Prabhas, Triptii Dimri’s ‘Spirit’ To Hit Theatres On This Date

The much-awaited film Spirit, directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga and starring Prabhas, has finally locked its release date after months of buzz and debate surrounding the project.

Director Sandeep Reddy Vanga took to X on Friday evening to announce that Spirit will arrive in theatres on March 5, 2027.

Take a look

The release date follows the unveiling of the first-look poster featuring Triptii Dimri and Prabhas, which was shared on New Year’s Day. Earlier, during the New Year, Prabhas had shared the first-look poster of the film, which quickly went viral on social media.

The poster shared by the makers earlier showed Prabhas standing shirtless with his back to the camera. He had visible bruises and wounds, with bandages tied around his shoulder, back, and hands. With long hair, a thick beard, and a moustache, many fans said his look reminded them of Ranbir Kapoor from Vanga’s earlier film Animal. Triptii Dimri is also seen in the poster besides Prabhas as he holds a glass in his hands.

Along with the poster, Prabhas added a caption that read, “Here’s the first poster of #Spirit.”

The film also features Vivek Oberoi in a key role. It is being produced by Bhushan Kumar’s T-Series, in collaboration with Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Bhadrakali Pictures.

Earlier, on Prabhas’s birthday in October last year, Vanga had shared the film’s audio teaser in Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam. That teaser also confirmed that Prakash Raj and Vivek Oberoi are part of the cast.

Initially, Deepika Padukone was supposed to play the female lead in the film. However, due to scheduling conflicts, she left the project, which eventually led to Triptii Dimri being cast in the role. (ANI)

‘This Battle Is Not Over…’: Shiv Sena (UBT) Reacts After BMC Loss

Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) (UBT) on Saturday gave its first reaction following the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, striking a defiant tone and signalling that the political fight in Maharashtra is far from over and will continue until the Marathi community receives the respect it deserves.

In a post shared on social media platform X, Shiv Sena (UBT) said, “This battle is not over yet… It will continue just like this until the Marathi person receives the respect they deserve!”

Meanwhile, the BMC elections saw the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) alliance emerge as the single largest bloc, while the Shiv Sena (UBT) and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) alliance also secured a significant share of seats and votes across Mumbai.

According to official figures released by the Election Commission and the BMC, the BJP won 89 seats, polling 11,79,273 votes, which accounts for 21.58 per cent of the total votes cast. Among all winning candidates, the BJP’s vote share stands at 45.22 per cent, making it the single largest party in the civic body. Its alliance partner, the Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction), secured 29 seats with 2,73,326 votes, translating into 5.00 per cent of the total vote share.

Together, the BJP-Shiv Sena (Shinde) alliance emerged as the largest bloc in the BMC.

On the other side, the Shiv Sena (UBT), contesting in alliance with the MNS, won 65 seats. The UBT-led Sena polled 7,17,736 votes, accounting for 13.13 per cent of the total votes cast. The MNS added 6 seats to the alliance tally, with 74,946 votes and a 1.37 per cent vote share.

The Indian National Congress (INC) secured 24 seats, polling 2,42,646 votes, which represents 4.44 per cent of the total vote share.

Among other parties, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) won 8 seats with 68,072 votes, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) secured 3 seats, the Samajwadi Party won 2 seats, and the NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) won 1 seat.

Overall, winning candidates from recognised political parties polled 26,07,612 votes, amounting to 47.72 per cent of the total votes cast. The total number of votes polled in the election stood at 54,64,412, while 11,677 voters opted for NOTA.

While Uddhav and Raj Thackeray tried to consolidate votes over the Marathi language and the revival of the Marathi manoos identity plank, the saffron Yuti’s development work, including the Metro Aqua Line and Coastal Road, helped them gain a lead in the BMC polls.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the BJP-Shiv Sena-led victory in the Maharashtra civic polls, attributing the win to the “pro-people good governance” agenda. Expressing gratitude to the electors, PM Modi said that the NDA’s “vision for development has struck a chord” with the people of the state.

