Pakistan: Climate Experts Warn Neglect Of Waterways May Worsen Flood Situation In Karachi

Climate change experts and civil society members have called for the urgent restoration and clearing of Karachi’s natural waterways, warning that continued negligence could lead to more frequent and severe urban flooding, Dawn reported.

The concerns were raised during a session titled “Obstacles to Karachi’s Natural Waterways and Potential Threats” held at the Karachi Press Club. Speakers noted that housing societies such as Saadi Town and Saadi Garden, along with projects near the Malir Expressway, also known as Shahrah-i-Bhutto, were built on natural waterways and posed serious environmental risks.

According to Dawn, participants pointed out that hill torrents from the Kirthar range often swell the Lyari and Malir rivers, making it critical to remove blockages and encroachments to ensure smooth water flow.

Urban planner Muhammad Toheed said climate change was now an undeniable reality and stressed that while other countries had upgraded their drainage and infrastructure, Karachi remained far behind.

“Environmental and climate-related issues are nowhere on our list of priorities,” he said. “Despite Pakistan being among the most vulnerable countries to climate change, the issue is still not treated with the urgency it deserves.”

Toheed criticised the absence of proper planning and coordination among civic bodies, adding that contractors often build roads without engineering oversight. “This results in poorly designed surfaces that cause water accumulation and the formation of low-lying flood-prone areas,” he noted, as reported by Dawn.

He also condemned the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation for discharging sewage into stormwater drains. “This is a disaster. Now we can’t even tell the difference between a sewerage line and a storm water drain,” he said. “The city’s sewerage system has collapsed, with sewage stagnating in several areas even in the absence of rainfall.”

Agriculturist Azeem Dehqan reminded residents of Karachi’s history and said Malir and its surrounding areas were once fertile lands producing crops, fruits and vegetables. He said this agricultural productivity had collapsed due to poor urban planning and unchecked housing projects.

Similarly, author Ramzan Baloch recalled that Malir was once known for clean drinking water and high-quality crops. “Over the years, the area has suffered severe degradation of its natural resources,” he said, lamenting the lack of public interest in environmental issues.

Social activist Bashir Baloch underlined that large volumes of rainwater from the Kirthar range flowed into the Lyari and Malir rivers and stressed the need to clear obstructions to prevent future disasters. Referring to a past incident, he said, “The British had once constructed a railway bridge over the Malir River, which was later washed away by heavy rains due to the large volume of water flowing through the river. Something similar had happened during the current rains.”

He also criticised the Karachi mayor, saying he “lacked a proper understanding of the city’s geography and its natural water channels, as evident from his recent media briefings.”

Climate activist Yasir Darya warned that climate change had made weather patterns increasingly unpredictable. “Even weather experts are now struggling to accurately forecast conditions beyond a few days. In such a situation, better urban planning is urgently needed in Karachi to prepare for and adapt to these changes,” he said.

A resolution passed during the session demanded the restoration of Karachi’s natural waterways and sewerage system, the protection of agricultural land, sewage treatment for farming use, and safeguards for villages within city limits. Lawyers Abeera Ashfaque, Kazim Mahesar and others also addressed the gathering, Dawn reported. (ANI)

Over 1,800 Flights Disrupted At Dallas Airports Due To Telecom Outage

More than 1,800 flights were delayed and hundreds were canceled at the two Dallas-area airports on Friday, after a telecom outage prompted the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to issue ground stops.

The FAA said it was slowing traffic due to a reported local telephone company equipment issue that does not involve FAA equipment. “The FAA is working with the telephone company to determine the cause,” the agency said.

The FAA said it had halted departures to Dallas-Fort Worth until 11 pm ET and to Dallas Love Field until at least 8:45 pm. FlightAware said airlines have cancelled 20 per cent of their flights at Dallas.

American Airlines cancelled more than 200 flights and delayed more than 500, nearly all tied to the Dallas telecom outage — impacting a quarter of its schedule. Southwest Airlines had delayed more than 1,100 flights, or 27 percent of its schedule, according to FlightAware, which tracks flights. (ANI/WAM)

Akhilesh Slams Centre Over H-1B visa fee hike

Addressing a press conference, Akhilesh Yadav questioned the central government’s preparation to deal with the US’ move as it is likely to affect the IT and technology sector.

He said, “Investment was raised in Uttar Pradesh; Infosys, Samsung and other companies came (to UP). It is not the first time America has behaved in such a manner. Our foreign policy is weak. What is the preparation if other nations do the same?”

