Rohit Back In Top 10, Gill Stays At Second Place In Latest ICC Rankings

India skipper and opener Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock and Trent Boult are the big movers in the top 10 of the ODI Rankings’ in the latest update released on Wednesday.

The strong performance from South Africa opener Quinton de Kock and India captain Rohit Sharma during the World Cup have pushed them higher in the ODI Batting Rankings.

The Proteas opener started the tournament with consecutive hundreds but missed an opportunity to climb even closer to the top spot after he was dismissed for 20 runs in South Africa’s 38 runs loss against Netherlands.

De Kock has risen three spots to the third place in the ODI batting rankings, leaving behind his teammate Rassie van der Dussen at the fourth spot.

Rohit Sharma has made an even bigger jump of five places to sixth after his scintillating 131-run knock against Afghanistan followed by 86 runs against India’s arch-rivals Pakistan.

Afghanistan opener and wicketkeeper Rahmanullah Gurbaz (up 19 spots to 18th place) and Netherlands captain Scott Edwards (up 16 spots to 27th place) have also surged in the batting rankings following their performances in the ODI World Cup.

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam has 836 rating points and stretched his lead in the ODI batting rankings to 18 points.

India’s youngster and opener Shubman Gill continued to be in second place. He scored 12 against Pakistan after missing the first two games due to illness.

New Zealand speedster Trent Boult is within the grasp of number one spot in the ODI Bowling Rankings following a magnificent spell against Bangladesh.

Boult is only one rating point behind current top spot holder Josh Hazlewood (660 rating points) after moving up one place in the latest rankings update.

Star Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan climbed two spots higher to fourth place. South Africa spinner Keshav Maharaj made a bigger jump of seven spots to be at the fifth place alongside Mujeeb Ur Rahman.

Among the fast bowlers, India’s Jasprit Bumrah moved up seven spots and South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada up one spot with both placed 4th. Lungi Ngidi jumped six spots to 16th.

Veteran Bangladesh spinner Shakib Al Hasan holds onto the first spot in the ODI All-rounder Rankings with 343 rating points.

A decent start to the Cricket World Cup has helped New Zealand spinner Mitchell Santner climb one spot to equal sixth.

Aussie spinner Glenn Maxwell has impressed with the ball at the Cricket World Cup so far boosting his standing three places to eighth in the all-rounder rankings. (ANI)

ICC Rankings: Ashwin Retains Top Spot in Test Cricket

Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin retained his top spot as a Test bowler in the ICC Test Rankings for bowlers in men’s cricket, despite missing out on the ICC World Test Championship against Australia at The Oval, informed ICC on Wednesday.

Ashwin finished as India’s leading wicket-taker and overall third-highest wicket-taker behind South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada (67 wickets) and Australian spinner Nathan Lyon (88 wickets) in WTC 2021-23 cycle. He took 61 wickets in 13 matches at an average of 19.67 and an economy rate of 2.48. His best bowling figures are 6/91.

Rohit Sharma (729 points) and Virat Kohli (700 points) sit in 12th and 13th respectively after the match among the batters. Rohit scored 15 and 43 in the ‘Ultimate Test’ at The Oval. Virat also scored 14 and 49 in the title clash against the Aussies.

In WTC 2021-23 cycle, Rohit scored 758 runs in 11 matches at an average of 42.11. He scored two centuries and two fifties in 19 innings, with the best score of 127. The skipper missed out on some matches due to injury. On the other hand, Virat posted decent numbers but could not live up to his ‘King Kohli’ tag in this cycle. In 17 matches, he scored 932 runs at an average of 32.13. In 30 innings, he scored only one century and three fifties, with the best score of 186.

Travis Head’s stunning first innings century in the World Test Championship Final has pushed the left-hander well up the ICC Men’s Test Batting Rankings. He won the ‘Player of the Match’ award in the final.

Scoring 163 across the first two days of the World Test Championship Final against India at The Oval, Head jumped three places, joining Marnus Labuschagne (1st) and Steve Smith (2nd) in the top three with a rating of 884. Usman Khawaja (9th, 777 rating points) makes it four Australians in the top 10.

The last time three batters from the same side occupied the top three positions in the Test rankings was in December 1984 when Gordon Greenidge (810), Clive Lloyd (787), and Larry Gomes (773) from West Indies formed the top trio.

Smith and Head were the third and fourth highest-scorer for Australia in the WTC 2021-23 cycle behind Marnus Labuschagne (1,576 runs in 20 matches at an average of 52.53, with five centuries and five fifties) and Usman Khawaja (1,621 runs in 17 matches at an average of 64.84, with six tons and seven fifties).

In 20 matches, Smith scored 1,407 runs at an average of 52.11. He scored four centuries and six fifties in the cycle, with the best score of 200*. He was the fifth-highest scorer in the recently-concluded WTC cycle.

Head also turned many eyes towards him with his attacking batting style and his consistency despite the high-risk batting approach. In 18 matches, he scored 1,389 runs at an average of 55.56. Head scored four centuries and six fifties, with the best score of 175. He ended as the sixth-highest scorer in the cycle. (ANI)