Addressing the BJP workers at the party office in Mumbai, Devendra Fadnavis said, “BJP and Mahayuti are going to form their 25 mayors after these elections.” (ANI)

NCERT, Delhi Police Seize 32,000 Pirated Books In Major Crackdown

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), in coordination with the Crime Branch of Delhi Police, assisted in a major crackdown on the illegal printing of pirated NCERT textbooks.

Acting on specific inputs, the Crime Branch of Delhi Police conducted a raid at a printing facility in Village Jawli, Loni, Ghaziabad (U.P.).

During the operation, around 32,000 pirated NCERT textbooks of various classes and subjects were seized. The police also recovered two printing machines, aluminium printing plates, paper rolls, and printing ink, indicating large-scale unauthorised printing.

The action was initiated on the basis of inputs developed during an earlier case registered vide FIR No. 336/2025 dated November 11, 2025, by the Crime Branch of the Delhi Police, under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Copyright Act, 1957.

Officials from NCERT’s Publication Division were present during the raid and seizure proceedings and provided technical assistance for the identification and verification of pirated material.

NCERT reiterated that unauthorised printing, distribution, or sale of NCERT textbooks is a punishable offence under law. Such activities not only violate copyright but also adversely affect students and the education system by circulating substandard and incorrect content.

Members of the public are encouraged to purchase NCERT textbooks only from authorised sources and to report any suspected cases of piracy to NCERT or local authorities.

Meanwhile, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) is likely to be granted deemed-to-be-university status by the end of January, sources in the Ministry of Education said.

According to sources, the groundwork for granting the status has been completed, and the University Grants Commission (UGC) will hold a meeting to decide.

“The preparation has been done. The UGC has to hold a meeting to make a decision. We are hopeful that once the next meeting takes place, the update will come by the end of the month,” a source said. (ANI)

Mamata Accuses BJP Of Violence Against Migrant Workers

West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee on Friday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) double-engine government of violence against migrant workers in their respective states. Her remarks come amid rising reports of mob lynching incidents in Bihar.

Banerjee highlighted the alleged death of a worker in Bihar, stating, “One person was beaten to death in Bihar yesterday. Migrant workers are being tortured every day wherever there is the BJP’s double-engine government”.

She sharply accused the BJP-led goverment for these cases, claiming, “They are killing our people. Nothing could be worse than this”.

CM Mamata Banerjee also attended an event that laid the foundation stone for the proposed Mahakal Temple in Siliguri and levelled similar accusations against the BJP during her address.

The Chief Minister asserted that workers from West Bengal are often being specifically targeted for merely speaking Bengali.

“Bengali-speaking migrant workers are being tortured in BJP-ruled states. Migrant workers are living peacefully in West Bengal without any harassment. Why are Bengali-speaking workers being targeted elsewhere?… They are beaten up in Assam, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, or Bihar,” she accused.

She highlighted that violence has no connection to religion, emphasising her point by citing Mahatma Gandhi’s words.

“Beating people is not religion. Giving life is religion. Life is about doing good, virtuous deeds for as long as we live, just as Gandhiji said, ‘Ishwar Allah Tere Naam, Sabko Sanmati De Bhagwan’,” she stated.

Meanwhile, the Bihar State Minority Commission earlier this month took strict cognisance of the increasing incidents of mob lynching in the state and directed the appointment of a senior police officer as a nodal officer in every district to maintain a peaceful environment.

In Patna, the Commission expressed deep concern over the tragic and worrying reports of mob lynching frequently emerging from the state and demanded prompt and effective action from the state government. In this regard, the Commission Chairman, Maulana Ghulam Rasool Balyawi, sent a letter to the Chief Secretary of the Government of Bihar and the Director General of Police.

According to the Commission, viral videos on social media and news published in various newspapers and channels make it clear that in several districts of Bihar, mobs are targeting people for violence based on rumours and religious identity by labelling them as “Bangladeshis,” which is highly condemnable. Gujarat – Some Bottled Up Issues

In Gujarat, the Western Indian bastion of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his number two, Amit Shah, pragmatism is overriding prohibition, and ideals are being set aside, cautiously and gently, to introduce alcohol by law. But certainly, not all the way.

