Pakistan: Over 110 Christian Workers Denied Wages Before Easter

Over 110 Christian sanitation workers employed under the “Suthra Punjab” initiative in Pakistan’s Wazirabad were allegedly not paid their salaries during the Easter holiday, prompting protests and serious concerns about ‘exploitation’ by a private waste management company contracted by local authorities, Dawn reported.

The protesting workers said that the company provided them only partial payments ranging from Pakistani Rupees (PKR) 8000 to Pakistani Rupees (PKR) 12000 instead of full monthly wages, even as they continued to perform their duties during the Easter Holiday.

The impacted workers said that they are not formally on the municipal payroll and are at the mercy of the private contractor managing sanitation operations under the provincial cleanliness campaign, Dawn reported.

Another group of workers from Sindh, also deployed by the company, held a protest on the road in response to withheld salaries. A video of a company official allegedly trying to run over a protester with a vehicle surfaced on social media, sparking public outcry.

Around 40 workers employed by the Municipal Committee Wazirabad were paid on time, Dawn reported, citing sources. However, those working under the contractor did not receive full payment.

Speaking to reporters, workers said that the exploitation has become a routine under the new waste management setup, and no one is paying attention to their grievances.

Sanitation services were impacted in various areas due to the protests, resulting in garbage getting piled up across the city and creating unsanitary conditions. Locals said that the situation is a slap in the face to the “Suthra Punjab” campaign.

Company officials have rejected the workers’ allegations. A company representative said that all employees would receive full payment before Easter and termed the reports of PKR 14 million in outstanding dues to the Sindhi contractor as baseless.

Civic and business communities have urged Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to take notice of the situation and act strictly against those responsible for the workers’ mistreatment and the breakdown of municipal services, Dawn reported.

Christians across the world marked Good Friday on Friday. Good Friday is a Christian holiday commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus. Good Friday also marks the beginning of the Easter weekend. Observed on the Friday before Easter Sunday, it is a day of reflection, mourning, and remembrance of Jesus’ sacrifice on behalf of humanity.

Traditionally practised activities for the day include praying, fasting, and visiting churches. The day celebrates the resurrection of Jesus. According to the Bible, it marks the third day after Jesus was crucified, when he rose from the dead. People often associate Easter with chocolate eggs, lambs, and bunnies that symbolise the coming of spring. (ANI)

Vaishnaw Showcases India’s Indigenous AI Server ‘Adipoli’

Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw showcased India’s first fully designed AI server named Adipoli, developed by VVDN Technologies.

Vaishnaw highlighted that the AI server ‘Adipoli’ is equipped with 8 GPUs and was completely designed in India, underlining the country’s growing strength in advanced electronics and artificial intelligence.

He praised the efforts of VVDN Technologies and called the launch a major step forward for the “Make in India” initiative.

The minister also noted that Indian-made electronic products are becoming increasingly reliable and globally competitive. He emphasised that India’s focus on protecting intellectual property rights is gaining recognition in international markets, boosting investor confidence and encouraging innovation in the country.

Speaking at VVDN Technologies’ Global Innovation Park in Manesar, where he inaugurated a new SMT (Surface Mount Technology) Line, the Minister highlighted the rapid strides made under the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative.

“Over a period of time, India has developed strong capabilities in electronics design. These capabilities now include products related to the automobile sector, power electronics, signalling, and security systems. Designing and manufacturing of such products is increasingly happening within India, which is a significant achievement under the Prime Minister’s ‘Make in India’ program,” he told reporters.

“With the recent addition electronic component scheme, the depth and scope of development will further expand. Moreover, the reliability of Indian products and the country’s commitment to respecting intellectual property rights are gaining global recognition,” he added.

He emphasised that a key development in the electronics sector has been the emergence of large-scale design teams within manufacturing firms.

“We are here in a facility which has a design team as big as 5,000 engineers. These young engineers are designing some of the most complex products, embedded with AI, moving far beyond legacy systems,” he said.

