China Spy Balloon

US Shoots Down Suspected Chinese Spy Balloon

The United States has shot down a Chinese spy balloon over the Atlantic Ocean, CNN reported citing a US official. US President Joe Biden had approved shooting down the balloon and was supported by military officials, as per the news report.

Recovery efforts were being made off the coast of the Carolinas where the suspected Chinese spy balloon was shot down by the US military, according to a US official. The balloon was first spotted in the sky over Montana earlier this week, travelling across the middle of the country, before it exited the continental United States on Saturday.
Before the balloon was shot down, the Federal Aviation Administration issued a ground stop for airports in Wilmington in North Carolina, Charleston in South Carolina and Myrtle Beach in South Carolina. The Federal Aviation Administration extended the ground stop until 5:15 p.m. (local time) for three airports in the Carolinas after the US shot down a suspected Chinese spy balloon, CNN reported citing an official.

Earlier, the FAA had issued a ground stop for airports from 12:45 pm to 2:45 pm (local time) to support the US Department of Defence in “national security efforts.” However, it later extended the ground stop till 3:30 pm (local time). Top military officials had warned against shooting down the balloon as the debris could pose a threat to people and property on the ground.

Earlier, US President Joe Biden said that his administration will “take care” of the suspected Chinese spy balloon, as per the news report. He made the remarks at an airfield in Syracuse in New York, where he is visiting a family. When questioned whether he would shoot down the balloon, Biden said, “We’re gonna take care of it,” according to CNN.

Meanwhile, the Chinese Foreign Ministry has said that the balloon entered US airspace by accident. However, the US State Department called the presence of the balloon in US territory a “clear violation” of their sovereignty and international law. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken also postponed his visit to China after the balloon was spotted in the United States. (ANI)

Centre To Ban 138 Betting Apps, 94 Loan Apps With Chinese Links

Centre To Ban 138 Betting Apps, 94 Loan Apps With Chinese Links

In a major crackdown, the Central government has initiated the process to ban and block 138 betting apps and 94 loan lending apps with Chinese links on an ‘urgent’ and ’emergency’ basis, top government sources said on Sunday.

Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) is learnt to have taken the decision based on the recommendations of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
As per sources, the MHA recommended the MeitY this week to ban and block these apps, and the Ministry subsequently initiated the process as per communication.

The move was taken after confirming that these apps attract Section 69 of the IT Act as they contain material which is prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India.

The action behind the move is based on several complaints of extortion and harassment of common people who had availed small amounts of loans through the mobile apps being run by those entities and persons.

It is learnt that these apps are the brainchild of Chinese nationals who hired Indians and made them directors in operation.

As per inputs, desperate individuals are lured into taking on a loan and then jacked up the interest by up to 3,000 per cent annually.

When the debtors were unable to repay the interest, let alone the entire loan, individuals representing these apps started harassing those in debt.

They sent them lewd messages, threatening to release their morphed photos and shaming them with messages to their contacts.

The matter came into the spotlight after a spate of suicides, particularly in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, by those who opted for such loans or lost money to betting apps.

States like Telangana, Odisha and Uttar Pradesh as well as central intelligence agencies had then asked the Union Home Ministry to take action against these apps, sources said.

Based on these inputs, the MHA started analysing 28 Chinese loan lending apps six months ago. However, they found that 94 apps are available on e-stores and that others are working through third-party links.

It is learnt that many apps are now not available to download on smartphones but sources say the betting apps and games are being downloaded through independent links or websites.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) issued an advisory, stating that since betting and gambling are illegal in most parts of the country, advertisements of these betting platforms, as well as their surrogates, are also illegal under the provisions of the Consumer Protection Act 2019, Cable TV Network Regulation Act 1995 and the IT Rules, 2021. Killing Of Naba Das Shows Lawlessness In Odisha: Pradhan

Killing Of Naba Das Shows Lawlessness In Odisha: Pradhan

BJP leader and Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Sunday alleged that the killing of Odisha minister Naba Das by a policeman “shows lawlessness in the state”.

Naba Das was shot at by a policeman in Brajarajnagar in the Jharsuguda district on January 29, and succumbed to his bullet injuries in Bhubaneswar hospital on the same day.
“DGP’s statement that Lord Jagannath could anticipate an incident such as the killing of a minister’ shows lawlessness in the state. The Crime Branch is probing into the matter, but there is no clarity in inquiry,” Pradhan said.

Addressing the media, Director General of Police (DGP) Sunil Bansal had said: “There are certain incidents which are unprecedented and unimaginable. Only Lord Jagannath could anticipate such an unprecedented incident in Odisha’s Jharsuguda.”

“We have suo moto requested High Court to appoint a judge to monitor the investigation to ensure that no questions are raised about the scope and the intensity of the investigation. Some very important clues have been identified in the investigation and I am very satisfied with it,” he said on Friday.

He further said that such a “complicated” case is bound to take time and one should not jump to a conclusion as it involves a sitting police personnel fired upon a sitting cabinet minister.

“I am sure the way the investigation is being conducted by the topmost officers of Odisha Police and now we have the guidance of retired HC judge, all the angles are considered, but no timeline can be given as it is a complicated case where a sitting police officer has fired at the sitting cabinet minister,” he said.

Notably on Thursday, the special investigating team (SIT) probing minister Naba Das’ murder recovered handwritten notes of accused ASI Gopal Das from a septic tank of Jharsuguda Airport police station.

The CID and Crime Branch team in a statement said that the accused ASI during questioning revealed that he threw handwritten notes in a septic tank of the toilet of Jharsunguda Airport police station and that he had noted down his motives behind the crime in detail on the paper.

