Oppn Leaders Meet Prez Over Campus Crackdown

Opposition leaders including Congress President Sonia Gandhi met President Ram Nath Kovind on Tuesday to lodge their protest over police action against students over the Citizenship Amendment Bill and said the protests against the legislation were spreading throughout the country.

Talking to media persons after meeting the President, Sonia Gandhi said they had sought his intervention against the legislation.

“All of us representatives of different parties, 12 of them, met the President to seek his intervention over the situation,” she said.

She accused the Centre of “suppressing voice of people”.

The Congress chief said the BJP and Modi government “seems to have no compunction when it comes to shutting down people’s voices and implement legislation which does not seem to be acceptable to us and the people in the democracy”.

She said apart from protests in Northeast, the protests were being held in different parts of the country and may spread further.

“It is a very serious situation,” she said.

The Congress chief said they were “anguished by the manner the police had dealt with a peaceful demonstration”.

“In Delhi, police entered Jamia Millia Islamia University’s women hostel and dragged students out. They mercilessly beat up other students as well who were demonstrating there. It is their democratic right to protest,” she said.

Cong Instigating Muslims Against Citizenship Law: PM

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday hit out at the Congress party and its allies over the Citizenship Amendment Act saying they are instigating Muslims for political purposes.

Speaking at his last rally in the Jharkhand assembly elections in Barhait, Modi said, “The Citizenship Amendment Act does not take away any rights of an Indian citizen or cause any harm. The Congress and its allies are instigating Muslims for political purposes.”

“This act is for those people who have been in a very miserable condition for a long time. The Act we made is for the people who have been suffering religious persecution in the three neighbouring countries and have come to India because of it. So where is the infringement of rights of any Indian Muslim or any other Indian?” the Prime Minister asked.

“I challenge the Congress and their allies that if they have the guts they should openly declare that they will give Indian citizenship to every Pakistani citizen and that they will bring back Article 370 in Jammu-Kashmir and Ladakh,” Modi said.

“Stop this guerilla politics. The Indian Constitution is our only holy book. I appeal to the youth in colleges to debate our policies, protest democratically. We will listen to you. But some political parties and urban Naxals are firing from your shoulder,” Modi added.

Pak Court Gives Musharraf Death Sentence For Treason

In a first in Pakistan’s history, a special court on Tuesday handed a death sentence to former military dictator Pervez Musharraf in a high treason case.

The court comprising Peshawar High Court Chief Justice Waqar Ahmad Seth, Justice Nazar Akbar of the Sindh High Court (SHC) and Justice Shahid Karim of the Lahore High Court (LHC) took up the high treason case against Musharraf earlier today.

The special court earlier this month had said that it would announce the verdict in the case on December 17. The court on November 19 concluded the trial proceedings in the case against Musharraf for declaring a state emergency on November 3, 2007.

The court was scheduled to announce the verdict on November 28 on the basis of the available record but the Islamabad High Court halted the verdict announcement after Prime Minister Imran Khan-led government filed a petition against the announcement.

Since 2016, Musharraf has been living in a self-imposed exile in Dubai for “seeking medical treatment” and has not returned to the country since. He is wanted by authorities in connection to the case.

The high treason trial of the former leader has been pending since December 2013 when he was booked in the case.

He was indicted on March 31, 2014 and the prosecution had tabled the entire evidence before the special court in September the same year.

However, due to litigation at appellate forums, Musharraf’s trial lingered on and he left Pakistan in March 2016 “to seek medical treatment.”

The former Pakistan President was then declared an absconder as he failed to appear in court despite repeated summons and the court issued a directive to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to arrest him. (ANI)

Protests Erupt In East Delhi Over Citizenship Act

An anti-citizenship law protest turned violent in East Delhi’s Seelampur area, forcing police to use tear gas shells to disperse the protestors who torched two buses on Tuesday.

The police also closed vehicular movement on the 66 feet Road which connects Seelampur with Jafrabad (both carriageways) due to demonstration.

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has also ordered to shut entry and exit gates of five metro stations in and around the area.

“Entry and exit gates of Welcome, Jaffrabad, Maujpur-Babarpur, Seelampur and Gokulpuri are closed. Trains won’t be halting at these stations,” the DMRC said in a tweet.

According to sources in the police, the protesters gathered around 1:15 pm and marched towards Seelampur. “Initially the protest was peaceful but suddenly it turned violent while the mob was dispersing,” the sources said.

