Israel Embassy Blast: 4 Students From Kargil Arrested

The Special Cell of Delhi Police on Thursday arrested four students from Jammu and Kashmir, in connection with a blast that took place on January 29 this year outside the Israel Embassy in New Delhi.

The students hail from Kargil in Jammu and Kashmir, the police said.
A team of Delhi Police went to Kargil to arrest the four students and later obtained the transit remand from a local court to bring them to Delhi.

“Delhi Police has arrested the students after obtaining a transit remand from a local court. The arrest was made under a separate FIR. They were questioned earlier, and their questioning will continue. Their phones were switched off at the same time on the day of the blast,” the police added.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is undertaking the main investigation in the explosion that took place in the near Israeli Embassy on January 29.

During the explosion earlier this year, windscreens of several cars parked in the vicinity of the Embassy on Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Road in New Delhi were found damaged.

At the time, sources had confirmed that ammonium nitrate was used for the explosion and added this blast may be a trial of some “bigger conspiracy”.

Almost five months after the blast, the NIA had released CCTV footage of two suspects near the embassy before the blast. The agency had launched a manhunt for the two persons and has placed a reward of Rs 10,00,000 for any information in connection with the explosion.

The footage revealed that a cab had dropped two persons near the embassy and the Delhi Police Special Cell has contacted the concerned cab driver and enquired about the two persons.

Police had also found a camera hidden behind a tree near the blast site. In the footage retrieved from the camera, the timestamp was of the year 1970 but the content is not clear and police are investigating it to ascertain information.

Israeli ambassador to India, Ron Malka had suspected that blast outside the Israeli Embassy here could be a terror attack and asserted that there is full cooperation between New Delhi and Tel Aviv to investigate the explosion. (ANI)

A Woman Bodybuilding Champion

‘Some Doubted My Orientation; A Few Called Me Transgender’

Geeta Saini, the winner of 2021 Senior Women National Bodybuilding competition, talks about gender stereotypes and her transition from an overweight girl to a muscular athlete

People see me as a woman bodybuilding champion today, they see the shine of the gold medal that I won but they know not the struggle and sacrifice behind that glitter.

My journey to being a bodybuilder started with my decision to hit the gym for weight loss. I was overweight (around 110kg) at the age of 23 years. Working out for two to three hours a day and a strict diet plan helped me shed 46 kg in one year. However, my skin loosened up and its texture deteriorated. At 23, I started looking like a 50-year old.

Geeta Saini Age-

Geeta Saini bodybuilder age is only 33 years.

I slipped into depression. It was my elder brother, Sachin Saini, a bodybuilder himself, who suggested that I should start weight training to tone up my skin. This led me to hit the gym again. I soon got passionate about pumping iron. I had no intention of being a body builder; I was a graphic designer by profession. All I wanted was to be fit.

But as luck would have it, my brother had to quit bodybuilding to take care of family business while I took it up more seriously. I started practicing to compete in state level competition and in 2017, reached Top Ten of Haryana Senior Women’s Bodybuilding Competition in Gurgaon.

By sheer grit, Saini transformed herself from an overweight youth to a professional bodybuilder

I then started training under the coach Yatinder Singh and the next year (2018) bagged Bronze medal. The following year, I won the Gold in the state. My next target was National Gold. However, the pandemic and lockdowns that followed in 2020, the training and the championship event impacted adversely. Finally, the national event was held in April 2021 where I won a Gold.

Ours is a male dominating society. Choosing professional bodybuilding had its share of challenges for me. My family expected me to take up corporate position, law or medicine. Bodybuilding belonged to oddballs, they said. I had the support of my mother and elder brother but my father disapproved of it. I had a strong bond with my father; I was his spoilt child. So, eventually, and thankfully, he too came around to my choice of profession. In fact, he remained one of my biggest supporters till his last breath. In any athletic career, dedication and discipline are important. You are left with few friends or social circle other than your practice. Thus, family support is a pillar to lean on.

Saini piled up awards to win accptance in her social and family circle

The reaction of my relatives and friends was disparaging. They told me I was going to spoil my physique. Some said muscles belonged to men not women. Some even questioned my orientation as a woman. However, as I heaped up laurels and recognition, the same people take pride in being part of my family circle.

