Afterwards, I saw that it ran towards field, so I shouted and asked if anyone’s child was missing. Then they said that their daughter is missing. We surrounded it in the field the day before yesterday and when we called the forest department, they asked us for the video. Where do we get the video from? We are repeatedly complaining that we have seen the wolf. By the time we take out the mobile, it disappears,” he said.

Bahraich DM, Monika Rani said that the authorities were having troubl catching the wolf as it was consistently changing its habitat.

“The biggest problem in this campaign is that every time a new village is being selected. The Wolf changes his activity every 5-6 days. The Forest Department is trying its best,” she said.

A local in Thalia village also said that they have shown the footprints of the animal, but the administration is not taking any action.

“They are saying that we are watching through drones. We have made a video but the administration is just sitting,” he said.

Another local alleged that the administration came after 1.5 hours and that there was no system at all to enusre the villagers security.

District Magistrate Monika Rani requested the people to stay indoors and to be alert.

“We have caught 4 wolves; 2 are left. Our team is continuously patrolling; we are trying our best to catch them as soon as possible. I request people to sleep indoors. A 2.5-year-old child has been attacked by a wolf. I request the people here to be alert,” Bahraich DM said.

ED Aam Aadmi Party MLA Amanatullah Khan

ED Detained Amanatullah From His Residence

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday detained Aam Aadmi Party MLA, Amanatullah Khan. The investigative agency earlier today arrived at his residence to conduct a raid.

The matter pertains to irregularities in the Waqf properties. Khan is the Chairman of the Delhi Waqf Board.

As ED officials took the AAP MLA from his home, Amanatullah Khan shouted out to his supporters, “I am innocent.”

Earlier today, AAP MLA’s cousin Minnatullah Khan said that despite investigation by Anti-Corruption Bureau and Central Bureau of Investigation, nothing has been found yet.

He said, “His mother-in-law has been operated on recently, she is a cancer patient. Despite investigation by ACB and CBI, nothing has been found yet…Now ED is investigating.”

In a self-made video, the AAP MLA said that the investigative agency has been continuously harassing him for the past two years.

“It is seven in the morning, and the ED has come to arrest me in the name of a search warrant. My mother-in-law has cancer, and she is currently at my home. I have written to them, and I have also replied to each of their notices. These people have been harassing me continuously for the last two years. Their only aim is to break our party. We are not going to bow down, and we are not going to break,” Khan said.

Targeting the ED, AAP MP Sanjay Singh accused the Enforcement Directorate of conducting the investigation with malice against AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan despite being repeatedly reprimanded by the Supreme Court.

Delhi Minister Saurabh Bhardwaj claimed that the central government is trying to increase the pressure on AAP ahead of the Assembly election in Delhi.

“The whole country is seeing how the agencies are being misused and as the elections come closer, these people will increase this kind of pressure even more,” Bhardwaj said.

Earlier in April this year, the Rouse Avenue Court granted bail to Khan in connection with the Enforcement Directorate’s recent complaint filed against him for alleged non-attendance of the summons in the Delhi Waqf Board money laundering case.

The federal probe agency had alleged that Khan has elevated his role from witness to accused by filing an anticipatory bail plea and running away from the investigation. ED’s lawyer further stated that they were never able to conclude the probe against him because he was not presenting himself before the agency.

A charge sheet has already been filed against four accused persons and one firm. It has been alleged that Rs 100 crore Waqf Properties were given on lease illegally. It is also alleged that 32 contractual employees were appointed in the Delhi Waqf Board during the chairmanship of Khan, who flouted the rules. (ANI)

Shabana Azmi – A Blend of Arth & Fire

Shabana Azmi – A Blend of Arth & Fire

Shabana Azmi has many ‘firsts’, like winning five National Film Awards, three consecutively, and six Filmfare Awards. She may be overtaken someday, but being the ‘last’ may never be challenged.

She is the last to grow up in a commune, where she woke up to the chatter of poetry, play, and music that alternated between theatre, cinema, and Marxism-Leninism. That era in India’s political and cultural life ended long ago.

Imagine, called Munni at home, she was given a formal name only when she entered school. Having grown up thus, she went on to study at a Convent school and Jesuit college, into arthouse cinema and then to the boisterous and commercial Bollywood. The daughter of poet-writer Kaifi Azmi and theatre person Shauqat has imbibed the parents’ qualities and passion in abundance.

