Earthquake Of Magnitude 4.1 Strikes Arunachal

India Extends $500,000 Aid To Earthquake-Hit Vanuatu

India announced immediate relief assistance worth USD 500,000 on Thursday, to Vanuatu in the wake of a devastating earthquake, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.

The MEA in a release stated, “India extended its deep condolences to the Government and the people of Vanuatu for the damage and destruction caused by this unprecedented disaster and conveyed its readiness to extend all possible support and assistance in this time of difficulty.”

“As a close friend and partner under the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) and as a gesture of solidarity with the friendly people of Vanuatu, the Government of India extended a monetary assistance of USD 500,000 to support relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts,” MEA press statement added.

India has firmly stood by Vanuatu during times of difficulty and devastation caused by natural disasters. An important pillar of India’s Indo-Pacific Oceans’ Initiative (IPOI), announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in November 2019, is Disaster Risk Reduction and Management.

India is committed to Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) and continues to be a responsible and steadfast responder in the region.

Notably, an earthquake of magnitude 7.4 struck near Vanuatu’s coast in the South Pacific Ocean on 17 December 2024 causing major destruction and loss of life.

National Centre of Seismology (NCS) reported that the earthquake occurred at 7:17 AM Indian Standard Time (IST) and was recorded at a depth of 10 kilometres at Latitude 17.68 S and Longitude 168.03 E.

The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), which is a specialized agency of the United Nations notes that Vanuatu Islands, located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, are prone to earthquakes.

The majority of Vanuatu’s islands are of volcanic origin and are relatively higher than most other Pacific Island countries. Like other small island developing states, Vanuatu has an acute vulnerability to climate change, natural disasters and global shocks, and limited capacity to cope or recover, the IFAD noted.

Vanuatu’s vulnerability has consistently ranked it as the most at-risk country globally under the UN’s World Risk Index since the index was launched in 2011. (ANI)

Elephant Population Increased In 2024

In a positive development, the elephant population in Assam has increased and the number has gone up to 5,828.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the Assam Forest Department has recently conducted the elephant population estimation in Assam 2024.

“The last survey was conducted in Assam in 2017 and it recorded 5,719 elephants in the state. Which has increased to 5,828 in 2024. This is a positive wave for wildlife conservation in Assam,” Biswa Sarma said.

In a post on social media platform X, He also commended the efforts of the Forest Department in elephant conservation. The survey was conducted after seven years.

According to the data of the Assam forest department, in 2002 the elephant population in Assam was 5246 and it had increased to 5281 in 2008.

In 2011 the elephant population in Assam was 5620. In October 2024, a wild elephant was found dead in a paddy field in the Goroimari area of Assam’s Biswanath district. Locals had found the carcass of a wild tusker in the paddy field and immediately informed forest officials and the police.

Earlier on December 29, Assam took a significant step towards mitigating human-wildlife conflict by forming anti-depredation squads in various districts in the fringe areas of Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, located in Assam’s Morigaon district. These squads aim to ensure the safety of both humans and animals, particularly during conflicts arising from the encroachment of wildlife into human habitats.

Forest Range Officer of Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary said that the initiative has been taken by involving locals of nearby villages especially the farmers who are engaged directly in the protection of their farmland from wild animals of Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary.

The Forest Department, in collaboration with the conservation organization Aranyak, established 13 Anti-Depredation Squads, each comprising residents from different villages. Winter jackets, raincoats, and charging torches have been provided to locals with the help of Aranyak, allowing them to assist the department in emergencies during this winter. (ANI)

Bangladesh Should Ensure Justice: Kolkata ISKCON VP On Chinmoy Krishna’s Bail Plea Rejection

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], January 2 (ANI): After a court in Chattogram refused to grant bail to Chinmoy Krishna Das, the former ISKCON leader, following a hearing today, Kolkata ISKCON Vice President Radha Raman Das expressed his disappointment, stating that the world had hoped for his release as the new year began.

He further called on the Bangladesh government to ensure justice for Chinmoy Krishna Das.

While speaking with ANI, Radha Raman Das said, “It’s very sad news. We know that the entire world was keeping an eye on this. Everyone was expecting Chinmoy Prabhu will get freedom in the new year – but even after 42 days, his bail was rejected in a hearing today.”

