Will See How Far Kejriwal Can Run: BJP Delhi Chief

Launching a scathing attack on Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal after the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) directed a CBI probe into alleged procurement and supply of spurious and non-standard drugs in government hospitals and mohalla clinics in the national capital, the BJP’s Delhi chief Virendraa Sachdeva on Friday said he wanted to see how far the AAP convenor can ‘run’ from ongoing investigations.

The Delhi CM has already skipped three summonses by the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) in connection with the excise policy case, accusing the BJP-led Centre of nursing ‘political vendetta’ and using central agencies at its disposal to hound and harass Opposition leaders.

Speaking to ANI on Friday, the BJP’s Delhi chief gunned for Kejriwal, saying, “We welcome the (MHA’s) decision to institute a CBI investigation into the supply of below-standard drugs to government hospitals in the national capital. The probe will throw new light on the reasons why such low-quality medicines were supplied to government hospitals, thereby endangering the health of patients. It will also reveal the extent of kickbacks to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his cabinet colleagues. This scam tantamounts to playing with public health. It is shameful.”

“We will see how far and how much Kejriwal can run from ongoing investigations,” Sachdeva added.

Earlier, on Friday, the MHA recommended a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the alleged procurement and supply of spurious and non-standard drugs in hospitals run by the Delhi government and mohalla clinics, sources said.

Further, according to sources, the MHA also directed the CBI to register an FIR into the supply of ‘sub-standard’ drugs to government hospitals in the Capital.

Delhi government’s Directorate of Vigilance had on December 26 written to the Union Home Ministry, requesting it to assign the investigation into the supply of “sub-standard” drugs to state-run hospitals to the CBI.

AAP leader and Vigilance Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj wrote to the Health Secretary over the allegation of sub-standard drugs at public hospitals and the primary health clinics, which the AAP government has often highlighted as an illustration of its model of governance, urging the latter to procure alternative arrangements.

“It has been brought to my notice that the Vigilance Department, GNCTD, has directed the secretary (health) to immediately remove the five drugs that were ‘not of standard quality’, from the stock where they have been supplied,” read Bhardwaj’s letter to the Health secretary.

“It was observed that in the recent past, certain essential consumables like absorbent cotton wool and rolled bandages were found ‘not of standard quality’ and were removed from the stock where they were supplied. The hospital authorities then did not make any alternative arrangements for the same and consequently, patients were inconvenienced since they were required to buy these consumables out of their own pockets,” it read further.

“Since the aforementioned five drugs, which are to be removed from the stock, are also essential in nature and required for treatment of the hypertensive disorder, seizure disorder, gastritis infections and respiratory diseases, hence, alternative arrangements should immediately be in place to make them available so that the general public is not inconvenienced and the treatment of patients is continued uninterrupted,” Bhardwaj wrote to the Health secretary.

“You are directed to inform me regarding the alternative arrangements made by DGHS and the hospitals for making available the five medicines, amlodipine, levetiracetam, pantoprazole, cephalexin and dexamethasone, of standard quality and their fresh stock position in the healthcare facilities, at the latest within a week,” the letter stated further.

Earlier, Delhi Lt Governor VK Saxena wrote to the Home ministry, recommending a CBI inquiry in the matter. (ANI)

World Looking At Us In A Different Light: Modi On ‘Veer Bal Diwas’

Headlining an event in the national capital to mark ‘Veer Bal Divas’, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday noted how fellow Indians were taking pride in the country’s heritage saying that the world, today, is viewing the country in a different light.

Advancing his vision of a new India, PM Modi said the country now has more confidence and belief in its people as well as their potential, dreams and aspirations.

Addressing the event to mark the martyrdom of the two sons of Sikh Guru Sri Gobind Singh, Prime Minister Modi said, “‘Veer Bal Diwas’ represents and symbolises a national urge to safeguard and carry forward the idea of Bharatiyata.”

“This year, America, Britain, Australia, New Zealand, the UAE and Greece have organised programmes related to ‘Veer Bal Diwas’,” PM Modi added.

“Even as we are taking pride in our national heritage, the world has started looking at us differently. The India of today has more confidence in the confidence, ability, and potential of its people,” PM Modi added.

The martyrdom of Mata Gujri, Guru Gobind Singh Ji and their four Sahibzadas inspires every Indian, he said.

