French Contingent Participates In 75th R-Day Parade

A few months after Indian troops and aircraft paraded in Paris for the 2023 Bastille Day, a 95-member marching contingent and a 33-member band contingent from France participated in the 75th Republic Day Parade in New Delhi today.

The French detachment marching is drawn exclusively from the French Foreign Legion, a well-known and unique corps strong of about 10000 men from all around the world, including India.

Kartavya Path witnessed a march past by a combined band and marching contingent of the French Armed Forces. The band contingent was headed by Captain Khourda and followed by a marching contingent led by Captain Noel.

Then it was followed by the second Infantry regiment of the French Foreign Legion comprising 90 legionnaires led by Captain Noel. The Legionnaires wear the famous ‘White Cap’, which can be worn only by legionnaires who successfully went through four months of hard selection tests.

The best legionnaires get promoted and wear the ‘Black Cap’.

French President Emmanuel Macron is attending as a chief guest at India’s 75th Republic Day celebration.

This marks a unique reciprocal exchange following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to France on its National Day in July 2023.

This momentous visit by Macron culminates in the 25th-anniversary celebrations of the Strategic Partnership between India and France.

Macron was earlier welcomed in Jaipur on Thursday where he held a bilateral discussion with the Indian Prime Minister

“Taking India-France Strategic Partnership to greater heights! Productive discussions held between PM @narendramodi and President @EmmanuelMacron of France in Jaipur. The two leaders took stock of bilateral ties & exchanged perspectives on a wide-range of bilateral and global issues,” Ministry of External Affiars (MEA) Official Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal wrote on X.

PM Modi said that it is a matter of great pride that the French President will be taking part in the 75th Republic Day celebrations in New Delhi on Friday.

He said that Macron’s presence not only strengthens the ties between the two nations but also adds a significant chapter to “our shared history of friendship and collaboration.”

PM Modi and President Macron have engaged in a series of high-profile meetings throughout 2023, underscoring the strength and depth of the bilateral relationship.

Their interactions have spanned various global platforms, including the COP 28 Summit in Dubai, the G20 Leaders’ Summit, and the G7 Summit in Hiroshima. Notably, President Macron was also the Guest of Honour at the Bastille Day Celebrations in France in July 2023.

This is the sixth time (the highest for any country) a French leader is participating in India’s biggest ceremonial event.

This tradition began with President Jacques Chirac in 1976, followed by Valery Giscard d’Estaing in 1980, Nicolas Sarkozy in 2008, and Francois Hollande in 2016.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s last visit to France for Bastille Day in July 2023 was a spectacle of symbolism and substance. The visit showcased the strong bonds between the two nations, with a tri-service Indian armed forces contingent marching at Champs-Elysees and a spectacular flypast by Rafale jets. (ANI)

Democratic System In India Much Older Than Concept Of Western Democracy: Murmu

Extending greetings to people on the eve of the 75th Republic Day, President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday said that it is truly a historic milestone in the journey of the nation in many ways.

In her Address to the Nation on the eve of Republic Day, the President said that the democratic system in India is much older than the concept of Western democracy and that is the reason why India is called the “mother of democracy”.

“Tomorrow is the day when we celebrate the commencement of the Constitution. Its Preamble begins with the words ‘We, the People of India’, highlighting the theme of the document, namely, democracy. In India, the democratic system is much older than the concept of Western democracy. That is the reason why India is called the “mother of democracy,” she said.

The President said the nation gratefully remembers the leaders as well as the officials who contributed to the framing of “our splendid and inspiring” Constitution.

“My heartiest greetings to all of you on the eve of the 75th Republic Day! My heart is filled with pride when I look back and see how far we have travelled despite adversities. The 75th year of the Republic is truly a historic milestone in the journey of the nation in many ways. This is an especially festive occasion, just as we celebrated the unique greatness and diverse culture of our nation during the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, when we completed 75 years of Independence,” she said.

She said India became free from foreign rule on August 15 after a long and difficult struggle.

“The task of framing the principles and processes that would govern the country and unleash its true potential was still a work in progress. The Constituent Assembly spent nearly three years holding detailed discussions on all aspects of governance and produced the great founding document of our nation, the Constitution of India,” she added. Adani Power's Net Profit Rises To Rs 2,738 Cr In October-December Quarter

Adani Power’s Net Profit Rises To Rs 2,738 Cr In October-December Quarter

Adani Power reported a sharply higher consolidated profit after tax during the October-December quarter of the current financial year 2023-24 at Rs 2,738 crore versus only Rs nine crore reported during the same quarter of the preceding year.