Further, he claimed that India is dependent on other nations for goods, including oil, and alleged several mistakes in handling the economy.

“After the WTO, other mistakes are being made due to which we are not looking economically strengthened. We are dependent on other countries for everything, including oil. The list is long. We are still doing business with a country that has taken away our land many times,” he said.

Akhilesh’s criticism comes after the US president on Friday (local time) issued a new presidential proclamation titled “Restriction on Entry of Certain Nonimmigrant Workers” that introduces a major overhaul to the H-1B visa programme, imposing a steep USD 100,000 annual fee on H-1B visa applications, raising fresh questions about whether this is a much-needed correction or a potentially crippling blow to America’s tech talent pipeline.

The move is likely to affect the Indians looking for jobs in the technology and IT sectors in the US, and has led to strong criticism from the Opposition.

Earlier, Congress leader Pawan Khera criticised PM Modi’s silence on the issue and claimed that US President Donald Trump insults India every day.

The Congress leader also claimed that if the Prime Minister had announced on the floor that Trump is a liar, the whole country would have supported him.

“Trump is insulting us every day. But the PM is silent. Rahul Gandhi gave him an opportunity to say on the Floor of the House that Trump is a liar. Had he said that, the country would have stood with him. Today, the entire country is questioning the PM.” Khera told ANI.

He stated that Rahul Gandhi warned PM Modi in 2017 about a potential H-1B-like order, but PM Modi did nothing.

“This is not a new development. On 5th July 2017, Rahul Gandhi had tweeted and alerted PM Modi that this was going to happen and do something. But he was a weak PM back then and even today. You have the result today…Crores of youth of this country are going to face a loss,” said Khera.

Meanwhile, the revised visa fee is set to take effect on September 21. The proclamation represents one of the Trump administration’s most aggressive efforts yet to overhaul the H-1B visa programme. (ANI)

‘Always Been A Prodigy’: Sai Kishore Praises Shubman Gill’s Leadership Skills

Gujarat Titans (GT) spinner Sai Kishore praised Shubman Gill’s natural leadership, citing his impressive captaincy in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for GT and in the England Test tour for India.

Gill was appointed captain of the Indian Test team after Rohit Sharma’s retirement, leading the team in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, a five-match Test series against England, which ended in a 2-2 draw.

Gill also serves as the captain of GT IPL. After Hardik Pandya departed from the franchise, Gill was appointed as GT’s captain ahead of the IPL 2024 season and continued in that role for the 2025 season. He had shown promise as a leader, guiding the team to the playoffs in IPL 2025.

While speaking to ANI, Sai Kishore said, “Shubman has always been a prodigy from junior cricket to domestic cricket to India A, IPL and everything. He has always been a prodigy. He has scored a lot of runs and the very reason that he took to captaincy and there is no surprise is that he took it like fish to water. The way he led IPL was very nice and to see him lead in England was another different level because there were a lot of doubts on how India is going to play in England. The way they came out of that series actually gives a lot of confidence not just for the fans but as fellow players as well that we are going in the right direction.”

Kishore also applauded GT head coach Ashish Nehra’s coaching, citing his vast playing experience and game understanding as key factors in uniting and benefiting the Gujarat Titans team. GT won their maiden IPL title under his guidance in the 2022 season.

“I have been a part of GT for the last 4 years, and I would say he is one of the best coaches going around in the country. Also because he has played the sport for so long and he understands the game so well that it is benefiting not just the bowlers in GT but the whole team in general. I think he is the one factor that is keeping the Gujarat Titans team together,” he added.

Nehra served as the bowling coach from January 2018 to 2019, leveraging his expertise to enhance the team’s bowling capabilities. In January 2022, Nehra was appointed head coach of the newly formed franchise, leading them to victory in the 2022 IPL season, where they finished first on the table and defeated Rajasthan Royals in the championship game. You Can’t Bomb The Truth, Bibi!

The Israeli court psychiatrist who examined Eichmann found him a ‘completely normal man, more normal, at any rate, than I am after examining him,’ the implication being that the coexistence of normality and bottomless cruelty explodes our ordinary conceptions and present the true enigma of the trial.
Hannah Arendt, Eichmann in Jerusalem: A Report on the Banality of Evil

Another Nakba seems to be unfolding, now in Gaza city. Do the people of Israel suffer a pinch of guilt, or trauma, at what their nation is so relentlessly doing to the unarmed, innocent people of Gaza, and also in the armed, forcible settlements in the West Bank? Is there a slow and silent paradigm shift happening in the pathologically sick society that is Israel?

