture that was distributed was of the OMR sheet and not the question paper.

As Solicitor General Tushar Mehta read the statements of the accused, CJI observed that the statements of the accused indicate students were gathered to memorise on evening of May 4 and that means leak happened before May 4.

The court has to see if the leak is localised and confined only to Hazaribagh and Patna or whether it is widespread and systemic, said the bench.

Hooda also apprised the bench that Hardayal School Jhajjar, principal went to both the banks (SBI and Canara Bank) and took question papers. “Paper from Canara bank were distributed to the candidates. But SBI paper had to be distributed not Canara bank,” he said.

The bench asked, “How did Jhajjar centre-in-charge go to Canara bank and get the papers at all when SBI paper had to be distributed?”

The apex court was hearing a batch of pleas seeking direction to recall NEET-UG 2024 results and to conduct the examination afresh, alleging paper leakage and malpractices in the test held.

Aspirants had approached the top court and raised the issue of leakage of question paper, awarding compensatory marks and anomaly in question of NEET-UG.

NEET-UG examination, conducted by NTA, is the pathway for admissions into MBBS, BDS and AYUSH and other related courses in government and private institutions across the country.

The NEET-UG, 2024 was held across 4,750 centres on May 5 and around 24 lakh candidates appeared in it. (ANI)

Economic Survey congress

Economic Survey Far From Truth, Ground Reality: Congress

The Congress has slammed the annual Economic Survey presented by the government in parliament on Monday, saying it was far from the truth and the ground reality prevailing in the country.

Addressing a press conference at the AICC headquarters here, the Deputy Leader of the Congress in Lok Sabha and spokesperson Gaurav Gogoi said the survey does not take note of the backbreaking price rise and widespread unemployment prevailing in the country.

Alleging that the survey had used the typical “Modi tricks” of fear and deceit, he said, if the Economic Survey was to be believed, then everything was fine. But it is not like that on the ground, he observed, while referring to the highest levels of unemployment and inflation prevailing in the country.

He said the government had completely failed to control inflation, which was still around 10 percent. He said it may not affect the rich and wealthy, but it has badly hit the poor and middle classes in the country.

Gogoi said, “Take any sector like transport and pointed out how travelling in sleeper or general class on the railways, the most frequent mode of transportation for the poor and middle classes, had become a nightmare.

He said the Modi government had focused all its attention on the AC coaches. Let the government build AC coaches, but it must not be at the cost of the general and the sleeper classes.”

Referring to the massive problem of unemployment prevailing in the country, he pointed out how the desperate unemployed youth were even risking their lives by joining the Russian Army to fight in Ukraine and even working in war torn Israel.

Not just that, he added, people were even trying to emigrate out of the country illegally as they don’t have any jobs here.

Observing that this government only believed in doling out deceptive slogans, Gogoi said that the Congress did not expect anything in the budget. He quoted a former Reserve Bank of India Deputy Governor saying that the industrial sector had been monopolised by 8-10 powerful companies.

The Congress Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha said that the budget will be aimed at providing benefits to people like Adani and Ambani and 8/10 other companies only, while the common people, the unemployed youth and the farmers will just get deceptive, catchy slogans. (ANI)

Displaying Shop Owner’s Name on Kanwar Route Logical

‘Displaying Shop Owner’s Name on Kanwar Route A Logical Step’

Vansh Saini, a Kanwar Yatri from Muzaffarnagar, says if owners display their names on food stalls, it will help pilgrims maintain the sanctity of their Yatra. His views:

Several members of my family and many friends have participated in the Kanwar Yatra, an annual pilgrimage on foot to fetch holy water to Shiva temples of their devotion. This year I too decided to take part in the religious Yatra. When I saw several of my fellow pilgrims creating a sack of things that included water bottles, daily-use items and medicines, I wondered why they were adding to their luggage when everything is available en route.

Upon enquiry, I was told that they wanted to ensure the purity of the things that they use or consume during the Yatra. Using or consuming any prohibited or profane item would mean that the whole purpose of their pilgrimage ruined. Thus, they would prefer sattvik or Vaishnav food, which is vegetarian food cooked without using onion and garlic, and using their own wares as far as possible.

It may sound irrational to some, but for the faithful such a strict regimen is necessary as you are carrying holy water with yourself. To maintain water’s purity, they carrier too must remain sattvik.  After all, Kanwar Yatra is a kind of penance and thus every effort is made to maintain its sanctity.

It is in this light that I wholeheartedly support the UP administration order which stipulated that all food stall owners along the Yatra route must display their names and the food items sold. This way, the pilgrims can ensure that meat items or food with onion-garlic are not cooked on those premises from where they purchase their food items.

