IPL 2023: Nitish To Lead KKR In Absence Of Shreyas

IPL 2023: Nitish To Lead KKR In Absence Of Shreyas

Batter Nitish Rana will be the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders (IPL) in the absence of regular skipper Shreyas Iyer, who is currently recovering from a back injury, the franchise announced on Monday.

The announcement was made on official Twitter handle of the franchise.
Though the franchise hopes that Shreyas will make a comeback at some stage during the league, they have chosen to bank on Nitish’s experience as a skipper for Delhi in domestic cricket in the shorter format. They also wished Iyer a full and speedy recovery.

“Kolkata Knight Riders today announced that Nitish Rana would captain the side in the absence of Shreyas lyer, who is recovering from a back injury. While we are hopeful that Shreyas will recover and participate at some stage in the IPL 2023 edition, we feel fortunate that Nitish, with the captaincy experience having led his state side in white ball cricket and the IPL experience he has had with KKR since 2018, will do a great job. We are also confident that under Head Coach Chandrakant Pandit and the support staff, he will get all the support needed off the field, and the highly experienced leaders in the squad will provide all support that Nitish may need on the field. We wish him the best in his new role and Shreyas a full and speedy recovery,” said KKR in a statement shared on twitter.

Rana has been with KKR since 2018. He has scored a total of 1,744 runs for the team in 74 matches at an average of 26.02. He has scored 11 half-centuries for the side with the best score of 87. In his IPL career, which also saw him play for Mumbai Indians from 2015-17, he has scored 2,181 runs in 91 matches at an average of 28.32, with 15 half-centuries and the best score of 87. His strike rate of 134.22 makes him a valuable asset for the side at the top.

Rana has a solid win-loss record as a captain. He has led Delhi in 12 T20Is in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, the country’s top T20I domestic competition, winning eight matches, and losing four.

Iyer is likely to miss the first half of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, reported ESPNCricinfo last week.

Iyer has opted out of back surgery for his recurring lower-back injury. He has been advised to rest and is continuing his rehab. The injury had first ruled him out of the final Test against Australia during the recently-concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy and he also missed the ODI series against the visitors.

There is no definite return date marked for Iyer and he will be under the supervision of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) medical staff at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. KKR, however, expects their skipper to be back for the second half of the cash-rich league.

Iyer’s issues concern a disc bulge in his spine, which has resulted in an impinged nerve. The nerve runs along the right leg and has caused extreme pain in Iyer’s calf. The batter has received six injections in the recent past to numb his back pain, according to ESPNCricinfo.

Iyer, 28, first experienced back discomfort last December just after the conclusion of the Bangladesh tour. He missed the series against New Zealand at home and the first BGT test against Australia. Though he returned to play the second and third tests, the pain resurfaced during the final test, where he fielded for two days. He did not come out to bat during India’s only innings in the match which ended in a draw.

Kolkata Knight Riders will start its IPL 2023 campaign against Punjab Kings on April 1 at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali.

On April 6, they will be playing their first match at the home arena of Eden Gardens, Kolkata against Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Last year, KKR managed a seventh-place finish in the points table with six wins, eight losses and 12 points in their 14 games. They failed to make it to the playoffs.

Israel Prez Calls On Govt To Halt Judicial Reform Legislation

Israel Prez Calls On Govt To Halt Judicial Reform Legislation

Israel President Isaac Herzog on Monday morning called on members of the governing coalition to immediately halt its planned overhaul of the country’s judiciary, after the country witnessed a night of major protests, reported Jerusalem Post.

“For the sake of the unity of the people of Israel, for the sake of responsibility, I am calling on you to stop legislation immediately. I turn to all the party leaders in the Knesset, coalition and opposition as one, put the citizens of the nation above all else and behave responsibly and bravely without further delay,” Herzog said.
Major protests continued in the city of Tel Aviv throughout Sunday night after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fired Defence Minister Yoav Gallant who in a speech on Saturday night expressed his opposition to the legislation.

Netanyahu met with coalition party leaders on Monday morning in order to decide whether or not to push forwards with the controversial bill to remake the Judicial Appointments Committee, which was passed in the Knesset Constitution Committee this morning and is now ready to be brought to the Knesset plenum for its second and third reading, reported Jerusalem Post.

National Security Minister and Otmza Yehudit leader MK Itamar Ben-Gvir threatened today to quit the government if the judicial reform legislation freezes, according to reports by KAN and Channel 12 News.

Ben-Gvir was heard shouting from within the meeting that the government should not back down. If Ben-Gvir leaves the government and quits the coalition, the coalition will no longer have a majority and the government will likely fall.

Meanwhile, widespread strikes were announced in Israel to protest judicial reform. The country’s Ben-Gurion Airport has banned flights leaving the airport until further notice and Workers’ Union too have announced a strike, reported Jerusalem Post.

The announcement of grounded flights was made by Israel’s Airport Authority Committee Chairman Pinhas Idan.As for incoming flights, only flights that are already in the sky will be allowed to land.

Passengers continued the check-in process after the announcement without knowing if their flights would actually depart. The flight board in the airport showed flights later on the day still intending on leaving but they won’t necessarily leave, reported Jerusalem Post.

A member of the Workers’ Union said that if Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stops the judicial reform legislation, flights will return to functioning properly.

The strikes are also being held in universities, hospitals and other sectors.

Netanyahu is believed to still be holed up in his office, having reportedly spent the past several hours in various “security and legal” consultations with key ministers and advisers, notably including Justice Minister Yariv Levin.

He can probably hear the calls for him to resign, perhaps even the youngsters’ singing derisively that he’s “messing with the wrong generation,” reported The Times of Israel.