It seems so. Just on the margins, perhaps. Some youngsters are refusing to join the IDF. Others are protesting in small numbers, facing police repression. While the last mass protest in Tel Aviv had demanded: the release of hostages and that Benjamin Netanyahu must go. Genocide? Well, that has never been on their mind.

Indeed, Bibi cares a damn for the hostages – he never had. Now, he has bombed Qatar – the principle facilitator for ceasefire and hostage-release. QED.

Majority of them in Israel, since the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, have whole-heartedly backed the mass murder in the Gaza Strip, especially that of children and women, especially that of young mothers and pregnant women, and premature children, dying in the incubators. Or bombed, droned, with their first breath on earth.

These just born – were they all supporters of Hamas?

Did the Israelis enjoy this grotesque spectacle? Yes, most of them did. They still seem to do.

If Israel is a mentally sick society, and if the US, Germany, UK, France, are allies, let’s enter this abyss once again in this daily hell that is the world.

People say, how can they sleep, after doing all this?

This is a question of morality. How can they sleep after doing all that they are doing: the cold-blooded murders of journalists, doctors, paramedics, pregnant women? How can they shoot kids between the eyes? Or, starving kids asking for a loaf of bread?

And, yet, they sleep. Bibi and his men and women. They sleep well. Because, the next morning, they will do the same. Like what Nazi officers like Adolf Eichmann did to 6 million Jews at the gas chambers and concentration camps.

And if, “There is no document of civilization that is not at the same time a document of barbarism,” as philosopher Walter Benjamin wrote – not much has changed in the world. Barbarism continues to be normal.

ALSO READ: Dust On Their Tongues…

It has taken two years for many to call it genocide. Others, including in the big media, still refuse to call it genocide. The latest is that the US, for the sixth time, has vetoed an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza in the Security Council. It is the only nation.

Does Morgan Ortagus, who raised her hand against it, sleep well?

Speaking prior to the vote, she said that Washington’s opposition “will come as no surprise” – as it fails to condemn Hamas or recognize Israel’s right to defend itself, UN News reported. The whole world knows that this is a fake claim, now a morbid cliché, repeated ad infinitum by the Trump administration, as it was by the Joe Biden-Kamala Harris regime led by Democrats.

The majority resolution demanded the release of all hostages held by Hamas, and for Israel to lift all restrictions on the entry of humanitarian aid. It sought to ensure that this aid is safely distributed to the population – in particular by UN agencies and partners.

The draft was put forward by the Council’s 10 non-permanent members: Algeria, Denmark, Greece, Guyana, Pakistan, Panama, Republic of Korea, Sierra Leone, Slovenia and Somalia. “Even though this resolution was not adopted today at this 10,000th meeting of the Council, 14 members of this Council have sent a clear message,” said Danish Ambassador Christina Markus Lassen.

Algerian Ambassador Amar Bendjama said: “Palestinian brothers, Palestinian sisters, forgive us.”

Olga Cherevko, UN spokeswoman, speaking to the BBC, said the situation in Gaza City is “nothing short of cataclysmic”.

The US veto has come days before the UN General Assembly, where the majority of nations recognize Palestinian sovereignty, and it might finally have France and UK recognize it as well – that is after backing the genocide to the hilt. As I write this, thousands are out on the streets in London protesting against Trump’s visit.

Surely, as the main ally of Bibi’s murder machine, he too sleeps well.

And yet, despite the everyday gloom, there are strong signs of hope. The non-stop, ad infinitum, breathless protests across the world, especially in the West.

Celebrities in Hollywood, 3000-plus, are refusing to do anything with Israelis in the film industry. Inside campuses, football stadiums, boulevards, homes and balconies, open-air cafes and auditoriums, international film festivals and concert halls, on sea beaches and parks, outside the Israeli embassy, factories, ports and docks, inside restaurants (while Trump goes for dinner) – some are 500,000 strong – and relentless.

These protests have stormed the world. Ceaseless. Endless.

Dead children are being displayed in bundles everywhere – women and men are crying. Holocaust survivors and orthodox Jews are opposing the killings, prime ministers like that of Spain, are seeking a total boycott of Israel, even in the complicit EU, its president has promised sanctions against Israeli cabinet members, settlers in the West Bank, (and Hamas).

