Lok Sabha polls: JD(S) Leader Revanna Files Nomination From Karnataka’s Hassan

Janata Dal (Secular) leader Prajwal Revanna filed nomination for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from Karnataka’s Hassan district on Thursday.

The incumbent MP is the son of former minister HD Revanna and grandson of JD(S) supremo and former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda.

Revanna is seeking the mandate from Hassan Lok Sabha constituency for the second time.

The BJP-JD(S) alliance announced their seat-sharing arrangement for three seats earlier this month. As per the arrangement, JD(S) will be contesting for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) from Mandya, Kolar and Hassan parliamentary constituencies.

Reportedly, JD(S) leader and former Chief Minister of Karnataka, HD Kumaraswamy will be contesting from Mandya.

Earlier, addressing a press conference in Bengaluru, Kumaraswamy claimed that the JD(S) joined the NDA to ‘solve’ the state’s problems while alleging that the alliance with Congress earlier failed the party.

“We joined the NDA alliance to solve the problems of Karnataka. In the past, we lost by allying with Congress. JD(S)-BJP leaders have joined forces and started campaigning in Bengaluru rural constituency,” the former CM said.

BJP MP Tejasvi Surya earlier said that the alliance of the BJP and JD(S) will have a “positive impact” on the upcoming parliamentary elections in Karnataka.

“BJP-JDS coming together has given strength to both parties at the grassroots levels. I’m very confident that in all 28 Lok Sabha seats, this alliance will have a very positive impact. In many seats where our vote share is very good, it will further increase,” Surya had told ANI.

Karnataka, which has 28 Lok Sabha seats, will vote in two phases on April 26 and May 7.In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress and JD-S fought together against the BJP and the combine was decimated.

The BJP had won a record 25 seats; Congress and JD-S won just one seat each. The Lok Sabha Elections 2024 will be held in seven phases, starting on April 19. The counting of votes is on June 4. (ANI)

'An Expert In Betrayal': Congress Slams Nitish Kumar

‘An Expert In Betrayal’: Congress Slams Nitish Kumar

Hours after Nitish Kumar severed his ties with the ruling Mahagathbandhan government in Bihar, a decision also being seen as a big blow to the unity of the INDIA bloc, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh took a swipe at Nitish Kumar saying that the Janata Dal (United) supremo gives a tough challenge to chameleons and that his move will instead further strengthen the opposition’s alliance, formed to take on the Bharatiya Janata Party at the Centre in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

The Congress General Secretary in-charge Communications said that all this ‘drama’ has been done to divert people’s attention from his party MP Rahul Gandhi-led Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.

“It is not surprising that Nitish Kumar has resigned. He is a seasoned politician. He has been a Chief Minister for several years. But he keeps changing his political colours. He gives a tough challenge to chameleons. People of Bihar will give a befitting reply to him and to those who are making him dance from Delhi. It is clear that the BJP, Prime Minister and Home Minister are perturbed by the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra…This drama has been done to divert attention from the Yatra…I would like to say that Nitish Kumar is an expert in betrayal,” Jairam Ramesh said.

He said, “This will not have any impact on Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra. INDIA bloc will be further strengthened, Mamata Banerjee has herself said this. This (Nitish Kumar’s resignation) will further upset people and I think the people of Bihar will teach the right lesson to Nitish Kumar and the BJP in the election…I agree that this will be in the headlines for a day or two, it doesn’t look good that Nitish Kumar had called the first meeting (of INDIA Alliance) in Patna…he attended all meetings. But like I said, Nitish Kumar gives a tough competition to chameleons.”

However, in his first reaction to the political turmoil after handing over his resignation letter to the Governor Rajendra Arlekar, Nitish Kumar said the state of affairs in the ‘Mahagathbandhan’ (grand alliance) formed one and a half years ago was ‘not good’.

“I resigned as chief minister and requested the Governor to dissolve the government. The situation came to this pass as the state of affairs within the ruling alliance in Bihar wasn’t good. I sought the advice and opinions of everyone before coming to this decision. I took all opinions and suggestions to heart. The government is being dissolved today,” Nitish told reporters after walking out of the Raj Bhavan.

The fast-changing political events in the state were triggered by a social media post from former CM and RJD chief Lalu Yadav’s daughter, Rohini Acharya, in which she took a swipe at the JD(U) saying that while the ‘socialist party’ styles itself as progressive, its ideology shifts with the changing wind patterns.

As per sources, in the latest development, Nitish will take oath as the Chief Minister for the ninth time along with two deputy chief ministers from the BJP at the swearing-in ceremony on Sunday evening.

Meanwhile, Acharya after Kumar’s big move, in a cryptic post on X wrote, “Garbage goes back into the dustbin. Happy stinking garbage to the group!” (ANI)

Will Not Form Alliance With JD(S): Shivakumar

Karnataka Congress DK Shivakumar on Wednesday dismissed a post-poll alliance with Janata Dal (Secular) JD(S) expressing confidence that his party will get an absolute majority in the 224-seat assembly.

