Expecting More Insurgent Groups To Join: Biren Invoking UNLF Peace Accord

As the Central and Manipur governments have signed a peace agreement with the United National Liberation Front (UNLF), to renounce violence and join the mainstream, Chief Minister Biren Singh hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday for the same and expressed hope on more insurgent groups to come forward and join the peace-making process.

The peace agreement was signed with the state’s oldest valley-based militant group on November 29 in the national capital in the presence of Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla and some members of the UNLF.

Manipur CM N Biren Singh was accorded a hero’s welcome by cabinet colleagues, legislators and party workers on his return today from New Delhi, two days after the ceasefire agreement signing.

Speaking to ANI on the peace accord, CM Biren Singh said, “It was historic for Manipur. This group was established around 1964 and no peace initiation has taken place since then. Fortunately, it happened this time.”

The peace agreement signed with the UNLF by the Centre and the Manipur government marks the end of a six-decade-long armed movement.

“We were trying to negotiate continuously for the peace agreement for the last 3-4 years under the leadership of PM Modi. Finally, we did it. This agreement is a great achievement for the Indian government as well as the Manipur government. Our Home Minister Amit Shah ji’s guidance also facilitated it,” he added.

He further asserted that more insurgent groups who haven’t signed the accord will follow suit with UNLF and follow the path to peace.

“With this large group joining the peace process, we are expecting more insurgent groups who have not signed their accord with the government of India to join and follow the path of peace,” CM Biren Singh said.

“Then the peace will be restored in Manipur also and we can march ahead in the development, for the welfare of the state, for the welfare of the country. That is my expectation. That is why I am trying very hard under the guidance of PM Modi and Amit Shah,” he added.

The UNLF was formed in 1964 and has been operating both within and outside Indian Territory. The agreement is poised to give a fillip to usher in a new era of peace in the North East in general and Manipur in particular.

The agreement will not only bring an end to hostilities between UNLF and security forces, which have claimed precious lives on both sides over the last more than half a century but also provide an opportunity to address the longstanding concerns of the community.

It is hoped that the return of UNLF to the mainstream will also encourage other valley-based armed groups to participate in the peace process in due course.

A Peace Monitoring Committee (PMC) will be constituted to oversee the enforcement of the agreed ground rules. The development is likely to be a significant step in restoring peace and normalcy in the state.

In a statement, the Ministry of Home Affairs also said that the agreement is poised to usher in a new era of peace in the Northeast in general and Manipur in particular.

The MHA, in its statement, added that in line with the vision of Prime Minister Modi and under the guidance of the Union Home Minister, the Centre has signed agreements with several armed groups of the North East region since 2014 to end militancy and promote development.

Further, as per the statement, this is the first time a valley-based Manipuri armed group has agreed to return to the mainstream by abjuring violence and agreeing to honour the Constitution of India and the laws of the land.

Terming it a landmark achievement, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that the peace agreement realised PM Modi’s vision of all-inclusive development and providing a better future to the youth in Northeast India. (ANI)

The second side event, co-hosted by India and Sweden, is the launch of LeadIT 2.0, essentially a Leadership Group for Industry Transition.

In the three decades since the Rio Summit and the launch of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Conference of the Parties to the Convention (COP) has convened member countries every year to determine ambition and responsibilities, and identify and assess climate measures.

The 21st session of the COP (COP21) led to the Paris Agreement, which mobilized global collective action to limit the global temperature increase to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels by 2100, and to act to adapt to the already existing effects of climate change. (ANI)

Cabinet Approves Garib Kalyan Food Grain Programme For Another 5 Years

Union cabinet meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday approved that the central government will provide free grains to eligible citizens under the public distribution scheme for another five years.

The PM Garib Kalyan Yojana was initially started during the start of the Covid pandemic, where ration card holders were entitled to receive an additional five kg grains (wheat or rice of individual’s choice). Also, chana was also being provided as part of the additional food distribution programme.