The recovered pieces of handwritten papers will be sent to forensics and handwriting experts for the reconstruction of evidence and further examination, the Crime Branch said.

The preserved viscera of the deceased have also been sent to the State Forensic Science Laboratory (SFSL), Rasulgarh in Bermuda Biological Station for Research (BBSR) for chemical examination and opinion, it said.

The Scientific Officer and Ballistic Experts also recovered one fired bullet during inspecting the vehicle and the crime spot using a FARO 3-D Scanner.

A medical team led by DSP and CID Crime Branch at Berhampur is verifying the accused’s medical treatment records and financial behaviour.

Accused Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Gopal Das had confessed to his crime, the police informed on January 30.

His wife Jayanti Das on January 29 claimed that Gopal Das has been suffering mental disorder for the last eight years and was on medication, doing fine. (ANI)

L-G Appointment Of Aldermen In MCD

Delhi L-G Approves Revival Of 126 Vacant Posts

Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, VK Saxena on Saturday approved the revival of 126 posts of Principal/Deputy Education Officers that had lapsed due to apathy and inaction of Aam Admi Party government and were lying vacant for more than two years, an official statement from the L-G’s office said on Saturday

An official said that this move would help the woefully short-staffed Education Department of GNCTD, especially at the cutting-edge level.
According to an official, L-G has also put on hold a proposal to abolish 244 posts of Principal / Deputy Education Officer as proposed by the Education Department, since the said posts had also been lying vacant for more than five years.

“The LG has asked Education Department to submit a suitable proposal for the abolition/creation of posts of Principal / Deputy Education Officer after getting the comprehensive study conducted from the AR Department, as pointed out by the Services Department,” it said.

It may be noted that Government Rules provide for posts lying vacant for more than two years to be considered as “deemed abolished” and for those lying vacant for more than five years to be “considered abolished”. These 370 posts (126 deemed abolished posts and 244 considered abolished posts), were supposed to have been filled in through promotion as per the Recruitment Rules, by the Directorate of Education from the year 2013-14 to 2019, it added.

“However, in what speaks extremely negative of the functioning of the Education Department, none of these posts were filled through promotion and were allowed to remain vacant, thereby inviting provisions for abolishing them,” the statement informed.

With regards to the proposal for the abolition of 244 posts of Principal, “the Services Department had advised the AR Department to carry out a comprehensive study in one go while noting that the post of a Principal is a crucial post for the functioning of Education Department and in this way, the exercise of abolition/creation of posts need not be taken up time and again,” it added.

However, despite the observations of the Services Department, the Directorate of Education moved the proposal for the abolition of 244 posts of Principals, it informed.

“But even as the Education Department still requires the posts of Principals / Deputy Education Officers, abolition of these 244 posts might create unrest amongst the feeder cadre and the employees of the Education Department fearing loss of promotion avenues as the orders for abolition of these 244 posts will not reflect the true picture,” it added. Expanding Trade Using Indian Rupee Part Of Nation's Recovery Strategy With India: Sri Lanka Envoy

Expanding Trade Using Indian Rupee Part Of Nation’s Recovery Strategy With India: Sri Lanka Envoy

Sri Lanka High Commissioner to India, Milinda Moragoda on Saturday said that the island nation is expanding its trade with India using Indian Rupee as part of Colombo’s economic recovery strategy with New Delhi.

The envoy highlighted that India acted quickly during the Sri Lanka crisis and assisted the country with USD3.9 Billion.
“We might not have got financial aid this quickly if India hadn’t helped. India also played a key part in getting support for Sri Lanka,” the High Commissioner said.

Speaking on the occasion of the 75th independence of Sri Lanka, the High Commissioner said that the island nation is mulling the possibility of using the RuPay mechanism for Indian tourists coming to Colombo.

In an exclusive interview with ANI, the Sri Lankan envoy said that the country is also looking forward to using the RuPay mechanism.

“Expanding the trade through Indian Rupee is part of our recovery strategy with India. We’re also looking at the possibility of using the RuPay mechanism so it will be easy for Indian tourists coming to Sri Lanka,” he told ANI.

He said that the ties between the island nation and India goes back to 1,000 years and the first representative was sent to India 80 years back.

Speaking on the Sri Lankan and Indian fishermen issue, the High Commissioner said that the two countries must have a dialogue, adding that there are legal, environmental and ecological issues that are crucial and needed to be discussed.

Time and again, there have been periodic instances of Indian fishermen being apprehended by Sri Lankan authorities for allegedly crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line and fishing in Sri Lankan waters.

He also said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has invited Sri Lankan President Wickremesinghe to visit India.

“PM Modi has extended a formal invitation to Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe to visit India. We hope that he will be able to come to India soon,” he told ANI.

On the security concerns, the High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to India, Milinda Moragoda said that Colombo’s security is New Delhi’s too and vice versa and both nations should look after each other.

“India’s security is our security and our security is India’s. We have to look after our neighbourhood. We have a large number of ships coming in from India. Irrespective of what the threat is, we need to protect each other,” he added.

He also highlighted the importance of the Jaffna Cultural Centre opening and called it a ‘symbolic’ act by India.

“I am happy, it is one of the beautiful buildings and it stands out, the High Commissioner said.

The island country, which is under an economic crisis witnessed widespread protests in March last year that forced Gotabaya Rajapaksa to resign as President and brought Ranil Wickremesinghe to power.

Milinda Moragoda has repeatedly emphasized that India could play a significant role in Sri Lanka’s economic revival through multifaceted economic integration between the two countries by enhancing investments, tourism, and trade. (ANI)
