CBI Files Chargesheet In RG Kar Financial Irregularities Case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday filed a chargesheet in connection with a case of financial irregularities at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Former Principal of RG Kar Dr Sandip Ghosh and four others have been named in the chargesheet, officials said.

According to an official release, the CBI filed the chargesheet on November 29 in the Special Judge, CBI Court, Alipore, against: (1) Dr Sandip Ghosh, the then Principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata; (2) Dr Ashish Kumar Pandey, the then House Staff of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital; (3) Biplab Singha, Proprietor of M/s Maa Tara Traders; (4) Suman Hazra, Proprietor of M/s Hazra Medical; and (5) Afsar Ali Khan, Additional Security and Key person of M/s Eshan Cafe.

“This case was registered in compliance with the directions of the Hon’ble High Court at Calcutta regarding financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata,” the CBI said.

Ghosh was under investigation for alleged corruption and financial irregularities at the college and hospital, following a directive from a single bench of the Calcutta High Court, which ordered the CBI to probe the matter.

Earlier, on August 26, the CBI concluded a second round of polygraph tests on Dr Ghosh as part of their investigation into the rape-murder of a woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The body of the trainee doctor was found in the seminar room of the hospital on August 9, sparking nationwide protests. A civic volunteer, Sanjay Roy, was arrested shortly after.

Meanwhile, Roy, the main accused, has claimed that he was falsely framed in the matter and alleged that former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal had conspired against him.

While being taken from Sealdah Court on November 11 after a hearing, Roy, from the police van, shouted at reporters, stating that the former CP had conspired and framed him. He further claimed that there were other high-ranking officers involved in the case and that he had been threatened by them.

“I am telling you it was Vineet Goyal (former Kolkata Police Commissioner) who conspired the whole thing (rape and murder of RG Kar Medical College resident doctor) and framed me… They had threatened me, and there were other big officers involved,” Roy said. (ANI)

Javelin Thrower Annu Rani Shares Insights On Her Journey, Goals

Indian javelin thrower Annu Rani shared her experiences and future aspirations during an interaction on Friday, reflecting on the challenges and triumphs she has faced throughout her career.

Rani highlighted the unique struggles that women athletes endure, both on and off the field.

“It felt really good because women go through a lot of problems. They face problems in their family as well, so here I felt great to come and share our experience with the new generation on what we struggled in our lives. So, that they get to know that even we came from a humble background. So, it is important for us to inspire them,” she said, emphasizing the importance of using her story to motivate upcoming athletes.

Reflecting on the period following the Paris Olympics, Rani spoke about the emotional highs and lows that athletes often experience.

“After Olympics I feel that a lot of ups and downs come for a player. We work hard and do a lot of sacrifices, staying away from our families for 8, 10, and 12 years. So, there are good and bad performances and we also feel sad as our government puts in so much support. We do not have an option, we cannot leave the sport because of failure. So, we would like to learn from our mistakes and improve from there,” she explained.

Looking ahead, Rani outlined her immediate and long-term goals.

“My immediate target is the World Championship. After that, we have the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games, and then the Olympics will come back again. All these things keep happening in our lives and we will keep trying to achieve our goals,” she stated, underscoring her dedication to continuous improvement and excellence.

Rani also touched on the recent changes in the Commonwealth Games program, which have impacted several sports where Indian athletes traditionally excel.

“A lot of Games from CWG are removed where our Indian players are very strong, but we can’t do much because of their committee and it is their decision. So, we would like to do well and give our 100 percent for the nation,” she said, expressing her resolve to perform at her best despite the changes.

Annu Rani, who holds the national record, delivered a commendable performance in the women’s javelin throw qualification round at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Rani’s throws recorded distances of 55.81m , 53.22m, and 53.55m.Despite her efforts, Rani’s best throw of 55.81m was not sufficient to secure a spot in the final.

Her throws demonstrated skill and consistency, but unfortunately, they did not meet the required mark for progression. Rani’s participation in the Olympics, however, remains a significant achievement, reflecting the growing presence of Indian athletes on the world stage. (ANI)

India Concerned At Extremist Rhetoric In Bangladesh: MEA

Expressing concern over the rise of “extremist rhetoric, increasing incidents of violence and provocation”, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Friday that India has consistently and strongly raised the issue of targeted attacks on Hindus and other minorities with Bangladesh government.

