The Joker Tells The Truth

I have a perfect cure for a sore throat: cut it.
–Alfred Hitchcok

There is something terribly wrong with people who hate humour. Why only humour, if you don’t like dark metaphor, a spoof, a verbal caricature, or even an argument, there should be space to accept it and let it pass.

It’s not that all such people are absolutely perfect in their social conduct and everyday behaviour, including in private spaces. It’s just that alignment with power makes them parasitic to power the government is with them, the cops look the other way, they can do whatever goddamned nonsense they want. If they don’t have political power on their side most of them would turn into wimps, with neither character nor identity.

That is why almost all of them hate young couples, or a young man or woman just being friends in a public space. They would vandalise the place, and torment them, as if it is all written in their holy scriptures. Clearly, they hate love, affection, tender feelings; they themselves seem totally incapable of love or deep human emotions.

Indeed, if you can’t take humour as dissent, then a modern democracy is not fit for you. You might go back to the Tsarist times, or Soviet Russia under Stalin, or any routine Orwellian dictatorship, and celebrate both censorship and self-censorship. That is why Mikhail Bakhtin wrote about the simple-looking peasants of Russia cracking acidic jokes and dismantling the Tsarist empire through their double-meaning innuendos, dark humour, and sing-song caricature. It could be a marriage, or a funeral, or just drunken camaraderie in a village pub, they would be acidic and relentless, followed by rustic laughter all around as collective catharsis.

If people can’t have catharsis using dissent and caricature, they are doomed to rot in a repressed state of permanent morbidity, letting out their frustrated, perverse violence on young couples, or on places like the Habitat in Mumbai. Pray, if you are not a ‘traitor’ and party-hopper, which is as commonplace in India as political double-speak, why take offense?

Charlie Chaplin went into exile because the ‘red-under-the-bed’ trauma was haunting the puritans of the Cold War witch-hunt in America. You can very well ask, so why were they so traumatised by the epic called The Great Dictator made in 1940, soon after the Nazis invaded Poland, even while the Holocaust was in full bloom. So why did they so badly resent a dark spoof on Adolf Hitler? Did it show them the cracked mirror about their own basic instincts?

Not only Chaplin. Several others were hounded, like playright Arthur Miller, and other screenwriters and directors in Hollywood. In the same manner as Donald Trump is going after all and sundry, including students, who are seeking freedom for Palestine and an end to the ongoing genocide in Gaza. You arrest a Mahmoud Khalil of Columbia University, and you are sending a sinister message that no one will be spared. Is Adolf Hitler the new role model for the new establishment in the US?

There was a time when Bombay cinema celebrated the intelligent comedian as an important character in the scheme of things. Johnny Walker, as a comic star, would have lovely songs (Aie dil hai mushkil jeena yahan… for instance), fabulous dialogues, and a romantic role to play as well. And who can forget Asrani and Jagdeep in the cameos in Sholay? Jagdeep’s son, Javed Jaffrey, is fabulous, but who cares a damn for such spoofy brilliance in Bollywood?

ALSO READ: ‘Torn Between The Choice To Be Humorous Or Be Safe’

And why only comedians? Top stars like Dilip Kumar, Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan could do it so well. Remember Dilip Kumar in Sagina Mahato? Or Dharmendra in Sholay, Chupke Chupke and Pratigya, in which, as a drop-out with a shady past, he sets up a fake cop station in a country liquor shop in a nameless village, taking the locals for a jolly good ride?

Amitabh Bachchan was superb with his staccato sentences in Sholay — “tumhara naam kya hai Basanti…”, while surpassing his own talent in Amar Akbar Anthony, especially in the scene when he gets bashed up by a sturdy cop (Vinod Khanna) and talks to the mirror, half-drunk. Even Sridevi was simply ‘too much’ in Chaalbaaz, mixing ‘ghaslate’ in the country booze of a bindaas taxi driver, Rajni Kant.

Now that comic star is gone, so is the vamp, the villain or the happy sister, in Bollywood — all of whom had solid characters. Like Nadira or Shashikala. Or, Johnny Walker as Morari Lal in Anand. Or a genius called Pran, in all his films.

Now all you have is a cliched superstar with one to two expressions in a 100 crore plus, third-rate flick, with no script or story, flexing his steriod muscles, with the heroine as a two-minute, scantily-clad item girl — Sheila ki jawani… or Fevicol. The degeneration is almost perfect in its action-replay.

