Pak: Anger Brews In Balochistan As Flood-Affected People Seek Relief

Anger is brewing among the people of Pakistan’s Balochistan province as thousands of people in far-flung areas are still waiting for help from the government and welfare groups after devastating floods.

With the land routes of several districts with other areas remaining cut off due to the washing away of bridges and link roads, hundreds of people in the Awaran district protested on Sunday against the administration’s failure to launch relief operations, the Dawn newspaper reported.
Protesters gathered in Awaran and chanted slogans against the district administration as they alleged that relief goods sent to them were distributed to other areas, the report added.

“Standing crops and date orchards have been destroyed by floods and people were deprived of their livelihood,” Obaidullah Umrani, a local Balochistan Awami Party leader told Dawn.

On Saturday, six more people were killed due to heavy rains and floods in Balochistan, bringing the total tally of dead to 176.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) said 176 people have been reported dead amid the heavy rains and floods in the province. The total includes 77 men, 44 women and 55 children, local media reported.

Deaths were reported in Bolan, Quetta, Zhob, Dakki, Khuzdar, Kohlu, Kech, Mastoong, Harnai, Qila Saifullah and Sibbi.

The authorities said more than 18,000 homes were damaged or demolished due to the floods in the province. Tube wells, solar panels and other forms of communication are severely damaged due to the rains.

Disastrous spells of monsoon rains have led to severe damage on six different highways with 670 km length and 16 bridges, PDMA said. Additionally, 1,98,461 acres of crops were destroyed amid the natural disaster.

Balochistan in particular has seen uncharacteristically heavy rains during the monsoon season this year.

Amidst the ongoing devastation and wreckage caused by heavy rains and floods in different parts of the country, the Pakistan federal government has warned of more rains in the coming weeks as the federal cabinet declared a “monsoon emergency” in the country.

Pakistan’s weather department predicts the country will experience more rains in the coming week. Islamabad, Kashmir, Punjab, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan and Sindh will receive heavy rainfall in the coming days.

“Balochistan recorded more than 600 per cent above-normal rainfall during these monsoon spells since mid-June while Sindh received 500 per cent more rain. Major cities are being warned against urban flooding, prolonged electricity outages, and flash floods,” said Pakistan federal minister for Climate Change, Senator Sherry Rehman.

Rehman said that the effects of climate change continue to exacerbate in the country as it experienced lengthy heatwaves and forest fires. (ANI)

Milind Deora Eknath Shinde

Maharashtra Cabinet Expansion Likely To Take Place Tomorrow

Maharashtra cabinet expansion is likely to take place at 11 am on Tuesday at Maharashtra Raj Bhavan, sources said on Monday.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde is expected to expand his cabinet this week by inducting at least 15 Ministers and deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is expected to keep the crucial home portfolio, sources said.
Notably, both the Ministers have been functioning as a two-member cabinet, inviting criticism from Opposition leaders, including NCP leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.

“Ajit Pawar is the leader of the opposition. He will have to say such things. Ajit dada conveniently forgets that when he was in the government, there were just five ministers for the first 32 days,” Fadnavis said to reporters on Sunday.

Fadnavis has said the BJP has embarked on a mission to improve its footprint in Maharashtra in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections by identifying 16 parliamentary constituencies where opposition parties have had a consistent winning streak.

On 6 August, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde had said no ministerial-level powers have been given to the secretaries except in quasi-judicial matters. The Opposition in the state had accused the Chief Minister of functioning as a two-member cabinet and having designed the decision-making powers to the bureaucrats. He said these constituencies included those held by Shiv Sena leaders who have now joined Team Shinde.

On June 30, Shiv Sena rebel Eknath Shinde took oath as Maharashtra Chief Minister and Devendra Fadnavis his deputy. Later, Devendra Fadnavis and Eknath Shinde met with Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari and staked claim to power.

On June 28, Devendra Fadnavis met Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari and asked him for a floor test. The next day, Uddhav Thackeray offered his resignation to the Governor as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra. (ANI)

Dalai Lama about China

Dalai Lama Congratulates Jagdeep Dhankhar On Being Elected VP

Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama on Monday extended his congratulatory wishes to newly-elected Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar.

The 14th Dalai Lama in his letter to Dhankhar wrote, “Today, the international community is becoming ever more aware of the leadership role that India can play in contributing to the peace and development of all humanity. With your long and rich experience of public service, I am sure you will be able to serve this great nation and its people with success.”
The Tibetan spiritual leader said that India is the land of ‘ahimsa’ and ‘karuna’, ideas that can contribute much to the flourishing of humanity.

He expressed his commitment to moving forward to create awareness of this treasure.

“Over the years, India has taken great strides in many fields, especially in science and technology. As someone who has lived here for most of my life, I consider myself very much part of Indian society. It is auspicious that you are taking up this position on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of India’s independence.”

“Mahatma Gandhi made the principle of non-violence spread across the world, and leaders from Dr Martin Luther King to Nelson Mandela turned to ‘ahimsa’ to try to address long-standing differences and social problems. For my part, in addition to applying this principle wherever possible, I am deeply committed to trying to create greater awareness of this treasure, together with the power of compassion, among my Indian brothers and sisters and across the world,” he added.

Dalai Lama praised the traditional techniques of mental training in India, which include Yoga and meditation and said that they can benefit all human beings now and in future.

“I am proud to say that ancient India is the source of an understanding of the mind and emotions – as well as of its traditional techniques of mental training, such as meditation and yoga – that can be of benefit to all human beings, both now and in the future.

“I believe that it is most important to incorporate the study of India’s ancient knowledge into modern educational systems, purely from a secular and academic perspective.”

“India is uniquely well-positioned to combine these two essential bodies of knowledge. I am aware that such initiatives have begun in several states, and I very much hope that they will grow across the nation,” he added.

Dhankhar won the election by 346 votes after defeating Opposition candidate Margaret Alva.

He got 528 votes against opposition candidate Margaret Alva who secured 182 votes.

The next Vice-President of the country will take the oath of office on August 11, a day after the term of the incumbent Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu ends. (ANI)
