Farmers Don’t Know What They Want: MP Hema Malini

Farmers agitating at the borders of Delhi don’t know what they want, said veteran actor and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Mathura, Hema Malini, and added that they are only protesting because someone had asked them to do so.

“It is good that the Supreme Court has stayed the laws. This will hopefully calm the situation. Farmers are not willing to come to a consensus even after so many talks. They do not even know what they want and what is the problem with the farm laws. This means that they are doing this because someone asked them to do it,” Hema Malini said.

She also said that it was ‘not nice’ to see towers being vandalised in Punjab.

“Punjab has suffered a lot of losses. It was not nice to see them (farmers) vandalise towers. The government has called them for talks repeatedly but they don’t even have an agenda,” she added.

Speaking about the COVID-19 situation, she reminded people that the pandemic is not yet over and masks should be used and safety protocols followed.

“Corona is not yet over. Some people from our party passed away due to the disease. The general public should continue to be more cautious. If we roam around freely (without precautions) it will increase again. Especially with this new bird flu, everyone should take care of themselves and their family,” she said.

The actor-turned-politician further said that she would definitely be vaccinated when her turn comes.

“Good that the vaccine is here now. I will definitely get the vaccine when my turn comes. The opposition has also said some things. Whatever the government says they have to say just the opposite,” she said. (ANI)

Owaisi No Godfather, Don’t Vote On Religious Line: Bengal Imam

By Syeda Shabana Parveen

All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi is not a “Godfather” and people should not cast votes based on religion, the head of West Bengal Imam Association, Mohammad Yahya said on Tuesday.

“In Bengal, elections are not fought on the basis of religion. Owaisi’s emergence will not make any difference in Bengal because people here believe in development. He is not a Godfather that people would follow what he says,” Yahya said.

Yahya targeted Owaisi for allegedly playing up the religious card ahead of the upcoming assembly election in the state.

Speaking to ANI, Yahya further alleged that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the AIMIM were indulging in religious polarisation.

“BJP is trying to divide Bengal, the same as AIMIM. The election is for everyone – not just for selective areas like Hindu dominated areas or Muslim dominated areas. Why does AIMIM want to contest election particularly in minority-dominated areas? Please do not ask votes on the basis of religious practice,” Yahya said.

Hyderabad-based Owaisi, whose party put up a good show during 2020 Bihar Assembly polls last year, bagging five seats, had announced that AIMIM will contest Assembly polls in West Bengal (ANI)

SC Forms Panel On Farm Laws, Farmers Say ‘Not Accepted’

After the Supreme Court decision to stay the three farm laws and set up a committee to resolve the ongoing standoff, the farmer leaders made it clear that they will not accept the decision of the court to form a committee.

Farmer leaders addressed a press conference today to clear their stand about the Supreme Court’s decision.

One of the farmer leaders, Dr Darshan Pal said, “Last night, we gave a press note in which we said that any SC-appointed committee is not going to be acceptable to us.”

Farmer leader Balbir Singh Rajoal said, ‘We think the government is bringing this committee through Supreme Court. We do not accept this committee as all the members in this committee have been pro-government, these members have been justifying the laws.”

“This committee is to divert the attention from the main issue. All the four members have been continuously supporting the farm laws through their articles,” he added.

He further said, “Even if the members of committee change, we still will not take part in discussions with committee.”

Farmer leader Ravinder Patiyala said, “January 26 is not the last day of agitation, we will intensify the protest and spread it across the country. Supreme Court did not make laws as it is a tussle between government and people and we want these laws repealed nothing short of that.”

“It is a good thing that implementation of laws has been put on hold and it is a welcome decision but this was our right and nothing less than the repeal of farm laws is expected,” he added.

He further said: “January 26 programme is going to be completely peaceful. Some people are spreading rumours that we are going to Red Fort or Parliament. How the march will be organised will be decided after January 15. We will never tolerate violence.”

One of the farmer leaders said that Lohri festival will be celebrated by burning copies of farm bills.

“We will burn the copy of three farm laws in the bonfire on the day of the Lohri. It will be done across the country and internationally too,” farmer leader Baldev Singh Sirsa of Samyukt Morcha said.