ALSO READ: UP Govt Was Super-Efficient In Managing Kanwar Yatra

The Supreme Court stay on the order is very strange. It would have been better if the court had left it to the food stall owners whether to display their names or not.  That way the Yatris would choose to purchase items where the names would be displayed.

The entire commotion that is being created, mainly by political leaders to gain sympathy of minority community. They forget that the order was not incumbent on shopkeepers of a particular community or caste but on everyone. There have been cases where a restaurant is named after a Hindu religious figure but it also sells meat items. If a pilgrim wants to avoid such food during the Yatra, how does it become discriminatory?

When all shops must display their PAN details, registration numbers etc clearly outside their establishments, why not add the name of owners too in the displayed items. After all, aren’t there already provisions that restrict sale of liquor or meat items near religious places?

There have been cases mentioned in social media that several restaurants on busy highways were found to names after Hindu gods and were owned by Muslims. This probably came to light when consumers used QR codes to pay their bills. While there is no legal provision how a person chooses the title of his or her business outlet, one must respect every religion and faith and avoid naming it after the religious figures of a faith that the owner himself does not follow.

As told to Rajat Rai

The Economic Survey for 2023-24

Productive Jobs, Skill Gap, Green Transition, China Conundrum Find Mention In Economic Survey 2023-24

The Economic Survey for 2023-24 tabled in the Parliament on Monday has identified six key policy focus areas for the government to achieve a sustained economic growth.

Those six areas where the government would focus are generating productive employment; skill gap, tapping the full potential of the agriculture sector, easing the compliance requirements and financing bottlenecks confronting MSMEs, managing India’s green transition, and the persistent China challenge.

The structural reforms undertaken by the Government of India since 2014 have put the economy firmly on a growth path, and India is soon set to become the third-largest economy in the world.

In the medium term, the Indian economy can grow at a rate of 7 per cent plus on a sustained basis if the government can build on the structural reforms undertaken over the last decade, the Economic Survey said.

Stressing on generating productive employment, the Survey document asserted productive jobs are vital for growth and inclusion.

India’s workforce is estimated to be nearly 56.5 Crore, of which more than 45 per cent are employed in agriculture, 11.4 per cent in manufacturing, 28.9 per cent in services, and 13.0 per cent in construction

However, to create these many jobs, there is a need to create the conditions for faster growth of productive jobs outside of agriculture, especially in organized manufacturing and services, even while improving productivity in agriculture.

Skill gap challenge:

“Sixty-five per cent of India’s fast-growing population is under 35, and many lack the skills needed by a modern economy,” the survey said citing a 2023 World Bank report.

“Estimates show that about 51.25 per cent of the youth is deemed employable. In other words, about one in two are not yet readily employable, straight out of college. However, it must be noted that the percentage has improved from around 34 per cent to 51.3 per cent in the last decade.”

Tapping the full potential of the agriculture sector:

The Economic Survey document noted the agriculture sector continues to face structural issues that have implications for India’s economic growth, despite its centrality in India’s growth trajectory.

“The foremost concern confronting the sector pertains to sustaining agriculture growth without letting food price inflation rise beyond acceptable limits while incentivising farmers to raise production.”

There is also a need to improve price discovery mechanisms for agriculture products, increase efficiency, reduce disguised unemployment, address the fragmentation of landholding, and increase crop diversification, among a host of other issues, the Survey suggested.

On MSMEs, a critical sector of Indian economy, the Economic Survey noted the sector continues to face extensive regulation and compliance requirements and faces significant bottlenecks with access to affordable and timely funding being one of the core concerns.

“Licensing, Inspection, and Compliance requirements that MSMEs have to deal with, imposed particularly by sub-national governments, hold them back from growing to their potential and being job creators of substance.”

Managing India’s green transition:

The path of green transition in India needs to ensure the consistency of the E-Mobility policy with the required and optimal energy mix between traditional and renewable source; ensure grid stability for E-Mobility to become pervasive; develop or acquire storage technology at affordable costs for the share of renewable energy in power generation to rise.

At COP26 held in 2021, India as a whole committed to an ambitious five-part “Panchamrit” pledge. They included reaching 500 GW of non-fossil electricity capacity, generating half of all energy requirements from renewables, to reducing emissions by 1 billion tonnes by 2030.

India also aims to reduce the emissions intensity of GDP by 45 per cent. Finally, India commits to net-zero emissions by 2070.

Among others, the Economic Survey suggested to recognise and deal with challenges posed by dependence on China for critical minerals, which are crucial raw materials needed for E-Mobility and renewable energy generation.

“Last but not least, India not only has to deal with climate change and undertake energy transition but also deal with the protectionism of the developed countries[p1] ,” the Survey read.

On the Chinese conundrum, it said the domination over the global supply chains

across product categories is a key global concern, especially in the wake of supply disruption

accompanying the war in Ukraine.

China’s near-monopoly over the production and processing of critical and rare earth minerals has already been a cause of global concern, it added.