Despite the political and ideological changes and the inevitable shifts in values over the years, Gujarat cannot forsake Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy. Its greatest son once sought a complete ban on alcohol consumption across India, even if it meant, in his words, being a “dictator for a day.”

Gujarat is where Modi, in a calmer era of one-to-one diplomacy, hosted both Donald Trump and Xi Jinping. It has also emerged as an economic powerhouse, hosting several international gatherings, sports events and bidding to host the Olympic Games. How does Prohibition, or abstinence from alcohol, it is realised, fit into this global quest?

A new law, which tweaks the existing one, was introduced in December 2023 to attract investors to the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City), envisioned as a global financial hub near Ahmedabad. Although not the sole reason, major international corporations such as JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley, IBM, Oracle, and Google have established their presence or operations in the area, contributing to the city’s overall growth.

GIFT City is a smart city and the first operational International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) in India, spanning 880 acres along the Sabarmati River. It is designed to be a global financial and IT hub located between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar.

The signals were coming fast and clear. “After a hard day’s work, what does one wish for? A good drink, and maybe to watch a game of football,” a visiting foreign diplomat mused as his government made significant investments. In 2022, the Singapore High Commissioner to India, Simon Wong, described GIFT City as a “ghost town after working hours”.

But socially, accepting the change has not been easy. Gujarat is where an individual is judged thus: “He is a good man, but you know, he drinks!” This co-exists with a well-earned reputation that alcohol is available to all, rich or poor, and is a thriving business. Prohibition sustains, but so too does corruption.

ALSO READ: Can Prohibition Tip Scales In Bihar Politics?

Remember the film Raees (2017), about a bootlegger, played by Shah Rukh Khan? Of course, like the real-life character on which the film is based, he has to be shot dead. Gujarat, also predominantly vegetarian (although disputed, and claimed to be an estimate based largely on the upper castes), enjoys this message.

Prohibition remains part of the Indian Constitution’s Directive Principles of State Policy, to be cherished and enforced. Left to the states (provinces) to implement, it respects the federal nature of a vast country and its diverse faiths and cultures. Perhaps, framers of the Constitution were also being pragmatic, realising that alcohol had been consumed down the ages.

While some others have tried and given up, Gujarat is one of the only two states that are ‘dry’ today. The story of the larger and more populous Bihar, a recent convert, is strikingly similar – millions spent to enforce the law and many more millions of deemed revenue lost. Corruption is inbuilt. Both the bootleggers and the authorities are supposed to check them, thrive.

Casualties due to ‘poisonous’ alcohol made from chemicals, particularly methyl alcohol, are rampant. Porous interstate borders make smuggling easy. All this and human nature dictate what is, putting bluntly, demand and supply.

The poor are the victims. Social tensions are inevitable, and they are across India – of indebtedness and domestic violence. Women’s protests do not go beyond demonstrations. They receive promises from the authorities that are rarely kept. Sympathetic media do get angry when politicians or their wards are caught for “drunken driving”, after killing poor pavement dwellers. The incidence is rising as India gets urbanised, and the rich drive the growing number of big cars.

Gujarat’s paradox is more glaring since it follows Prohibition, or rather, cannot give it up: 82 lakh liquor bottles worth ₹144 crore were seized in 2024. In Ahmedabad, police say a bottle of liquor is seized every other minute.

Gujarat has even tried the death penalty. A BBC report on December 6, 2011, stated that Governor Kamala Beniwal withheld her assent on a bill passed by the legislature for two years because it lacked this provision. She signed only after the federal government’s approval. As of now, no individual has been hanged.

A cursory look at media reports in Gujarat indicates that the incidence of deaths due to hooch may have come down since 2022, or is being played down. But the booze business is booming.