The newly-enacted Citizenship Amendment Act grants citizenship to non-Muslims of Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh who fled religious persecution and arrived in India until December 31, 2014.

The protest in the Seelampur area comes two days after police-protestors clashes erupted in Jamia Millia Islamia university, with police drawing flak over using force on the university students.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have appealed people to maintain peace and tranquillity.

Rahul’s Return To Cong Helm Will Harm Party Prospects

Last week when Rahul Gandhi took centre stage at a huge rally in Delhi, organised by the Congress to highlight the Narendra Modi government’s mismanagement of the country’s economy, it was seen as a clear message that he would soon be back as party chief.

In fact, grounds were being prepared for the Nehru-Gandhi scion’s return in the days ahead of this meeting. Several leaders went on record to say that Rahul Gandhi must helm the party again as he is the only leader who can mount a serious challenge to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Making a vociferous pitch for his return, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel declared, “If there is any leader in the Congress, it is Rahul Gandhi. No one else but Rahul Gandhi…. He is honest and takes responsibility. He took responsibility for the party’s defeat in the Lok Sabha elections and resigned.”

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and Congress general secretary KC Venugopal also spoke in the same vein shortly thereafter. Pointing out that there was a growing demand from party workers that Rahul Gandhi should once again take charge of the party, the two leaders maintained that the Congress needs his leadership now, especially when the country is going through such a critical phase.

Rahul Gandhi had stepped down as Congress president after the party’s disastrous performance in the May 2019 Lok Sabha election. After three months of uncertainty and internal debate, Sonia Gandhi was eventually persuaded to helm the party once again. It was, however, clarified then that she would be an interim president. Sonia Gandhi’s poor health, it was said, does not allow her to continue as party chief for too long.

Since it is an acknowledged fact that Sonia Gandhi’s tenure is only a holding operation, an orchestrated campaign is being mounted within the Congress to press for Rahul Gandhi’s return. This drive is said to have Sonia Gandhi’s blessings as she is keen that her son should take charge of the party before he is rendered politically irrelevant, which is bound to happen if Rahul Gandhi is not seen or heard for a prolonged period.

In such a situation, even sycophant Congress workers will move on and find themselves another Godfather. Sonia Gandhi obviously wants to forestall any such possibility. She must have been alerted to this after the results of the Haryana and Maharashtra assembly polls pointed to the dispensability of the Gandhis. Sonia Gandhi did not campaign in these elections while Rahul Gandhi addressed barely a couple of meetings. And yet, the poll outcome in Haryana proved to be well beyond everyone’s expectations, proving that the Congress has the potential to bounce back in the states if the party has a band of strong, credible and effective regional satraps. The story in Maharashtra may have been different if the Congress had effective leaders in the state.

However, Sonia Gandhi’s “son-preference” could well prove costly for the Congress. Thanks to the Bharatiya Janata Party’s persistent campaign against the Gandhi “dynasty” has now become a dirty word. Similarly, the saffron party’s ongoing efforts to lampoon Rahul Gandhi have also succeeded as the fifth-generation dynast of the Nehru-Gandhi family is constantly ridiculed by the people who are not just not willing to accept him as a future leader. Rahul Gandhi’s return will, once again, activate the BJP’s campaign against him and dynastic politics. This also helps the BJP deflect attention from the Modi government’s weak points like the state of the economy.

Having found a soft target in Rahul Gandhi, the BJP finds it difficult to mount an offensive against the Congress if he is not leading the party. This was proved during the past few months when Rahul Gandhi stayed under the radar and was almost invisible. The BJP was a trifle lost as it struggled to mount an effective offensive against the Congress with Rahul Gandhi no longer heading it.

Rahul Gandhi’s return will also resurrect the controversy over dynastic politics. The public, at large, has developed an aversion to the Congress precisely for this reason. Though other political parties, including the BJP, have their fair share of dynasts, the Congress is singled out for attack because the grand old party has, over the years, been reduced to a “family firm”, like the country’s regional parties where the leadership positions are reserved only for family members. A younger India, which has shed the old “Raja-Praja” concept, wants leaders with whom they can connect. And more importantly, the people are now judging leaders on the basis of their performance – they are no longer enamored by powerful political dynasties. They want to see results and want leaders who can deliver and meet their aspirations.

While the people are ready to give the Congress a chance provided it sheds its dependence on the Gandhis, the party is unable and unwilling to do so. On the other hand, Congress workers justify their need to continue with the Nehru-Gandhi family at the helm on the ground that it wins them elections and keeps the party united.