On January 13, the country will celebrate Lohri festival. Lohri is a famous winter festival of the farmers in Northern India, and it is also known as the harvest (agriculture) festival. Farmers hold bonfire in the evening and pray for good crops. (ANI)

Analysis: Taiwan Becomes Meat In US-China Sandwich

Taiwan should be ready for a rough ride as its importance in China-US bilateral ties grows. Outgoing President Donald Trump upped the stakes yet again when his administration lifted restrictions on US officials visiting the democratically ruled East Asian island.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced on 9 January that the USA would attempt to appease Beijing no longer through internal restrictions on official ties with Taipei. “Today I am announcing that I am lifting all of these self-imposed restrictions. Executive branch agencies should consider all ‘contact guidelines’ regarding relations with Taiwan previously issued by the Department of State under authorities delegated to the Secretary of State to be null and void.”

Pompeo added in his statement: “The United States government maintains relationships with unofficial partners around the world, and Taiwan is no exception. Our two democracies share common values of individual freedom, the rule of law and a respect for human dignity. Today’s statement recognizes that the US-Taiwan relationship need not, and should not, be shackled by self-imposed restrictions of our permanent bureaucracy.”

Some commentators might see this as a cynical final fling by Trump and Pompeo, designed to cause a thorn in the Sino-US relationship for incoming president Joe Biden. Others might see it as an astute political move by Pompeo to appeal to American voters after he departs office this month.

However, it is somewhat consistent with Trump’s approach to Taiwan and China. Remember his hosting a congratulatory phone call from President Tsai Ing-wen in December 2016? That first ever direct contact between American and Taiwanese leaders since 1979 threw Beijing into a frenzied state, just as this latest State Department action has done.

Chinese media immediately raised a cacophony of criticism. Xinhua said the move was “seeking to maliciously inflict a long-lasting scar on China-US ties.” The broadcaster CGTN called it “a cowardly act of sabotage” for the incoming US administration.

As another example, the tabloid Global Times described it as “breaking the bottom line of China-US ties,” and the “Trump administration’s last-ditch effort on Taiwan is like hanging a sword over bilateral ties with China which will put Taiwan in imminent danger”.

The same op-ed continued that, “given the few days left for the Trump administration, Beijing should take countermeasures mainly with diplomatic means supplemented by military solutions as a tit-for-tat response to the very antagonistic move”. Suggested modes are exercises by the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and flights around Taiwan or over the Taiwan Strait.

US Ambassador to the United Nations Kelly Craft is scheduled to visit Taiwan this week. This follows earlier visits by the US Health Secretary Alex Azar, and Keith Krach, the State Department’s undersecretary of state for economic growth, energy and environment.

Taiwan eagerly welcomed the lifting of America’s self-imposed restrictions. Taiwanese Foreign Minister Joseph Wu tweeted: “I’m grateful to @SecPompeo & @StateDept for lifting restrictions unnecessarily limiting our engagements these past years. I’m also thankful for strong bipartisan support in Congress for the #Taiwan Assurance Act, which advocates a review of prior guidelines. The closer partnership between #Taiwan & the #US is firmly based on our shared values, common interests & unshakeable belief in freedom & democracy. We’ll continue working in the months & years ahead to ensure Taiwan is & continues to be a force for good in the world.”

Randall Schriver, Chairman of the Project 2049 Institute in the USA, which has a keen interest in Taiwan-US ties, was pleased with this policy move. He issued a statement saying: “As President-elect Biden assumes office on January 20, his administration will inherit a posture in US-Taiwan relations removed of unhelpful limitations and difficult political decisions. His administration will be empowered to chart a new course in US policy with tremendous possibilities. For the first time in 40 years, the United States is free to enact policy wholly in our best interest.”

Schriver, a former Assistant Secretary of Defense for Indo-Pacific Security Affairs under Trump’s administration, concluded, “We encourage the incoming Biden administration to build upon this important moment to support a more peaceful and prosperous Indo-Pacific.”