Calling this a “big leap”, Vaishnaw stressed that India’s edge lies in its design talent — something many other countries lack.

“This is very important because this is going to give us that big advantage compared to many other countries which don’t have this much design talent,” he said.

He noted that India’s electronics manufacturing has grown fivefold in the past decade, touching Rs 11 lakh crore, while exports have increased six times to over Rs 3.5 lakh crore. (ANI)

There’s No Window In My Cell, Faiz!

Listen! Faiz,
Do you know?
The difference
between your and my wait
Is only
A fixed time
Just a few more days
You knew that
Like the gust of breeze
Speechless cloud does not tell
When I ask—
“How many more seasons like this?”
Who knows how many more seasons?
Gulfisha Fatima, prison poems.

So, how many more seasons, condemned, exiled, trapped, a young girl, a brilliant scholar, a compassionate heart which beats for justice?

How many more seasons would it take for the wise and elderly, in the justice system, and in the political establishment, to realise, that, perhaps this is sheer injustice, and a form of relentless cruelty. Only because she was a peaceful dissenter,  and, of course, a Muslim and a woman.

With the arrival of spring and summer, this was no Vivaldi’s lilting four seasons for Gulfisha Fatima. April 9 this year marked five years of un-freedom for her. Five years can look like infinity, if you look at the drab walls which traps a young, restless soul with a spark in her eyes. It could be like living hell.

And, yet, from where do these young minds generate the stoic resilience, the dogged optimism, the spirit of freedom, the power to write?

While the political class, the students and academia, the mainstream media and intelligentsia, chooses to shut their eyes wide shut, a few sensitive souls, recited her poetry, sitting on the bench in a park, inside a metro or a library, across the pan shop on the street, in the classroom, here, there, everywhere, as a symbolic soliloquy of solidarity. And protest.

Devangana Kalita, a former JNU Phd scholar, too, was imprisoned in Tihar Jail, Delhi. She was released along with Natasha Narwal, another JNU researcher. Their crime: peaceful protest with other women against the polarising and communal CAA.

ALSO READ: Devangana’s Husband Andre Ling Recounts Their Ordeal

In a PUCL bulletin, Devangana writes: “Gulfisha did not have any prior experience of engaging or organising protests. She learned and emerged organically as the movement progressed to become a powerful voice of collective assertion and democratic resistance. In the sit-in protest site in Seelampur, she used to regularly hold adult literacy classes for the women who would come to participate in the protest. She was committed to building women’s local initiative and leadership through the protests. In the face of inhuman incarceration, she has remained steadfast in her commitment to education, activism, and the collective spirit of solidarity. Inside the prison, she has become a source of hope and support for her co-inmates, many of whom rely on her for basic literacy, legal aid, and emotional support. As a tutor with the ‘Pado Padhao’ programme inside prison, she has taught fellow prisoners to read and write, and has provided them with a sense of agency that is often denied within the prison system. Gulfisha has also found strength in creativity, turning her hardships into powerful poetry, artwork, and letters that capture the emotional toll of her unjust imprisonment…”

She continues: “It will soon be five years since Gulfisha’s arrest. While Gulfisha got bail in the other two FIRs in 2020 itself, she continues to remain incarcerated under the UAPA case. Her quest for bail in FIR 59/20 has been marked with never-ending adjournments and judicial delays in what has become a complete travesty of justice. She filed for bail in the High Court in May 2022. It will be three years for her, just waiting for a verdict on her petition. Her bail has been argued twice but judges in two benches have been transferred and they have left without pronouncing a judgement. Currently, since November last year, her bail is being argued for the third time in the High Court and the ordeal continues…”

The ordeal continues. According to a statement by the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom, Gulfisha is detained for protesting religious freedom conditions. In May 2020, Fatima was granted bail in the Jaffrabad protest case (FIR 48/2020). However, she was forced to remain in prison under FIR 59/2020. On June 26, 2020, several UN experts called for the release of Fatima and other protesters, saying that their arrests seem “clearly designed to send a chilling message…that criticism of government policies will not be tolerated”.