After his address at the event, Prime Minister Modi flagged off a youth march to mark ‘Veer Baal Diwas’.

The government would also organise participatory programmes all over the country to inform and educate the citizens, especially young children, about the exemplary courage of the Sahibzades (the two young Khalsas who are commemorated on this day).

A digital exhibition detailing the life story and sacrifice of the Sahibzades will be displayed in schools and childcare institutions across the country. A film on ‘Veer Baal Diwas’ will also be screened nationwide.

New National Alliance Committee

Inaugural Meet Of Cong’s New National Alliance Committee Today

The first meeting of the newly formed National Alliance Committee of the Congress will be held in the national capital on Saturday.

The meeting is scheduled to be held at 11.30 am, party sources informed.

Earlier, on Tuesday, the grand old party announced the formation of the new panel to engage like-minded political outfits in discussions for possible alliances going into next year’s Lok Sabha elections.

The committee has also been mandated to hold discussions with the Congress’s partners in the Opposition bloc — INDIA –as well as other like-minded partners for the allocation of seats for the crucial electoral battle.

While the partners in the INDIA bloc came together for their fourth meeting recently, in light of the saffron sweep in the heartland states of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, the potentially prickly issue of seat sharing was left unaddressed.

However, two top alliance leaders — West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her Delhi counterpart Arvind Kejriwal — proposed Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge as the Bloc’s national face opposite Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the next general elections.

“In the run-up to the general election 2024, the Congress president has constituted a National Alliance Committee with immediate effect,” the Congress said in a statement.

The members of the National Alliance Committee include senior party leader Mukul Wasnik, former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot and former Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel.

Former Union Minister Salman Khurshid and senior leader Mohan Prakash are also part of the National Alliance Committee.

The fourth meeting of the INDIA bloc concluded in Delhi on December 19 with the passing of the resolution on Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and the suspension of MPs from Parliament.

The 28 parties participated in our fourth meeting and kept their thoughts before the committee of the alliance. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said that a resolution has been passed that the suspension of MPs is undemocratic.

Kharge also stated that any decision on the prime ministerial candidate would be made after the elections.

INDIA (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance) parties are seeking to put up a united challenge against the BJP-led NDA in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

The first meeting of the joint opposition convened in Patna on June 23 and the second meeting was held in Bengaluru on July 17-18. The third meeting happened in Mumbai on August 31-September 1.

In the Mumbai meeting, the opposition parties adopted resolutions to collectively contest the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections while announcing that seat-sharing arrangements would be finalized as soon as possible in a spirit of give-and-take. (ANI)

Delhi: Dense Fog Envelopes City, Reducing Visibility

As vast swathes of North India continued to reel under the effects of the falling mercury, a thick layer of fog enveloped the national capital on Saturday, affecting visibility.

According to the India Meteorological Department, the minimum temperature at Palam was recorded at 14°C while Palam logged 12.2°C.

As the chill tightened its grip on the national capital, many were seen huddling around bonfires to keep themselves warm.

In the face of the biting cold, many were also seen taking refuge at a night shelter at AIIMS.

Similar scenes were also in evidence elsewhere, with locals under heavy blankets and quilts cooped up at night shelters in the Lodhi Road area.

Locals out cycling or taking morning walks said the mercury fell significantly in the early hours of Saturday and the cold was extreme.

“It’s getting tougher for us to take morning strolls as the cold is extreme. The fog and pollution are further compounding the woes of regular commuters and morning walkers. We are having step outdoors wearing masks to keep out health problems caused because of pollution,” a local told ANI on Saturday.

The overall Air Quality Index (AQI) of Delhi, according to SAFAR-India (System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research), was recorded in the ‘Very Poor’ range at 8.07 am on Saturday.

On Thursday, the minimum temperature in the national capital was recorded at 7.8°C, according to the India Metrological Department (IMD).

The national weather forecasting agency earlier said the minimum temperature across North India was likely to increase by 2-3 degrees Celsius in Northern India over the next three days.

Speaking to ANI on Thursday, Mahesh Kumar, an autorickshaw driver from Bihar, said the prevailing cold weather was affecting their daily chores.

“Passengers are few and far between these days because of the cold. The chill makes us stay put inside our vehicles for the better part of the day,” Kumar said, adding that they do most of their trips through the night till the crack of dawn when the cold is, perhaps, at its worst.