He added, “After seeing the detailed order, we would get to know the exact reason why his bail plea got rejected. The entire world was looking towards this matter — the British Parliament and American politicians were having discussions on this issue and everyone was worried because of his arrest.”

He further stressed that the government of Bangladesh should ensure that Chinmoy Krishna Das should get justice.

“Bangladesh government should ensure that he gets justice. We are hearing that he is not well but still keeping him in confinement is not correct. We all know that Chinmay became a face of minorities in Bangladesh and the minorities see him as a ray of hope.”

On being about the next step, he said, “His lawyers after reading the detailed order will take steps according to it.”

Meanwhile, Manindra Kumar Nath, Acting General Secretary of Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council told ANI, “Chittagong court has rejected Chinmoy Krishna Das bail prayer. We will go to the high court.”

He added, “Today was the hearing of Chinmoy Das Brammachari’s bail petition case at Chittagong Court. Our Legal Affairs Secretary Advocate Apurba Bhattacharjee and Advocate Anup Saha, General Secretary, Bangladesh Ainjibi Oikya Parishad, Central Committee and other members attended the case in favour of Chinmoy Brammachari. We will move for his bail in the High Court.”

Following the hearing, Chinmoy’s lawyer, Apurba Kumar Bhattacharjee, told The Daily Star that they plan to appeal to the High Court for bail.

Earlier in the day, the bail request was turned down by Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Saiful Islam after about 30 minutes of hearing both parties’ arguments, according to Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Advocate Mofizur Haque Bhuiyan.

Eleven Supreme Court lawyers were set to participate in the bail hearing of Chinmoy Krishna Das.

Earlier on December 3, 2024, Chittagong court had fixed January 2 for bail hearing as the prosecution submitted a time petition and there was no lawyer to represent Chinmoy. The unrest in Bangladesh stems from the sedition charges filed against Chinmoy Krishna Das for allegedly raising a saffron flag above Bangladesh’s national flag in Chittagong on October 25. His arrest on November 25 sparked protests, culminating in violent clashes between his followers and law enforcement outside the Chattogram Court Building on November 27, which resulted in the death of a lawyer.

The situation worsened following additional arrests. According to ISKCON Kolkata, two monks, Adipurush Shyam Das and Ranganath Das Brahmachari, were detained on November 29 after visiting Chinmoy Krishna Das in custody. The organisation’s Vice President, Radha Raman, also claimed that rioters vandalised an ISKCON centre in Bangladesh during the unrest.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had also voiced concern over escalating violence and extremist rhetoric in Bangladesh, emphasising that it has consistently raised the issue of targeted attacks on minorities with Dhaka. (ANI)

Mohammed Rafi – Baiju Bawra of Bollywood

If artificial intelligence (AI) can resurrect the voice of the dead, one voice that India deserves is that of Mohammed Rafi. Arguably though, but besides its mellifluousness, it carries a message that is direly needed today. Generations have heard this voice saying: Awaaz do hum ek hain and also Tu Hindu banega na Musalmaan banega, Insaan ki aulad hai, insaan banega.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi did well to remember Raj Kapoor, Rafi, Akkineni Nageswara Rao (ANR), and Tapan Sinha—all centenarians in 2024. All were voices of an independent India emerging from colonial rule, collectively and individually, who used cinema to convey these very messages.

Of them, Rafi was only a crooner who sang lines written and composed, even lip-synced on the screen by others. Yet, his voice, even as it continues to enthral 45 years after it went silent, and its legacy carries a universal message. Take his song of the 1960s sung in English: Although we hail from different lands, We share one earth and sky and sun, Remember friends the world is one.

When his first wife, whose parents were victims of the Partition holocaust, migrated to Pakistan, Rafi, unlike Noorjehan, Khurshed, GM Durrani and others, chose to remain and work in India and remarried. He was to sing, Mat poochh mera hai kaun vatan aur main kahaan ka hoon, Saara jahaan hai mera, main saarey jahaan ka hoon. (Mr India-1961).