Her equally illustrious husband Javed Akhtar, son of poet-writer Jan-Nisar Akhtar, also had a commune childhood. But he embraced Bollywood directly, without flirting with the ‘parallel’ cinema. The extended Azmi-Akhtar clan, with many creative people, can be called the new “first family”.

Of them all, Shabana is arguably the most versatile. She has carved a niche in regional cinema, especially Bengali, and has also gone global, in Hollywood and Britain. She is more like Shashi Kapoor of the original “first family”, the Kapoors. Both have promoted and practised ‘purposeful’ cinema. Only, Shabana’s effort, in and outside of cinema, has a political pitch, of the ‘progressive’. Her cue from her parents was that art should push towards change.

Although filmmaking is a team job, critics at home and abroad have noted that several of her films were cited as a form of progressivism and social reformism which offer a realistic portrayal of Indian society, its customs and traditions.

Emerging from Mumbai’s elite Saint Xavier’s College she had access, if not to Bollywood, then to children of Bollywood families among her fellow students. However, she chose to learn the art at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) and imbibed some Stanislavsky.

In her first release, Shyam Benegal’s Ankur (1975), the role of a married servant slipping into an affair with a student was risky and was rejected by established actors. Of playing an ‘adulteress’, she said in a recent interview: “I loved the grey shades in Lakshmi’s character. All along, I knew something exciting was going on.”

“Once Ankur was released, it was like a whirlwind. It was selected for the Berlin International Film Festival, in 1974. It gave me my first National Award for Best Actress. Ankur’s commercial success paved the way for other arthouse films. Had I not started my career with Ankur, my career would have been on an entirely different trajectory.”

Call it the lure of Bollywood, and why not? Despite this critical and commercial success in cinema shorn of formula, Shabana also partnered with Amar’s character in Manmohan Desai’s Amar, Akbar Anthony, a typical Bollywood affair. She did not get typecast.

Not ‘beautiful’ in the way Bollywood seeks its heroines, Shabana has a distinct desi charm and poise that convince the viewers. She counsels the newcomers today not try to look glamorous. The face matters.

Besides Benegal and Mannohan Desai, she reached out to Bengal’s Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen and Goutam Ghose who were then accused of “selling India’s poverty” at foreign film festivals. Over the years, straddling Bollywood and Bengal, she did roles immortalized in many Sharatchandra novels, playing the sensitive Bengali with aplomb.

Ray took a while taking her in Shatranj Ke Khiladi (1977) after having spotted her in Ankur: “Shabana Azmi does not immediately fit into her rustic surroundings, but her poise and her personality are never in doubt, and in two high-pitched scenes she pulls out all her stops and firmly establishes herself as one of our finest dramatic actresses.”

Shabana emulated her mother who would dress and act at home to practice her role in a play. A Bombay girl, she has worked hard to depict real-life characters, be it in slums or the countryside, studying and even joining their milieu to achieve a degree of authenticity. In Mandi (1983), to portray the madam of a whorehouse, she put on weight and chewed betel. Real-life portrayals continued in many films. She was Jamini resigned to her destiny in Mrinal Sen’s Khandhar (1984) and a typical urban Indian wife who fought back marital betrayal in Arth (1982) and a mother and homemaker in Masoom (1983).

In Godmother (1999) that brought her the record-setting fifth National Award, however, her accent as a gangster from Gujarat lacked authenticity. Compare her with Supriya Pathak in an identical role in Goliyon Ki Raas Leela Ram Leela (2013) and you see the difference.

The personal gets emotionally enmeshed with the professional. This writer’s favourite is her role as the mother of Neerja (2016), having witnessed events that followed the 1986 terror attack on a PAN-AM flight and the turmoil in the family of senior colleague Harish Bhanot.

Air hostess Neerja Bhanot, killed by the terrorists won everyone’s admiration and sympathy. But an anguished mother Rama Bhanot’s oration at her daughter’s condolence meeting, as she struggled to spread calm, brought tears. “It was very difficult to play her, particularly the last scene where Rama addresses an audience,” Shabana, who won the Best Supporting Actress Award, said.

The arthouse or parallel cinema is now part of our heritage. Having transitioned after playing many powerful women roles, she explains why not many left a lasting impact. The problem lies elsewhere, in the way cinema is made and watched. “If you want change in cinema, it has to come from mainstream cinema. Otherwise, you are preaching to those already converted.”

