Sharad Hints At Bigger Role For State Prez Jayant Patil

Sharad Hints At Bigger Role For State Prez Jayant Patil

Amid Maha Vikas Aghadi’s Chief Minister face talks for upcoming assembly election, Sharad Pawar, the chief of the Nationalist Congress Party (SCP), has hinted at a more significant role for Jayant Patil, the Maharashtra NCP-SCP president, in shaping the state’s future.

Pawar emphasized that the journey to rebuild a progressive and developed Maharashtra will start from Islampur in Sangli and Jayant Patil should take the responsibility on his shoulders and the party and all his colleague will back him.

This statement hinted that Patil can play a crucial part in upcoming election period.

While addressing a public rally in Islampur assembly constituency in Sangli district of Maharashtra on Wednesday, Sharad Pawar said, “The bad picture of the Maharashtra needs to be changed. We want a different Maharashtra. If I say different Maharashtra that means like of the vision of first Chief Minister Yashwantrao Chavan and to make such, many have made sacrifices like Vasant Naik, Rajaram bapu etc. They all wanted a powerful and strong progressive state. But the people who are in power currently do not even think in the interest of Maharashtra.”

He also pointed out that situation is such today that the state is trailing at a low level in all sectors.

“Once upon a time Maharashtra was on the top of all state in the country, therefore we have to take this job in our hand to shape, rebuild and make the state progressive again,” he said.

“In upcoming election, we have to take this job in our hand and I am happy that this is starting from here in Islampur Sangli. I am happy that Jayant Patil is going in all corners of the state. He is meeting people, giving them confidence and informing about our ideology. I am sure the youth of the state will stand strongly with him and the dreams which we have about Maharashtra will be fulfilled. You, me and all Maharashtra people expect that he should take this responsibility on his shoulder. We need to back him strongly,” Sharad Pawar said.

He further assured that he and his party will back Jayant Patil “strongly”.

Assembly elections in Maharashtra will be held in a single phase on November 20, the Election Commission of India announced on Tuesday (October 15, 2024). With this, the political parties have begun gearing up for an election that will be unprecedented in many ways.

In the 2019 Maharashtra Assembly polls, the Congress and unified Shiv Sena had won 154 out of 288 seats as part of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition. However, this time around the Shiv Sena (UBT), Sharad Pawar’s NCP and Congress are in alliance to counter the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance.

In the Lok Sabha election held this year, MVA won 30 of the state’s 48 Lok Sabha seats. The ruling alliance won 17. One seat went to an Independent candidate. (ANI)

India Hits New Low In Gloomy Bengaluru Test Opener vs NZ

The Indian team hit rock bottom in Bengaluru’s overcast condtions on Day 2 of the opening Test against New Zealand on Thursday.

For the first time in the illustrious history of cricket, India lost four batters for a duck out of the top seven in a home Test.

Virat Kohli (0 of 9), KL Rahul (0 of 6), Sarfaraz Khan (0 of 3) and Ravindra Jadeja (0 of 6) returned to the pavilion without troubling the scorers.

Overall, India had five ducks in their list of batters after Ravichandran Ashwin was sent back for a golden duck on the first ball of the second session.

After India captain Rohit Sharma departed cheaply, the scorching deliveries from New Zealand pacers continued to unsettle Indian, leading to a mouth-watering contest between the bat and the ball.

ORourke silenced the crowd at M Chinnaswamy Stadium by extracting extra bounce from the surface with his bounce, taking Kohli by surprise.

The Indian stalwart tried to defend the ball off his toes but ended up gloving it to Glenn Phillips, who came flying from leg gully to take a stunning catch. This was Kohli’s first duck in 32 innings, with his last coming against the same opposition in 2021 at Wankhede.

Sarfaraz, who got his much-awaited opportunity, slapped the ball with the bottom edge of the bat. Devon Conway sprang to his right at extra cover to complete a screamer of a catch.

KL Rahul came in and was welcomed by ORourke by smashing the ball straight into the Indian’s glove. With Rahul rattled, ORourke came back in his next over to take the rewards for his efforts.

With India itching to score runs, ORourke lured Rahul into making a blunder and tickled the ball down to Blundell’s left. With Rahul becoming the third batter to register a duck for India, Ravindra Jadeja became the fourth to enter the list following a miscued shot.