For a young girl, exercising her fundamental right of peaceful protest, the commission cites the charges against her: Criminal Premeditation and Conspiracy, Hate Speech, Illicit Financing Murder and Attempted Murder, Public Disorder, Terrorism, and Treason and Sedition.

Similar cases include others who are still languishing in jail: Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, Khalid Saifi, and others. The Neo-Nazi apparatus of stark injustice rolls on.

On June 15, 2021, Devangana, Natasha Narwal and Asif Iqbal Tanha were granted bail by the Delhi High Court in a historic order which observed: “We are constrained to say, that it appears, that in its anxiety to suppress dissent and in the morbid fear that matters may get out of hand, the State has blurred the line between the constitutionally guaranteed ‘right to protest’ and ‘terrorist activity’.” Subsequently, their bail was challenged by Delhi Police in the Supreme Court. On May 2, 2023, the Supreme Court upheld Devangana, Natasha and Asif’s bail. It, however, directed that the above bail order cannot be “treated as precedent”. (Sabrangindia.in, Courtesy Free Speech Collective, April 9, 2025).

In a tweet, Natasha Narwal has written: Today marks three years of Gulfisha’s painful incarceration under UAPA for daring to raise her voice against the unjust CAA-NRC-NPR. She has been penning beautiful heart-wrenching poetry from her prison cell. Listen to them. Let it sink in.

In this darkness at noon, their ordeal speaks of a Neo-Nazi State which seems to have focused on young Muslims, especially enlightened and brilliant scholars, who have a parallel vision for the country, who are peaceful dissenters, and who believe in the Indian Constitution. They are celebrating the murderer of Graham Staines and his two teenage sons, burnt alive in their vehicle in Odisha. In the same manner, a former Union minister garlanded the mob-lyncher in Jharkhand. The same way as “Brahmins with good Sanskar” rapists of Bilkis Bano were feted and garlanded after their release. A predictable pattern, indeed.

The message is cold-blooded: if you are young, Muslim, and, worse, an intellectual with a political vision which is radical, inspirational, egalitarian, secular and pluralistic, and if you dare to protest, then you better be prepared to be condemned in a prison, branded as a terrorist, or charged with sedition and other deadly cases under a draconian law. While bail is the rule, and the accused is deemed innocent till proved guilty, for these young men and women, the process itself has become the punishment.

And, indeed, once they are found innocent, who will return them their nights and days, their seasons of poetry, happiness and romance, their freedom and desires, the love of their loved ones?

Who will give them these precious days of youth back?

In the same poem, writes Gulfisha:

On the pitch-black night yesterday,
There was a knock on the doors of prison
Of the innocent breezes
Of cries of our dear ones
Even the lightning
Was screaming for help
Asking for our freedom
Even the well-shaped branches
Openly joined in the grief
After failed attempts
And losing control
The delicate tears of rain
Started to pour
Struck against the earth’s crust,
And the rhythm of the drops
Turned it into
A commotion of pleas.
But—
The deaf snakes
Kept dancing
With their poisonous hoods
Laying their web of traps.
And—
The oppressed
Stood with their hands raised
On that pitch-black night…
The court says:
Now that you have come
Make an appeal, but yes
It will take long
And by then, you will be exhausted.
Justice says:
I am precious
Hear me loud in clear
You may be destroyed/consumed
Seeking me

US: FBI Arrests Harpreet Singh, Terrorist Involved In Attacks In Punjab

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) arrested a terrorist involved in attacks in Punjab, Harpreet Singh, in the US on Friday.

The FBI said that Harpreet Singh is linked to two international terrorist groups and entered the US illegally. According to the FBI, he used burner phones to evade capture.