Selecting roles can be risky. Deepa Mehta’s Fire (1996) depicts Shabana as a lonely woman in love with her sister-in-law. The on-screen depiction of lesbianism (perhaps the first in Indian cinema) drew severe protests and threats from many social groups as well as by the Indian authorities. Portraying the exploited can be exploitative. “Initially, I had my reservations,” she admits. Then she consulted her husband, Javed, who counselled: “If you believe that the film is not exploitative and you would enjoy doing it, then do it.”

Individually and together, the couple have taken up public causes. As lawmakers, they have been more vocal than most from the tinsel town. Javed rallied the Mumbai citizenry after the 2008 terror attacks.

Along with theatre and poetry reading, Shabana has participated in public campaigns against communalism, victims of natural disasters, Kashmiri Pandits, and AIDS victims. She lost in a Lok Sabha election and has campaigned for Left-leaning candidates.

In the present times, social media and not socialism, commerce and not communalism, reign supreme. Septuagenarian Shabana was recently in the news for her peck, in a film, on the cheek of an octogenarian Dharmendra!

Heavy rain Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh

Severe Rain Causes Flooding In Vijayawada; IMD Issues 5-Day Warning

Heavy rainfall on Sunday led to severe flooding in the Rama Krishna Puram area of Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh, submerging houses and cars.

Police and NDRF teams have initiated rescue and relief operations, relocating affected residents to rehabilitation centres.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also issued a weather warning for the next five days.

IMD forecasted heavy rainfall accompanied with thunderstorms and lightening for Sunday.

For the following four days, isolated places in North Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam are expected to experience thunderstorms with lightning.

On Saturday, a house in Mogalrajapuram collapsed due to a rock falling from a hill, resulting in the death of a woman. Two other women were hospitalized and their condition was said to be stable.

According to the officials, the house collapsed after a rock fell from the top of the hill amid heavy rainfall.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu held a review meeting on Saturday, instructing officials to remain vigilant and alert in rain-affected areas.

He also directed the declaration of school holidays in regions experiencing heavy rainfall, the installation of warning boards near overflowing streams and rivers, and the issuance of alert messages to mobile phones.

Naidu warned of potential hazards, including falling power lines and trees due to strong winds and rain.

Parts of Vijayawada and Warangal in Telangana were affected by rain on Saturday, leading to waterlogging in several areas. (ANI)

Assam Trinamool Congress President Ripun Bora

Assam TMC Prez Ripun Bora Resigns

Assam Trinamool Congress President Ripun Bora on Sunday resigned from the party, citing perception of people of the state of TMC being a regional party.

“I thought that from the platform of TMC, we could intensify our fight against the BJP in Assam… But subsequently, I experienced that the people of Assam are not inclined to accept TMC in Assam. The people of Assam view TMC as a regional party of Bengal… No doubt people have very deep respect for Mamata Banerjee. But the people of Assam do not want to accept the TMC. That is why I have decided if the people do not accept it, then how we can intensify the fight against the BJP through TMC… I decided that if I continue in TMC only I will get no result. It is a waste of my time and energy,” Bora said while speaking to ANI.

He further highlighted measures that could be taken by the party, such as need for an Assamese leader at the national level, declaring the residence of Bharat Ratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika at Tollygunge as a heritage site and converting the Madhupur Satra at Cooch Behar into a cultural hub to counter the perception of the people of TMC being a regional party.

“…Assam TMC has great potential but several recurring issues have hindered our progress, including the perception of TMC as a regional party of West Bengal. To counter this perception, we made several suggestions, such as the need for an Assamese leader at the national level, declaring the residence of Bharat Ratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika at Tollygunge as a heritage site and converting the Madhupur Satra at Cooch Behar into a cultural hub,” he wrote in a letter to TMC National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee.

He revealed that he made numerous attempts to sit down with the TMC’s National General Secretary, Abhishek Banerjee, and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to address pressing concerns, but his efforts were met with silence. This lack of engagement is also a reason for his decision to resign from the party.

“Despite my repeated attempts over the past year and a half to secure an appointment with you and our Chief Minister Mamata Didi to address these concerns, I have been unsuccessful,” he added.

He stated that the people of Assam are not ready to accept a party from the other state and view TMC as a regional party of West Bengal.

