London Israeli Protestors

London: Pro-Israeli, Pro-Palestinian Protestors Clash

Amid protest rallies over the Israel-Hamas conflict, groups of pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli protesters clashed at High Street Kensington Tube Station in London on Monday evening.

Police officers were dispatched to restrain tensions between sympathisers on opposing sides of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Their priority was keeping the peace and avoiding violence between pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli protesters as events overseas triggered heated demonstrations in London.

Videos on various social media platforms showed dozens of police officers attempting to separate demonstrators at High Street Kensington Tube Station as a pro-Palestine rally taking place outside the Israeli embassy started to escalate.

In a major escalation on October 7, Hamas launched a “surprise attack” on Israel, firing a barrage of rockets into the southern and central parts of the country, killing over 700 people.

Meanwhile, UK PM Rishi Sunak has branded the people supporting Hamas for the “appalling attack” as “terrorists”.

“The people who support Hamas are fully responsible for this appalling attack. They are not militants. They are not freedom fighters. They are terrorists,” posted Sunak on X.

Thousands gathered for the pro-Palestinian protest in front of the Israeli Embassy on Monday evening at around 6 pm (GMT). Some protestors were seen climbing lampposts with flags and flares. Protesters chanted “Israel is a terrorist state” and “Allahu Akhbar.” Stalls were set up selling “Free Palestine” merchandise. Some launched fireworks towards the embassy building.

“Events in central London this evening – following the attack in Israel and the escalation of conflict along the border with Gaza in recent days – have now concluded, with three arrests and further live arrest enquiries underway,” said Metropolitan Police in a statement.

In contrast, weeping Israelis held a vigil outside Downing Street in the evening to honour victims and hostages taken by Hamas during an assault over the Gaza border on Saturday. UK PM Rishi Sunak also visited a London synagogue in a show of support for Israel.

On the other hand, Suella Braverman, Member of Parliament of the UK called for zero tolerance of terrorism on the streets of Britain.

“There must be zero tolerance for anti-semitism or glorification of terrorism on the streets of Britain. I expect the police to use the full force of the law against displays of support for Hamas, other proscribed terrorist groups or attempts to intimidate British Jews,” Braverman posted on X.

The protests reflected growing overseas tensions over the escalating violence between Israel and Palestine.

Earlier on Monday, a Kosher restaurant in the Golders Green area in London was vandalised, and a nearby bridge was graffitied with “Free Palestine.” The UK’s Chief Rabbi said hardly any Jewish family is unaffected by the Hamas attack, calling it a time of “grief and worry”.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan posted online, “There is no tolerance for hate in our city. I remain in close contact with the Met Police. Whoever did this will face the full force of the law.

“I stand with Jewish Londoners, today and always,” he said.

The pro-Palestinian rally featured angry condemnation of Israeli military actions in Gaza, which they view as occupation. Meanwhile, pro-Israel demonstrators mourned recent casualties and emphasized Hamas’s role in instigating unrest.

As emotions run high, the Metropolitan Police is on alert.

Londoners will continue to see officers on the streets, in our communities across London in the days to come following days to reassure and protect, the Metropolitan Police’s statement added.

More protests are scheduled in London by both sides through the week. A huge pro-Palestinian rally is to take place in front of the BBC building on Oxford Street. (ANI)

London Khalistan Supportes

London: Sikh Restaurant Owner’s Car Reportedly Shot At, Vandalised By Alleged Khalistan Supporters

A Sikh restaurant owner, who earlier received threats from Khalistani elements for being vocal against them, has now claimed that his car was shot at and vandalised by the extremists in West London.

A video posted on X by Insightuk2, which describes itself as a social movement of British Hindus and Indians, claimed that some unidentified assailants allegedly opened fire at the car of Harman Singh Kapoor, adding that his family has been subjected to constant threats of violence and rape by alleged Khalistan supporters.

However, there has been no formal statement from the UK police on these claims.

Notably, the claims came to the fore on the very day elements from outside Scotland deliberately disrupted a planned interaction organised for the Indian High Commissioner, Vikram Doraiswami.