In a post shared on X, FBI Sacramento stated, “Today, Harpreet Singh, an alleged terrorist responsible for terror attacks in Punjab, India, was arrested by the FBI and ERO in Sacramento. Linked to two international terrorist groups, he entered the U.S. illegally and used burner phones to evade capture.”

On March 23, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) chargesheeted four terror operatives of the Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) terrorist organisation in the 2024 Chandigarh grenade attack case. The chargesheeted accused include Pakistan-based Designated Individual Terrorist

Harwinder Singh Sandhu alias Rinda, and US-based Harpreet Singh alias Happy Passia.

The two terrorists were the primary handlers and conspirators behind the attack. They had provided logistical support, terror funds, weapons, and ammunition to India based on-ground operatives in Chandigarh for executing the grenade attack. The September 2024 attack was intended to target a retired officer of Punjab Police, who the assailants believed to be the occupant of the house.

Investigations revealed that Rinda, along with Happy Passia, had orchestrated the conspiracy to strike terror among law enforcement officials and general public through the grenade attack, as part of the broader aim to promote BKI’s terrorist agenda. They had recruited local operatives, namely Rohan Masih and Vishal Masih, who were tasked with carrying out the attack under their direct instructions.

Rinda and Happy directed the other accused, Rohan Masih and Vishal Masih, to conduct reconnaissance on the target twice before hurling the grenade, investigations revealed.

In the chargesheeted filed before the Special NIA Court, Chandigarh in the case RC15/2024/NIA/DLI, all four accused persons have been charged under multiple sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), the Explosive Substances Act, and other related provisions, for their roles in planning and supporting the attack. Investigations in the case are continuing and NIA is trying to track down other members of the BKI terror group and dismantle its network in India.

Earlier in December last year, the Punjab Police has dismantled a Pakistan-ISI-backed terror module being operated by Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), being operated by Harpreet Singh alias Happy Passia and Shamsher alias Honey with the arrest of its five members including mastermind Abhijot Singh involved in lobbying hand-grenade at two police establishments in Batala and Gurdaspur. Virat Kohli Tops Batting Charts, Yuzvendra Chahal Leads With The Ball As IPL turns 18

On April 18, the Indian Premier League (IPL) celebrates its 18th birthday, a tournament that revolutionised cricket and changed the sport’s landscape forever. The league’s inception was nothing short of dramatic, as Brendon McCullum of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) lit up the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium with an unforgettable 158* off just 73 deliveries, smashing ten fours and thirteen sixes against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). That one knock announced the arrival of a cricketing carnival.

As the league undergoes its 18th season, Virat Kohli stands as the highest run-scorer in IPL history. Representing just one franchise–Royal Challengers Bangalore–Kohli has amassed an astounding 8,252 runs from 258 matches, including eight centuries and 58 fifties. Remarkably, he has never missed a season for RCB, making him the league’s most loyal and prolific batter.

Just behind Kohli is veteran Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan, who has accumulated 6,769 runs in 222 matches. Unlike Kohli, Dhawan has journeyed across five franchises: Mumbai Indians (MI), Deccan Chargers (DCH), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Delhi Capitals (DC), and Punjab Kings (PBKS).

India’s five-time IPL-winning captain, Rohit Sharma, sits third on the list with 6,710 runs from 263 matches. He has played for two teams–Deccan Chargers and Mumbai Indians–and has lifted the trophy with both, cementing his status as one of the league’s most successful players.

Australian southpaw David Warner, a destructive force at the top of the order, occupies the fourth spot. With 6,565 runs in 184 games, Warner has represented Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad, leading SRH to their maiden title in 2016.

Fifth on the list is Suresh Raina, the now-retired former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) stalwart. Raina scored 5,528 runs in 205 matches and also represented Gujarat Lions during CSK’s brief suspension from the league.