“It has been my honour to serve as the State President of Assam TMC for over two years. I have interacted extensively with people across the state. Unfortunately, the issues mentioned above have led many people in Assam to continue viewing TMC as a regional party of West Bengal. The people of Assam are not willing to accept a party that they perceive as being from another state. In light of these challenges and the lack of an adequate resolution, I feel compelled to make a difficult decision and have decided to dissociate myself from TMC,” he wrote in the letter. (ANI)

Mohanlal on Malayalam Cinema

There Is No ‘Powergroup’ In Malayalam Cinema: Mohanlal

Veteran actor Mammootty on Sunday shared his thoughts on the ongoing controversy in the Malayalam film industry following the sexual harassment allegation made by actresses and also reacted to the Justice Hema Committee report that was recently made public.

In a post on Facebook, Mammootty penned a long note that read, “This post is based on the current developments that Malayalam cinema is facing. The organizational method is that the organisation and leadership of the actors react first. Waited this much because I believe that I should give my opinion as a member only after such professional responses. Cinema is the epitome of society. All the good and bad in society is in the movie. The film industry is something that society pays close attention to. Therefore, all the small and big things that happen there will be a big discussion. In order to prevent anything unpleasant from happening, filmmakers need to be careful and vigilant so that nothing untoward happens in this sector.”

Praising the initiative of the Hema Committee, he stated, “The Justice Hema Committee was formed by the government to study the film industry and prepare a report to suggest solutions and recommend measures after something happened that should never have happened. We wholeheartedly welcome and support the recommendations and solutions outlined in that report. It is high time that all associations in the film industry join hands without distinction to implement them. The police investigation is proceeding vigorously on the complaints that have been raised. The full version of the Justice Hema committee report is before the court. There is no ‘powergroup’ in cinema. Cinema is not an arena where such things can exist. Justice Hema requested that the practical recommendations of the committee report should be implemented and necessary legislation should be enacted if there are legal obstacles. Ultimately the film must survive.”

Earlier this month, a redacted version of the Justice Hema Committee report on harassment faced by women in the Malayalam cinema industry was made public. It contains shocking accounts alleging harassment, exploitation, and ill-treatment of women professionals.

The 235-page report, published after redacting the names of witnesses and the accused, notes that the Malayalam film industry is controlled by about 10 to 15 male producers, directors, and actors who dominate and exert control over the industry.

The report of the three-member panel headed by a former judge of the Kerala High Court and set up by the state government in 2017, was submitted to the Pinrayi Vijyan-led Kerala government in December 2019 and made public only this month.

Kerala government on Sunday said that it has decided to form a special investigation team, led by a senior police officer, to investigate allegations of sexual abuse in the Malayalam film industry.

“In light of recent interviews and statements from several women in the Malayalam film industry detailing the hardships they have faced, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan convened a meeting with senior police officials here on Sunday,” said an official release from the Chief Minister’s Office. (ANI)

Wayanad tourism Rahul

Rahul Suggests Tourism In Wayanad To Revitalise The Region

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi discussed the relief efforts for the landslide in Wayanad and the need to revitalise tourism in the area, during a conversation with local Congress leaders on Sunday.

“Wayanad is steadily recovering from the devastation caused by the tragic landslides. While there is still much to be done, it is heartening to witness people from all communities and organisations coming together in relief efforts.” LoP Rahul Gandhi said in a post on X.

During the conversation, he mentioned the need to revitalise tourism in the area to aid the people of Wayanad. “There is one crucial aspect I wish to highlight that will greatly aid the people of Wayanad–tourism. Once the rains cease, it is imperative that we make a concerted effort to revitalise tourism in the area and encourage people to visit.”, the post read.

He further highlighted that the landslide was localised to a specific area and not the entire region, but the perception of people outside is that the whole area is dangerous. Also saying that Wayanad remains a stunning destination, it will soon be ready to welcome tourists across India, “It is important to note that the landslide was localised to a specific area in Wayanad, not the entire region. Wayanad remains a stunning destination and will soon be ready to welcome tourists from across India and the world with all its natural charm.”, the post added.

The Congress leader also emphasised other areas regarding relief efforts that need focus, including poor interdepartmental coordination, inadequate compensation, and the loss of livelihood, among other things.

“As far as I know, there are four or five things which we need to put pressure on. One is poor interdepartmental coordination in relief and rehabilitation, second is inadequate compensation, third is the rent issue that I raised, then many people have lost livelihoods, including vehicles and plantations, and finally the impact of tourism,” he said during the conversation.

The landslides that killed hundreds of people in Kerala’s Wayanad were triggered by a burst of rainfall that was made about 10 per cent heavier by human-caused climate change, a study by World Weather Attribution (WWA) has found. (ANI)
