‘From Self-Pity In School To Self-Confidence In Law College’

Once bullied and jeered at in school for being vertically challenged, Harwinder Kaur, 24, from Jalandhar, Punjab, is today an inspiration for countless people for her grit and positivity

As a growing child in Rama Mandi, Jalandhar (Punjab), I had similar dreams and aspirations as of any small town girl my age. I was a promising child of doting parents. But soon I started realising that I was different in my physical appearance; my height stopped increasing and I drew curious looks. It hurt. I withdrew from public gaze and started taking a step back in life.

After my admission to Police DAV Public School, I faced new challenges. There was much bullying. Junior students would measure up their height with me and made disparaging remarks. There was support from many friends too, who were ready to fight for me but I would step in to avoid a scene.

Once I was denied participation at a school dance event due to my short height. I love dancing, especially bhangra. But the teacher in-charge didn’t even see how I performed or what my talent was. That incident left a humiliating imprint on my memory. I stopped participating in any co-curricular activities thereto.

At family gatherings, several relatives showed mock concern. Some elders were protective, some would pass snide comments while a few showed sympathy. But no one treated me normally. I wouldn’t react but it pinched. I began to avoid family events too.

While I would put up a brave face in public before other students and relatives, I cried secretly at home. I would curse myself and question God why he made me like this. I asked my mother about my condition and she would always say the Lord has reasons to make someone in a particular way and that if I was born like this I must be special and gifted with some other virtue. I could hardly understand her reasoning.

After passing out Class 12, I felt relieved that I would not have to attend the school again. I hadn’t even thought of pursuing higher studies. I thought I will now spend rest of my time in the comfort of my family.

A turning point came when I overheard a conversation between my father and brother about his future plans. In our society we are well aware that the plans for a male child are given more importance than a girl child. I realized that my parents had anyways never spoken to me about my future. Possibly, they knew that I was scared of stepping out for further studies. I too had never discussed about my future ever with them.

I realized that even my parents do not expect anything from me. At night, I could not sleep and kept brooding over my future. I could have taken the conversation between my father and brother negatively as well but I decided to do something worthwhile in life. I didn’t want to be a burden on my family. I felt I needed to participate in supporting my family ahead of my brother.

As a child, I had thought of becoming an airhostess but I now realized that my career choice must help me grow and match my strength and capabilities.

A major flaw of my personality was lack of confidence. Thus to build that confidence, I decided a Law degree will come handy as an instrument of knowledge. In the field of law, your physical appearance doesn’t matter; I would not be judged there by my height if my argument was strong enough to hold.

I took admission in KCL Institute of Laws, Jalandhar. I have to tell you here that everything that I missed out in my school days was duly compensated in the law college. The five years of law were full of good times, like a balm for the bitter memories, thanks to my friends and teachers there.

My parents were proud of my law degree. I felt fulfilled. It was an answer to everyone who doubted my capabilities due to my height. Even before I became an advocate and joined the Jalandhar court for practice, I had become known amongst my colleagues and seniors there because of several appearances in the media. My dreams have changed too. I now want to handle cases related to women and child issues, because they are the ones who cannot stand for themselves. I also wish to crack Judicial services and become a judge.

Meanwhile, joining social media platforms brought further positive changes in my life. I got recognition and much love from people across the country and social spectrum (she has more than 1.12 lakh followers on social media). I love stitching and wearing ethnic salwar suits. During lockdown, I would stitch suits for myself, wear it, make a video and post it. Soon, my videos started getting viral.

At one point in time I didn’t even like getting a photo clicked. All that has changed. I merely enjoy my life and share my joyful times in random posts on social media. That sends a positive message to people that even with a short height she is enjoying her life so much. People who would earlier laugh at me today send me messages asking for solutions to their problems.

Earlier I would look at myself through the eyes of others and cursed myself. Now that I have perfectly accepted myself I am fully enjoying my life. My mother has been my biggest support and strength. My father being a policeman had less time to spend with us due to call of duty but my mom has given her 100 percent. My friends and family always pamper me and because of my short height they find me cute and I do take advantage for that too.

India Committed To Bring Back Fugitive Choksi: MEA

As court proceedings against fugitive diamantaire Mehul Choksi continue in Dominica, India has said it is committed to bringing him back to India.

Choksi is involved in PNB bank fraud case of Rs 14,000 crores. He fled to Antigua and Barbuda in January 2018.
Choksi was apprehended in Dominica recently after he entered the country illegally and was reportedly planning to escape to Cuba. However, the fugitive businessman claims that he was kidnapped and then brought to Dominica.