“Here the issue is price rise, corruption, good governance and development. There are no chances of alliance with JD(S). We will form the government on our own,” Shivakumar told reporters after casting his vote here in elections to Karnataka Legislative Assembly.
Earlier in the day, former Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah too expressed confidence that the Congress will secure an absolute majority, saying it could get 130-150 seats.

Shivakumar further appealed to the people of Karnataka to consider “inflation” in the BJP-ruled state and come out and vote.

“I am appealing to everyone, please cast a vote by looking at our gas cylinders. I have advised all my leaders to put a gas cylinder outside the booth and put a garland on it,”Shivakumar said.

The Karnataka Congress chief had a day ago performed aarti of a gas cylinder., a video of which was posted on the Congress Party handle.

The Karnataka Congress president also urged young voters to vote for a “change” in the State and expressed confidence that the people of Karnataka will give Congress 141 seats.

“Today young voters have a great opportunity, they will vote for a change. They know about the price rise and corruption in the state and I’m sure that they will go for a change and give us 141 seats,” he said.

Shivakumar was also seen driving an autorickshaw in his constituency Kanakapura after casting his vote.

The Congress party has a stronghold in Kanakapura where Shivakumar is a seven-time MLA.

In the 2018 Karnataka Assembly Election, he won the seat defeating Janata Dal (Secular) – JD(S) candidate – by a huge margin of 79,909 votes.

Usha Shivakumar, wife of DK Shivakumar asserted that she is “100 per cent confident” about his win in the Karnataka Assembly Elections.

“I am 100 per cent confident about my husband’s win. Congress government will come, it (The Kerala Story) will not have any effect in Karnataka. I appeal to people to vote for Congress,” said Usha Shivakumar.

The Congress conducted high-decibel campaigning with high promises with top leaders including Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.

The Congress which is working hard to wrest power from the BJP that is striving to break the 38-year-old pattern of alternating governments and retain its power in the state faced criticism over its manifesto which mentions banning Bajrang Dal if it is elected to power.

The Congress manifesto said the party is committed to taking firm and decisive action against individuals and organisations spreading hatred among communities on grounds of caste and religion.

However, controversy over the issue forced Shivakumar to promise a “huge” temple of Hindu Lord Hanuman.

Congress in its manifesto also promised to bring back the Muslim quota, higher reservations for various classes, cash handouts and freebies.

Voting is currently underway for 224 assembly constituencies in Karnataka with 2,615 candidates in the fray.

According to the Election Commission of India, the majority mark to form the government is 113 seats.

A total of 42,48,028 new voters have been registered to vote for the assembly elections.

Some of the key constituencies which will make a major mark in the polls are Varuna, Kanakapura, Shiggaon, Hubli-Darwad, Channapatna, Shikaripura, Chittapur, Ramanagara, and Chikmagalur. (ANI)

Tried Best To Save JDU: Kushwaha Writes Open Letter

Tried Best To Save JDU: Kushwaha Writes Open Letter

Janata Dal (United) leader and party’s Parliamentary Board President Upendra Kushwaha has convened two days open session of his supporter in Patna on February 19-20 to discuss the prevailing situation in JDU.

Kushwaha has written an open letter to party workers and claimed that JDU is getting weaker due to internal reasons.
“After becoming part of the grand alliance, I have been worried about the party’s position since the results of the assembly bypolls were announced. I kept informing Chief Minister Nitish Kumar about the party condition. I have tried my best to save the party from losing ground in Bihar and my efforts continue even today,” he wrote.

Despite all the efforts, Kushwaha said his concerns were not only ignored by Chief Minister Kumar but interpreted incorrectly. He said he is concerned about the supporters of JDU if the party disintegrates.

“I want to save JDU. This is only the motive and intention behind the open letter to party workers. Still, 15 days remain in between. I hope that good sense will prevail in the party,” Kushwaha told ANI.

He also questioned CM Nitish Kumar for not answering on the alleged “deal” with Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).

“Why are Nitish Kumar and the people around him not answering whether any ‘deal’ has been done between JDU and RJD or not? Either Nitish Ji doesn’t want to answer the question or something else has happened,” he said.

“Why RJD leaders continuously speak against me despite JDU being part of the grand alliance. Should not Nitish Kumar ask why RJD leaders speaking against me?” he questioned.

Asked if he would launch his political party, Kushwaha said, “Till now I have not planned a new party but focus to strengthen JDU.”

Meanwhile, JDU president and party MP Rajiv Ranjan Singh criticized Kushwaha for putting his concerns in public and not in the party forum.

“Only Upendra Kushwaha can tell what is going on in his mind and about his intentions. If a person has issue with his party and his intentions are right, he will speak on the party’s forum. But instead, he is speaking about it publically. Hence, something is wrong,” the JDU chief said. (ANI)