On the bowling front, Yuzvendra Chahal leads the charts with 211 wickets in 166 matches. His IPL journey began with Mumbai Indians, but it was at RCB where he truly flourished. Later, he represented Rajasthan Royals, and in 2024, Punjab Kings secured his services for a whopping INR 18 crore.

Veteran leg-spinner Piyush Chawla follows with 192 wickets in 192 games. A two-time IPL winner, Chawla hit the winning runs in KKR’s 2012 final and was also part of CSK’s victorious 2021 squad. He has also featured for Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) and Mumbai Indians.

Third on the list is KKR legend Sunil Narine. Since joining the franchise in 2012, Narine has been a game-changer with both bat and ball. He played a key role in KKR’s title triumphs in 2012, when he took 24 wickets, and in 2014, when he took 21 wickets. In 2024, Narine had a dream season, scoring 488 runs and taking 17 wickets, helping KKR lift their third IPL title. In total, Narine has 187 wickets from 183 games. He was also adjudged the Most Valuable Player of the Season thrice (2012, 2018, 2024).

Bhuvneshwar Kumar, the swing specialist, also has 187 wickets, achieved across 181 matches. He has played for RCB, Pune Warriors India, and Sunrisers Hyderabad, winning the Purple Cap twice in the process.

Ravichandran Ashwin rounds off the top five with 185 wickets in 218 matches. Ashwin has donned the jerseys of Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals, Kings XI Punjab, Rising Pune Supergiants, and Rajasthan Royals. In 2025, he returned to CSK, reuniting with the franchise where it all began. (ANI)

Murshidabad Violence: Police Arrest Third Accused In Father-Son Murder Case

West Bengal Police on Thursday arrested another accused in connection with the murder of Hargobind Das and his son Chandan Das during the recent violence in Murshidabad, officials said.

This marks the third arrest in the case.

According to officials, the accused has been identified as Injamul Haq, a local of the area. He is alleged to have tampered with and destroyed CCTV footage related to the incident and is reportedly directly involved in the case.

Assistant Director General (ADG) of Police, South Bengal, Supratim Sarkar, said the State Special Task Force (STF) arrested Haq, who tried to disrupt the investigation by damaging local CCTV connections during the violence.

“We constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate all incidents of violence that took place on April 11 and the following days. The SIT consists of 11 members and is headed by Syed Waquar Raza, DIG Murshidabad Range. We had already arrested two people a couple of days ago – Kalu Nadar and Dildar Nadar. Yesterday, the STF nabbed Injamul Haq, a resident of Suripara, adjacent to the place of the incident. Preliminary interrogation revealed that while he may not be the main perpetrator, he did attempt to disrupt the investigation by destroying and tampering with the local CCTV connections so that evidence is not available to the police,” Sarkar said.

Miscreants allegedly murdered the father-son duo at Samserganj in Murshidabad district during the violence.

ADG Sarkar added, “Whoever is directly or indirectly associated with the murder of the father-son duo, we will nab everyone. We will submit an expeditious chargesheet and will ensure a quick conviction.”

Meanwhile, the Calcutta High Court on Thursday stated that central forces will remain in Murshidabad for some time to maintain law and order and said that the court will monitor the restoration and rehabilitation of victims and ordered officials from the BJP, TMC, and others not to make provocative speeches that could escalate tensions.

A division bench comprising Justices Soumen Sen and Raja Basu Chowdhury directed the state government to set up a committee to facilitate rehabilitation for those affected by the violence.

This committee will include members from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), West Bengal Human Rights Commission, and the State Legal Services Authority.

Advocate Priyanka Tibrewal, the petitioner, said, “The Court took cognisance of the matter and pressed on 4 issues. The court will look into the restoration and rehabilitation of victims. The state government has to manage their housing till they (violence victims) get their homes. It has been ordered to set up a committee which will have a member of the National Human Rights Commission, State Human Rights Commission, and the committee will take all the problems of the victims and the court will monitor it.”

The next hearing is scheduled for Monday.

