‘I Had Zero Side-Effect After Second Covid Vaccine Shot’

Dr Amiya Kumar Verma, deputy medical superintendent at Max Hospital Patparganj, Delhi, got his 2nd shot of vaccine on Feb 13.  Having seen the battle against Covid from the frontline, he is relieved to see the vaccination moving in right direction

I got my first dose of Covishield vaccine on January 16, 2021, the day when the nationwide Covid-19 vaccine drive was started. I had volunteered to take the shot on the very first day itself as I wanted to remove the fears of some of the doubting Thomases in my team.

And it worked. Of the 100 health-workers slotted to be vaccinated on day one, 70 came forward; this was the best percentage score from Delhi centres. It was natural for them to have anxiety about the vaccine, but when they saw the seniors taking the jab, they felt encouraged.

I must also appreciate the government’s efforts and planning for the vaccination at the designated unit in our hospital (Max Patparganj). The drive was monitored by health officials who informed the beneficiaries of possible side-effects and managed it smoothly.

Of the 70 who were vaccinated that day, almost everyone experienced a mild fever and weakness for a few days. I too had similar experience but the effects tapered off in three to four days.

After the first vaccination shot, there was a survey carried by the government through a toll-free number for feedback about the procedure followed, hygiene maintained at the centre, and if the beneficiaries were attended to for the designated period post-vaccination.

The second shot after 28 days, that is on Feb 13. This time, there were no side-effects. Not even mild fever; I even went for my routine evening walk. As the experience was shared, it has raised hope and confidence among others about the vaccination programme.

I have been telling the heads of each department in our hospital to lead from the front so that the rest of the staff gains confidence. Of the 2,200 to be vaccinated, about 1,600 have got the jab. The ones left include those who adopt a wait and watch policy. They want the others to take the second dose and wait for their side effects.

In our battle against the pandemic, other than basic precautions, we simply do not have any other alternative except the two vaccines available. So why should I not take it!

Dr Verma considers vaccine a blessing amid pandemic

It is a blessing for the healthcare workers and their families as well as for those who have lost their loved ones during this pandemic. This pandemic made people so helpless that they couldn’t be at the side of their loved ones in the hospital or bid them a final goodbye. I have seen deaths where relatives prayed us to let them visit their patients one last time. And then, there were some people who did not come to see their family members for the fear of contagion. Such has been the stigma and the hopelessness that the pandemic caused.

It is disappointing to hear some people say, that if others have taken the vaccine, we don’t need it. The idea for taking the vaccine is that the antibodies are developed in our body; it doesn’t mean that we won’t get the infection. What it means is by chance even if we get it, we will not have a serious effect like it did in the past after having taken the shot.

I want to tell people that if I have taken the vaccine then I can face and fight coronavirus while the one who is not vaccinated is neither safe from contraction nor capable of battling the virus. So this mentality that let others take it and we will be safe is not the right one.

If the government puts a price on the vaccination, I am sure people will stand in queue to get it but because the government is doing it free of cost, people are taking it for granted. Also the social media spreads a lot of misinformation. People keep forwarding a message that can do more harm than good without reading or understanding it.

Priyanka Decries Arrest Of ‘Unarmed’ Activist Disha Ravi

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday came out in support of climate activist Disha Ravi who was arrested by Delhi police over the “toolkit” controversy related to farmers’ protest on social media and said that the unarmed girl has struck fear among those who are armed with guns.

“People with guns are afraid of an unarmed girl. Rays of courage and hope are being spread through an unarmed girl #ReleaseDishaRavi #DishaRavi #IndiaBeingSilenced,” tweeted the Congress leader.
Several political leaders slammed Delhi Police for arresting 21-year-old climate activist Disha Ravi from Bengaluru and termed her arrest as “unwarranted harassment, unfortunate and shocking”.

She was arrested for allegedly editing and disseminating the “toolkit” on social media.

Another Congress leader P Chidambaram said, “The Indian state must be standing on very shaky foundations if Disha Ravi, a 22-year-old student of Mount Carmel College and a climate activist, has become a threat to the nation.”

“A ‘tool kit’ to support the farmers’ protest is more dangerous than the intrusion by Chinese troops into Indian territory! India is becoming the theatre of the absurd and it is sad that the Delhi Police has become a tool of the oppressors,” he added.

A Delhi court on Sunday remanded Disha to five days of police custody following her arrest in connection with allegedly spreading a “toolkit” related to the farmers’ protest. Duty Metropolitan Magistrate Dev Saroha of Patiala House Courts Complex allowed Delhi Police to quiz Ravi for five days. She was arrested on Saturday.

According to the Delhi Police officials, Disha is a key conspirator in the “toolkit” case as she had admitted during the initial interrogation to editing, adding some things in the “toolkit” and spreading it further.

Last week, the Delhi Police sent a communication to Google seeking registration details and activity log of the account through which a “toolkit” related to the farmers’ protest was created and uploaded on the social media platform.

Two e-mail IDs, one Instagram account, and one Uniform Resource Locator (URL) were mentioned in the toolkit and police have asked for details from the respective platforms.

The police had registered an FIR against unidentified persons in connection with the creators of the “toolkit’. (ANI)

Toolkit Probe: Meet Held On R-Day Eve For ‘Twitter Storm’

MO Dhaliwal, the founder of pro-Khalistani Poetic Justice Foundation contacted activist Nikita Jacob through his colleague Puneet, a Canadian citizen, to create a storm on Twitter ahead of Republic Day, police sources revealed on the ‘Toolkit’ document case related to the ongoing farmers’ protest.