“They were threatened and abused by these elements. In an effort to prevent any potential altercation, the HC and CG decided to leave the premises shortly upon their arrival,” India’s High Commission to UK said in a statement.

A UK-based journalist and researcher, Charlotte Littlewood, in a post shared on X, claimed that the attack on Kapoor’s family was ongoing.

“Attack on Harman Singh Kapoor + family is ongoing. They are awaiting police as Khalistani extremists are thought to have shot at their vehicle in London. As feared the Canada row has emboldened extremists – we will see more of this,” her post read.

Earlier in the day, she also questioned the decision of removing the panic alarm from the car of family amid the diplomatic fallout of Canada’s claim of an Indian hand in the killing of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

“At this heightened time of threat following the India-Canada row. Where the Khalistani extremists are threatening India High commissions in the West and assassinating Indian officials in India. How was the decision made to remove their panic alarm? (sic),” her post added.

Meanwhile, INSIGHT UK, also alleged that Khalistani extremists were threatening Sikhs in the UK.

It also alleged that no arrests were made despite several months of alleged torture of Harman Kapoor’s family.

“The Police have made no arrests in what has been months of torture for this family. When will action be taken against these Khalistani extremists who pose a serious law and order threat @metpoliceuk,” INSIGHT UK posted on X, adding, “Why is the UK government not taking stringent action against an extremist ideology with a history of terrorism.”

Earlier, on May 4, Kapoor and his family alleged that they have been receiving constant online threats after they posted a video about the Khalistan movement on social media, Khalsa Vox reported.

The alleged threats were made despite repeated assurances by the police of safety and special safeguarding measures. The family had experienced three attacks, and do not feel safe, according to Khalsa Vox, a portal on news related to Punjab politics, history, culture, and heritage.

Harman’s restaurant was attacked by pro-Khalistan supporters, an incident that occurred just days after the Indian High Commission in London was vandalised in April 2023.

Harman then posted a video which garnered two million views in two days, leading to abusive calls, social media trolling, and threats against him and his family.

Harman said following the video, he received death threats and his restaurant was attacked. The attackers demanded that he remove the video, raise pro-Khalistan slogans and burn the Indian flag, or face death.

Harman said his wife and his daughter even received several rape threats. “Our address was put online with calls to rape and kill them. Videos of miscreants licking the pictures of my wife and daughter were posted as well,” he added, according to Bitter Winter, a magazine on religious liberty and human rights.

An independent report commissioned by former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson had expressed concerns over the rising influence of pro-Khalistan extremists within the British Sikh community, Khalsa Vox reported.

The Bloom Review, an independent report commissioned by former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, meanwhile, called on the Rishi Sunak government to address the issue urgently and safeguard most of the Sikhs in the UK who do not support their extremist ideology.

The report stressed time-bound action on the issue. The report noted that the Sikh communities in the UK face coercion and intimidation by fringe Khalistani elements, Khalsa Vox reported. These pro-Khalistan groups artificially inflate their influence and attract disproportionate attention by lobbying political bodies under the guise of human rights activism.

According to the news report, the actions of pro-Khalistan groups create a false image of legitimacy which is not in accordance with the beliefs of the Sikh faith.

It is important to understand that Khalistani separatists do not represent the views of most of British Sikh communities, as per the Khalsa Vox report. (ANI)

Indian Soldiers

Indian Soldiers Role In WWI Brought To Life In Army Museum Expo In London

The National Army Museum is currently highlighting the critical contribution of the British Indian Army during the First World War through a temporary exhibition titled “British Indian Army: Soldiers of the First World War.”

Created together with the United Service Institution of India, the display “Looks at the history of the British Indian Army and its Indian soldiers in the First World War,” explained Julian Farrance, Liaison Officer at the museum. It highlights their “absolutely vital” role across multiple fronts and campaigns, he emphasized.

“The history of the British Indian Army is very key to the National Army Museum,” Farrance stated, noting that some of the museum’s first collections were of Indian soldiers.

“We wanted to look at that specifically in this temporary exhibition and particularly at the history of the First World War,” he said.