Advocate Kalyan Banerjee, representing the state, stated that the court has directed that no one will be allowed to make any provocative statements.

Kalyan Banerjee said, “A team of one member each from National Human Rights Commission, State Human Rights Commission and State Legal Services Authority will be set up. They will visit the site and later submit the report to the court. The view of the rehabilitation scheme remains with the state. They asked for NIA, CBI and full authority to central forces, but it was not given.”

Earlier, the Calcutta High Court had directed the deployment of central forces in Murshidabad following reports of large-scale violence. (ANI)

‘We’re Going To Make A Very Good Deal With China,’ Says Trump

US President Donald Trump on Thursday expressed confidence about reaching a “very good” trade deal with China, even as the US imposed steep tariffs of up to 245 per cent on Chinese imports in response to Beijing’s retaliatory actions.

“We’re going to make a deal. I think we’re going to make a very good deal with China,” Trump said, as reported by The Hill. He also told reporters he thought the U.S. would have “very little problem making a deal with Europe or anybody else.”

Trump’s remarks came during the visit of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to the White House, where he also expressed confidence in reaching a trade deal with the European Union (EU) before the 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs ends.

According to a White House fact sheet, China’s retaliatory actions have resulted in up to a 245 per cent tariff on imports to the United States. Prior to the latest revision, a 145 per cent tariff was being levied on Chinese exports to the United States.

Reacting to the White House’s statement claiming China now faces up to 245 per cent tariffs on imports to the US, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said they should ask the US side for the “specific tax rate figures.”

Lin said that China has repeatedly stated its solemn position on the tariff issue. He said that the tariff war was initiated by the US, and that Beijing has taken countermeasures to protect its legitimate rights and interests and international fairness and justice, terming it completely “reasonable and legal.”

He noted that tariffs and trade wars have no winner. However, he said that China does not want to fight these wars, but is not scared of them. He expressed China’s commitment to joining hands and removing barriers. (ANI)

2 Dead, 5 Injured In Shooting At Florida State University; Suspect Identified Is Deputy’s Son

Two persons were killed and five others injured in a shooting at Florida State University (FSU) in Tallahassee, United States, on Thursday (local time), CNN reported.

The shooting occurred near the university’s student union when a 20-year-old opened fire on students.

The accused was later shot by the police as he “did not comply with commands” and has been admitted to the hospital, Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell said in a press conference.

Revell added does not believe the suspect fired at officers.

“The suspect was identified as 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner, the son of a Leon County Sheriff Deputy,” Leon County Sheriff Walter A. McNeil said at a conference.

The suspected gunman had access to his mother’s weapon. Authorities recovered a handgun from the person. A shotgun was also found in the university’s Student Union, and another firearm was recovered in the suspect’s vehicle.

“Unfortunately, her son (Deputy Sheriff’s son) had access to one of her weapons and that was one of the weapons that was found at the scene,” McNeil said. “We are continuing that investigation into how that weapon was used and what other weapons perhaps he may have had access to.”

Florida State University President Richard McCullough called it a “tragic day,” CNN reported.

“We’re absolutely heartbroken by the violence that occurred on our campus earlier today,” he said at a news conference.

In the aftermath of the incident, the university has announced the cancellation of all classes, events and business operations through Friday. Essential employees were told to check with their supervisors. All athletic events scheduled in Tallahassee over the weekend have also been cancelled.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump said that he has been briefed about the shooting.

“I’ve been briefed on the Florida State University, Tallahassee, active shooting. I guess it’s an active shooter, fully briefed as to where we are right now. It’s a shame. Horrible thing, horrible that things like this take place, and we’ll have more to say about it later,” Trump said while speaking to reporters in the Oval Office.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement that the administration is “actively monitoring the situation,” CNN reported.

“The President has been briefed on the shooting at Florida State University and the White House is actively monitoring the situation,” she said. (ANI)