The centre’s intention to extend the PM Garib Kalyan Yojana was mentioned by Prime Minister Modi himself during his election rallies earlier this month.

The Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) was launched in April 2020 with the specific purpose of ameliorating the hardships faced by the poor and needy due to economic disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.

Initially, in 2020-21, the PMGKAY scheme was announced only for a period of three months (April- June 2020), however, it was extended until December 2022 in seven consecutive phases.

It benefitted 80 crore beneficiaries.

During an election rally in Durg on November 4, Chhattisgarh the Prime Minister had made the announcement of the decision to extend the free ration scheme.

“I have decided that the BJP government will extend the scheme of providing free ration to 80 crore poor people of the country for the next 5 years. Your affections and blessings give me the power to take such decisions, ” PM Modi had said. The Prime Minister had said that the money saved by the poor through the extension of scheme will help them meet other needs. He had said that guarantee by Modi means the promise will be fulfilled.

Earlier, the Central Government had decided to remove the financial burden of the poor beneficiaries and to ensure nationwide uniformity and effective implementation of NFSA, and had decided to provide foodgrains free of cost to the beneficiaries covered under NFSA, 2013, for a period of one year, beginning January 01, 2023. Udhampur Girl Writes To Modi, Urges Him To Build Better Roads To School

Following in the footsteps of little Seerat Naaz, a schoolgirl from the Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir, who urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to lift her school from dire straits and ensure better learning ambience and infrastructure for herself and her mates in a viral video, a ‘Divyang’ (disabled) girl from Udhampur district has now come forward with a similar request for the country’s most powerful leader.

Introducing herself only by her first name Kajal, the girl has written to Prime Minister Modi, urging him to build better roads leading to her school in the Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir.

In her letter, she said she studies in the sixth standard at the Government Middle School in Meldi, which comes within the administrative jurisdiction of Fangyal panchayat of the Udhampur district.

Sharing her everyday ordeal and that of her friends at school, Kajal, in her letter to PM Modi, said such is the prevailing state of the only approach road to the institution that she fell down many times while commuting on it.

“I fell down many times on this road on my way to school. Such is the prevailing state of the road that it has become nothing short of a risk for me and my friends commuting on it. I urge you (PM Modi) to build us better roads leading to the school,” little Kajal said in her letter.

Kajal’s impassioned letter to the country’s most powerful leader has drawn the spotlight on the plight of students studying at this government school.

The school houses a total of 101 students, including many who are differently abled. With the only approach road to the school rendered in a non-motorable state currently, the students have no option but to walk to school, risking falls and accidents.

Ranjeet Singh Kotwal, the assistant district development commissioner in Udhampur, took note of Kajal’s plight and her desperate appeal for better roads to school.

Speaking to ANI, Kotwal said, “I thank her for bringing this matter to our notice through her letter (to PM Modi). I will hold immediate discussions with the deputy commissioner and arrange all amenities either through my department or any other. I will take this matter forward with the officials concerned and ensure that her concerns are addressed at the earliest.” (ANI)

Cong, KCR Are Equal Sinners In Destroying Telangana: Modi

In a run-up to the assembly elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hit out at the Congress party and the ruling Bharatiya Rashtra Samithi while addressing a public rally at Mahabubabad in Telangana on Monday.

“Both Congress and KCR are equal sinners in destroying Telangana. So, the people of Telangana can’t let in another disease after ousting one – I have seen this everywhere in the state. The trust of Telangana is in the BJP,” PM Modi said.

He further asserted confidence in the BJP winning the mandate in Telangana and said that the party’s Chief Minister in the state will be from the BC (Backward Class) community.

The Prime Minister alleged that the Congress and Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao let down the state and only BJP can help and fix Telangana.

“The four wheels and the steering of BRS’ ‘car’ are no different from the ‘hand’ of Congress. Both these parties indulge in appeasement on the basis of religion. Both of them boosted corruption. Both of them promoted dynasty politics. Both of them took appeasement to new heights,” he said.