The Adani Group company attributed the rise in net profits to improved EBITDA. EBITDA, or earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization, is an alternative measure of a company’s overall financial performance.

The company’s consolidated profit after tax for the three quarters of 2023-24 is higher by 230 per cent at Rs 18,092 crore versus Rs 5,484 crore it reported same period last year. The company similarly attributed the growth to higher EBITDA.

Coming to the company’s consolidated continuing total revenue for the October-December quarter, it was higher by 72 per cent at Rs 13,405 crore versus Rs 7,773 crore during the same quarter of the preceding year, mainly due to greater sales volumes.

In three quarters of 2023-24 combined, the consolidated continuing total revenues were higher by 40 per cent at Rs 37,173 crore versus Rs 26,604 crore last year, attributable to greater sales volumes.

Further, consolidated continuing EBITDA for the October-December quarter more than tripled to Rs 5,059 crore versus Rs 1,479 crore last year, due to greater revenues and lower import fuel prices.

During the April-December period, the consolidated continuing EBITDA more than doubled to Rs. 13,516 crore versus Rs 6,210 crore same period of 2022, driven by higher revenues and lower import fuel prices.

Adani Power Ltd, a part of Adani group of companies, on Thursday announced the financial results for the third quarter that ended in December 2023.

“Adani Power continues to demonstrate its leadership across domains by achieving ever higher standards of excellence, as evidenced by the financial results for the third quarter of FY 2023-24,” SB Khyalia, CEO, Adani Power Limited, said, commenting on the earnings.

The ongoing brownfield capacity expansion of 1,600 MW at Mahan is on track, while we are moving ahead to extend our leadership further inorganically. We are excited to be a part of nation-building efforts through provision of reliable electricity supply from our highly efficient power plants while keeping sustainability goals at the forefront of our agenda,” the CEO further noted.

The operating performance for the October-December quarter includes the 1,600 MW Godda ultra-supercritical thermal power plant of Adani Power’s subsidiary Adani Power (Jharkhand) Limited (APJL), which was commissioned in the April-June quarter.

During the third quarter as well as the nine months of 2023-24, higher volumes were contributed by the Mundra, Udupi, Raipur, and Mahan plants apart from the incremental contribution of the Godda power plant, which has quickly become an important part of the power supply ecosystem of Bangladesh.

Adani Power said that its domestic power sales volumes were driven by growing power demand across India and offtake under Power Purchase Agreements (“PPAs”) was further supported by falling prices of imported coal and alternate fuel.

The Adani Group company has an installed thermal power capacity of 15,210 MW spread across eight power plants in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Jharkhand, apart from a 40 MW solar power plant in Gujarat. (ANI)

India Alliance Fine, Nitish Has No Issues: KC Tyagi

India Alliance Fine, Nitish Has No Issues: KC Tyagi

Amid the political turmoil in Bihar after RJD patriarch Lalu Prasad Yadav’s daughter, Rohini Acharya, took a swipe at Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, JD(U) leader KC Tyagi on Thursday clarified that all was fine with the INDIA bloc.

Speaking to ANI on Thursday, Tyagi said, “
INDIA gathbandhan (alliance) salamat hai
(INDIA bloc is safe). Everything is fine with the alliance.”

Earlier, Lalu’s daughter Rohini Acharya took a swipe at RJD’s ruling ally, JDS, on X posting that while the ‘socialist party’ (JDU) styles itself as progressive, its ideology shifts with the changing wind patterns.

However, a few hours later, all three posts by Lalu’s daughter were deleted.

Earlier, speaking on Bihar CM Nitish Kumar’s statement on dynastic politics and Rohini Acharya’s tweet, Tyagi said, “
Baccho ke comments par hum comment nahi karte
(We do not comment on children’s comments). Nitish Kumar’s remarks were neither directed at Lalu Yadav nor Sonia Gandhi. He was merely being appreciative of the lifelong efforts of Karpoori Thakur to ensure social justice.”

Earlier on Wednesday, on the occasion of Jan Nayak Karpoori Thakur’s birth centenary celebrations, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar launched a scathing attack on dynastic politics saying, “Karpoori Thakur never promoted his family. Taking inspiration from him, I too have never promoted any member of my family. After the death of Karpoori Thakur, only his son, Ramnath Thakur, was promoted. But today, people are promoting dynastic politics.”

Rashtrapati Bhavan announced on Tuesday that the President is pleased to award Bharat Ratna to Karpoori Thakur (posthumously).