While addressing a weekly media briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal urged Bangladesh’s interim government to take steps for protection of minorities.

On situation of minorities in Bangladesh, Jaiswal said, “India has consistently and strongly raised with the Bangladesh government the threats and targeted attacks on Hindus and other minorities. We made our position very clear as far as the situation of Hindus and minorities in Bangladesh is concerned. The interim government must live up to its responsibility of protecting all minorities. We are concerned about the surge of extremist rhetoric, increasing incidents of violence and provocation. These developments cannot be dismissed only as media exaggerations. We once again call upon Bangladesh to take all steps for the protection of minorities and safeguarding their interests.”

The MEA spokesperson called ISKCON a “globally well-regarded organisation with a strong record of social service. He expressed hope that legal processes will be dealt with in a fair, just and transparent manner.

“We see ISKCON as a globally well-regarded organisation with a strong record of social service. As far as the arrest of Chinmoy Das is concerned, we had made our statement on that and it is our expectation that cases against individuals, as far as they are concerned, these legal processes are underway. We hope and expect that these processes will be dealt with in a fair, just and transparent manner ensuring full respect of their legal rights of these individuals and all those who are concerned,” the MEA spokesperson said.

On the supply of commodities from India to Bangladesh, MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “The supply of commodities from India to Bangladesh continues. And likewise, the trade between Bangladesh and India continues in both directions…”

Hindu Spirtual leader Chinmoy Krishna Das has been charged with sedition for allegedly hoisting a saffron flag above Bangladesh’s national flag in Chittagong on October 25.

Even though ISKCON’s Bangladesh unit has rejected allegations linking the religious organisation to the killing of lawyer in Chattogram, protests continue in the country. The situation has been tense after a lawyer was killed during clashes between police and alleged followers of Das in the Chattogram Court Building area on November 27.

ISKCON had earlier expressed solidarity with Chinmoy Krishna Das. In a post on X, ISKCON, Inc. stated, “ISKCON, Inc. stands with Chinmoy Krishna Das. Our prayers to Lord Krishna for the protection of all these devotees. “Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari was arrested on charges of sedition for allegedly raising a flag on a stand displaying Bangladesh’s national flag.

Chinmoy Krishna Das is currently lodged in a Bangladesh jail after a Chittagong court denied him bail on Tuesday. (ANI)

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) 2000 Rs note

India Q2 GDP Growth Slows Downs To 5.4%, Way Below RBI Estimates

The Indian economy grew by 5.4 per cent in real terms in the July-September quarter of the current financial year 2024-25, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation’s official data showed on Friday. The quarterly growth was quite lower than RBI’s forecast of 7 per cent.

Real GDP in Q2 of 2024-25 is estimated at Rs 44.10 lakh crore, against Rs 41.86 lakh crore in Q2 of 2023-24, showing a moderate growth rate of 5.4 per cent.

Last year same quarter, India grew 8.1 per cent.

Indian economy grew 6.7 per cent in the April-June quarter, lower than RBI’s 7.1 per cent forecast.

The RBI has pegged India’s 2024-25 GDP growth at 7.2 per cent. IMF and World have pegged it at 7.0 per cent. Many global rating agencies and multilateral organizations have also revised their growth forecasts for India upwards.

In its latest monetary policy review meeting in October, RBI pegged Q2 growth forecast at 7.0 per cent; Q3 at 7.4 per cent; and Q4 at 7.4 per cent. Real GDP growth for Q1 of next financial year 2025-26 is projected at 7.3 per cent.

The Economic Survey tabled in Parliament earlier this year “conservatively” projected India’s real GDP growth at 6.5-7 per cent for 2024-25, acknowledging that market expectations are higher. Real GDP growth is the reported economic growth adjusted for inflation.

S&P Global Ratings this Monday retained India’s GDP forecast for the current financial year 2024-25 at 6.8 per cent while cutting economic growth forecasts for the next two years.

The Reserve Bank of India last week said that the weakness witnessed in the Indian economy, particularly in the recent quarter, is behind us.

The slack in speed in the Indian economy observed in the second quarter of 2024-25 (July-September) is behind us as private consumption is back to being the driver of domestic demand with festival spending lighting up real activity in October-December, RBI had said in its latest monthly bulletin.

The RBI asserted that the medium-term outlook remains bullish.