This persistence reflects a complex interplay of demand, enforcement challenges, and socio-economic factors. While stricter policing is commendable, social scientists say, addressing root causes such as public awareness and alternative livelihoods for those involved in bootlegging is crucial for sustainable change. What is essential, but absent, is a balance between the state’s prohibition ideals and practical realities.

Of the new GIFT-confined law, neither support nor criticism is loud, since the decision supposedly came “from the top.” The set of rules, temporary and with riders, is business-friendly. Business is not a sin, after all.

Six decades back, in a report dated February 16, 1964, culled out from the New York Times archives, Thomas S. Brady had rightly predicted: “As anywhere else, law enforcement depends not only on consent but on approval of the governed. Murder and stealing are threats to everybody, and they can be held to a minimum. But tippling, despite Gandhi, is another matter and seems to be here to stay, inside or outside the law.”

Amidst this unending debate, there is a general realisation, resignedly, that the policy, with more cons than pros, has failed. What is Gujarat doing? Being pragmatic, simple. But who knows the future?

Pakistan’s Election Commission (ECP) on Friday suspended the membership of 152 legislators from the National Assembly, Senate and provincial assemblies for failing to submit their statements of assets and liabilities within the prescribed deadline, Dawn reported.

The commission directed that “they shall cease to function as members with immediate effect until such statements are submitted by them,” the report said, citing an ECP statement.

Dawn further reported that last year, the ECP suspended the membership of 139 lawmakers for not submitting their annual asset statements. (ANI)

Engineer Rashid Urges Jaishankar For Immediate Evacuation Of Kashmiri Students From Iran

Amid unrest in Iran, Jammu and Kashmir Awami Itihaad Party (AIP) MP Sheikh Abdul Rashid, aka Engineer Rashid, has written a letter to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, seeking his urgent intervention for the rescue and safe evacuation of Kashmiri students from the Islamic Republic.

Earlier, the MEA issued an advisory urging Indian citizens to avoid travel to Iran until further notice and asked those already in Iran to leave immediately via available commercial flights.

Rashid, lodged in Tihar Jail since 2019 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for alleged terror funding, has expressed concern in the letter over the safety of students and urged EAM Jaishankar for immediate evacuation, party spokesperson Inam Un Nabi said on Friday.

“This is with reference to rescuing hundreds of Kashmiri, mostly students, from various parts of Iran where the situation has deteriorated drastically, and uncertainty unfortunately seems unending,” Rashid wrote in the letter.

Engineer Rashid further conveyed the distress of students’ families back home, stating, “The families & relatives are very much worried about the fate & safety of their beloved ones… The concerns are genuine, the threat seems real, and your intervention is the only hope for the families.”

“Please treat this letter as an ‘SOS’ call on behalf of the trapped Kashmiris & ensure their safety, including evacuation from various parts of Iran, before it gets too late,” the letter added.

Party spokesperson Inam Un Nabi added that AIP is ready to provide any assistance required to families in Kashmir for coordination and support.

This call for evacuation comes amid the rising unrest in Iran, with ongoing protests over rising living costs, and authorities imposing internet restrictions.

According to sources, the MEA is preparing to facilitate the return of Indian nationals from Iran amid the evolving situation there.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday also spoke to External Affairs Minister Jaishankar, who assured him that steps will be taken to safeguard the interests and lives of students and other people from Jammu and Kashmir who are in Iran now.

The Chief Minister informed that the EAM shared the plans that the ministry is currently working on.

“Just spoke to EAM @DrSJaishankar ji about the evolving situation in Iran. He shared his assessment of the ground situation & the plans that the External Affairs Ministry is working on,” the CM wrote in a post on X.

He further expressed his gratitude after Jaishankar assured the safety of people from Jammu and Kashmir stuck in Iran amid turmoil. “I’m grateful for his assurance that all steps will be taken to safeguard the interests & lives of students & other people from J&K who are in Iran now,” he stated.

On Wednesday, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar received a telephone call from Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi. The two leaders discussed the evolving situation in and around Iran.