Cut to the present times. All that stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra sings or speaks need not be in good taste. For instance, his body-shaming the son of Ambani is truly deplorable, or referring to a woman prime minister in Europe with a not-so-tongue-in-cheek remark. He might not agree with her politics, but attacking her character is in rank bad taste. Surely, Kamra should exercise more restrain, and vet his script with a certain editorial precision, blue pencil in hand, in the future.

Even then, Kamra, now ageing and having put on more weight, must have the right to speak and sing spoof. He has been brave all the way, and deserves all the solidarity, from all the intelligent people who appreciate humour and dissent. Indeed, we might agree or disagree with what he speaks or sings, but we will defend his right to freedom of expression.

After all, like Rahul Gandhi, he was holding the little Red Book as his sacred paradigm and text not by Mao, but penned by Dr BR Ambedkar the Constitution of India.

Dhoni Showed Gratitude For The Immense Love From Fans

Former Indian captain and wicketkeeper/batter MS Dhoni has expressed his gratitude for the immense love he has received from Indian Premier League fans over the years. Speaking on JioHotstar, “It’s a big thank you to all my fans.”

He also said, “Last few years I’ve been in, and I will be playing. It’s a way of them saying, ‘Thank you very much for whatever you have done,’ and it’s amazing,” MS Dhoni said on JioHotstar.

“I have always said it’s a big ‘thank you’ from the fans’ side. That’s what I believe. Whatever last few years I’m in and will be playing, it’s a way of them saying, ‘Thank you very much for whatever you have done,’ and it’s amazing.” MS Dhoni said while speaking on JioHotstar.

MS Dhoni emphasizes the immense value of fan appreciation in cricket, especially in India. He highlights the unique thrill of playing in the IPL, where fans eagerly support individual players even when playing against their favourite teams.

“Especially when you play a sport, what you want is the fans’ appreciation. And when it comes to cricket, India is the place to play. Being part of the Indian cricket team is one of the biggest things. I’m not playing international cricket, so IPL is the next best thing to happen. Whenever you walk in, everybody is very excited, they’re waiting for you, they want you to do well–even at times when you’re playing against the team that they want to win, but they still want you to perform, contribute a bit, whatever it may be. It’s an amazing feeling.” he added.

Dhoni, still going strong at 43, holds an integral spot in the hierarchy of the five-time champions. He has continued to perform the role of finisher for Chennai, but over the years, his capacity has significantly reduced.

The veteran wicketkeeper comes out to bat for a couple of overs, flaunts his explosive power-hitting prowess, tries to hit every delivery out of the ground and returns to the dugout.

Chennai Super Kings stalwart and legend MS Dhoni is just 19 runs shy of becoming the franchise’s highest run-scorer in the IPL. Former franchise icon Suresh Raina sits at the top with 4687 runs. (ANI)

Satish Salian, father of the late Disha Salian, on Monday, filed a written complaint with the Mumbai Police Commissioner seeking the registration of an FIR against Aditya Thackeray and others accused in connection with the offences of gang rape and murder of his daughter.

Satish Salian’s advocate, Nilesh Ojha, said that the complaint had been accepted by the Joint Commissioner of Police, and the accused in the case, include Aaditya Thackeray, former Commissioner of Police Parambir Singh, Officer Sachin Vaze and actor Aditya Pancholi.

“Today, we have filed a written complaint to the CP office and the JCP Crime accepted it and this complaint is the FIR now… The accused are Aaditya Thackeray, Dino Morea, Suraj Pancholi and his bodyguard, Parambir Singh, Sachin Vaze, and Rhea Chakraborty are all accused in this FIR…Parambir Singh was the main mastermind for the coverup in this case… He did a press conference and fabricated lies to save Aaditya Thackeray…All the details are in the FIR… NCB’s investigation paper proves that Aaditya Thackeray was involved in a drug business, that detail has been mentioned in this FIR,” the advocate told reporters.

He further alleged that Parambir Singh was the “main mastermind” behind the “coverup” in this case back in 2020.

Ojha also alleged that Aaditya Thackeray is linked with a “drug cartel”, which he said is also mentioned in the complaint.

“Aaditya Thackeray is the main accused in this gangrape and murder case. Uddhav Thackeray is the main accused of misuse of power for the coverup… Aaditya Thackeray is found in the drug cartel and this is in the official records of NCB. We have also mentioned this in the complaint… Today, we will also release some pictures in support of this,” he added.

Earlier, Satish Salian approached the Bombay High Court seeking a probe into his daughter’s death and requesting the registration of an FIR against Aaditya Thackeray, among others.

Disha was found dead on June 8, 2020, days before actor Sushant Singh Rajput was found hanging in his flat in suburban Bandra, Mumbai.