When young girls or boys come to me and say that I inspired them to get into bodybuilding, I feel my hard work has paid. I am happy to see that women participation in bodybuilding is progressing gradually. I wish to motivate young girls to follow their dreams, pick up a career of their choice and not be demotivated by what the society has to say about it.

However the social gender stereotypes persist. While my co-athletes respect me, the social acceptance for a female bodybuilder as a sportsperson is yet to materialize. I often face people who address me in derogatory manner, calling me a boy or a transgender. Initially, it came as a shock but I gradually stopped listening to pay heed.

I am single-minded focused on my goal of winning a Gold for my country at international level. I wish to stand at a podium while Indian Tricolour is being raised and the national anthem being played in the background. As a sportsperson I live for that day.

As Told To Mamta Sharma

Intl Para Shooter Forced To Sell Snacks On Footpath

Dilraj Kaur, who came to be recognised as first international level para shooters in the 15 years since she started out in the sport in 2005, is dealing with financial hardships.

Dilraj, 34, now sells biscuits and chips along with her mother from a roadside stall near Gandhi Park in Dehradun to make her ends meet. “I started para shooting in 2004 and have so far won 28 gold, 8 silver, and 3 bronze medals on the national level and have played some international games also,” Kaur told ANI.

“I thought there will be some light in my house because I have won medals for India but maybe that wasn’t meant to be. When it was the country’s need I was there, but now when I am in need there is no one. Our financial state is very bad which is the reason why we are being forced to sell biscuits and chips to make ends meet,” she said.

Dilraj said that she has received no help from Uttarakhand’s para-shooting community. She said that she is asking for a government job on the basis of sports quota. “I have appealed for a job on the basis of my achievement in sports a number of times but nothing has happened,” she said.

She lost her father in 2019 who was suffering from kidney problems and her brother also died the same year. She is living in a rented house in Dehradun’s Govindgarh.

“My father died in 2019 after a prolonged illness. My brother also died recently. We had to spend a lot of money on their treatment. We had even taken loans for that. Now, My mother and I live in a rented apartment. We pay rent and EMIs from our mother’s pension,” she added.

Extending support to Kaur, a local resident Rajinder Ishtwal said: “The Modi government says ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ which has borne good results on the ground in some states. But it is unfortunate that Dilraj Kaur is forced to sell chips on the road in our state. I request Chief Minister to look into the matter and provide her a government job.”

Dilraj Kaur’s mother Gurdeep Kaur was offered a government job in 2011 but she turned down the job offer saying that her dependent daughter Dilraj should be given the job.

Kaur has participated in the Taiwan World Games in 2007 and World Games in Croatia in 2015. She won the silver medal at the 2009 World Games in Bengaluru. (ANI)

Ex-CM Chautala Completes Jail Term, To Be Freed Soon

Sentence of former Chief Minister of Haryana Chaudhary Om Prakash Chautala has been completed in the JBT case, informed his Lawyer Amit Sahni.

According to Chautala’s Advocate, Tihar Jail Authority has communicated that the Government of GNCT of Delhi has passed an order regarding special remission of 6 months to convicts who are sentenced for 10 years and have already completed 9 years and 6 months of custody including regular remission.
“It has been a battle to seek justice for OP Chautala. We had to approach the Delhi High Court on multiple occasions for his release. The Delhi High Court has reprimanded the Delhi government for not considering his early release despite fulfilling all parameters,” Sahni told ANI.

Tihar Jail Authority informed the lawyer that the convict, Om Prakash Chautala, has completed his sentence and he is eligible for special remission.

“…The said convict will be finally released whenever he formally surrender before the jail Authority as he is currently on Parole due to the COVID-19 situation,” the Tihar Jail Authority said.

Earlier, Lawyer Amit Sahni had approached Delhi High Court for the directions to release the petitioner, OP Chautala, by granting special remission in light of Special Remission Notification issued by the Government of India, as the Petitioner has already undergone the prescribed sentence awarded under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.

His lawyers had submitted that the Petitioner is aged about 83 years old and as per the disability certificate issued by the Dr RML Hospital, New Delhi on April 25, 2013, the petitioner is suffering from 60 per cent permanent disability of Residual Paralysis of both lower limbs and left upper limb.