Karpoori Thakur was born in 1924 in one of the most backward sections of society, the Nai Samaj. He was a remarkable leader whose political journey was marked by his unwavering commitment to the marginalised sections of society.

He served as the Chief Minister of Bihar and was a key figure in the struggle against social discrimination and inequality. His commitment to affirmative action gave representation and opportunities to the poor, oppressed, exploited and deprived sections of the country. (ANI)

Bihar BJP Chief Chaudhary, Sushil Likely To Meet Top Leadership Today

Bihar BJP president Samrat Chaudhary and former deputy chief minister Sushil Modi are likely to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah and other senior party leaders on Thursday evening, sources said.

“Amit Shah is likely to meet Bihar BJP chief Samrat Chaudhary and Sushil Modi,” a source said.

Further, according to sources, former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Renu Devi has also arrived in Delhi and could likely join the discussions with the top BJP leadership.

The talks come amid a war of words between the BJP and the ruling JDU, RJD and Congress combine in Bihar over the Centre’s decision to posthumously confer the country’s highest civilian honour, Bharat Ratna, on former chief minister and champion of social justice, Karpoori Thakur.

The JDU, while hailing the Centre’s decision, claimed that CM Nitish Kumar had long been demanding the country’s highest honour for Thakur. The RJD, meanwhile, took a swipe at the BJP claiming that the decision to bestow the country’s highest recognition on the two-time Bihar CM was taken with an eye on the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

However, the BJP asserted that it was Prime Minister Narendra Modi who decided to bestow the deserving honour on the late crusader for social justice.

Weighing in on the Centre’s decision, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar said at a rally, “These days, many people are more focussed on promoting their own family in politics, but Karpoori-ji never did that in his lifetime.”

Responding to the CM’s dig at dynastic politics without taking any names, RJD leader Shakti Yadav said his remarks were likely meant for BJP leaders.

“Nitish Kumar’s statement on dynastic politics was likely aimed at BJP leaders. Pankaj Singh, the son of Rajnath Singh, and Anurag Thakur (son of former Himachal CM and BJP leader Prem Kumar Dhumal) are all in active politics and hold important offices. Hence, the remarks might well have been directed at them. In a democracy, the people decide their representatives. The father doesn’t decide if his son will rule. I think this is what Nitish-ji was hinting at,” the RJD leader said.

Karpoori Thakur was a socialist leader and freedom fighter, who was twice chief minister of Bihar and prior to that, the state’s education minister and deputy chief minister.

Embarking on his political career with the Praja Socialist Party, he later joined forces with the Janata Party during his initial tenure as the chief minister of Bihar from 1977 to 1979.

Over time, he established connections with the Janata Dal, marking a significant shift in his political affiliation. (ANI)

Nawaz's Supporters Bring Lion, Tiger To Lahore Rally

Nawaz’s Supporters Bring Lion, Tiger To Lahore Rally

In an unprecedented event in Pakistan, the supporters of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) brought a lion and a tiger to the Nawaz Sharif-led Lahore rally on Tuesday, The News International reported.

It reported that the animals representing the party’s symbol were brought to the camps set up in the National Assembly (NA)-130 constituency to welcome former prime minister Nawaz Sharif. Scores of PML-N supporters took selfies with the lion and tiger locked in iron cages. The wild animals have been brought to multiple PML-N public gatherings in the past.

However, PML-N leader Marriyum Aurangzeb said on Nawaz’s instruction, a “real lion, brought by one of its supporters for the PML-N rally, has been returned.”

“Nawaz Sharif has instructed that no real lion or any other animal should be brought to any rally in Pakistan,” she said in a tweet.

The News International reported that Marriyum also said the PML-N supremo took strict notice of bringing a lion to the rally on Mohini Road and was directed to send the animal back immediately, after which the lion was sent back right away.

On Tuesday evening, Nawaz led a public rally in NA-130, from where he will contest general elections slated for February 8.

PML-N Chief Organiser Maryam Nawaz also participated in the rally, which will start from Mohini Road and go to Ameer Roor Malik Park from Kale Di Puli.

The rally will go from Malik Park to Saradar Chapel Chowk, via Moola Bakhsh Chowk, Ibrahim Road, Santnagar and Isalampura.

On Wednesday, Nawaz Sharif asserted that Pakistan faced a crisis following his ouster from the prime minister’s office, ARY News reported.

In a public gathering at Nankana Sahib, Sharif questioned the rationale behind imprisoning a prime minister who played a pivotal role in making Pakistan a nuclear state.

He alleged that five judges removed him from office for not accepting a salary from his son, leading to subsequent economic challenges in the country, as reported by ARY News.