This development came on the heels of the CBI reportedly submitting a closure report on the death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput in 2020.

According to sources, the closure has been filed in a Mumbai Court nearly five years after Sushant Singh’s death.

Sushant, 34, was found dead at his Bandra residence on June 14, 2020, which created a huge controversy, with the investigation later being handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation. His postmortem report stated the cause of death was asphyxia. The postmortem was conducted at Mumbai’s Cooper Hospital. (ANI)

Congress MP Tagore Files Notice Of Question Of Privilege Against Rijiju

Congress MP Manickam Tagore filed a Notice of Question of Privilege in Lok Sabha against Union Minister Kiren Rijiju on Tuesday, accusing him of misleading the House on March 24.

Tagore claimed that Rijiju made false statements about Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar, which he believes is a breach of privilege and contempt of the House.

The notice reads, “I hereby give notice of a question of privilege against Kiren Rijiju, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, for blatantly misleading the House on 24 March 2025, in terms of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Lok Sabha.”

“Kiren Rijiju attributed false statements to DK Shivakumar, Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka. D. K. Shivakumar has since refuted these statements as false and derogatory. Kiren Rijiju’s remarks constitute a breach of privilege and contempt of the House, as it is well established that making false and misleading statements in the House is a breach of privilege and contempt. In light of the above, I respectfully request that privilege proceedings be initiated against Kiren Rijiju in this matter,” the notice further reads.

Earlier, while speaking to ANI outside parliament, Tagore said, “Parliamentary Affairs Minister has breached the privilege and insulted the House itself. Being Parliamentary Affairs Minister (Kiren Rijiju), he should not have done this thing. This is a valid reason for breach of privilege… I hope the privilege committee takes action. Though, till now in Lok Sabha, no privilege committee has been set up.”

This comes after Rijiju sought clarification from Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge regarding the Congress’ position on reservation for Muslims. He said Shivakumar’s remarks were “extremely serious”.

Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on Monday witnessed adjournments as treasury benches sought to corner the Congress over purported remarks of Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar relating to the Constitution, with the Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju and Union Health Minister JP Nadda leading the BJP’s attack.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh on Monday submitted a breach of privilege notice to Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar against Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju for “misleading” the House over Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar’s reported remarks on the Constitution.

DK Shivakumar, also slammed the BJP over its protest on his purported remarks relating to the Constitution and said the party is trying to twist his remarks and he is consulting his legal team.

“I don’t want to comment much on it. There is no hide and seek in this issue. On quotas, there are several judgements which have come, and after every judgement, amendments have been made to the Constitution; there is nothing else. So they (BJP) are trying to twist it. They don’t have any issues. I am happy that Jairam Ramesh has moved a privilege motion. I am also consulting legal experts,” the Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister said. (ANI)

Yogi: Ended Mafia, Established One District One Medical College

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday attacked the previous government and said that the ruling government not only finished mafia but also established ‘One District One Medical college’ in the state.

Gorakhpur: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said, “The state and administration are the same; only the government has changed… As soon as the BJP came to power, the state, which was considered to be a barrier to growth, has now emerged as the no. 1 leading state with growth in every sector… This journey was not easy. The situation was tough before 2017. There were riots every day,” CM Yogi said, addressing the public in Gorakhpur

“The previous government had a mafia in every district that extorted the people, grabbed lands, carried out illegal mining, and smuggled animals; their goons were a danger to traders and daughters. We did not only end the mafia but also established ‘One District One Medical college’,” he added.

Earlier today, CM Yogi distributed motorised tricycles to differently-abled persons and visited an exhibition based on public welfare schemes of the central and Uttar Pradesh governments on the occasion of the completion of eight years of the State government in Gorakhpur.

On Monday, the Chief Minister lauded the performance of his BJP government on its eighth anniversary and said that eight years of “service, safety, and good governance” have been completed under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi.

“Under the leadership of PM Modi, 8 years of service, safety, and good governance have been completed… the double-engine government of UP has completed 8 years today…I thank 25 crore people of Uttar Pradesh for their support,” CM Adityanath said at the press conference.

Yogi Adityanath became the Chief Minister in 2017 after BJP — which went to the polls without a CM face — chose the five-time MP from Gorakhpur to lead the government, received an unprecedented mandate, winning 312 out of 403 seats.

BJP returned to power in the State in the 2022 assembly polls, winning 255 seats, and its allies in the State also registered impressive performance. This made him the first CM in Uttar Pradesh’s history to win two consecutive terms. (ANI)

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday presented the Budget 2025-26 for the national capital. She stated that this year the Delhi government’s Budget is Rs. 1 lakh crores.