Netanyahu’s government was sworn in at the end of December. By January 4, the great judicial reform was announced by Justice Minister Yariv Levin. The opposition, everyone understood, would rail and rage; old elites watching their displacement would not go quietly into the night. But in the end, the frustration of three decades of judicial overreach now hardened into a grim determination, would see the coalition through, reported The Times of Israel.

The Knesset (Parliament of Israel) recently proposed a series of judicial reforms. Israelis believe that the new changes will curb the power of the country’s judicial system to question lawmakers. The reforms empower the Knesset to make judicial appointments at will. Citizens believe that the new changes are limiting the power of the Israeli Judicial System. Thousands are protesting against the reforms in the country.

Under the current system, the Supreme Court (SC) of Israel has the power to strike down legislation if they are in violation of the basic laws of the country. (ANI)

Explosion Near Afghanistan’s Kabul Kills 2

At least two persons were killed and 12 others have been injured in a heavy blast near Afghanistan’s Foreign Ministry in downtown Kabul on Monday, according to a hospital run by an Italian NGO, reported Al Jazeera.

“We received some patients,” said Stefano Sozza of Italian NGO Emergency.
The NGO runs a surgical centre specialising in treating victims of the long-drawn war in downtown Kabul, the Al Jazeera said.

A tweet from the NGO said at least one child was among the injured in the incident that took place near the foreign ministry.

Afghanistan-based Tolo News also tweeted, “A blast happened on Foreign Ministry’s road near the Daudzai Trade Center in downtown Kabul this afternoon, eyewitnesses said, describing it as a heavy explosion.”

However, Taliban officials have not commented on the incident yet and none of the group has claimed responsibility for the attack either.

Monday’s incident took place around lunchtime, when the city is especially crowded as government office staff leave early for the day during the Islamic month of Ramzan.

More details are awaited.

Earlier in January 2023, a blast took place in front of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kabul in which 5 civilians were killed, while several others were injured.

It may be noted that the regional affiliate of the Islamic State, (IS-K) has increased its assaults since the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan in 2021.

Armed groups linked to the Afghan branch of the Islamic State have carried out bombings targeting ethnic Hazaras, Afghan Shias, Sufis, and others, killing and injuring hundreds.

A number of blasts have been reported in Afghanistan since the start of 2023. Several blasts were reported in the capital city this month including one near Kabul military airport. Moreover, a Chinese-owned hotel was also targeted in the heart of Kabul.

Meanwhile, the Taliban has been urging for the international recognition of its government – the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.

According to some political analysts, the international world will not engage with the current Afghan government until the Islamic Emirate lifts its restrictions on women and reconsiders its position regarding the international community’s demands, according to Tolo News.

Girls and women were recently barred from attending their universities. Tolo News reported that they have been urging the interim government to reopen universities for them.

The ban on female schooling was met with condemnation both from inside Afghanistan and the international community.

Since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan, schooling above grade six for them has been closed. Later in December last year, girls and women were barred from going to universities and working with NGOs.

Taliban has imposed draconian restrictions on the rights to freedom of expression, association, assembly and movement for women and girls.

Further, the Taliban regime which took over Kabul in August last year has curtailed women’s rights and freedoms, with women largely excluded from the workforce due to the economic crisis and restrictions. (ANI)

SC Extends Stay Of UP Court’s Proceedings Against Kejriwal

The Supreme Court on Monday extended its interim order which had stayed the trial court’s proceedings against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in a case registered against him in 2014 in Uttar Pradesh during the election campaign.

A bench of Justices KM Joseph and BV Nagarathna while saying that its order on stay of trial court’s proceedings shall continue, adjourned the matter for hearing in May as no counsel appeared for the State of Uttar Pradesh.
Earlier, the bench had stayed the trial court’s proceedings and also issued notice on Kejriwal’s petition.

During the election campaign in 2014, Kejriwal had allegedly said that “those who believe in ‘Khuda’ would not be pardoned by ‘Khuda’ if they vote for Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Kejriwal approached the Supreme Court challenging the Allahabad High Court order which had rejected his plea for discharge from the case.

The High Court while dismissing Kejriwal’s plea had said that it appeared that Kejriwal is threatening the voters in the name of ‘Khuda’ knowing full well that if he uses the term ‘Khuda’, some set of voters belonging to different religions might have severely been influenced.

Earlier, Sultanpur Court had dismissed his discharge application.

During the earlier hearing, the top court bench had expressed disapproval of the statement made by Kejriwal saying, “Why are you bringing God? In a secular country, leave God alone. God does not need anyone’s protection, he can take care of himself.”

Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi appearing for Kejriwal had then said, “Sometimes during political campaigning, unintentional things are said”. (ANI)

Within minutes of the commencement of proceedings of both Houses, Rajya Sabha was adjourned till 2 pm and Lok Sabha till 4 pm on Monday, amid Opposition MPs’ protest in the second phase of the Budget Session.

They were sloganeering over the Adani Group issue and Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification.
Earlier today, the opposition MPs held a meeting at the chamber of LoP Rajya Sabha and Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge in the Parliament building on Monday to formulate the strategy for the day.

“In PM Modi’s New India, Opposition leaders have become the prime target of the BJP! While BJP leaders with criminal antecedents are inducted into the cabinet, Opposition leaders are disqualified for their speeches. Today, we have witnessed a new low for our constitutional democracy,” the TMC Supremo had earlier said.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge welcomed TMC’s move to participate in the meeting stating that anyone who comes forward to “protect democracy” is welcome.

“I thank everyone who supported this. That is why, I thanked everyone yesterday and I thank them today as well. We welcome anyone who comes forward to protect democracy and Constitution and safeguard the people. We extend heartfelt gratitude to the people who support us,” Kharge said.
