At major events, especially the Oscars, celebrities have often used the platform to highlight important global issues alongside celebrating cinema. At the 98th Academy Awards, actor Javier Bardem did the same.

As reported by Variety, before announcing the nominees, Javier said, “No to war and free Palestine,” which earned a big round of applause from the audience at the show.

Earlier, on the red carpet of the Emmy awards this season, Bardem spoke to Variety, expressing solidarity with Palestine

“Here I am today, denouncing the genocide in Gaza,” he said. “I am talking about the IAGS, the International Association of Genocide Scholars, who study thoroughly genocide and has declared it is a genocide. That’s why we ask for a commercial and diplomatic blockade and also sanctions on Israel to stop the genocide. Free Palestine.”

At Oscars ceremony, the F1 star also sported a pin with the word “Palestine” on it and a placard that read: “No a la Guerra” (No to the war). (ANI)

Bangladesh To Import 45,000 Tonnes Of Diesel From India

Bangladesh will import an additional 45,000 tons of diesel from India by April, an official said on Sunday.

“Recently, 5,000 tons of diesel arrived in Bangladesh from India, and we will receive another 5,000 tons around the 18th or 19th of March in Bangladesh from India”, Md. Murshed Hossain Azad, General Manager (Commercial & Operations) of Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) told ANI over the phone.

“We have received a proposal to import an additional 40,000 tons of diesel from India. Once the procedural work is completed–that is, the opening of the LC and other formalities–this 40,000 tons of diesel will also arrive in Bangladesh by April,” he added.

Between India and Bangladesh, diesel was previously imported from India by train wagons until the India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline was launched. Then, in March 2023, the then Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, and the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, inaugurated this Bangladesh-India Friendship Pipeline, and since then, diesel has been imported from India through this pipeline.

Through this pipeline, diesel is imported regularly from the Indian state company Numaligarh Refinery Limited to the Parbatipur depot in Bangladesh via the Bangladesh-India Friendship Pipeline.

The previous interim government in Bangladesh, led by Mohammad Yunus, had halted the import of diesel from India via this pipeline. However, after the election, when Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s government assumed power, in the past few days, the import of diesel again resumed through this pipeline with 5,000 tons.

Due to conflict in West Asia, large crowds gathered at various petrol and fuel pumps to get fuel for motorcycles and vehicles. To control this panic buying, the government had imposed a rationing on sales. That restriction has now been lifted by the government.

The Muslim community considers the biggest festival in Bangladesh to be the holy Eid. On this occasion, so that people can easily travel from the major cities to their village homes and celebrate Eid with relatives and family, the government has lifted the rationing on fuel sales. (ANI)

Earthquake Of Magnitude 4.5 Strikes Myanmar

An earthquake of magnitude 4.5 struck Myanmar on Sunday, a statement by the National Center for Seismology (NCS) said.

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 107km.

In a post on X, the NCS said, “EQ of M: 4.5, On: 15/03/2026 16:33:04 IST, Lat: 24.50 N, Long: 95.01 E, Depth: 107 Km, Location: Myanmar.”

Earlier on Saturday, another earthquake of magnitude 4.4 struck the region at a depth of 90km.

In a post on X, NCS said, “EQ of M: 4.4, On: 14/03/2026 09:28:24 IST, Lat: 23.37 N, Long: 97.52 E, Depth: 90 Km, Location: Myanmar.”

Earthquakes can occur anywhere between the Earth’s surface and about 700 kilometres below the surface. For scientific purposes, this earthquake depth range of 0 – 700 km is divided into three zones: shallow, intermediate, and deep, as per USGS data.

Shallow earthquakes are between 0 and 70 km deep; intermediate earthquakes, 70 – 300 km deep; and deep earthquakes, 300 – 700 km deep. In general, the term “deep-focus earthquakes” is applied to earthquakes deeper than 70 km, the USGS states.

Myanmar is vulnerable to hazards from moderate and large magnitude earthquakes and tsunamis along its long coastline. Myanmar is wedged between four tectonic plates (the Indian, Eurasian, Sunda, and Burma plates) that interact in active geological processes.

A 1400-kilometre transform fault runs through Myanmar and connects the Andaman spreading centre to a collision zone in the north called the Sagaing Fault.

The Sagaing Fault increases the seismic hazard for Sagaing, Mandalay, Bago, and Yangon, which together represent 46 per cent of Myanmar’s population.

Although Yangon is relatively far from the fault trace, it still suffers from significant risk due to its dense population. For instance, in 1903, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake in Bago also struck Yangon. (ANI)

‘India’s Strategic Neutrality Safeguards Our Interests In War Situations’

Abhay Singh, an ICSSR Doctoral Fellow in Banaras Hindu University, says India’s multi-alignment foreign policy insulates it from global crises. His views:

In recent years, India has emphasized strengthening its relations with countries around the world and multilateral engagement. Furthermore, India has demonstrated its strategic neutrality in various conflicts between other countries, neither openly supporting nor openly condemning any side. This is the reason that through its foreign policy, even in various conflicts in the world, India has ensured the safe evacuation of its citizens and protected its national interests by fulfilling the needs of civil security and energy without any pressure.