“Against this background, it may not be the most prudent approach to think that India can take up the slack from China vacating certain spaces in manufacturing. Indeed, recent data cast doubt on whether China is even vacating light manufacturing. The questions that India faces are: (a) Is it possible to plug India into the global supply chain without plugging itself into the China supply chain? and (b) what is the right balance between importing goods and importing capital from China? As countries attempt to reshore and friendshore, India’s policy choices concerning China are exacting.”

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman tabled the Economic Survey 2023-24 in Parliament today. The Economic Survey document, prepared by the Economic Division of the Department of Economic Affairs in the Ministry of Finance and formulated under the supervision of the chief economic adviser, gives insights into the state of the economy and various indicators of 2023-24 (April-March) and some outlook for the current year.

Sitharaman is set to present the Union Budget for 2024-25 in Parliament tomorrow. With this Budget presentation, Sitharaman is set to surpass the record set by former Prime Minister Morarji Desai, who presented five annual budgets and one interim budget between 1959 and 1964 as finance minister. supreme court COVID-19 vaccines side-effects

SC Stays Directive On ID Cards For Food Stalls On Kanwar Yatra Issued By 3 States

In a significant update, the Supreme Court has put a stay on the directive issued by the governments of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Madhya Pradesh, which mandated eateries along the Kanwariya Yatra route to display the owners’ names.

The Court, on Monday, issued notices to these state governments, seeking their response to the petitions challenging this directive and has scheduled the next hearing for July 26.

The Supreme Court emphasised that food sellers should not be compelled to display the names of owners and staff.

Earlier today, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Arun Govil expressed support for the Uttar Pradesh government’s directive, stating that there was nothing wrong with displaying the owners’ names. He argued that consumers have the right to know where their food comes from. In contrast, Samajwadi Party MP Awadhesh Prasad criticised the directive, accusing it of undermining national unity and calling for its repeal.

The directive, which has sparked a political controversy, was also supported by Uttar Pradesh cabinet minister Om Prakash Rajbhar, who clarified that the regulation was initially introduced by the UPA government in 2006.

Rajbhar asserted that the current BJP-led government is merely implementing existing laws, not introducing new ones.

“It was a law made by the UPA government in the year 2006. The BJP and NDA government did not come up with any new law. We are only doing the work they were not able to do,” Rajbhar said.

Meanwhile, reacting to the row over using ‘nameplates’ on food shops on the Kanwar route in UP and Uttarakhand, UP Congress state president Ajay Rai said that if Chirag Paswan and Jayant Chaudhary are against this decision, then they should withdraw their support from the government.

On July 19, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath mandated that food and beverage shops along Kanwar routes should display the name and identity of the operator/owner to maintain the sanctity of the pilgrims’ faith. Similar orders were also issued in Uttrakhand and Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. The Kanwar Yatra has got underway with Monday marking the first Monday of the month of Sawn. (ANI)

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on Monday targeted the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre over the Budget 2024-25 which will be presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharman on Tuesday, alleging that every budget of PM Modi is prepared as per Adani and Ambani’s advice.

He also alleged that this Budget would provide no relief on tax to middle-class people and the poor.

Notably, Union Budget for 2024-25 will be presented in Lok Sabha by Nirmala Sitharaman on July 23

Speaking on expectations from the Budget, Gogoi told ANI, “The budget will be prepared keeping in mind the profits of Adani and Ambani…There will be no relief on tax for middle-class people and the poor…Every budget of PM Modi is prepared as per Adani and Ambani’s advice.”

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi said that it is a moment of pride for the government to present the first budget of the BJP-led NDA government’s third term.

“It is a matter of pride that after 60 years, a government has come to power for the third time and will present the first budget of the third term…I have been giving guarantees to the people of the country and our mission is to bring this to the ground. This budget is important budget for Amrit Kaal. Today’s budget will decide the direction for the next 5 years of our term. This budget will also become a strong foundation of our dream of ‘Viksit Bharat’,” PM Modi said.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman tabled the Economic Survey 2023-2024 in the Lok Sabha earlier on Monday.

The Economic Survey document, prepared by the Economic Division of the Department of Economic Affairs in the Ministry of Finance and formulated under the supervision of the chief economic adviser, will give insights into the state of the economy and various indicators of 2023-24 (April-March) and some outlook for the current year.

The Budget Session of Parliament, which is commencing on Monday, is likely to conclude on August 12. The session will have 16 sittings spread over 22 days.

Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju said that this session will mainly be devoted to the financial business relating to the Union Budget for 2024-25, which will be presented to Lok Sabha on July 23.

With this upcoming budget presentation, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will surpass the record set by former Prime Minister Morarji Desai, who presented five annual budgets and one interim budget between 1959 and 1964 as finance minister.