However, Rahul Gandhi, and, to some extent even Sonia Gandhi, has failed on both counts. Rahul Gandhi has been unable to deliver an electoral victory for the Congress. Sonia Gandhi has the distinction of winning two consecutive Lok Sabha elections but it is also a fact that it was under her leadership that the Congress slumped from 206 to 44 seats.

It is also a fallacy that the Gandhi family ensures a degree of unity in the Congress. After all, the party has witnessed a steady erosion in its ranks and this includes Mamata Banerjee, Jagan Reddy and Sharad Pawar who have established themselves as leaders in their own right outside the Congress.

If the Congress still persists with its “Rahul Laao, Desh Bachaao” campaign, it will be doing so at its own peril. Forget the country, the Congress leaders will have to strive hard to first save the party.

‘When Students Ask Questions, Govt Responds With Batons, Teargas’

Abu Mohammad, a first year student of Journalism in Jamia Millia University recounts how police chased them inside the campus and did not spare even girl students. Abu calls it a black day in the history for the university

December 15 will be counted as a Black Day in the history for Jamia Millia Islamia University and India as a whole. The scenes around the campus were horrific. The cries of my fellow female students are still ringing in my ears.

Let me recount how things unfolded Sunday. We had planned a peaceful protest against the discriminatory Citizenship Act and students had no intention to damage public property or pelt policemen with stones. After all, it is the right as well as the duty of the youth to question things that go against the fabric of our country. This is my firm belief that the CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) is totally against the fabric of whatever India has stood for so far.

On Sunday, the students started gathering around 5 pm and raised slogans against the Act. We were told that police bandobast was heavy and they were keeping an eye of local involvement in the protest march lest things go out of hands.

You must realise that the location of JMU campus is such that it is located in the middle of densely populated residential colonies, some of them considered affluent while some less privileged.

Out of nowhere we heard some commotion. Policemen were charging towards the students threateningly with batons. The students were not prepared for any confrontation and were initially shocked, then fled for safety. I was at the Print Point, near the university library and when I saw students running towards the library, I also joined them. Before my friends and I could make sense of anything, the guards on duty alerted us that the library wasn’t safe anymore and a large police force was moving in.

We ran for our lives and found shelter in the PhD students’ library. However, the police started lobbing tear gas shells inside the library to smoke us out. At around 6.30, the suffocation became unbearable and many students, especially girls, fainted. Meanwhile, we received messages that policemen had misbehaved with girl students, female journalists, just about anyone they could target in the melee.

A student faints due to suffocation

They searched every nook and corner of university buildings, including washrooms. We decided to come out of the library and had to lift several fellow students who had fainted.

Once we gathered our sense, we realised that several of our friends were missing. We went about searching for those who could not be traced via mobiles. We kept on receiving videos from girls who said they were scared for their lives. I have been told that three girl students are still missing while some students are critical.

We had to leave our hostel suddenly and find accommodation anywhere we could manage. I managed to reach a friend’s place at around 10.30 PM and was still worried for a lot of my friends. Many of us had to leave our laptops and other valuables behind. Many students ran out without a penny in their pocket.

Classes have been suspended till January 5 and the semester has been pushed forward. I am from Kanpur and this is my first year in Mass Communication at the university. Without any hostel facility, the situation is pretty bad for many of us. The government thinks students target them but we question anyone who is in power, because they are answerable.

The government needs to understand that the spirit of questioning cannot be crushed so easily. It is part of the Indian society’s fabric to question things and our Constitution also allows us to ask difficult questions, albeit respectfully. And I feel the University authorities should have been better prepared. Universities like Jamia, Jawaharlal Nehru University, and Aligarh Muslim University have been effectively playing the role of the Opposition by posing difficult questions.

We are asking questions and we must be answered in words and not by police batons and teargas shells. Does this current government have no heart that they treat their own youth, defenceless students, in this manner?

Students Across Country Rise In Support Of Jamia Protests

Students belonging to various educational institutions across the country on Monday stood up in solidarity with Jamia Millia University and condemned police action against university students protesting the Citizen Amendment Act.

Major opposition parties also slammed the NDA government on the contentious law and held protests in several states.

The students of Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) in Hyderabad staged a protest in the campus premises here against Delhi police action against the students of Jamia Millia Islamia, who were demonstrating over the citizenship law.

The students’ union of MANUU also wrote to the Controller of Examination to inform that the students were boycotting the exams on Monday as part of the protest.

Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) students in Mumbai also boycotted their classes and held a rally here against the ‘attack’ by Delhi Police.

In Bengaluru, students of Indian Institute of Science, organised a protest regarding police action against students of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) and Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).

Students put up posters against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 and the action taken against the protesters at the university campuses.

Clashes ensued between police and protestors at both JMI in New Delhi and AMU in Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh after the protests organised by students against the citizenship law turned violent on Sunday.

Kuldeep Sengar Convicted In Unnao Rape Case

Expelled BJP legislator Kuldeep Singh Sengar was on Monday found guilty by a Delhi court for raping a minor girl in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao district two years ago.

Delhi’s Tis Hazari District Judge Dharmesh Sharma observed in the order that, “the CBI was able to prove the guilt of Kuldeep Singh Sengar beyond a reasonable doubt.”

The co-accused Shashi Singh, who allegedly took the minor to Sengar, has been afforded the benefit of doubt and let out by the court.

Sengar, a four-time BJP MLA from Uttar Pradesh’s Bangarmau, had raped the girl at his residence in Unnao in June 2017, where she had gone seeking a job. He was arrested last year and is currently lodged in Tihar jail.

The court convicted him under Section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 5 (c) and 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, which pertains to penetrative sexual assault committed against a child by a public servant. Quantum of the sentence to Sengar will be pronounced tomorrow.

“The victims of sexual violence should come to the court and it will hear the case howsoever mighty the person is. Minimum sentence to Sengar would be ten years or life imprisonment,” advocate Dharmendra Kumar Mishra told ANI.

The court also showed displeasure with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for the delay in filing the charge sheet. The charge sheet filed by the CBI on October 3 had revealed that the girl was allegedly kidnapped and raped for nine days at different places by three persons when she was a minor in 2017.

A day-to-day hearing was conducted into the case after it was transferred from Uttar Pradesh to the national capital on the directions of the Supreme Court, earlier this year after the rape survivor’s car met with an accident in which two of her aunts were killed.

The rape survivor and her lawyer had also sustained grievous injuries in the accident. The family had alleged foul play.

The girl was airlifted to Delhi’s All Indian Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) following the car crash. A special court was held there to record her statement.

Another counsel representing the rape survivor, Poonam Kaushik, told ANI that the court has issued a notice in the accident case and the matter will be heard in January.

Congress Organises Save Democracy Protest

Sonia Attacks Modi-Shah Over Citizenship Protests

Congress chief Sonia Gandhi launched a scathing attack on the Narendra Modi government over the Centre’s action against protests over the new citizenship law, saying that the use of force against protesting students will prove to be the beginning of the fall of the central government.

In a statement, Congress president Sonia Gandhi said: “The Modi government itself has become the mother of violence and partition. It has pushed the country into a dark pit of hatred and burnt the future of the youth in furnace,” the statement read.

In the statement, Sonia asks how the country will run if the rulers themselves will commit violence, perpetrate an attack on the Constitutional values and beat up the youth.

The Congress president alleged that the Centre intends to spread “instability in the country, cause violence in the country, take away the rights of the youth and create an atmosphere of religious hysteria” for its political gains.

“Its perpetrators are none other than Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah themselves,” she said.

Gandhi said that police action against protesting students will prove the beginning of fall of the “arrogant” Modi government.

“Modi ji should know that when youth, student power awakens, a new change takes place in the country. This repression cycle launched on the youth and students by arrogant BJP and the lathis of the police will prove to be the beginning of the end of the Modi government,” she said.

At India Gate, Sonia’s daughter and Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday staged a symbolic protest against use of force by police on students of Jamia Millia Islamia University on Sunday.

Ram Temple At Ayodhya In Four Months: Amit Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday said that a temple will be built in Uttar Pradesh’s Ayodhya within four months.

“For a hundred years, people across the world have demanded a temple at the site where Lord Ram was born. The Supreme Court’s decision has now come and in four months a sky-high temple will be built in Ayodhya,” Shah said.

Last month, the apex court had unanimously handed over the entire disputed land, where Babri Masjid once stood, to a trust formed by the government and tasked it to helm the construction of a Ram temple at the site.

It also gave an alternative five acres land for the construction of a mosque.

The Home Minister was addressing a rally in Jharkhand’s Pakur district during the ongoing Assembly elections in the state.

Voting for the fourth phase of the Jharkhand Assembly elections began earlier today. The fifth and the last phase of voting will take place on December 20 and the counting of votes will be held on December 23.
