Modi In Ladakh: ‘Era Of Development, Not Expansionism’

Taking an apparent dig at China, while addressing the soldiers in Nimmoo, Leh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said the age of expansionism is over and added that the new age of development is here.

“From Leh, Ladakh to Siachen and Kargil…and Galwan’s icy waters…every mountain, every peak is witness to the valour of Indian soldiers. Age of expansionism is over, this is the age of development. History is witness that expansionist forces have either lost or were forced to turn back,” said PM Modi.

The Prime Minister also said that the people of Ladakh have rejected every attempt to create separatism in the region.

“Ladakh is the head of the country. This is the symbol of pride for the 130 crore citizens of India. This land belongs to the people who are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for the country… Every attempt to create separatism in the region was rejected by the nationalist people of Ladakh,” Modi said.

PM Modi said the bravery of 14 Corps will be talked about everywhere. “Tales of your bravery and valour are echoing in every house in the country.”

“Bharat Mata’s enemies have seen your fire and fury,” he added.

“The bravery that you and your compatriots showed, a message has gone to the world about India’s strength. Your courage is higher than the heights where you are posted today. I once again pay my tributes to the brave soldiers martyred in Galwan Valley,” said PM Modi.

The Prime Minister paid tributes to the valour of the Indian Armed Forces, stating that their courage and devotion to Mother India is unparalleled. He said Indians can go about their lives peacefully because they know that the armed forces are standing firm, protecting the nation in the borders.

Prime Minister remembered the soldiers who lost their lives in the Galwan Valley clash. He said those who sacrificed their lives belong to all parts of India and “epitomised our land’s ethos of bravery.”

He further said, “We are the same people who pray to the flute playing Lord Krishna but we are also the same people who idealise and follow the same Lord Krishna who carries the Sudarshana Chakra.”

The Prime Minister added that India has increased expenditure on development of infrastructure in the border area by three times.

Highlighting women empowerment in the battlefield, PM Modi said, “I am looking at women soldiers in front of me. In the battlefield at the border, this view is inspiring….Today I speak of your glory.”

“Those who are weak can never initiate peace, bravery is a pre-requisite for peace. Whether World Wars or peace, whenever the need arises, the world has seen the victory of our braves and their efforts towards peace. We have worked for the betterment of humanity,” he added.

The soldiers were seen maintaining social distancing while the Prime Minister addressed them.

The Prime Minister on Friday made a surprise visit to Ladakh and was briefed by senior officers at Nimmoo amid ongoing tension with China. The Prime Minister was accompanied by Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat and Army Chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane.

Scindia Stamp: MP Cabinet Inducts 28 More Ministers

Twenty-eight Ministers, who joined the Shivraj Singh Chouhan government in Madhya Pradesh, were administered the oath of office and secrecy by Governor Anandiben Patel at Raj Bhawan in Bhopal on Thursday.

Notably, this is the second cabinet expansion since Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan returned to the helm of state affairs on March 23. He had earlier only inducted five ministers in the cabinet in April.

The leaders who became a part of the cabinet are, Gopal Bhargava, Vijay Shah, Jagdish Devdha, Bisahulal Singh, Yashodhara Raje Scindia, Bhupendra Singh, Adal Singh Kansana, Brijendra Pratap Singh, Vishwas Sarang, Imarti Devi, Dr Prabhuram Chaudhary, Mahendra Singh Sisodia, Pradhumn Singh Tomar, Prem Singh Patel, Om Prakash Sakhlecha, Usha Thakur, Arvind Bhadoriya, Dr Mohan Yadav, Hardeep Singh Dang, Rajvardhan Singh, Prem Singh Dattigaon, Bharat Singh Kushwaha, Inder Singh Parmar, Ram Khelwan Patel, Ramkishore Kanware, Brijendra Singh Yadav, Girraj Dandotiya, Suresh Dhakad and OPS Bhadoriya.

Soon after the expansion, BJP leader Jyotiraditya Scindia launched an attack on Congress leaders Digvijaya Singh and Kamal Nath accusing them of going back on promises to people of Madhya Pradesh.

“Tiger abhi zinda hai (Tiger is still alive),” Scindia said in an apparent indication to his win in the induction of 28 ministers, seen as his loyalists.

“I don’t need any certificate from Kamal Nath nor Digvijaya Singh. The facts are before the people how they looted the state in 15 months. They have taken everything for themselves. They (people) have also seen their history of going back on promises. But I would only like to tell them ‘tiger abhi zinda hai (tiger is alive),” Scindia told reporters here.

Earlier today, Scindia had said that the cabinet is not a leader’s team but that of people and will serve them.

“This (the Cabinet) is not any leader’s team, but the team of the public. They are not the government’s ministers but public servants. We will strive for serving the people and will provide services to the last person in the society. In 100 days of its rule the Shivraj Singh government has battled corona, helped the farmers in every possible way. We will continue doing this in the next four years,” Scindia said.

CBI Books GVK Reddy, Others In Mumbai Airport Scam

Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered an FIR against Dr GVK Reddy, Chairman of GVK Group, Mumbai International Airport, officials of Airport Authority of India and others, for alleged irregularities worth more than Rs 800 crores in the development of Mumbai Airport.

According to the FIR, the accused were involved in siphoning off the funds in the name of development of the Mumbai airport from 2012 to 2018.