With five ducks in their bucket, India’s tailend tried to put up a fight, which was to no avial. India eventually folded on 46. (ANI)

AAP Jharkhand Maharashtra Polls

AAP Unlikely To Contest M’rashtra, Jharkhand Polls

Aam Aadmi Party is unlikely to contest Jharkhand and Maharashtra assembly polls as the party wants to focus on Delhi elections rather than creating confusion in the minds of voters in two states that could lead to splitting anti-BJP votes.

According to the sources, the party wants to focus on strengthening INDIA Bloc. However, for organisational expansion, Maharashtra AAP unit wants to go in elections, but a nod from AAP top leadership is unlikely.

The sources further mentioned, “Our focus is Delhi and we don’t want to create further confusion in minds of voters in Maharashtra which could lead to splitting anti-BJP votes.”

On October 11, Aam Aadmi Party’s National General Secretary (Organisation), and Rajya Sabha MP Sandeep Pathak held a key meeting for booth preparations at the party headquarters for the Delhi polls.

The meeting was attended by state-to-booth level office bearers of the party. Sandeep Pathak interacted with the workers.

“AAP is fully prepared for the Assembly polls and emphasised the need to further strengthen the already robust organisation in Delhi and ensure every booth in the state is fortified,” he said.

“As the elections approach, the BJP will once again conspire against the AAP.” He urged everyone not to fall into any of the BJP’s traps and to remain focused solely on their politics of working for Delhiites,” he added.

Assembly polls in Delhi are expected to be held in early 2025.

AAP won 62 out of the 70 seats in the 2020 assembly elections and BJP secured eighth seats.

Earlier, Aam Aadmi Party National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal said that the “biggest lesson” from the Haryana election results is to never be overconfident and urged the party workers to work hard in the run-up to the Delhi assembly polls likely to be held next year.

On October 8, Arvind Kejriwal while addressing AAP municipal councillors in Delhi said “Elections are approaching. Elections should not be taken lightly. The biggest lesson from today’s election is to never be overconfident. Every election, seat is tough.” (ANI)

Nitish Kumar Spurious Liquor Deaths In Siwan Saran

Nitish Conducts High-Level Review After Spurious Liquor Deaths In Siwan, Saran

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday conducted a high-level review after the spurious liquor deaths reported from Siwan and Saran (Chapra). The CM, after the review, directed the Secretary of the Prohibition, Excise and Registration department to go to the spot and gather information about the entire situation and conduct a thorough investigation on all points, a statement from the CMO said.

Meanwhile, the tragedy has turned into a political controversy with the RJD targeting the Nitish Kumar government.

Former Deputy CM Tejaswi Yadav attacked the CM and said that he and his kitchen cabinet were pioneers of immoral and unprincipled politics.

Taking to social media X, Tejaswi Yadav wrote in a post “27 people have been killed due to poisonous liquor under government protection. Dozens have lost their eyesight. There is a so-called liquor ban in Bihar but due to the nexus between ruling party leaders, police, and mafia, liquor is available at every square and intersection.”

Further, he wrote, “So many people died but Chief Minister Nitish Kumar did not even express condolences. Hundreds of Biharis die every day due to poisonous liquor and crime but this is a normal thing for the Chief Minister and his kitchen cabinet, who are pioneers of immoral and unprincipled politics.”

“No matter how many people are killed, how can any senior officer be prosecuted? On the contrary, will they be rewarded? If despite the liquor ban, liquor is available at every square and corner, then is this not the failure of the Home Department and the Chief Minister? Is the Chief Minister sensible? Is the CM capable and competent to take action and think about such incidents? Who is responsible for these murders?” Tejashwi Yadav added.

BJP leader Nitin Nabin said that action would be taken by the state government against all those involved in the incident.

“Action will be taken against all those who were involved in this. If the CM has ordered a liquor ban, he has taken action in such cases as well. This matter has also been taken cognisance of by the CM,” he said. (ANI)

Smartphones Can Be A Double-Edged Sword For Adolescents

Nita Balmohan Rajesh, mother of a 14-year-old daughter and a 12-year-old son, shares why enforcing appropriate boundaries for children while using technology in today’s digital age

Being a mommy to a teenager is so much harder than it was when we were in teens! The recent news of the Attorney Generals of 14 states in the US filing a lawsuit against TikTok for lying about safety provisions and harming teenagers’ mental health versus the ongoing battle that ensues in every household, especially those where the parents do not gift (read allow) an ‘Insta’ account on the 13th birthday!