In the current geopolitical landscape—particularly amidst the on-going conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States in West Asia and the Gulf region—India has steadfastly maintained its strategic neutrality, prioritizing its national interests above all else. India has adopted a balanced and cautious diplomatic stance regarding this conflict. India has refrained from openly supporting any specific side; instead, it has emphasized dialogue, restraint, and diplomatic resolution. This approach reflects the core tenet of India’s foreign policy: Strategic Autonomy.

Currently, India has placed particular emphasis on safeguarding the security of Indians residing in West Asia—specifically in the Gulf nations—as well as on securing the country’s energy requirements.

Throughout this conflict, India has accorded top priority to the safety of the large Indian population residing in countries such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Oman—a demography consisting predominantly of migrant workers.

It was for this very reason that, following the retaliatory bombardment of these nations by Iran in response to US attacks, Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself personally engaged with the heads of state of all these Gulf countries to ensure, first and foremost, the safety of the Indians living there. India initiated dialogue with Iran on other levels only after ensuring the safety of Indians residing in these countries and the safe repatriation of those returning from there.

India sources a significant portion of its energy requirements from various countries in West Asia. A major share of global oil trade passes through the Strait of Hormuz, making it of paramount importance to India. In addition to crude oil, India imports 60 per cent of its LPG requirements—90 per cent of which traverses this very Strait of Hormuz.

Consequently, the security of energy supplies and maritime trade routes constitutes a key priority for India. This is precisely why India has maintained engagement with Iran at various levels; even amidst the on-going conflict—during which numerous incidents have unfolded in the Strait of Hormuz—India has successfully leveraged its diplomatic channels to ensure the safety of vessels transporting energy supplies to the country.

This conflict constitutes a major test for India’s diplomacy—a realm in which India has historically managed its relations with Iran, Israel, and the Arab nations distinctively, operating on multiple levels simultaneously. In this critically important region, India positions itself as a responsible power committed to fostering regional stability and peace.

It is for this reason that, in the context of the Iran–US–Israel conflict, India has adopted a balanced and pragmatic approach; while scrupulously avoiding complete alignment with any single party, it has prioritized dialogue and diplomatic solutions.

Consequently, at a time when other nations across the globe appear to be grappling with the various global repercussions stemming from this conflict, India is proving successful in its diplomatic endeavours by steadfastly safeguarding its national interests—a success exemplified by the safe evacuation of Indian vessels from Iran and the continued safety of Indian nationals residing in the Gulf nations.

Amit Slams Rahul Over AI Summit Protest

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday condemned Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi’s actions during a protest at Makar Dwar in Parliament over the LPG shortage, accusing the latter of “defaming” the country and its institutions.

Addressing a public rally in Guwahati, Shah said, “Sometimes he (Rahul Gandhi) sits at the door of Parliament and eats tea and pakoras. Does he not realise what an appropriate venue for having breakfast is? The Parliament is the highest institution of our democracy. Even sitting there and protesting is not a democratic practice. But you have gone two steps beyond protesting. You are having tea and pakoras. This is defaming India across the world.”

On March 12, Rahul Gandhi joined a protest at the Makar Dwar entrance to Parliament. Photos and videos went viral showing him casually sharing tea and snacks with colleagues.

BJP MP Nishikant Dubey has submitted a notice to the Lok Sabha Speaker along with a pen drive containing material related to the incident stating that such actions “lowered the dignity” of the Parliament.

Shah also tore into the opposition over their youth wing’s shirtless protest at the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi.

Addressing the public, Shah reaffirmed the opposition’s right to protest but condemned them for protesting at the AI Summit, which he said was a global platform to strengthen India, not a place to get involved in “personal politics”.

Shah said that Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, in his opposition to the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has started opposing India.

“Congress has tried to defame the country by removing clothes at the AI Summit. We are all in politics. We were also in opposition, but there’s a place for it. You made the summit a platform for personnel politics, where the whole world gathered to see India, invest in India,” he said.

“I want to tell Rahul Gandhi that in your opposition of Narendra Modi and the BJP, you have started to oppose India. Instead of apologising, Rahul Gandhi said that the Congress workers who have protested half-nakedly are lion-hearted. I don’t think any responsible political party will do that,” he added.

Amit Shah further challenged Congress to oppose the BJP “with all their might”, but criticised them for “narrowing the possibilities” of Indian youth by demonstrating in such a manner on a global platform.

“He (Rahul Gandhi) is defaming India and its democracy in front of the world. You can oppose us, oppose us with all your might, but you run away in Parliament. But where the whole world comes to see India’s youth strength, there you are narrowing their possibilities. India’s public will not forgive you,” he said.

He then condemned both protests, stating, “I don’t believe anyone in the country would support this kind of activism.”

Shah inaugurated and laid foundation stones for major health projects across Assam.

He inaugurated the newly constructed Pragjyotishpur Medical College & Hospital in Guwahati as well as cancer centres in Golaghat and Tinsukia.

Additionally, the Union Home Minister virtually laid the foundation stones for super-speciality hospitals at the Diphu, Jorhat, and Barpeta Medical College & Hospitals. He also laid the foundation stone for the Swasthya Bhawan at Sixmile in Guwahati and for the Abhayapuri District Hospital. (ANI)