“From 2012 onwards, the promoters of GVK Group with criminal intention to cause loss to AAI, used the surplus funds of MIAL to the tune of Rs 395 crore to finance their other group companies. They fraudulently created forged Board Meeting Resolution of MIAL authorising to keep the reserve surplus funds of MIAL as FDRs with PSU banks at Hyderabad MIAL is Mumbai based company but they chose to deposits the funds in the form of FDRs with Hyderabad based branch of Bank of India,” CBI FIR read.

Eventually, the CBI has further claimed to have found that the GVK group was involved in siphoning the funds by showing the execution of bogus work contracts.

“Around 200 acres of undeveloped and parcel in Mumbai, around the Airport, was given by AAI for development and generating revenue. The MAL entered into fake/bogus work contracts during 2017-2018 with many private limited companies which were used for transferring the funds to them but these contracts have never been executed on ground and the transactions were only on papers,” the CBI FIR read.

“Using this modus operandi, Rs 310 Crore have been fraudulently siphoned off which resulted in the wrongful loss to AAI and corresponding wrongful gain to themselves. These nine companies have also availed fake Input Tax Credit (ITC) and caused further revenue loss to the Government Exchequer based fake invoices issued,” it added. (ANI)

‘Reopening Our Restaurant Needed Courage & Caution’

Saurabh Jalan (36), a restaurateur in Kolkata, used the lockdown period to set new safety and hygiene standards in place. When Unlock 1.0 came, Jalan was ready to reboot

I own three restaurants in Kolkata and have been in this business for last five years. The business was running smoothly till Coronavirus pandemic struck. People in Kolkata love adda (loosely, a hangout buzzing with debates and discussion), and long social meetings are an inherent part of the city’s culture. Coronavirus and the ensuing lockdown brought an abrupt end to this.

The hospitality sector has been the worst hit and we didn’t know what the future would hold for all of us. The first lockdown had been announced so suddenly that many of our employees were not able to go back to their home towns in other states, especially our housekeeping staff and chefs etc. on duty that night. The first thing we did was to tell them not to panic and keep their morale high. We provided them shelter in the restaurant itself and took care of their needs to make them feel they were not alone in this crisis.

Realising that the pandemic will change the way we would socialise in future, we trained our staff to set new hygiene and sanitation standards in place.

I then sat with my partners to draw a plan to provide food to the needy. It had twin purpose: we served our society and also kept our employees engaged in work. Every day, we sent out around 1,000-1,500 food packets. We thus we got better equipped against Covid-19. When the Unlock 1.0 was announced, we were cautious but ready to be back in business.

Our patrons’ safety was paramount. So we kept only one of the three restaurants fully functional while other two were turned into take-away or home delivery setups. The dining in facility was kept limited to our veg multi-cuisine restaurant called Fly Kouzina (Kolkata’s first airline-themed restaurant in Salt Lake area).

I would be lying if I said we are not scared. But we have a solid team which brainstorms every morning about how to make things safer, more hygienic and yet enjoyable for both customers and employees.

There are paper envelopes for guests to keep their masks while they are eating. We share the menu via WhatsApp so there is minimum need to touch anything except the food we eat. If customers want to order food from their cars parked outside, we make sure we provide them with as good a service as we do inside the restaurant.

The surfaces are regularly sanitized. Excessive care is taken in keeping the washrooms sanitized after every single use. We also take out the time to address each and every query the guests might have related to our preparation against Covid-19.

Based on our experience on Fly Kouzina, we hope to open our other two restaurants pretty soon. Both the public as well as restaurant owners are showing courage with caution. Each day brings with itself new challenges and newer solutions to keep the fight against Covid-19 going.

We have only about 30-40 people coming in to our restaurant every day but we hope things will begin to pick up slowly. Flying is still very risky but people can get a little feel of travel at our airline-themed restaurant.

India, China Agree On Phased De-escalation At Border

India and China have emphasised the need for an expeditious, phased and stepwise de-escalation of tension along the Line of Actual Control “as a priority” during the third commander level talks between the People’s Liberation Army and Indian Army held at Chushul, Ladakh, on June 30, sources privy to the matter told ANI on Wednesday.

India and China have been engaged in discussions through established military and diplomatic channels to address the situation along the LAC in India-China border areas.

This was third senior military commander level engagement in Chushul held to discuss issues related to disengagement at the faceoff sites along the LAC and de-escalation from the border areas.

“Both sides have emphasised the need for an expeditious, phased and stepwise de-escalation as a priority,” sources said.

“This is in keeping with the agreement between the External Affairs Minister and his Chinese counterpart during their conversation on 17th June that the overall situation would be handled in a responsible manner, and that both sides would implement the disengagement understanding of 6th June sincerely,” they added.

The meeting yesterday was long and held in a businesslike manner keeping in view the Covid-19 protocols. The discussions reflected the commitment of both sides to reduce the tensions along the LAC. The process of disengagement along the LAC is complex and in such a context, speculative and unsubstantiated reports need to be avoided.

Sources also said that more meetings are expected to be held both at the military and at the diplomatic level, in the future, to arrive at a mutually agreeable solutions and to ensure peace and tranquility along the LAC as per bilateral agreements and protocols.

The second round of talks took place in Moldo on the Chinese side of the LAC whereby the two sides reached a mutual consensus to disengage in the Eastern Ladakh sector.

India and China have been involved in talks to ease the ongoing border tensions since last month. Twenty Indian soldiers lost their lives in a violent face-off in Galwan valley on June 15-16 after an attempt by the Chinese troops to unilaterally change the status quo during the de-escalation. (ANI)