Social media is a double-edged sword: Not having a footprint in Instagram, Facebook makes a teenager otherwise creative, well-read student pursuing multiple interests such as art, music and dance, but also being called “weirdo” at school! While not always successful, making them understand how harmful unmonitored hours on end watching the screen can be, is the key!

Leading technologists themselves have been reiterating the harmful effects of gaming and screen-time before the child is 16. Add to this the endless reports and publications by leading psychologists that indicate increased anxiety, depression, insomnia, and eating disorders in children who excessively use their mobile phones and/or laptops. Yet, the news of 14- and 15-year-olds committing suicide or throwing unprecedented tantrums over their parents not giving them screen time is beyond depressing!

The worst part is that many parents fall victim to the constant pressure from their kids, even when well aware of the harmful risks. There’s a sense of helplessness – the feeling that their children will be “left out” socially if they are not active on social media.

ALSO READ: ‘Good Parenting Doesn’t Require You To Be A Helicopter Mom’

And monitoring screen time and controlling content that the children are exposed to – that’s nearly impossible because their teenagers often shut them out, refusing to let parents be involved invoking the ‘Do you NOT trust me?’ card. It is a losing battle – setting rules and maintaining discipline for responsible screen-time, with clear ground rules and limits in place. Hopefully mature conversations and reducing the number of hours we ourselves spend on Social media can stop the downward spiral we have tragically seen when children take extreme steps in frustration or despair!

For now, in our household, we have reluctantly agreed up to 20 minutes a day of communicating with their friends via WhatsApp and Discord and a maximum of 2 hours a week of Minecraft, in addition to the two hours of Television / movies a week. The Microsoft weekly screentime report is regarded as important as their progress in school!

Exceeding the two-hour screentime limit – unless extra screen time was allowed for a school project – means reduction of or no screentime in the current week! Our 14-year-old is allowed to swipe mindlessly usingmy Insta account (which in itself is a “boring” deterrent and she graciously declines!) while I am readying myself for the nightmare of a skirmish when the walls come down and she demands an iPhone of her own and installs Insta, TikTok, and whatnot!

rail-cum-road bridge across Ganga traversing through Varanasi and Chandauli districts of Uttar Pradesh

Cabinet Approves Bridge Across Ganga Traversing Varanasi

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved a rail-cum-road bridge across Ganga traversing through Varanasi and Chandauli districts of Uttar Pradesh which will be an engineering marvel with a six-lane highway upper deck and four-line railway lower deck.

Briefing reporters after a meeting of union cabinet, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that Malviya Bridge in Varanasi is one of the most important railway bridges across Ganga River, connecting the northern, eastern and western states and there is need to replace it.

He said the Malviya Bridge is a rail-cum-road bridge (two-line rail and two-lane road), which was constructed 137 years back and the route between Varanasi and DDU Junction is oversaturated (163 per cent). The new rail-road bridge with four railway lines and six-lane highway bridge will be constructed on Ganga river with an investment of Rs 2,642 crore.

“The proposed multi-tracking project will ease operations and reduce congestion, providing the much-required infrastructural development on the busiest sections across Indian Railways,” said Vaishnaw, who is also Union Railways Minister.

Varanasi Railway Station, a crucial hub in Indian Railways, connects key zones and serves as a gateway for pilgrims, tourists and the local population.

An official release said that the Varanasi-Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya (DDU) Junction route, vital for both passenger and freight traffic, faces heavy congestion due to its role in transporting goods like coal, cement, and foodgrains, as well as serving growing tourism and industrial demands.

“To address this issue, infrastructure upgrades are needed, including a new rail-cum-road bridge over the Ganga River and the addition of third and fourth railway lines. These enhancements aim to improve capacity, efficiency and support the region’s socio-economic growth. Apart from relief in congestion in the stretch, 27.83 MTPA freight is anticipated on the proposed stretch,” the release said.

It said the project is in line with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Vision of a New India which will make people of the region “Atmanirbhar” by way of comprehensive development in the area which will enhance their employment and self-employment opportunities.

The project is result of PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan for multi-modal connectivity which has been possible through integrated planning and will provide seamless connectivity for movement of people, goods and services.

The project covering two districts in Uttar Pradesh will increase the existing network of Indian Railways by about 30 km.

The Railways being environment friendly and energy efficient mode of transportation, will help both in achieving climate goals and minimizing logistics cost of the country and lower CO2 emissions (149 crore kg) which is equivalent to plantation of 6 crore trees, the release said. (ANI)