My only ‘live’ listening to him, as a child in the 1950s, was during the Durga Puja festivities. Only later as a grown-up I learnt that his rendering of Man tarapat Hari darshan ko aaj and O duniya ke rakhwale (Baiju Bawra-1952) was amidst a debate wherein the Hindustani Classical exponents of the day were reluctant to acknowledge this prowess of a ‘filmy’ singer.

There was another side to the debate. These songs in obeisance of the Hindu deities were written by Shakeel Badayuni, composed by Naushad Ali and sung by Rafi, all Muslims. That inclusive ethos, by and large, remains Indian cinema’s hallmark.

All of Rafi’s contemporaries and competitors were versatile. But he was, arguably again, the foremost. From a frustrated prince to a boisterous tongawala, he sang romantic songs, bhajans, qawwalis, comic numbers, ghazals, semi-classical compositions, laments, a drunk hero, of separation, heartbreaks, renunciation and patriotic anthems with comparable gusto and dexterity. One doubts if such a range of emotions is evident in present-day writing and singing.

After Mukesh’s hits in Andaz (1949), he became Dilip Kumar’s almost ‘permanent’ voice. Of the 145 songs he sang under Naushad’s baton, 81 of them solo, many were lip-synced by Kumar. He crooned for Raj Kapoor in early films before Mukesh took over. He took over from Manna Dey, Talat Mahmood and Mukesh to sing for Dev Anand with Kishore Kumar, till the latter raced ahead. In the 1965 classic Guide, where Kishore sang the iconic Gaata rahe mera dil“, Rafi’s Tere mere sapne, Din dhal jaye and Kya se kya ho gaya held its ground firmly. His Teen Deviyan songs for Anand are a personal favourite even today.

Among his competitors, Manna De was famous for folk and classical songs, Mukesh for the melancholic ones, Kishore for the comic and the boisterous, and Talat Mahmood for soft ghazals, but Rafi sang all these types and more.

Yet, he was fallible before the market forces. Kishore Kumar emerged as the winner after the release of Aradhana (1969). Taking in the broader picture, this marked the advent of Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan and the beginning of the Rafi-constant Dilip Kumar’s gradual fade-out. Rafi scaled back the heights though after a long hiatus.

His forte lay in imagining how the actor would ‘sing’ his song. This helped him pack pathos for Dilip Kumar, Guru Dutt or Rajendra Kumar, give a romantic lilt to Dharmendra or Manoj Kumar songs and a raunchy-high pitch ‘Yahoo’ for Shammi Kapoor. He reflected the anguish of Balraj Sahni, a father receiving his dead son’s body (Aman-1967).

His was a paradox of private calm and public celebrity status. The perennially composed Rafi would turn naughty on the stage. Bikini-clad girls paraded as he belted Badan pe sitare lapetey huwe (Prince-1969).

He was immensely popular. On a tour of the Caribbean, when he was about to leave after finishing his assignment, his admirers surrounded the aircraft he was about to board and forced him to stay back and sing to them.

Javed Akhtar recounts his ease and confidence while singing. Greeted by visitors through the recording room window, in between two antaraas (stanzas), he moved away to sip water, greeted them with a smile and an aadaab, returned to the microphone and resumed singing.

He was modest to a fault. When fans thrust autograph books at him in his early years, he would ask an accomplice, “What do they want?”

Between 1945 when he began at 17, and 1980, the year he passed away, he recorded songs for over a thousand Hindi films and in a dozen Indian languages and dialects, though primarily in Urdu and Punjabi. Besides, he sang in Persian, Creole, Arabic, Sinhala and Dutch.

The number of songs he rendered is a matter of contention. A biographer puts it at 4,500. Other records say 7,000. To the Guinness Book of Records, he claimed it was more than Lata Mangeshkar. The global record-keeper has credited her with singing “at least 25,000” songs. Rafi was unhappy when it refused to consider his claim and said so to the BBC during an interview.

A motivated and ill-informed criticism of his getting only a Padmashri, when Lata got Bharat Ratna in 2001, has lingered. The timeline says Rafi died at 55, with his career snapped in 1980, while Lata performed for over six decades, till 2009.