India is expecting Dominica to repatriate the fugitive as he committed a crime in India and has a red corner notice against him.

He concealed facts and got Antigua citizenship, where he enjoyed constitutional protection, but he has no cover in Dominica and India is pushing for his repatriation.

Talking to reporters here, MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said India remains steadfast in its efforts that fugitives are brought back.

“He (Choksi) is currently in the custody of Dominica with some legal proceedings underway. We will continue to ensure he is brought to back India,” the spokesperson said. He was answering a query related to Choksi’s extradition.

It is learnt that a team of six Indian officials is in Dominica to pursue the matter. The team consists of officials from the Central Bureau of Investigation, Enforcement Directorate and Ministry of External Affairs. Today is the second day of hearing in the case that Choksi is facing in Dominican court. (ANI)

‘Dip In Terror, Stone-Pelting Incidents Point At Normalcy’

Indian Army Chief General MM Naravane on Thursday said very few terrorist-initiated incidents and stone-pelting cases have taken place in the Union Territory and this indicates a return to “normalcy” in Jammu and Kashmir.

Addressing media, General Naravane asserted that the Army is prepared and has taken all necessary steps for the smooth conduct of Amarnath yatra.
“There have been very few terrorist-initiated incidents, hardly any cases of stone-pelting which indicates a return to a sense of normalcy. People also want the same and it is a good thing. In this context of return to normalcy, we are from our side prepared and we have taken all necessary steps for the smooth conduct of Amarnath yatra,” he said.

“After a long time, we have reached a situation where peace and tranquility prevails. My message to youth is that only if there is peace, we can have development, then we can prosper together. Shun this path of violence and embrace the future,” he added.

The Army chief said that there have been decades of mistrust between Pakistan and India and pointed out that the onus is entirely on Pakistan to build trust with India.

“The terror infrastructure on the other side of the LoC continues, therefore there cannot be any slackening on our preparedness or alertness,” Naravane said.

“There have been decades of mistrust between Pakistan and India, the situation can not change overnight. If they continue to observe the ceasefire, stop and desist from pushing terrorists across India then these steps will incrementally build up trust. The onus is entirely on Pakistan,” he added.

During his 2-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir, Army chief Gen Naravane reviewed the security situation along the LoC. Local Commanders briefed on security situation and measures taken to foil infiltration by terrorists. He interacted with and complimented troops for morale and high state of operational preparedness.

Regarding Sadbhavana activities, Naravane said, “When the local administration could not reach out to far-flung areas to carry out development activities, the Army carried out Sadbhavana which helped a long way to ameliorate sufferings and needs of the local population. As the situation has improved and administration is able to reach out to these areas, we will now also change our strategies and recalibrate Sadbhavana activities in sync with local administration.” (ANI)

Japan To Supply 1.2mn Covid-19 Vaccines To Taiwan

Japan has decided to supply 1.2 million doses of a COVID-19 vaccine to Taiwan, a move that is set to irk China who Taipei has accused of blocking their access to the much-needed vaccine.

Tokyo plans to send the doses of AstraZeneca as early as Friday, NHK World reported. This development comes as Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide had pledged at an online summit to send 30 million vaccine doses overseas.
Last week, Japan had said it would consider sharing its COVID-19 vaccines with other countries as a ruling party committee urged it to provide a portion of its AstraZeneca vaccine stock to Taiwan.

Amid China’s pressure to block access to the Covid-19 vaccine to Taiwan, former US assistant secretary of defense on Wednesday had said the Biden administration’s plan to donate COVID-19 vaccine doses worldwide should include Taiwan.

This comes as Washington announced in May that 80 million vaccine doses would be shipped abroad by the end of June to aid the international community amid the pandemic.

Making a case for Taiwan, former assistant secretary of defense Randall G. Schriver said “Taiwan faces a uniquely difficult political obstacle as the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is jeopardizing Taiwan’s public health for its authoritarian political objectives.”

“The CCP has aggressively sought to thwart Taiwan’s vaccine efforts. From late-stage meddling of vaccine purchasing contracts to condemnation of allies’ offers of assistance, it is likely these efforts will continue as Taiwan pursues avenues to secure vaccine support.”

Taiwan is critically vulnerable to an outbreak and its population density is highly susceptible to rapid transmission of COVID-19, Schriver said.

Taiwan on Monday had said China continues to sabotage the island’s plan to procure COVID-19 vaccines.

Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) made these remarks after the Chinese Foreign Ministry claimed that Taiwan plans to achieve independence through the COVID-19 vaccine.