Meanwhile, the overall Air Quality Index (AQI) of Delhi, as per SAFAR-India (System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research), was recorded in the poor category on Thursday morning. (ANI)

Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc

INDIA Bloc Leaders Brace For Nationwide Protest Against Suspension Of MPs

Leaders of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc are scheduled to hold a protest against the suspension of 146 opposition MPs here in the national capital on Friday.

The Members of Parliament, suspended from the Parliament’s Winter Session, which was adjourned sine die on Thursday, will protest at the Jantar Mantar at 11 am.

Also, a nationwide protest has also been scheduled at all district headquarters by the Congress Party today.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, who was among the suspended lawmakers, on Thursday said that the Friday protest of the INDIA bloc will be staged in all the states.

“It’s appropriate to protest and all of us will be at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. The INDIA alliance protest will happen everywhere tomorrow (Friday) morning in all the states because we want to show the public that if they’d run Parliament like this and won’t listen to the opposition then they are ruining the democracy,” he had said.

Aam Aadmi Party MPs including ND Gupta, Sandeep Pathak, Sant Balbir Seecehwal, and Sanjeev Arora will join the INDIA bloc protest today.

A total of 146 MPs — 100 from Lok Sabha and 46 from Rajya Sabha — are currently suspended so far for creating a ruckus and disrupting proceedings in both Houses, while they were demanding a statement from Union Minister Amit Shah about the Parliament security breach incident.

Earlier on Thursday, after the conclusion of the 262nd Session of the Rajya Sabha, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar said that he is pained to state that nearly 22 hours of the Upper House were lost due to avoidable disruptions.

“I am pained to state that nearly 22 hours were lost due to avoidable disruptions adversely impacting our overall productivity that finally stood at 79 percent. Weaponizing disruptions and disturbance as a political strategy doesn’t resonate with our constitutional obligation of keeping the interest of people at large above any other political considerations,” the Rajya Sabha Chairman said.

Earlier on Thursday, while the proceedings of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were underway, the suspended MPs took out a march from the Parliament building to Vijay Chowk to protest against the bulk suspension of opposition lawmakers.

Taking part in the protest march, John Brittas of CPI(M), said, the Centre should now amend the Constitution to say that India is a monarchy.

“We are protesting against the brutal killing of the democracy; the democracy has been massacred. You could see the Union Home Minister unilaterally; this is Opposition-Mukt Parliament. They (the Centre) should now amend the Constitution to say that India is a monarchy,” he said while speaking to ANI. (ANI)

INDIA Bloc MPs To Hold March From Vijay Chowk To Parliament Tomorrow

The Parliamentarians of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc will hold a march from Parliament House to Vijay Chowk in the national capital on the issue of suspension of members in both Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha.

The floor leaders of the INDIA bloc will hold a meeting on Thursday morning at the office of Rajya Sabha Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge.

Earlier today, two more opposition MPs were suspended from Lok Sabha. With this, the total number of suspensions in Parliament has reached 143.

The action against suspended MPs came after the House faced repeated adjournments, with opposition members raising slogans and displaying placards over their demands. They have been demanding a statement from Home Minister Amit Shah over the Parliament security breach on December 13.

TMC leader Kalyan Banerjee’s derisively mimicry of Dhankhar during the opposition’s protest on the stairs of Parliament on Tuesday against the suspension of MPs has drawn strong condemnation from the ruling BJP.

Hitting out at the media for not discussing the suspension of members extensively, Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said that the media is entirely focused on showing the mimicry incident and not highlighting the pain and agony of the suspended MPs, adding that What can be done if the “media is totally running on one line”.

Addressing reporters in New Delhi, Rahul Gandhi said, “MPs were sitting there, I shot their video. My video is on my phone. The media is showing it. Nobody has said anything.150 of our MPs have been thrown out (of the House) but there is no discussion on that in the media. There is no discussion on Adani, no discussion on Rafale, no discussion on unemployment.”

“Our MPs are disheartened and sitting outside. Please show their side also. What can we do if you are totally running on one line,” he added.

The controversy erupted after suspended Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee, during the protest with other suspended MPs at Parliament’s Makar Dwar, was seen mimicking Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, while Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was seen filming the Trinamool MP using his phone. (ANI)

INDIA Bloc Meeting Begins

The fourth meeting of the ‘Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc is underway in the national capital on Tuesday.