Since the two dominated Bollywood’s playback singing scene for many years, a clash was inevitable. Perhaps, Lata was more business-savvy and wanted the producers to pay more royalty. Rafi, happy receiving the money he contracted, did not support her. He argued that the producer/ investor who fulfilled the royalty condition also ran high financial risk. The two did not sing together for a period and the industry suffered the clash of giants, till Jaikishan of the Shankar-Jaikishan duo worked out a compromise.

Rafi received six Filmfare Awards and one National Film Award, besides being adjudged “Singer of the Millennium” and numerous other honours. But they do not fully cover his prowess and contribution.

To end with the hope of the return of his AI-generated voice, the appropriate song, perhaps, would be the Samjhauta (1973) song: Badi dur sey aye hain, Pyar ka tohfa laaye hain.

UP: Thick Layer Of Fog Envelopes Agra, Mathura

A thick layer of fog engulfed Agra city on Thursday amid the inclement weather conditions in the city. The increased fog has resulted in the reduced visibility in the area.

Due to the increased fog, the iconic monument Taj Mahal was barely captured in the visuals as it was covered in a blanket of haze.

According to the prediction of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the minimum temperature can touch the mark of 10 degrees Celsius while the maximum temperature is expected to hover around 19 degrees Celsius in Agra today.

On Wednesday, the regional Met department predicted that January 2 would be a ‘cold day’ for the city.

Additionally, a thick blanket of fog descended over Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura city, resulting in reduced visibility and traffic snarls.

Meanwhile, the national capital is experiencing a significant dip in temperatures, as the mercury in many regions has plummeted significantly as the cold weather prevails at the start of the new year.

According to the India Meteorological Department, the minimum temperature at Delhi’s Palam has dipped further to 6.5 degrees Celsius on Thursday from 7 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. The minimum temperatures recorded at Safdarjung had a slight increase to 7.6 degrees Celsius today from 7.4 degrees Celsius on Wednesday.

The IMD has also forecasted an average minimum temperature of 8 degrees Celsius with the average maximum temperature rising to 17 degrees Celsius today.

The IMD on Wednesday also forecast an active western disturbance starting today, which is expected to raise temperatures in eastern, central, and northern India over the next 3-5 days. However, the Western Himalayan region is likely to experience heavy rain and snowfall due to the disturbance.

“We are forecasting a western disturbance that may become active from tomorrow. Along with this, there is a possibility of another western disturbance. Temperatures may rise in east, central, and north India in the next 3-5 days,” IMD scientist Soma Sen Roy said. (ANI)

Death Toll Rises To 15 In New Orleans ‘Act Of Terrorism’

The death toll has now risen to at least 15 people in the New Orleans “act of terrorism” after a car rammed into a crowd on Bourbon Street in the early hours of Wednesday (US local time), CNN reported.

In an official statement, New Orleans Coroner Dwight McKenna said, “As of now, 15 people are deceased. It will take several days to perform all autopsies. Once we complete the autopsies and talk with the next of kin, we will release the identifications of the victims.”

McKenna informed that the New Orleans Police Department is closely working with the FBI and Homeland Security in investigating this attack.

The FBI earlier described the attack as “an act of terrorism” and revealed that the driver, Shamsud Din Jabbar, had an ISIS flag and multiple suspected explosive devices in his vehicle. The FBI also added that the vehicle was rented from a car-rental platform called Turo.

Moreover, the FBI had previously stated that it does not believe Shamsud Din Jabbar, the driver who carried out the New Orleans attack, was “solely responsible” for the “act of terrorism.”

Alethea Duncan, assistant special agent in charge of the FBI’s New Orleans field office, said the investigation is “aggressively running down every lead, including those concerning Jabbar’s known associates.”

“That’s why we need the public’s help. We’re asking if anybody has had any interactions with Shamsud Din Jabbar in the last 72 hours to contact us,” she said during a news conference.

“The FBI is asking for the public’s help. We’re asking anyone who has information, videos, or pictures to provide it to the FBI,” she added.

Duncan also mentioned that an ISIS flag was found on the trailer hitch of the vehicle used by Jabbar. The FBI is working to determine Jabbar’s “potential associations and affiliations with terrorist organizations,” she said.

The FBI has identified Shamsud Din Jabbar as a US citizen from Texas, and officials confirmed he had previously served in the U.S. military, according to a CNN report.