China has continued to isolate Taiwan in the international arena, such as blocking the nation’s participation in the World Health Assembly, the MAC said.

The MAC further stated that that Beijing has also been interfering with Taiwan’s attempts to acquire Germany’s BioNTech vaccines. A contract with the German biotech company was cancelled after it insisted Taiwan remove “country” from a press release announcing the agreement. (ANI)

Rahul Asks Citizens To Raise Voice For Free Vaccination

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday asked the citizens of the country to demand free COVID-19 vaccination.

In a tweet, the Congress leader said, “Vaccines are the strongest shield to protect us against the Covid-19 pandemic. You all should also raise your voice for free vaccination of all citizens and wake up the Central government! #SpeakUpForFreeUniversalVaccination.”
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also voiced her concerns about the ongoing Covid-19 vaccination drive in the country.

In her tweet, she said, “We are one of the biggest vaccine manufacturers in the world. Yet only 3.4 percent of our population is fully vaccinated. Who is responsible for India’s confused and dithering vaccination program? #SpeakUpForFreeUniversalVaccination”

India commenced its first phase of the Covid-19 vaccination drive on January 16 this year. In the first phase, healthcare workers and frontline workers were inoculated.

As per the Union Health Ministry, the cumulative number of Covid-19 vaccine doses administered in the country has exceeded 21.85 crore today under the nationwide vaccination drive. A total of 21,85,46,667 vaccine doses have been administered through 30,91,543 sessions, as per the provisional report till 7 am today.

On May 28, Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar said that India will vaccinate all its people against Covid-19 by December 2021 and slammed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for allegedly doing politics over vaccines.

His remarks came after Rahul Gandhi pointed out earlier in May that only three per cent of the country’s population have been vaccinated since the vaccination drive began on January 16.

“The Union Health Ministry last week explained the framework of the administration of 216 crore COVID vaccine doses by December 2021. It means 108 crore people will be vaccinated. It clearly mentioned the vaccines like Covaxin, Covishied, Zydus Cadila, Sputnik V and others for the purpose. So people should understand the immunization against COVID in India will be completed before December 2021,” Javadekar had said. (ANI)

Antigua PM Reaffirms Stand On Choksi’s Extradition

By Naveen Kapoor

Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda Gaston Browne on Wednesday said that his administration stands by its request for Dominica to extradite Indian-born fugitive diamantaire Mehul Choksi directly back to India, “where he is still a citizen.”

“Instead of subjecting himself to an inquiry as required by law, he (Mehul Choksi) used the courts to stay the revocation of his citizenship,” Antigua PM told ANI.

“My administration stands by its request to Dominica to extradite Mehul Choksi directly back to India where he is still a citizen,” he added.

The Antigua Prime Minister told ANI that Mehul Choksi “changed his lawyer to a well-known member of the UPP who had promised him protection, for campaign funding”.

“That’s why they want that he shouldn’t be deported to India, but back to Antigua where he could continue to hide behind constitutional protections,” Browne said.

The Antigua Prime Minister also shared a notice of October 14, 2019 in which he had proposed depriving Choksi of his citizenship in Antigua and Barbuda

“As Minister with responsibility for Citizenship in Antigua and Barbuda, I hereby propose to make an order pursuant to section 8 of the Antigua and Barbuda Citizenship Act, Cap. 22 to deprive you of Antigua and Barbuda citizenship on the grounds of wilful concealment of material facts and/or false representation to support your application for citizenship of Antigua and Barbuda,” said the notice signed by Browne and sent to Mehul Choksi. He was required to respond to it in a month.

Earlier today, Associates Times citing sources had reported that Mehul Choksi’s brother, who is also a bank defaulter, allegedly promised election funding to Dominica’s Leader of the Opposition Lennox Linton in exchange for pushing Mehul Choksi’s abduction theory.

The sources said Chetan Chinu Bhai Choksi had met Linton on May 30, where they discussed several aspects related to Mehul Choksi’s arrest and agreed on the commitment that in exchange for token money and promise of election donation, the opposition leader will press the matter in Parliament.

They also told Associates Times that Chetan disclosed during the conversation that Mehul had reached Dominica on his own, but they require the assistance of the opposition to tackle the matter in court and against the Dominica government to make them believe that he was abducted by Antiguan and Indian police.

Sources cited by Associates Times also said Chetan gave Linton token money of USD 200,000 and promised him more than a million-dollar of financial assistance in the upcoming general elections and in exchange Linton would issue statements favouring Mehul Choksi.

It reported that Linton, who had remained mum on the matter, has now aggressively initiated his attacks on the government after the meeting with Mehul Choksi’s brother.