There is therefore no escaping the fact that Taiwan will be critical in the China-USA relationship. The status of Taiwan is the most important strategic consideration for Chairman Xi Jinping, and he would dearly love to absorb – peacefully or forcibly – the democratic nation into communist-controlled China. It was something Mao Zedong failed to achieve, as Chiang Kai-shek retreated to the final bastion of Taiwan in December 1949 and slipped the communist noose.

Beijing and Washington already have enormous contentions, including strategic and military competition, and an unresolved trade war. Biden will undoubtedly tread more cautiously than Trump did, and many fear that the Democratic president will take the USA back into the China-appeasing years of Barack Obama.

Biden was vice president for eight years under Obama, a period in which he did nothing to counter Chinese influence. Instead, the watchword at that time was to “de-escalate” tensions and to nobble the US military. At that time, it appeared Taiwan was an unwanted fly in the ointment to the Obama administration in terms of Sino-US ties. From 2009-17, Washington DC did nothing to prevent China from intimidating its neighbors, or from building military bases in international waters of the South China Sea.

Will Biden be courageous and determined enough to stand up to Chinese pressure and intimidation? Or will he allow nearly 24 million Taiwanese to be enslaved by communism? Those are questions that remain to be answered.

Japan is certainly one country watching with fearful eyes. Were the USA to abandon Taiwan or to reduce its commitment to the island, Tokyo would be in an extremely tough spot. Were China to seize Taiwan, Japan would be bounded by an aggressive and militaristic China to both the south and west. Not only would the First Island Chain be irrevocably snapped, but Japan’s own sea lines of communication – which it relies upon for incoming raw materials and oil, and for exporting its manufactured products – would be almost totally severed.

Japanese Defense Minister Yasuhide Nakayama said recently that Taiwan’s security was a “red line” for both his country and the USA. In a media interview, he urged Biden to “stay strong”. However, he also warned, “So far, I haven’t yet seen a clear policy or an announcement on Taiwan from Joe Biden. I would like to hear it quickly; then we can also prepare our response on Taiwan in accordance.”

As well as undeniably feeding Xi’s and the Chinese people’s hubris, the fall of Taiwan would give the PLA a naval and aerial springboard deep into the Pacific Ocean. Simultaneously, Japan’s defenses in its southern archipelago would be circumvented, and pressure on the Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands would prove intolerable. More than that, the estimation of the USA in the eyes of all Asian nations would plummet to depths even lower than they are today.

However, why should it be just the USA that must act to defend and support Taiwan? What about Asia-Pacific countries like Australia, India, Indonesia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Japan, Singapore, South Korea and Vietnam? Even Europe has a role to play, with countries like France and the United Kingdom vocal about upholding the rule of international law in places like the South China Sea.

Too few are willing to stand up, cowed and intimidated by the threats that Beijing issues. Yet Taiwan needs international buttressing – it cannot withstand the might of China if it is left alone.

The violent events of 6 January in the Capitol Building demonstrated that the USA is struck down with cancerous internal malaise. Indeed, Beijing would have been delighted as the wild mob invaded the corridors of power, handing it the perfect propaganda opportunity to promote the benefits of stable Chinese socialism versus the uncertainty of democracy.

Under such conditions, the USA is currently distracted from international obligations and concerns, and Taiwan will surely not figure highly in Biden’s thinking. Xi also knows that democracies around the world are similarly distracted by COVID-19, and that alliances are in tatters after four years of Trump. Sensing this, the risk grows that China will do something aggressive, such as orchestrating a confrontation or seizing one of Taiwan’s offshore islands.

Amidst all this, the State Council has just issued a new white paper entitled China’s International Development Cooperation in the New Era. It concluded, “Confronted by acute global challenges, no country can achieve lasting stability and development without solidarity, cooperation and a partnership featuring peaceful and mutually beneficial cooperation, equality, openness, inclusiveness and shared growth.”

The document finished by saying, “China has entered a new development phase and is about to embark on a quest to fully build itself into a modern socialist country. It always considers its own growth in the context of the common development of all humanity. It closely relates its future to the fortunes of other countries, and binds the interests of the Chinese people to the common interests of all peoples. China will stay true to its original principles regarding international development cooperation. As a builder of world peace, a contributor to global prosperity and a defender of international order, it will continue to cooperate on international development and contribute even more to improving the common wellbeing of humanity and building a global community of shared future.”