“Wherever both these parties remained (in power), law and order got destroyed. Both parties betrayed the Dalits and the BC community. It is only BJP that is truly empowering the tribal community and SC community,” he added.

PM Modi said that Telangana is going to create new history by overthrowing the KCR government. He also vowed to initiate an investigation into the scams under the BRS government once the BJP comes to power in the state.

“The people of Telangana are gearing up to overthrow the KCR government. Telangana is going to create a New History! BJP considers this its responsibility to free Telangana from the clutches of BRS. All scams of KCR that he did here will be probed by the BJP Government. Those who betrayed the poor and youth of Telangana will not be spared,” the PM said.

PM Modi also accused CM KCR of ‘branding’ the state as ‘superstitious’ while it identifies with tradition and technology.

He added that since BJP refused to be ‘friends’ with BRS, CM KCR has been abusing him.

“KCR realised the increasing power of BJP much earlier. For a long time, he was making an effort to strike a friendship with the BJP. Once, when he came to Delhi, KCR met me and made the same request,” he said.

“BJP can never work against the wishes of the people of Telangana. Ever since BJP turned down KCR, BRS has been baffled. The party doesn’t lose any opportunity to abuse me. BRS knows that Modi will never let it anywhere near BJP. This is Modi’s guarantee,” PM Modi added.

The Prime Minister is in the state promoting BJP’s candidates as the state is slated to be held on November 30. Apart from PM Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP national president JP Nadda are also holding public rallies and roadshows in the state in an attempt to woo the voters.

All major political parties in the state, including Congress, BJP and BRS, have stepped up their campaigning processes with the last date of campaigning on Tuesday before the state goes to polls on November 30.

In the last Assembly elections in 2018, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), previously known as Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), won 88 of the 119 seats, hogging 47.4 per cent of the total vote share.

The Congress came in a distant second with just 19 seats, while the BJP drew a blank. (ANI)

Modi Urges People To Shun Marriages Abroad; Hold Them In India

Pushing further the Central government’s ‘Vocal for Local’ initiative, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday citizens not to organise weddings abroad, and urged people of the country to hold wedding celebrations in the country.

PM Modi, while addressing the nation in the latest edition of his monthly radio broadcast ‘Mann Ki Baat on Sunday urged people to give importance to products made in India only during shopping for weddings.

“The wedding season as well has commenced now. Some trade organisations estimate that there could be a business of around Rs 5 lakh crore during this wedding season. While shopping for weddings, all of you should give importance to products made in India only,” the PM said.

He further said that the poor people will get an opportunity to render some service if the weddings are arranged in the country.

“And yes, since the topic of marriage has come up, one thing has been troubling me off and on for a long time…. and if I don’t open up my heart’s pain to my family members, who else do I do it with? Just ponder… these days a new milieu is being created by some families to go abroad and conduct weddings. Is this at all necessary? If we celebrate the festivities of marriages on Indian soil, amid the people of India, the country’s money will remain in the country. The people of the country will get an opportunity to render some service or the other at your wedding… Can you extrapolate on this mission of ‘Vocal for Local’? Why don’t we hold such wedding ceremonies in our own country?” the PM added.

The PM further said that the year 2023 marks the second consecutive year when the trend of buying some goods through cash payments on the occasion of Diwali is gradually on the decline.

“That means, people are making more and more digital payments now,” he added.

PM Modi, while commemorating the victims on the 15th anniversary of the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai, added, “We can never forget the 26th of November. It was on this very day that the country came under the dastardliest terror attack. The terrorists (from Pakistan) spelt fear not just in Mumbai but across the country. However, it was our combined fortitude and resilience that made us rise again from the ordeal inflicted on us by the terrorists and crush terror with full strength and resolve.”

Congratulating countrymen on the occasion of Constitution Day, said it was unfortunate that the first amendment of the Constitution ‘pertained to curtailing’ the freedom of speech and expression.