It also reported that the Dominican Leader of Opposition has a long history of taking money from people for delivering unauthorized promises. Al Jazeera reported that in 2019 Linton had promised a diplomatic passport to some investor in exchange for election funds amounting to about USD 200,000.

In October 2017, Linton also allegedly supported the separation propaganda of Brahim Ghali, who is facing critical criminal charges in the National Court of Spain. This image of the leader has raised questions on his instant stand in favour of Mehul Choksi, who is wanted for fraud charges in India.

However, in an exclusive interview with ANI, Linton denied the allegations, claiming that he has never known or met Chetan Choksi.

“I don’t know Chetan Choksi, I have never seen Chetan Choksi. I’ve never spoken to or with Chetan Choksi, I think there is an online story coming from a publication called Something times, I’ve never seen this website. I think this publication must be associated with passport selling friends of some of these governments in the region,” he told ANI.

He also said the report was a “total lie”‘ and there was absolutely no truth to it, adding that he had no private residence in Marigot, as it was blown away by a hurricane and that he was not even present in Marigot on May 30, as suggested by Associates Times.

“I have not received any money from anybody in exchange for favours or as a result of things that have done or not done or promised to do or not do,” he said.

Calling the report an “absolute garbage”, Linton said the political opposition in Dominica had no contacts with Mehul Choksi, his agents or his associates.

“We have not met with Mehul Choksi and his associate and not even his family members. We don’t know them. There is absolutely no arrangement for them to for any funding for the campaigning or anything there is no such arrangement. This is absolutely false..,” he said.

Meanwhile, a team from India has arrived in Dominica, ahead of a Caribbean court hearing that will decide on whether fugitive diamantaire Mehul Choksi will be deported to India. (ANI)

Centre Decides To Cancel Class 12 Board Examinations

The government on Tuesday decided that class XII board exams of CBSE would not be held this year in view of the uncertain conditions due to COVID-19 and the feedback obtained from various stakeholders.

The government said that CBSE will take steps to compile the results of class XII students as per a well-defined objective criteria in a time-bound manner. It was also decided that like last year, in case some students desire to take the exams, such an option would be provided to them by CBSE, as and when the situation becomes conducive.
The decisions were taken at a review meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the class XII board exams of CBSE.

The Prime Minister said that the decision on class XII CBSE exams has been taken in the interest of students.

Officials at the meeting gave a detailed presentation on the wide and extensive consultation held so far and views received from all stakeholders, including state governments.

The Prime Minister said COVID-19 has affected the academic calendar and the issue of board exams has been causing immense anxiety among students, parents and teachers, which must be put to an end.

Acoording to a PMO release, the Prime Minister said that the COVID-19 situation is a dynamic situation across the country.

While the numbers are coming down in the country and some states are managing the situation through effective micro-containment, some states have still opted for a lockdown. Students, parents and teachers are naturally worried about the health of the students in such a situation.

The Prime Minister said that students should not be forced to appear for exams in such a stressful situation.

He stressed that the health and safety of students “are of utmost importance and there would be no compromise on this aspect” and added that in today’s time, such exams cannot be the reason to put the youth at risk.

The Prime Minister said that all stakeholders need to show sensitivity for students, and directed officials to ensure that the results are prepared in accordance with well-defined criteria, in a fair and time-bound manner.

“In view of the uncertain conditions due to COVID and the feedback obtained from various stakeholders, it was decided that Class XII Board Exams would not be held this year. It was also decided that CBSE will take steps to compile the results of class XII students as per a well-defined objective criteria in a time-bound manner,” the release said

“It was also decided that like last year, in case some students desire to take the exams, such an option would be provided to them by CBSE, as and when the situation becomes conducive,” it added.

Referring to the wide consultative process, the Prime Minister expressed appreciation that a student-friendly decision has been reached after consulting all stakeholders from across the length and breadth of India. He also thanked the states for providing feedback on this issue.

The Prime Minister had earlier held a high-level meeting on May 21 which was attended by ministers and officials. Thereafter a meeting under the chairmanship of the Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh was held on May 23 which was attended by education ministers of states. Various options for conduct of CBSE examinations were discussed in the meeting and feedback obtained from the States and UTs.

The government had earlier decided to cancel the class X board exams conducted by CBSE.

Today’s meeting was attended by Union Ministers of Home, Defence, Finance, Commerce, Information and Broadcasting, Petroleum, and Women and Child Development. Principal Secretary to PM, Cabinet Secretary and secretaries of School Education and Higher Education Departments and other officials also attended the meeting. (ANI)