Other countries are declaring sanctions, Zohrab Mamdani has said that if elected Mayor, he will arrest Netanyahu if he comes to New York, even the Right-wing Italian PM has promised to do the same. The spineless Arab conglomerate of American stooges in the Middle East seem to have half-woken up finally – that as and when the Israeli militarily subjugates them – which it will eventually – the US will leave to them to the sharks.

And the Freedom Flottila of 50 ships, with celebrities and freedom fighters, including the son of Nelson Mandela, is almost near Gaza. One of them has been bombed.

Truly, enlightenment, like humanity, is not dead. Bibi might want to become another Adolf Hitler, but he too must meet his fate. While Israel stands isolated, as a Rogue State, hated across the world.

Barbarism will stay, of course, but so will the resistance. And there will always be women and men who shall refuse to succumb, or compromise. The brave too must have their day.

At the sold-out Wembley Arena in London, with the who’s who of global celebrities attending, English actress Florence Pugh said: “Silence in the face of such suffering is not neutrality. It is complicity. And empathy should not be this hard, and it should’ve never been this hard,” said Pugh.

As journalist Mehdi Hasan said in Wembley, in his tribute to the murdered Palestinian journalists in Gaza: “We have been lied to, manipulated, misled, gaslit… Shame on those Western journalists who have said not a word about the mass killing of their Palestinian counterparts. Shame on them.” (Since October 7, 2023, 270 journalists have been murdered in Gaza.)

He said: “As a Western journalist myself, I can tell you all this, the Palestinian journalists, they are the best of us. They are the best of us because they are not just documenting a war, or genocide, they are documenting their own annihilation, their own starvation. In real time… They have shown the world that you can’t bomb the truth away.”

Deepika Padukone Kicks Off Filming For ‘King’ With SRK

While Deepika Padukone may have stepped back from high-profile projects like Kalki 2898 AD, she’s already got something just as exciting in the works.

The actress has officially begun filming for ‘King,’ her sixth collaboration with Shah Rukh Khan. The duo was last seen together in ‘Jawan.’

The ‘Om Shanti Om’ actress, on Saturday, gave fans a glimpse of the first day of the shoot as she shared a candid photo on Instagram, holding Shah Rukh Khan’s hand.

Along with the picture, she also wrote a heartfelt note about what she learned from him nearly “18 years” ago.

“The very first lesson he taught me almost 18 years ago while filming Om Shanti Om was that the experience of making a movie, and the people you make it with, matter far more than its success. I couldn’t agree more and have applied that learning to every decision I’ve made since. And that’s probably why we’re back making our 6th movie together. #king #day1.”

‘King’ will be the sixth time Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone share the screen. From her debut blockbuster ‘Om Shanti Om’ to hits like ‘Chennai Express,’ ‘Happy New Year,’ ‘Pathaan,’ and ‘Jawan,’ the two have never failed to entertain fans.

This comes just days after the actress was officially dropped from another major film: the sequel to Prabhas’ Kalki 2898 AD.

The production house Vyjayanthi Movies took to its X account on Thursday to make the announcement.

In their statement, the makers mentioned that they decided to part ways with Deepika after “careful consideration.”

“This is to officially announce that @deepikapadukone will not be a part of the upcoming sequel to Kalki 2898 AD. After careful consideration, we have decided to part ways. Despite the long journey of making the first film, we were unable to find a partnership. A film like Kalki 2898 AD deserves that commitment and much more. We wish her the best with her future works,” the statement read.

Back in May, there were also reports that she had been replaced in Prabhas’s ‘Spirit,’ another big project directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga. Shortly after, the makers confirmed that Animal actress Triptii Dimri had joined the cast. (ANI)

Multiple Schools Receive Bomb Threat Calls In Delhi

Several schools in various areas of Delhi received bomb threats through phone calls on Saturday morning.

Among the schools that received these threats were DPS Dwarka, Krishna Model Public School, and Sarvodaya Vidyalaya.

As a precaution, students and staff were evacuated from the premises. In response to the threats, police teams and bomb disposal squads were promptly dispatched to the schools.

Additionally, one of the targeted schools, DPS Dwarka, has closed its schools today and postponed the mid-term exams, which were scheduled for the day, citing ‘unavoidable circumstances.’

“Dear Parents Kindly note that the school will remain closed today i.e Saturday, 20 September 2025 due to unavoidable circumstances. All school buses and private vans/ cabs are being sent back immediately. Parents are requested to kindly be there at the stops to pick up their wards. Parents of private commuters must come to pick their wards in case they have dropped them to school. Mid term Exams scheduled for the day stand postponed. Fresh dates will be intimated shortly” stated DPS Dwarka circular.