Chautala was serving a 10-year jail term in the teachers’ recruitment scam which took place in Haryana during his tenure as the state’s chief minister. The jail term was awarded by a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in the national capital. (ANI)

Nusrat Jahan Shamed Indian Culture: Bengal BJP Chief

West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Dilip Ghosh on Wednesday said Trinamool Congress MP Nusrat Jahan has “shamed Indian culture” by applying sindoor, addressing a man as her husband and now stating that she is not married.

Taking to mediapersons, Ghosh said: “Nusrat Jahan is a woman MP. She has shamed the Indian culture by applying sindoor, addressing a man as her husband and inviting the CM to her ‘boubhat’ (reception) and now she says she is not married.”
“This can be Saugata babu’s (TMC MP) ideology and not the ideology of India or Bengal. The party should suspend her or she must resign from the post,” Ghosh added.

The TMC MP had on June 9 claimed in a statement that her marriage with Nikhil Jain was not valid as their wedding was held in a foreign land in Turkey, as per Turkish Marriage Regulation and it did not have recognition in Indian law.

“Being in a foreign land, as per Turkish Marriage Regulation, the ceremony is invalid. Moreover, since it was an inter-faith marriage, it requires validation under the Special Marriage Act in India, which did not happen. As per the court of law, it is not a marriage, but a relationship or a live-in relationship. Thus, the question of divorce does not arise,” Nusrat Jahan said.

Earlier, BJP MP Sanghmitra Maurya had written to the Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla in this regard and demanded that the matter be referred to the Ethics Committee for a detailed “investigation for her illegal and ethical conduct” and appropriate action taken against the Trinamool Congress MP.

Nusrat Jahan, after securing Lok Sabha seat from West Bengal’s Basirhat, had taken oath in Parliament calling herself as “Nusrat Jahan Ruhi Jain”. (ANI)

India’s Response to Covid Diplomacy by Neighbours

As the Second Wave of the COVID 19 pandemic caused unforeseen number of deaths and infections in India during the month of April 2021, geopolitics continued to feed on this tragic time. This phase of tremendous and sudden rise in the number of infections led to all kinds of shortages of medical facilities for the affected. The impact was most severely felt in the number of beds available in the hospitals and supply of medical oxygen. With cases rising in short duration, the already inadequate and poor health infrastructure wilted and soon the situation was visible to the international community.

Countries ranging from United States, Germany, Japan, Australia to China and Brazil responded with medical supplies to help India cope with the crisis. India’s neighbouring countries including Pakistan also extended support. Foreign Ministry of Pakistan offered ventilators, Bi PAP, digital X ray machines, PPEs and related items. The offer followed a message of support by PM Imran Khan. The Edhi Foundation, a non-government humanitarian organization, offered 50 ambulances and accompanying medical staff via a letter to the Indian Prime Minister. These offers of support and help were either ignored or refused by the Indian government.

The offer of help, however, by the Pakistani government through the spokesman of Foreign Ministry, was accompanied with a call to release the imprisoned Kashmiri leaders and for a meaningful dialogue between the two countries. It is notable on February 25, 2021 India and Pakistan agreed on a ceasefire on the Line of Control (LoC), the de facto border in Jammu and Kashmir. This sudden announcement of ceasefire still causes curiosity in India.

Speculations are also rife that the ceasefire might have been caused by a behind the scenes United States intervention as it grapples with a rising China in the subcontinent. With Pakistan firmly intertwined with the Chinese economy and aid, the US may weighed upon its former ally in the region, Pakistan, to effect the ceasefire. India’s rapidly increasing proximity and partnership with the US in various fields is a reality and has started to impact South Asian geopolitics.

In these circumstances, India’s refusal to accept COVID 19 help from Pakistan indicates towards its unwavering stance on terrorist groups based in Pakistan and the linkages with ISI. US withdrawal from Afghanistan and Pakistan’s role thereafter can be a factor in the fragile peace on the LoC and hence the ceasefire. India’s stance towards Pakistan may not witness a substantial change despite these gestures of solidarity during the pandemic.