India’s GDP grew by an impressive 8.2 per cent during the financial year 2023-24, continuing to be the fastest-growing major economy. The economy grew by 7.2 per cent in 2022-23 and 8.7 per cent in 2021-22. (ANI)

War Crimes & Genocide

In a moment of symbolic optimism it seems that Benjamin Netanyahu’s goose has been cooked. The latest is a warrant of arrest issued against him, and the 60-day ceasefire in Lebanon.

Anyway, the war was started by Israel with targeted pager attacks against civilians in Beirut and elsewhere, in which pagers subverted by Israeli intelligence would explode suddenly, blowing parts of the body — torso, genitals, limbs, face, eyes, fingers. Besides, around 4,000 Lebanese people have been killed by air strikes. Not able to get the underground fighters of the Hezbollah, the mass murder of civilians seems to be a deliberate military policy of the extreme Right-wing regime in Tel Aviv.

On November 21, 2024, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants against Netanyahu, his former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, and Hamas commander Mohammed Diab Ibrahim al-Masri (Deif). According to Israel, Deif has been killed by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). This report has not been confirmed as yet.

The ICC stated that it had “reasonable grounds to believe that Mr Netanyahu and Mr Gallant bear criminal responsibility for the war crime of starvation as a method of warfare”. It is well known, that apart from the bombs, the snipers, the tanks, and the targeted assassination of mothers and children (including about 190 journalists), the blockade of food and medical aid has been used as a military strategy by Israel. All wars are brutal, but this regime seems to be unsurpassed in its execution of daily brutality.

Unofficial sources have reported that the death toll might be many times higher in Gaza, while the Western media now cites a figure of 44,000, a large number of them women and children who are especially slaughtered so that new generations of Palestinians are not allowed to be born.

The ICC has said that the compulsive blockade of food and aid seems to be the principal charges against Netanyahu and Gallant. As for Dief, he was declared as “responsible for the crimes against humanity, of murder; extermination; torture; and rape and other forms of sexual violence…”

In an opinion piece in Al Jazeera (November 28, 2024), the writer says: “On the positive side, in and of itself, the ICC decision is historic, as for the very first time, it issued warrants for nationals of – politically speaking – a Western country. Intense pressures and threats from Israel, its friends and its protector-in-chief, the United States, did not shield the two principal members of Israel’s war cabinet from becoming fugitives… Of course, the prospect of seeing Netanyahu and Gallant in the dock is quasi nil. For now, those seeking a modicum of justice would find solace in the symbolism the international warrants for the two Israeli leaders carry.”

Significantly, Justin Trudeau has said that he will “abide” by the ICC decision. “We stand up for international law, and we will abide by all the regulations and rulings of the international courts. This is just who we are as Canadians.”

He also said, “We need to see a ceasefire that protects civilians. We need to get back on track towards a two-state solution with a peaceful Israel living alongside a peaceful Palestinian state.”

Besides, the spokesman of British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer , said: “The UK will always comply with its legal obligations as set out by domestic law, and, indeed, international law.”

Other countries that are in agreement with the ICC are France, Belgium, Jordan, Iran, Turkey, Ireland, The Netherlands, South Africa, Sweden, Norway and the European Union. UK and Canada are members of the ‘Five Eyes’, an intelligence network along with New Zealand, Australia, and the US.

The US, not part of the ICC, has reacted in a predictable manner. Joe Biden called the ICC decision “outrageous”. He gave the usual spiel: “Whatever the ICC might imply, there is no equivalence — none — between Israel and Hamas. We will always stand with Israel against threats to its security.”

This is the line he and Kamala Harris have been taking since last year, all the while supplying Israel with billions of dollars, bombs, arms and ammunition, while backing the genocide in Gaza, even while thousands of students and citizens in America protested for months against the killings, calling for a ceasefire.

The ceasefire with Lebanon is more than a breakthrough, though Israel went on a bombing spree in southern Lebanon soon after citing “terrorist activity”. However, there has been no escalation. The point is that why did Israel go for a ceasefire at all?

There could be many reasons. While media reports are more or less absent from inside Israel, or, perhaps, censored, there are reports that since long big cities in the country are surviving in a state of siege. Thousands have gone underground in bunkers, and normal life has been disrupted. Clearly, the emotional and mental state of the people might be on a volatile edge. This especially triggered after Netanyahu opened up another front with Hezbollah and Iran — killing two top commanders of Hamas and Hezbollah in a high security area in Tehran. Iran vowed revenge.