Searches of the premises are currently underway.

Meanwhile for months, many educational institutes in various parts of the city have received bomb threats. The University College of Medical Sciences in New Delhi received a bomb threat via email on September 9. As soon as the information was received, the college premises were vacated without any panic or noise. Later, the Bomb Disposal Squad conducted a thorough check of the college premises, following which, at 1:30 pm, it was declared safe, and the bomb threat was found to be fake.

Another educational institution, the Maulana Azad Medical College and the Delhi Chief Minister’s Secretariat also received bomb threats on the same day.

According to Delhi Police, the threat received via email indicated a possible detonation at MAMC and the CM Secretariat. DCP Nidhin Valsan stated that the email sent to the dean of MAMC did not contain specific details. However, a bomb squad was later dispatched to the site. (ANI)

Trump Introduces Million-dollar ‘Gold Card’ For US Permanent Residency

The Trump administration has launched a premium immigration programme targeting wealthy individuals worldwide, offering US permanent residency through expensive “Gold Cards” that could generate billions in revenue for the American Treasury.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick announced the initiative on Friday, describing it as a fundamental shift in how America approaches legal immigration by prioritising wealthy applicants who can make substantial financial contributions to the country.

Under the Gold Card programme, individual applicants will pay USD 1 million (approximately Rs 8.5 crore) for permanent residency, while corporations sponsoring employees will pay USD 2 million per person. The programme replaces existing employment-based green card categories EB-1 and EB-2, starting with 80,000 available visas.

“You can prove exceptional value for the United States of America by contributing a million dollars to the United States of America,” Secretary Lutnick explained during a press briefing. “That’s pretty good expectation that they’re highly valuable.”

Gold Card holders will be classified as “privileged permanent residents” with full rights to live and work in the United States permanently, including a pathway to citizenship.

A key requirement of the programme is that Gold Card holders must pay taxes on their worldwide income, similar to US citizens. This means applicants will be taxed by the US government regardless of where their income is earned globally.

“The individual will pay global tax, and they’ll be taxed like an American citizen or a permanent resident,” Lutnick said, noting this requirement may discourage applicants with complex international financial arrangements.

The global tax obligation represents a significant commitment, as the US is one of only a few countries that taxes citizens and permanent residents on worldwide income, potentially subjecting wealthy applicants to double taxation depending on their home country’s tax treaties with the US.

Applicants will undergo what the administration describes as the most intensive vetting process ever implemented for US visas. The screening will cost an additional USD 15,000 per applicant and will be conducted by the Department of Homeland Security and the State Department.

“We’re going to do a much more rigorous vetting than has ever been done before,” Lutnick emphasised, citing the substantially higher fees as justification for enhanced security screening.

The programme specifically excludes individuals with national security concerns or criminal backgrounds, similar to existing green card programmes.

For corporations, the $2 million investment per employee creates a unique retention mechanism. If a sponsored employee leaves the company, the Gold Card becomes invalid unless the new employer has also purchased Gold Cards for their workforce.

“If that person doesn’t have a gold card that they bought for them, they’re going to work with someone else in another country,” Lutnick explained. However, the original sponsoring company retains ownership of the card and can transfer it to a new employee after paying additional vetting and transfer fees.

The administration also outlined plans for a “Trump Platinum Card” programme requiring congressional approval and costing $5 million. Unlike the Gold Card, this programme would not offer permanent residency or a path to citizenship, and holders would only pay US taxes on American-sourced income.

The Platinum programme is expected to allow holders to stay in the US for more than the current 120-day annual limit for certain visa categories, though specific terms await congressional action.

The administration projects the Gold Card programme will generate over $100 billion for the US Treasury, while the future Platinum programme could bring in $1 trillion. These figures assume significant uptake among wealthy individuals worldwide seeking US residency.

Implementation is expected within one month, with other green card categories likely suspended during the rollout. A dedicated website, trumpcard.gov, will handle applications.

The programme represents a dramatic shift from traditional employment-based immigration, which has historically focused on skills and job market needs rather than wealth. Critics may argue it creates a “pay-to-play” system for US residency, while supporters contend it ensures immigrants contribute substantially to the American economy.

For wealthy Indians considering US residency, the programme offers a potentially faster route than existing investor visa programmes, though the global tax requirement and substantial upfront costs may limit appeal to those with significant international business interests.

The Gold Card programme joins other recent Trump administration immigration initiatives aimed at generating revenue while reducing overall immigration numbers through higher barriers to entry. (ANI)