Nearly 1.4 million Indian men served in the Great War (World War I), making up the largest volunteer force ever assembled at the time. The exhibition brings to life their indispensable service from 1914 to 1918 in major theatres like the Western Front, Gallipoli, and Mesopotamia as well as lesser-known Asian fronts.

Featuring photographs, artwork reproductions, documents and medals of Indian soldiers, the exhibition shows that “We (Great Britain) would not be able to prosecute the war the way that we do without their contribution,” Farrance emphasized.

Though the role of Indian troops is “a subject that tends to be overlooked” in the UK’s popular memory of the war, Farrance said: “Looking at that contribution and putting it into these kinds of exhibitions is something that we do very regularly at the museum to provide a more complete historical picture.”

“There are so many different contributing countries that put soldiers into the British Army throughout its long history. But one of the most important ones is the contribution of Indian soldiers,” Farrance said, stating that the museum continually highlights the role of the British Indian Army.

The exhibition opened in August and will run through till November 5, spotlighting a vital part of the museum’s origins and collections. (ANI)

A Weakened Russia A Resurgent China

A Weakened Russia, A Resurgent China

Among the many qualities that a nation’s top spy must necessarily have will be his self-effacing nature marked by rare appearances in the media or any public forum. But when he does, it is with the full backing of the administration. The intelligence chief is privy to kind of information that becomes important inputs for framing the country’s foreign and strategic policies.

The other day when William Burns, director of the US Central Intelligence Agency, spoke at length on the corrosive impact of Ukrainian war on the Putin regime and the CIA resolve to not let “it go to waste… a once-in-a-generation opportunity,” the world got an insight into US assessment of how continuance of the war, described as a “Putin fixation on controlling Ukraine and its choices,” will weaken Russian leadership.

Burns said in the course of a lecture in London “disaffection with the war will continue to gnaw away at Russian leadership, beneath the steady diet of state propaganda and practised repression.” The war has in more than one way to Putin’s discomfiture shown the world clumsiness in Moscow’s military strategy and its execution. For the majority of Europeans, the Russian misstep in Ukraine has exposed them to war for the first time in their mainland. The war is a reminder of dangers of not seeing in time aggressive designs of a country like Russia and making wide ranging partnerships. In a telling jibe Burns said the “strategic failure” of Moscow has already consigned it as a “junior partner and economic colony of China being shaped by Putin’s mistakes.”

The West never tires of complaining that through economic coercion to be seen largely in Africa and in some countries in Asia, China is rapidly expanding its area of influence. But it has to be said to the credit of Beijing that it has been immensely successful in mopping up all kinds of resources in Africa from iron ore to bauxite to coal to cobalt in pursuit of long-term raw materials security of its giant metal industries. African countries such as Guinea, a West African least developed nation boasting of the world’s largest and best quality bauxite, Democratic Republic of Congo which has enviably rich cobalt and copper deposits and Zimbabwe, Namibia and Mali where Chinese companies have invested around $4.5 billion in the past two years to acquire lithium mines have over the past many years become the playfield of the world’s second largest economy. Thanks to its aggressive mines acquisition in Africa, China is on its way to secure one-third of the world’s lithium mining capacity by 2025.

But it must be said at the same time, Chinese investors have not given a fair deal to people who had to vacate land for mines development by way of monetary compensation or honouring promises for jobs. Moreover, miners are accused of degrading environment, including harming the quality of water of rivers and streams. The contract concessions that Chinese companies have secured are typically opaque and tilted heavily in their favour. Beijing has now come under pressure from some African countries for a review of contracts that are heavily tilted in favour of China or where promised investments in infrastructure development have not materialised while it continues to ship out millions of tonnes of minerals. This recently led DRC President Felix Tshisekedi to travel to Beijing and meet with President Xi Jinping for renegotiation of a lopsided $6 billion infrastructure for minerals contract. Furthermore, Chinese miners are not found to be as committed to environment mitigation and worker safety and financial compensation as their counterparts in developed countries.

ALSO READ: Ukraine – A Dangerous War Rehearsal

No doubt, when African countries were in desperate need for funds China made that available for infrastructure and overall economic development. But many in the West see in the ever growing presence of China in Africa, particularly in resources sector a new kind of colonialism perpetrated in league with military juntas and autocrats. The Chinese economic aggression in China and elsewhere, particularly under the template Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has seen government agencies and private enterprises working in tandem.