These words do not provide any solace whatsoever, for they are mere words laced with Chinese slogans repeated ad nauseam. The fact is that China is predatory, that it puts the communist party’s interests above those of the Chinese people or of anyone else, and that it threatens the very existence of Taiwan. It does not respect others nor international law.

Yielding to China’s inevitable strength is not pragmatism, for Beijing will continue to demand more and more from supplicants. This was all harshly demonstrated in 2020, when India discovered that pandering to China always ends in tears. The PLA scrabbled to occupy more territory along the disputed border, and Beijing has still not retreated. Although the current standoff along the border is costing India manpower, money and intense discomfort that it can ill afford during the COVID-19 pandemic, it is the only way that China can be treated. If China is allowed to carry on unmolested, it will take every advantage.

One hopes that Biden learns this painful lesson quickly, although it was sadly one he was blindly insensible to in his eight years as US vice president from 2009-17. (ANI)

Covid-19 Vaccines Are A Must For All

‘Ignore Fake News, Covid-19 Vaccines Are A Must For All’

Mufti Mohammad Danish Qadri, 30, general secretary of Markazi Jammiyat-ehle Sunnat, says saving a life is of foremost importance and people must take part in vaccination wholeheartedly

Much like in other parts of the world, the business of fake news thrives in India too. The more important the matter is, the more fake news and misinformation it generates. Gullible men and women fall for what I call propaganda by Whatsapp University scholars. One such half-truth was that the recently launched vaccines for coronavirus contain gelatin (a product derived from pigs and considered haram or forbidden in Islam).

First, no such news has been confirmed; this is all fear-mongering. Second, even if the vaccines contained gelatin, it would be seen as a medicine, not food, which is meant to save lives. In Islam, saving lives is considered the highest obligation. Thus most Islamic scholars see no issue in this regard. In fact, in Islam if on an occasion like the current pandemic, offering namaz publicly is seen as unsafe, one can even forego namaz. Public health and safety come foremost. One must stay away from meddling faith into medicine.

Take for example, the polio vaccination programme started in the last decade. UNICEF officials approached muftis and other religious leaders to dispel the misinformation surrounding the programme. I am proud to say I was at the forefront of the immunisation programme. Without a healthy society, how will faith survive?

ALSO READ: ‘Proud To Be Part Of Vaccination Programme’

Nowadays, many people think science and religion (especially Islam) are in conflict with each other, but in the middle-ages it was Islam which made great progress towards surgery, anaesthesia and developing antiseptics. Even alcohol which is forbidden in Islam is allowed when used as a medicine.

Qadri says politics and matters of faith must not be in conflict with medicine

People with shallow knowledge of the Quran and the Hadees can put people’s lives in danger. Islam takes law, health and emotional as well as financial development into account to create a stable society. Few people know that when the first plague to afflict the Islamic world, called the plague of Amwas (Amwas ta’un), broke out near Palestine, a strict lockdown kind of restriction was imposed to contain the spread. That was nearly 1,450 years ago.

So when people question about restrictions today, we tell them that communities, including Islamic, have respected scientific research and rules right from the beginning. The pandemic has been difficult for all of us, and the vaccination programme will only help people regain freedom.

ALSO READ: A Vaccine Of Hope

Hygiene is also of tremendous importance in Islam which is why there is the concept of wuzu (ablutions) five times a day. Such traditions were formed for the health and wellbeing of society. So that when people offer namaz in public places, one infected person does not spread the contagion.

Some people say they distrust the vaccine because it is being brought by the BJP government. This is incorrect. Everyone needs vaccine and it must not be made a political issue. I am happy India has been able to develop its own vaccines. We should all volunteer to get ourselves vaccinated and not pose any inconvenience to healthcare workers. They have already been so overworked since last year to protect us.

For those who still look for religious sanction, I can assure them that in new or unforeseen circumstances (like coronavirus) Islam has the concept of qiyas (jurisprudence). And our jurisprudence says, vaccination is for the public good.