In a statement on X, the FBI wrote, “This morning, an individual drove a car into a crowd of people on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, killing a number of people and injuring dozens of others. The subject then engaged with local law enforcement and is now deceased. The FBI is the lead investigative agency, and we are working with our partners to investigate this as an act of terrorism.” (ANI)

11 Supreme Court Lawyers To Represent Chinmoy Krishna Das In Bail Hearing Today

Eleven Supreme Court lawyers are set to participate in the bail hearing on Thursday of former ISKCON priest Chinmoy Krishna Das, The Daily Star reported.

Led by advocate Apurba Kumar Bhattacharjee, the legal team will defend Chinmoy, in a sedition case resulting from allegations of disrespecting Bangladesh’s national flag.

While speaking to The Daily Star, lawyer Apurba Kumar Bhattacharjee said, “We have come to Chattogram under the banner of Ainjibi Oikya Parishad, and we will move for Chinmoy in the court for his bail. I already got the Vakalatnama from Chinmoy. I’m a member of both the Supreme Court and Chattogram Bar associations, so I don’t need authorisation from any local lawyer to move the case.”

In December 2024, Veena Sikri, former High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh, in an open letter wrote about Chinmoy Krishna Das. The letter said, “Chinmoy Krishna Das, formerly with the globally renowned ISKCON, together with his colleagues in the Sanatani Jagran Jote put forward an 8-point demand on behalf of the religious minorities of Bangladesh, seeking the enactment of a minority protection law in Bangladesh, with a ministry for the protection of minorities, a special tribunal for trial of cases of minority persecution, including compensation and rehabilitation of victims, a law to recover and protect temples (Debottar), proper enforcement of the Vested Property Return Act, and upgradation of the existing (separate) Hindu, Buddhist and Christian Welfare Trusts to Foundations.” (ANI)

Lahore Ranked World’s Most Polluted City

According to the latest Air Quality Index (AQI) rankings from IQAir, Karachi and Lahore are listed among the most polluted cities in the world, based on data from a prominent global air quality monitoring service.

Both Lahore and Karachi are battling severe air pollution, posing a significant threat to public health. Lahore, in particular, has been ranked as the most polluted city in the world, with an AQI of 354, which is considered “Hazardous” for residents.

With a population exceeding 11 million, the city has long struggled with poor air quality, largely due to vehicle emissions, industrial activities, and crop burning, Express Tribune reported.

As a result, many residents have faced aggravated respiratory problems, including asthma and other lung diseases, particularly during the colder months when the smog is most intense. In the past month, 18,86,586 people have fallen ill due to the smog, with 1,29,229 seeking hospital treatment for respiratory issues.

Meanwhile, 61,00,153 individuals have been diagnosed with cardiothoracic conditions. Similarly, more than 69,399 patients have been reported daily with respiratory problems, chest pain, or strokes caused by smog.

According to the report, Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city, ranks 13th on the list with an AQI of 164, placing it in the “Unhealthy” category. The city’s busy port, heavy traffic, and industrial areas contribute to high pollution levels, threatening both the environment and public health. Despite ongoing efforts to tackle air pollution, Karachi’s air quality continues to worsen, posing serious risks to residents, especially those with existing health conditions.

The Climate Action Centre (CAC), a non-governmental environmental organization, has previously linked the smog in Lahore and other cities in Punjab, as well as the recent haze in Karachi, to vehicle emissions. During a press conference at the Karachi Press Club on Tuesday, CAC Director Yasir Hussain explained that emissions from petrol and diesel vehicles are major contributors to pollution in these cities, responsible for 60% of the pollution in Karachi and 80 per cent in Lahore.

At the same time, the measles outbreak during the winter season has raised alarms among health experts. Measles, marked by symptoms like a runny nose, fever, cough, red eyes, and skin rashes, can be fatal for vulnerable children, particularly those who are malnourished, immunocompromised, or not vaccinated.

Doctors have cautioned that the highly contagious disease spreads quickly from one child to another. They emphasized that parents should ensure their children are vaccinated against measles between the ages of nine months and one and a half years to protect them from this infectious illness. (ANI)