At the same time, nearly a decade after its launch Xi Jinping’s ‘project of the century’ BRI looks slowing as lending slums and quite a few projects stall. Ahead of BRI sputtering, caused by the Covid pandemic and China’s own economic slowdown, China invested billions of dollars in its ambitious economic and political engagement with a host of countries. Through BRI Beijing is attempting to reach out to more than 140 countries.

The focus of the initiative is infrastructure development and at the same time export China’s industrial overcapacity to targeted countries. BRI launched in 2013 with great fanfare looks more ambitious than Marshall Plan. Not only the West but India and Japan too have reservations of China’s multinational and multi-modal infrastructure connectivity drive.

S Jaishankar, foreign minister of India, says: “Connectivity projects should respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of member states and respect international law.” In any case, India once again made its position clear on BRI at the recently held meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) when it refused to sign on the paragraph supporting XI Jinping’s much hyped project. The world will be watching how China will be infusing life in BRI, marked so far by predatory lending leaving loan receiving countries in debt traps, poor risk management and slippages in project execution.

Infusing life in BRI will be a major challenge since many aid receiving countries remain wary of Chinese designs. While the West and others will watch the progress of BRI with concern, there is major disappointment that Beijing is hardly doing anything to bring Vladimir Putin to senses to end the Ukrainian war. Nobody is counting Putin out yet but the Wagner mutiny has exposed the Russian tyrant’s growing weaknesses. China could have used the occasion to pull back Putin from heaving further miseries on Ukrainians. But that was not to be to the disappointment of the West, which is supporting Kyiv in its effort to repulse Russian aggression and in the world in general hoping for end of war.

All this and the growing support of their own people to pursue policies that will protect the interest of the US and its allies have emboldened President Biden, UK prime minister Rishi Sunak and other Western leaders to say emphatically that they are not to countenance aggressive political and economic designs of China primarily and also of the now much weakened Russia.

Biden recently said: “We seek competition, not conflict. Our economic policies are aimed at investing in American industry and technologies of the future, the same ones that Beijing is intent on dominating.” The US is favouring increasing trade restrictions on some high-tech equipment in order to ensure advanced technologies are not used against it and its allies. Not the US alone, the majority of NATO members are highly risk-averse around sharing high-technologies with China or participate with it in research collaboration in their development.

A public opinion polling in the UK by Freshwater Strategy shows that 68 per cent of British voters do not want Chinese participation in research on cyber security software and for DNA testing 51 per cent feel the same. At the same time, the US is considering banning US foreign direct investment in China where sensitive technologies are involved. It will not come as a surprise if the popular Chinese short video app TikTok gets banned in the US, which prioritizes security concerns over economic costs.

To all this the Chinese reaction runs like this: The American insensitivity and animus stem from its insecurity over China’s impressive rise as an economic power and with it political clout. The US and its allies are busy undermining China’s progress by doing “all-round containment, encirclement and suppression of China,” thinks Beijing. President Biden famous for his flip-flops said: “We seek competition, not conflict. Our economic policies are aimed at investing in American industry and technologies of the future, the same ones that Beijing is intent on dominating.” In recent times the US is putting increasing trade restrictions on many high-tech equipment so that China cannot use advanced technologies against America. But Taiwan, a self-ruled island off the coast of eastern China, could ever remain a flashpoint in Sino-American relations. Remember in September last when President Biden was asked if the US would come to defend Taiwan in case of China attack, he said: “Yes, if, in fact, there was an unprecedented attack.”

This, however, was not in consonance with the US official policy prompting Washington to clarify that it was not committed to military action on Taiwan. Beijing claims Taiwan as part of its territory and to underpin that it would conduct substantial military exercises around the self-governing island. Like the large-scale military drill that occurred in April, including the simulated sealing off the island in protest against the Taiwanese President’s US trip. Hopefully, China will stop at sabre-rattling and not make actual annexation attempt. Perhaps that explains the US strategic ambiguity not committing to defend Taiwan, but also not ruling out the option.