Calling the Budget “historic,” the Chief Minister said that this is a budget of transformation from a dire economy to Viksit Delhi.

“This is not an ordinary budget. Delhi and whole country is watching this. They all have very hope with new government. This budget is not just an account or ledger; this is budget of transformation from bad economy to Viksit Delhi. The Delhi government’s budget this year is Rs. 1 lakh crores. This budget is historic. CM Gupta said, “The previous government failed in every aspect of development… Yamuna was unclean, road were damaged, air pollution was high. Delhi Jal Board, DTC… were facing losses. Dirty water and overflowing sewers became Delhi’s identity. Being handed over such a government and running it is no less than a challenge…”

“The previous government did not have the will. Those figures were the result of financial mismanagement. Government income decreased because the government revenue was going into the pockets of liquor mafia and PWD contractors. The days of mismanagement of the disaster government are over,” she added.

CM Gupta arrived at the Vidhan Sabha with the Budget document ahead of the Budget presentation. She was accompanied by his cabinet members.

Earlier today, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta held a cabinet meeting ahead of the presentation of the first Budget of the newly formed Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in the national capital.

This Budget Session is significant, as it follows the recent 2025 Delhi Legislative Assembly election, which saw the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) return to power after 27 years. (ANI)

J-K: Two Hurriyat Groups Drop Separatism, Shah Hails Move

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday hailed the decision of two Hurriyat-affiliated organizations to break away from separatism in Jammu and Kashmir, calling it a “significant victory” for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a peaceful and united India.

Shah’s reaction came soon after the significant development came to the fore with the two organizations affiliated with the Hurriyat Conference made the announcement about their decision to sever ties with separatism in Jammu and Kashmir.

“Separatism has become history in Kashmir. The unifying policies of the Modi government have tossed separatism out of J&K. Two organizations associated with the Hurriyat have announced the severing of all ties with separatism,” Shah expressed his views through his ‘X’ handle.

“I welcome this step towards strengthening Bharat’s unity and urge all such groups to come forward and shed separatism once and for all. It is a big victory for PM Shri @narendramodi Ji’s vision of building a developed, peaceful and unified Bharat.”

The decision by the two Hurriyat-linked groups is seen as a reflection of the changing political landscape in the Union Territory. Over the past few years, the government has implemented a series of measures aimed at curbing separatist activities, including strict enforcement of anti-terror laws and socio-economic reforms.

Officials believe this development signals a significant shift in Jammu and Kashmir’s political scenario, paving the way for further integration and peace. (ANI)

Airlines Refuse To Share Fare Data; DGCA Examining Issue Amid High Airfare Complaints

After airlines refused to share airfare data with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the aviation regulator on Monday said that it is examining the matter.

Speaking to ANI, a senior DGCA official said they are in communication with airline officials regarding the issue.

“We want to study the trend of air ticket prices following complaints by the public about high fares during peak seasons. Recently, during Mahakumbh, there were many such complaints. Tata Consultancy Service, the digitisation vendor for the DGCA, has been tasked with analyzing the matter,” the official said.

In December, the DGCA asked airlines to submit data on each passenger, such as the fare levied along with the booking date and the base fare, as well as the number of passengers on the flight. In the first week of January, the first meeting between DGCA and FIA was held over data sharing.

On March 3, DGCA held another meeting with airlines, requesting them to share fare data. In response, the Federation of Indian Airlines (FIA), on behalf of its member airlines (Air India, IndiGo, and SpiceJet) expressed concerns about the request.

“We must stress that the sharing of raw/granular fare data presents significant risks to airline confidentiality, operational viability, and market competitiveness. Given the highly competitive nature of the aviation industry, any potential data breach or mishandling could result in serious commercial implications. The exposure of sensitive fare data to multiple external agencies, including consultants and third parties, heightens the risk of unauthorized disclosure, strategic exploitation, and commercial setbacks for airlines,” the FIA said in a letter to DGCA.

“Our member airlines operate in full compliance with Section 135 of The Aircraft Rules, 1937, with the prevailing airfare structure allowing airlines to sustainably operate while maintaining accessibility and service quality for passengers. It is crucial to recognize that airlines require pricing flexibility to accommodate seasonal demand fluctuations, fuel price volatility, and market conditions to maintain economic viability,” read the letter.

The Civil Aviation Ministry recently intervened to address concerns over steep airfare prices, particularly for flights to Prayagraj during the 2025 Mahakumbh Mela. (ANI)