No one knows what is the death toll of IDF soldiers in Gaza and Lebanon, or the damage inflicted by the missiles of Iran and Hezbollah, which have, effectively, broken through the once invincible Iron Dome, a gift by the US to its Nazi ally in the Middle East. Reservists were called in for the new war against Lebanon. Thousands of Israelis have reportedly escaped out of their country — looking for sanity and peace. A huge section is against Netanhayu, who is living on the edge with a serious corruption case hanging over him.

“It’s a whole new kind of world that we’re going into…And we’ll also have to wait and see if the ceasefire holds. I think the Israelis will do everything they can to provoke,” said Karim Makdisi, a professor of international politics at the American University in Beirut. “I think that as long as you have Netanyahu, something is going to happen.” He was quoted by independent media outfit, Drop Site.

In a speech on television, Netanyahu said he backed the ceasefire to rebuild arms and ammunition (now depleted), that he will shift his attention to Iran, and “to separate the fronts and isolate Hamas. From day two of the war, Hamas was counting on Hezbollah to fight by its side. With Hezbollah out of the picture, Hamas is left on its own.”

Meanwhile, Biden said on X: “Over the coming days, the United States will make another push with Turkey, Egypt, Qatar, Israel, and others to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza with the hostages released and an end to the war without Hamas in power.”

Will Gaza see peace in the coming days? It’s doubtful because Netanyahu’s best trump card is an endless genocide, and the liberation of the holy land, so that armed settlers can now occupy large parts of Gaza, as they have done in the West Bank — the two little strips of land left with the Palestinians of their original homeland.

He has shown no intention for the release of hostages, and, reportedly, has been the main obstacle as and when reached some form of reconciliation in Qatar. Indeed, he cares two hoots for the suffering of the hostages, or the suffering of their loved ones and families.

Besides, Hamas wants IDF to totally withdraw from Gaza. This seems highly improbable. And it wants thousands of Palestinian prisoners, including women and children, most of them innocent, now condemned in Israeli prisons, in exchange for the hostages. This too seems improbable, with Israel picking up several young boys and men recently from Gaza, taking them to unknown destinations.

As for Hamas getting isolated after the ceasefire with Lebanon (and Hezbollah), that too seems unlikely. The Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran are linked politically and militarily. And they will always operate strategically, in synthesis.

Hence, as a bitter and freezing winter takes over a ravaged Gaza, new stories of infinite tragedy will unfold. It’s just that there are no journalists or writers from across the world reporting and writing about it.

Sambhal: ‘Maintain Peace, Harmony,’ Says SC As It Orders Not To Open Survey Report

The Supreme Court on Friday asked Uttar Pradesh to ensure “harmony and peace” in Sambhal and directed the trial court there not to proceed in the suit against the Jama Masjid till the petition filed by the Masjid Committee against the survey order is listed in the High Court.

A bench of Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar directed that the report of the advocate commissioner, who conducted the survey of the mosque, should be kept in a sealed cover and should not be opened in the meantime.

“Peace and harmony have to be maintained. We don’t want anything to happen… We have to be absolutely, totally neutral and ensure nothing wrong is done,” said the bench at the outset.

The top court was hearing the plea of the Committee of Management of Jama Masjid in Sambhal against the November 19 order of the local court for the survey of the mosque.

As the matter came for hearing, the bench told senior advocate Huzefa Ahmadi, appearing for the mosque committee, that they had to approach the High Court challenging the order passed by the trial court for the survey instead of directly approaching the Supreme Court.

“We have some reservations against the order, but still you have to approach the appropriate forum,” the apex court told Huzefa.

It suggested that the mosque committee to challenge the order before the High Court as per the procedure and ordered that no further steps shall be taken by the trial court till January 8, 2025.

The bench, however, kept the matter pending before it and posted it for hearing in the week commencing from January 6.

The Committee, in its plea, contended that the report of the survey commissioner be kept in a sealed cover and the status quo be maintained until finality of the present petition.

“Surveys should not be ordered and executed as a matter of course in cases involving disputes over places of worship without hearing all parties and allowing sufficient time to the aggrieved persons to seek judicial remedies against the order of survey,” it stated.

On November 19, the civil judge, senior division, directed the court commissioner to do a survey of the mosque and file the report in the court.