“In keeping with the changing times, circumstances and requirements of the country, previous governments (at the Centre) carried out amendments (to the Constitution) at different times. However, it is our misfortune that the first amendment of the Constitution pertained to curtailing the freedom of speech and expression,” PM Modi said during the 107th edition of his monthly radio address on Sunday.

“However, through the 44th amendment, the wrongs committed during the Emergency (during the Prime Ministership of Indira Gandhi) were duly rectified,” PM Modi noted during his address. (ANI)

India Australia WC Modi Sehwag

You Don’t Lose WC Final Because Of Any Single Individual: Sehwag

Weighing in on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the India dressing room after skipper and his ‘Men in Blue’ went down to Australia in the World Cup, dashing a billion hopes of a third world crown in the 50-over format, former opener Virender Sehwag on Saturday hailed what he called a ‘rare gesture’ by the country’s most powerful leader to lift the spirits in the change room.

Pictures from the Indian dressing room went viral, showing PM Modi shaking hands with the players and sharing a warm hug with speedster Mohammad Shami, who emerged as the highest wicket-taker in the tournament.

PM Modi commended how the team went 10 matches unbeaten in the tournament before finally coming unstuck in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Speaking to ANI, Sehwag said, “It is very rare for a prime minister to meet players in the dressing room and lift their spirits after a crushing defeat. I have never seen a prime minister taking time out of his busy schedule to lend a shoulder to players heartbroken after a defeat. It was an incredible gesture by Prime Minister Modi to visit the dressing room and boost the morale of the boys. It was a time when the boys needed some hand-holding, a gesture of solidarity and support. In such lows, you need someone to comfort you like family members do. I believe it was a touching gesture that will go a long way to motivating our boys ahead of future engagements, especially multilateral events. It will motivate us to cross the final hurdle next time.”

Amid the uproar around the statements of some Opposition leaders, blaming PM Modi’s attendance in the final for the team’s defeat in the World Cup final, the former India batting stalwart and ICC Hall-of-Famer said, “You don’t lose a World Cup final because of any single individual. Our loss to Australia will spur us to chase glory in the next World Cup final.”

Raising the hackles of the BJP, Congress leader Rahul, addressing a public event in Rajasthan’s Barmer, blamed India’s defeat on PM Modi, calling him a ‘Panauti’ (one who brings bad luck).

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also took a dig at PM Modi, claiming that India would have won had the World Cup final been hosted at Wankhede (the venue for the 2011 World Cup final that India won) or the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, instead of a stadium named after himself.

In the video of PM Modi’s visit to the India dressing room, he was seen holding the hands of skipper Rohit Sharma and batting talisman Virat Kohli, who aggregated the most runs at the event.

PM Modi was heard exhorting them to smile as the country was watching them. “Desh aap ko dekh raha hai (the country is watching you),” PM Modi told Rohit and Virat inside the dressing room.

Scoffing at the Opposition leaders over their remarks, the former India opener said, “Everyone was behind this team when they were doing so well. And, on a rare bad in office, when they lost the final, everyone should have come out in their support instead of making such remarks. There are few PMs or leaders who visit a dressing room after a defeat. Hence, for PM Modi to visit our boys and lift their spirits would serve as an inspiration not just for cricket but also for other sports. It will serve as a huge motivation.”

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri, too, hailed PM Modi’s gesture of visiting the dressing room and catching up with the ‘Men in Blue’.

“I think it’s an outstanding gesture simply because I know what a dressing room feels like and I have been in that dressing room for more than seven years as a coach of India, apart from many years as a cricketer. It is a gut-wrenching feeling and when you are down. When you get someone like the Prime Minister of the country coming and visiting the dressing room, it is something massive because it can lift the spirits of the players. This is no ordinary man walking in. When you have Prime Minister of a country walking into the dressing room, it is special. I know what the players would have felt like, I know what I would have felt like you know if I was a coach of India in that moment,” Shastri said. (ANI)

(ANI)