According to the sources, an investigation into the toolkit conspiracy has revealed the deeper conspiracy associated with the Google document. There was a zoom meeting before Republic Day which was attended by MO Dhaliwal, Nikita and Disha, among others. The motive of the meeting was to create a Twitter storm ahead of Republic Day. They also spoke about the death of a farmer.

According to the sources, four days ago Special Cell team went to Nikita Jacob’s house and examined her electronic gadgets. Delhi police told her that they would again question her but she is currently not available.
A day after Disha Ravi was arrested and sent to five days of police custody the Delhi Police have now issued a non-bailable warrant against activists Nikita Jacob and Shantanu.

Disha Ravi, a 21-year-old climate activist was arrested from Bengaluru in connection with the formulation and dissemination of Toolkit document, in the ongoing farmers’ protest. She was one of the editors of ‘Toolkit’ document.

“Disha Ravi is an editor of the Toolkit Google Document and a key conspirator in document’s formulation and dissemination. She started a WhatsApp group and collaborated to make the Toolkit doc. She worked closely with them to draft the Doc,” tweeted Delhi Police.

According to CyPAD Delhi Police, the editors of the toolkit collaborated with the pro-Khalistani Poetic Justice Foundation to spread disaffection against the Indian State. Ravi was the one who shared the Toolkit Doc with Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg.

Ravi later asked Thunberg to remove the main document after its incriminating details accidentally got into the public domain, said Delhi Police.

On Sunday, Ravi was presented before a Delhi Court that remanded her five days of police custody. Disha Ravi broke down inside the courtroom and told the judge that she has edited only two lines and she wanted to support the farmers’ protest.

Earlier, the Delhi Police sent a communication to Google seeking registration details and activity log of the account through which a “toolkit” related to the farmers’ protest was created and uploaded on the social media platform.

Two e-mail IDs, one Instagram account, and one Uniform Resource Locator (URL) were mentioned in the toolkit and police have asked for details from the respective platforms.

Panic In TMC Shows Change Will Happen In Bengal: BJP

By Joymala Bagchi

BJP West Bengal President Dilip Ghosh on Sunday said that Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Tapas Roy’s speech at Bankura asking Congress and Left parties to join Trinamool Congress is proof that his party has realised that they cannot win alone and ‘parivartan’ is bound to happen.

The statement came two days after the Roy had indicated that the Left-Congress alliance should join Trinamool Congress to contest the upcoming West Bengal Assembly polls to stop the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from coming to power in the state.

Speaking to ANI, Ghosh said, “TMC’s Tapas Roy is welcoming CPM and Congress party repeatedly by asking them to join hands in defeating BJP. However, this is not a statement by Tapas Roy but of TMC party. Nobody from TMC can dare to say anything without the permission of (TMC) high command.”

“TMC has realised that it is impossible for them to win against BJP by fighting all alone, ‘Parivartan’ is bound to happen. I think what he has said is true. Fight against BJP altogether, we are ready too to bring the much-needed parivartan. People of Bengal understood that they no more need Mamata but BJP,” Ghosh added.

Roy, while addressing a public rally at Bankura on Friday, said, “They (BJP) are saying that they will rule Bengal. I want to tell Congressmen and Left party leaders that Arup Khan (Onda TMC MLA) will join your procession. Congress and the Left can’t do it alone. You also know that this is not possible with your declining energy. That’s why you two have come together.”

In 2016’s Assembly polls, Left and Congress came together and bagged 76 seats whereas TMC then bagged 211 seats.

Congress and Left parties soon to conclude their seat-sharing procedure through a couple of final rounds of meetings by next week for upcoming Bengal assembly election confirm party sources.

Earlier, Congress and the Left Front alliance held two rounds of meetings and finalised a seat-sharing agreement for 193 of the total 294 seats in the upcoming Assembly elections.

Nirmala Defends Budget: ‘Common People Our Cronies’

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday hit back at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday over his “Hum do, Hamare do” jibe and said that the “real cronies” of the government are the common people of the country.

She also used the jibe multiple times in her reply to the Union Budget discussion in Lok Sabha, saying that MGNREGA was used by the Congress party for their “cronies” and their “hum do hamare do”.

“For those who are constantly accusing us of dealing with cronies – SVANidhi (PM Street Vendor’s AtmaNirbhar Nidhi) doesn’t go to cronies. ‘Damads’ (Sons-in-law) get land in states which are governed by some parties – Rajasthan, Haryana once upon a time.” she said.

The Finance Minister alleged that Congress launches schemes but lacks the will to use them, and misuses them to favour cronies.

“Who are our cronies? Our cronies are the common ‘janata’ (people) of this country. You have given birth to MGNREGA but you should also take credit for mismanagement of MGNREGA and having given MNGREGA to ghost workers. Congress party gives birth to these schemes but lacks the will to use them, and misuses them to favour cronies. ‘Hum do hamare do’ – this is what these schemes are useful for,” she said.

“They come up with schemes, announce with big amounts and estimates, but they are not utilised and the actuals are far lesser than the original allotted. This means that they either don’t care for it or they give it to their cronies and forget their actual workers,” she added.

Speaking further, Sitharaman said: “Where are the cronies? They are hiding probably in the shadow of that party which has been rejected by the people. The shadows who were invited to even develop a port. They invited, no open tenders, no global tenders.”

She further alleged, “Kerala MP Shashi Tharoor had invited a crony to develop a port without open tenders or bidding and they call us crony capitalists? This is because there is no ‘Damad’ in Kerala, the Damad is here.”

Earlier on Thursday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi while participating in the discussion on the union budget in Lok Sabha, had referred to the family planning slogan of ‘Hum do, Hamare do’ (we too and our two children), and alleged that the government was being run on this agenda and accused it of promoting “crony capitalism”.