The Masjid Committee moved the apex court directly, citing “extraordinary situation.”.

The petition has been filed under Section 136 of the Constitution, in which the Supreme Court has the power to directly adjudicate any matter.

“It is under these extraordinary circumstances that the Petitioner/Managing Committee is beseeching this Court to kindly intervene and stay the proceedings of the civil suit pending before the civil judge (senior division), Sambhal at Chandausi. The hot haste in which the survey was allowed and conducted all within a day and suddenly another survey was conducted with a notice of barely six hours, has given rise to widespread communal tensions and threatens the secular and democratic fabric of the nation,” the petition stated.

It further added, “Since the rampant ordering of surveys where belated claims on mosques are made is emerging as a pattern, it has become necessary for this court, in the interest of the constitutional goal of fraternity and in order to do complete justice, to pass directions that surveys should not be ordered and executed as a matter of routine in cases involving different communities over places of worship without hearing the defendants and without allowing sufficient time to the aggrieved persons to seek judicial remedies against the order of survey.”

The manner in which the survey was ordered in this case and has been ordered in some other cases will have an immediate impact in a number of cases across the country that have been filed recently concerning places of worship where such orders will have a tendency to inflame communal passions, cause law and order problems and damage the secular fabric of the country, it said.

Tensions in Sambhal had been simmering since the local court ordered a survey of the mosque on November 19. Opposing the court-ordered survey of the Jama Masjid people clashed with police, resulting in the deaths of four persons.

The survey followed a petition filed by some persons in the local court, claiming that the site of the mosque was previously a Harihar temple. (ANI)

British MP Condemns Attack On Hindus In Bangladesh

Bob Blackman, a Conservative Member of Parliament for Harrow East in the United Kingdom condemned the attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh.

Addressing the parliament on Thursday, Blackman showed his concern by the attempt of a High Court in Bangladesh to ban ISKCON from the country.

In a post on X, he attached a video of himself speaking in the parliament and said, “Today, I condemned the attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh and the imprisonment of Chinmoy Krishna Das. I am also concerned by the attempt in their High Court to rule that ISKCON should be banned from the country. Freedom of religion must be preserved globally.”

He said that Hindus in Bangladesh are now subject to death, with their spiritual leader being arrested and their houses being burnt. He added that the UK has a responsibility to look into the matter because they had enabled Bangladesh’s independence.

“Now, right now, Mr Speaker, the International Society of Krishna Consciousness, who run Bhaktaventa Manor in Elstree, the largest Hindu temple in this country, in Bangladesh, their spiritual leader is under arrest. Hindus across Bangladesh are being subject literally to death by their houses being burnt, their temples are being burnt. And there was an attempt today in the Bangladesh High Court to rule that ISKCON should be banned from the country. This is a direct attack on Hindus. Now this is a threat from India now to take action. We have a responsibility because we enabled Bangladesh to be free and independent,” he said.

Blackman urged the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office to provide an oral statement on the floor of the House to enable them to bring world’s attention to Bangladesh.

“Now whatever the change of government has been in Bangladesh it cannot be acceptable that religious minorities are persecuted in this way. So far we’ve only had a written statement from the FCDO so could the leader enable an oral statement on the floor of this house so we can bring to the world’s attention what is going on in Bangladesh,” he said.

Lucy Powell, Labour and Co-op MP for Manchester Central, echoed Blackman’s views and said that she would ask the Foreign Office to look into the Bangladesh situation.

“He is absolutely right to highlight these issues. We support freedom of religion, belief everywhere, and that includes in Bangladesh. And I will certainly ask the Foreign Office to look into whether they can come forward with a statement about what’s happening to Hindus in Bangladesh,” she said.

ISKCON) on Thursday expressed solidarity with priest Chinmoy Krishna Das, who was arrested on charges of sedition for allegedly raising a flag on a stand displaying Bangladesh’s national flag.

In a post on X, ISKCON, Inc. stated, “ISKCON, Inc. stands with Chinmoy Krishna Das. Our prayers to Lord Krishna for the protection of all these devotees.”

Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari was arrested on charges of sedition for allegedly raising a flag on a stand displaying Bangladesh’s national flag. He was presented before a Chittagong court on Tuesday, which denied his bail plea and remanded him in custody.

The arrest has sparked widespread outrage, with many demanding his immediate release. (ANI)