Covid Vaccine Consignments To Reach 13 Locations Today

The first consignment containing vials of Covishield vaccine were dispatched from the Serum Institute of India here in the early hours of Tuesday, ahead of the January 16 launch of the nationwide vaccination drive.

Amid tight security, three trucks carrying the very first consignment of the Oxford-AstraZeneca Covid vaccine left for Pune airport to be flown to 13 locations across the country today.

“The first flight will leave for Delhi from Pune airport,” Sandip Bhosale, SB Logistics, the logistics team which is handling air transport of Covishield vaccine from Pune International Airport told ANI.

A total of eight flights- two cargo flights and other regular commercial flights will carry the vaccines, he said.

“All vaccines will be dispatched by 10 am,” he added.

The locations include Delhi, Karnal, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Lucknow, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Bhubhaneshwar, Kolkata and Guwahati.

The first Cargo flight with the vaccines will drop off the consignment at Hyderabad, Vijayawada and Bhubhaneshwar while the second cargo flight will go to Kolkata and Guwahati.

“The first consignment of the vaccine has been dispatched from the facility of Serum Institute of India here. We have made elaborate security arrangements,” said Namrata Patil, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DCP), Pune.

Pune-based logistic firm Kool-ex Cold Chain tasked with ferrying the vaccine stocks via tech-enabled trucks laced with temperature control feature ranging from -25 degrees to +25 degrees Celsius.

Serum Institute of India (SII) has received a purchase order from the Government of India for 11 million doses of Covishield vaccine, which would be available at the price of Rs 200 per dose, SII officials had said on Monday

The first phase of the COVID-19 vaccination drive in the country is starting from January 16. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier said “We aim to vaccinate 30 crore people in the next few months.”

Around 3 crore healthcare workers and frontline workers will be vaccinated in the first phase of vaccination, he added. In the second phase, those above 50 years and those under 50 years with co-morbid conditions will be vaccinated, he further said. (ANI)

Japan Best, Pakistan & Nepal Worst Passports To Hold

Even as the world continues to cope with the COVID-19 pandemic, Japan tops the list of being the most powerful passport in the world for the year 2021, according to the latest report by the Henley Passport Index.

Pakistan (rank 107) and Nepal (rank 104) continue to be in the ‘worst passports to hold’ category as reported by CNN with Pakistan having a visa-free score of 32 countries and Nepal having a score of 38 destinations.

Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan continue to be the countries with the worst passport to hold with a passport score of 29, 28 and 26 respectively.

According to the report released on January 5, Japanese citizens can travel to as many as 191 countries visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 191 destinations around the world. Singapore is in second place (with a score of 190) and South Korea ties with Germany in third place (with a score of 189).

Countries like the United States, the United Kingdom, New Zealand and Switzerland are tied at the seventh position with regard to the most powerful passports in the world with a visa-free score of 185. Australia stands at the 8th position with a visa score of 184.

India ranks 85th in the most powerful passport report with a visa-free score of 58.

According to a statement by Henley and Partners, the ascendance of APAC countries in the Henley Passport Index rankings is a relatively new phenomenon adding, “Over the index’s 16-year history, the top spots were traditionally held by EU countries, the UK, or the US and experts suggest that the APAC region’s position of strength will continue as it includes some of the first countries to begin the process of recovering from the (COVID-19) pandemic.”

With the US and the UK still facing significant challenges related to the virus, and the passport strength of both countries continuing to “steadily erode”, the balance of power is shifting, the company’s report stated.

Dr. Christian H. Kaelin, Chairman of leading residence and citizenship advisory firm Henley & Partners and the inventor of the passport index concept, says that the latest ranking provides an opportunity to reflect on the extraordinary upheaval that characterised 2020.

“Just a year ago all indications were that the rates of global mobility would continue to rise, that travel freedom would increase, and holders of powerful passports would enjoy more access than ever before,” the chairman said as quoted by the statement.

“The global lockdown negated these glowing projections, and as restrictions begin to lift, the results from the latest index are a reminder of what passport power really means in a world upended by the pandemic,” Kaelin added. (ANI)