Sharif pledged to bring about positive change in Nankana Sahib, outlining plans to transform the city into a model with the establishment of a boy’s degree college and a state-of-the-art cricket stadium. (ANI)

AI Attempts To Compromise Electoral Process Will Be Met With Strong Measures

Deepfake, AI Attempts To Compromise Electoral Process Will Be Met With Strong Measures: CEC

New Delhi [India], January 24 (ANI): Emphasizing that technology has been leveraged to bring in transparency and efficiency in all aspects of elections, Chief Election Commissioner of India Rajiv Kumar on the occasion of the 14th National Voters Day, said that misinformation, deep fakes and the use of Artificial Intelligence are being used increasingly to undercut the “faith and trust” of the people in the electoral process.

He further said that any attempts to compromise this fundamental tenet through false narratives will be met with swift and robust measures to uphold the integrity of our elections.

The Chief Election Commissioner extended warm greetings to all voters on the momentous occasion of the 14th National Voters’ Day and said that any attempts to compromise this fundamental tenet through false narratives will be met with swift and robust measures to uphold the integrity of our elections

“While technology has made possible many enabling features to enrich the electoral process, it has also posed various challenges to the democratic exercise. We, however, stand firm in our resolve to maintain a level playing field and foster an informed electorate. Any attempts to compromise this fundamental tenet through false narratives will be met with swift and robust measures to uphold the integrity of our elections,” he said.

He further urged first-time voters to exercise their franchise with full enthusiasm adding that the youth will make a resounding and emphatic statement by voting and motivating their peers to do the same.

“Over 60 democratic countries will have elections this year to elect their respective governments. India shall be the focus of all, as the world’s largest and most vibrant democracy conducts 18th Lok Sabha elections and elections to around eight state legislative assemblies during 2024. This day is an occasion to celebrate voters, youngsters in particular, as central to this great democracy of ours,” Rajiv Kumar said on Wednesday.

Kumar said that India will be having the World’s largest peacetime logistical exercise of movement of man and materials, to enable over 96 crore voters to exercise their franchise over 12 lakh polling stations through our 1.5 crore plus election officials.

The Chief Election Commissioner thanked and appreciated their polling teams who traverse the harshest of terrains to deliver democracy to the last mile.

“Our focus has been to make the electoral experience pleasant, all-inclusive and inducement-free. Our electoral roll serves as a vibrant and diverse mosaic, reflecting the rich diversity of our democracy,” Rajiv Kumar said.

Recalling a few lines from Tiruvalluvar’s, Kural, “It is compassion, the most gracious of virtues, which moves the world”. Reflecting this sentiment, it is the Commission’s resolve to make our elections inclusive and accessible. We have over 81 lakh persons with disability voters, over 1.8 crore 80 plus voters, 2.5 lakh 100 plus voters and over 48,000 third-gender voters registered with us. Optional Home voting facility is also available for 80 plus and PwD voters to vote from the comfort of their homes, he added.

Rajiv Kumar further said that in 2023 the Commission has successfully conducted elections in 9 states, where more than 16 crore voters gave voice to their cherished democratic right and voted in an atmosphere of fairness, confidence and joy.

“Elections were held peacefully, with no major incidents of violence and near zero repolls. In 126 villages of Bastar, polling stations were set-up for the first time in independent India, where voters came to polling stations without any fear and anxiety. Women voters participated enthusiastically, even surpassing male voters in many constituencies across these 9 states. The Commission’s efforts have meant 100 per cent registration of Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups in the festival of democracy,” he added.

The Chief Election Commissioner further said that political parties are the pivot of our vibrant democracy and urged them for their continued support and assured them of our fullest cooperation.

“The Commission bases its engagement with political parties on three pillars – full disclosure, complete involvement and assured responsiveness. Going into General Elections 2024, we appeal to them for their continued support and assure them of our fullest cooperation. Fostering an ethical and respectful political discourse plays a critical role in shaping the democratic process and in influencing our young voters. It is imperative that political parties engage in discussions that inspire rather than divide, and promote ideas instead of personal attacks. Political Parties, our biggest stakeholders must become our best partners in ensuring an ethical journey,” he added.

Kumar further expressed confidence in giving India’s approximately 96 crore electors and all stakeholders the best possible electoral experience, truly befitting the largest democracy in the world.

Concluding his address he appealed to each and every one of you, to take part in the ensuing festival of democracy with full vigour and enthusiasm.

The Election Commission of India was established on January 25, 1950, a day before India became a Republic, and that is why we celebrate National Voters Day on January 25. (ANI)