The meeting comes amid the political tensions escalating between the Opposition and the BJP-led central government over the demand of Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement over the Parliament security breach.

AN unprecedented number of MPs, a total of 141, were suspended from the Parliament.

On the prevailing situation, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is in the national capital to meet PM Modi, said, “The voices of the people have been choked. Let them suspend the House first. They have no moral right to run this House to suspend the opposition fully…They will run a mockery, nothing else. It is a mockery of democracy.”

“I think all will be together. There is an opportunity to discuss this seat-sharing) matter…Tomorrow is a great opportunity to discuss it in detail. The majority of political parties will agree to one-to-one seat sharing; maybe one or two may not agree…I don’t have any motto or vendetta to not walk with anybody,” West Bengal CM.

Responding to the delay in seat sharing in INDIA alliance, West Bengal CM said that “it s not late. Better late than never.”

On delay in seat sharing within INDIA alliance, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee says, “It is not late. Better late than never…”

When asked if she wants an alliance with Congress in West Bengal, CM Banerjee said that she has no problem if the grand old party has genuine things.

“Somebody must bell the cat…I don’t have any problem if they have genuine things. But in West Bengal, they have only two seats. I am open to talk and discuss,” she added.

The alliance, led by the Congress, took shape with the primary objective of mounting a combined challenge to the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in next year’s general elections.

Seat-sharing for next year’s Lok Sabha elections is likely to figure prominently in the discussions at the huddle, according to sources.

Seat sharing for the Lok Sabha polls, which are just four months away, is likely to be at the top of the agenda for the next INDIA bloc meeting and will be crucial for the Congress, especially after its poll drubbing in the heartland states of Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh.

The first meeting of the joint opposition convened in Patna on June 23 and the second meeting was held in Bengaluru on July 17-18. The third meeting happened in Mumbai on August 31-September 1.

INDIA or ‘Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance’ is a group of opposition parties, including the Congress. The parties have come together to take on the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which is led by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and prevent it from winning a third straight term at the Centre in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

In the Mumbai meeting, the opposition parties adopted resolutions to collectively contest the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections while announcing that seat-sharing arrangements would be finalized as soon as possible through a spirit of give-and-take.

The theme chosen by the INDIA bloc for the elections is “Judega Bharat, Jeetega India” (India will unite, India will win) to take on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government. (ANI)

Cold Tightens Grip On NCR, Mini Tem 10.8 °C

Amid the biting chill prevailing in the entire North Indian belt, the cold extended its grip on the national capital on Tuesday, with the minimum temperature recorded at 10.8 degrees Celsius at Palam.

As the city woke up to a chilly morning, Sri Krishan, who has been in the habit of taking a stroll near the India Gate for the last 50 years, said the prevailing cold, combined with fog and pollution, is adding to the distress of locals battling asthma or other respiratory problems.

“Temperature (24-hr Tendency ) over Delhi recorded at 0530 hrs IST of today, The 19th Dec.: Palam: 10.8 (-0.4) Safdarjung: 10.2 (+2.2),” read a post on the official X handle of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday.

Dense fog also engulfed vast swathes of the national capital amid the biting cold on Tuesday morning.

“Owing to the cold weather and persistent pollution, locals, especially asthma patients, are grappling with problems. Climate change is also contributing to the prevailing weather in the city,” said Shubh Bhargav, another resident.

“My health has been brittle since the Covid-19 pandemic. My body tends to tire quickly while walking,” another youth told ANI, pointing to pollution as one of the critical contributors to the indifferent air quality in the national capital.

Earlier, a minimum temperature of 6.8 degrees Celsius was recorded by the IMD at Delhi’s Lodhi Road on Monday morning.

The Safdarjung area logged a minimum temperature of 7.1 degrees, which was 1 degree below the normal for this time of the year, on Monday. The minimum temperature is predicted to range between 5 degrees and 8 degrees over this week, with Friday, December 22, being predicted to have the lowest temperature at 5 degrees, according to the MeT.

Earlier, Indian Meteorological Department scientist Naresh Kumar held a briefing on the weather change expected in northwest India due to a Western disturbance in the Himalayan region.

“Right now, the temperature is normal in northwest India. However, they may fall by about one to two degrees in the next two days and two to three degrees in the eastern part of the country,” Kumar told ANI on Monday. (ANI)