China now influences politics and events in many parts of Asia and Africa and it has a bearing on India’s neighbours. During the April COVID 19 surge in India, China immediately extended help and support to fight the pandemic. India’s initial response to the offer was lukewarm. This was perhaps reflective of its line after the events in Eastern Ladakh at the Line of Actual Control (LAC) since May 2020. India has reiterated several times that it cannot be business as usual if the situation at LAC caused by Chinese incursions is not resolved.

The Chinese, however, responded with a call to the Chinese businessmen to expedite orders of medical equipment to India. And in the first week of May 2021, President Xi Jinping offered help and support through the Chinese Embassy in New Delhi. Finally, the Chinese through the International Federation of Red Cross Societies and Red Crescent Societies provided equipment and $ 1 million in cash to the Indian Red Cross Society. Officially, however, India chose not to respond to direct offers of Covid support and help from China.

ALSO READ: ‘Vaccine Maitri Raised India’s Stature In World’

This marks a resolute stance by New Delhi as the talks on the remaining areas of contention on the LAC are stalled after eleven rounds of talks at various levels between the two countries. Later, at the BRICS summit meeting on 31st May,2021 Chinese state councillor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi offered collective BRICS support in India’s fight against the pandemic which India accepted as a member and host recorded.

Elsewhere in the neighbourhood, Bangladesh also extended medical assistance to India during the second wave of the pandemic. Initially, 10,000 vials of the injection, Remdesivir were sent to India in the first consignment. Later, towards the end of May, more than 2500 boxes of medicines and protective equipment were sent across the border to India. India accepted both the consignments and expressed thanks through the official channels.

The surprising act, on behalf of Bangladesh, in the context of the sub-continent is the offer of a $200 million currency swap to Sri Lanka to tide over its massive debt crisis affected by the Chinese investments.

The pandemic and its second wave in India, therefore, has not impacted the geopolitics in the Indian sub-continent. Apart from the ceasefire with Pakistan, which, this time has a mysterious quality, and its longevity remains in question, there are no positives in the relationship as the support extended in the second wave of India was refused or not responded to. Similarly, with China, problems at the LAC remain despite protracted negotiations between Beijing and New Delhi. India’s diplomacy with smaller neighbours in the sub-continent has the omnipotent Chinese shadow, though there is gradual realization in the region, of the ways and means of China post the increasing credibility of reports of origins of the COVID 19 from Wuhan.

PM’s Meet On Kashmir: Know What’s On The Table

By Naveen Kapoor

Gupkar Alliance, which includes mainstream political parties of Jammu and Kashmir, has accepted the invitation of the all-party meeting called by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 24.

This is the first high-level interaction between the Centre and political leadership mainly from Kashmir since August 5, 2019 when the Centre revoked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir and the state was bifurcated into two union territories.

Former Jammu and Kashmir chief ministers Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah, Ghulam Nabi Azad and Mehbooba Mufti are among those invited for the meeting.

Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla has reached out to 14 leaders including Congress’ Ghulam Nabi Azad, Tara Chand and GA Mir; NC’s Dr Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah; PDP’s Mehbooba Mufti, J-K Apni Party’s Altaf Bukhari; BJP’s Ravinder Raina, Nirmal Singh and Kavinder Gupta; CPI(M)’s M Y Tarigami, and National Panthers Party’s Prof Bheem Singh; Peoples Conference’s Sajad Gani Lone.

Home Minister Amit Shah, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor Manoj Sinha and Home Secretary would also attend the meeting.

It is learnt from reliable sources that no fixed agenda has been set for the meeting and a freewheeling discussion is expected on June 24.

However, delimitation, statehood and assembly elections are expected to remain key issues to be discussed at the all-party meeting

Sources familiar with developments told ANI the move to reach out to political leadership in Jammu and Kashmir has sent a very positive message especially in the valley and it is expected to give momentum to the political process in a big way and talks can pave way for positive developments.

Jammu Kashmir witnessed District Development Council last year and also panchayat elections.

Home Minister Amit Shah had said in February this year in Lok Sabha that statehood will be restored to J-K at an appropriate time.

Sources indicate that the Centre would be willing to discuss all issues on the table including the statehood

Although People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) has agreed to attend the meeting, its leaders especially Peoples Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti said that they will ask New Delhi to restore Article 370 and 35 A. (ANI)
