WHO Warns Of Early Stages Of Third Covid Wave

World Health Organisation (WHO) chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Thursday warned the world about the ‘early stages’ of COVID-19 third wave amid Delta surge.

“Unfortunately…we are now in the early stages of a third wave”, he said. On Wednesday, the head of WHO said that Delta variant’s spread, along with increased social mobility and the inconsistent use of proven public health measures, is driving an increase in both case numbers and deaths.

Recalling the sustained decline in COVID-19 cases and deaths that was being driven, in recent months, by increasing vaccination rates in Europe and North America, he sounded alarms over the fresh reversal of that positive trend, reported UN News.

Meanwhile, said Tedros, the virus is continuing to evolve, resulting in more transmissible variants.

“The Delta variant is now in more than 111 countries and we expect it to soon be the dominant COVID-19 strain circulating worldwide if it isn’t already,” he said.

Last week marked the fourth consecutive week of rising cases of COVID-19 globally, with increases recorded in all but one of WHO’s six regions. Deaths are also rising again, after 10 weeks of steady decline.

Tedros also drew the Emergency Committee on COVID-19’s attention to the ongoing “shocking disparity” in the global distribution of vaccines, as well as unequal access to life-saving tools, reported UN News.

He reiterated his concern that inequity has created a two-track pandemic – namely, one track for countries with the greatest access to vaccines, who are lifting restrictions and reopening their societies, and a second track for those without vaccines access who are left “at the mercy of the virus.”

Many countries still have not received any vaccines, and most have not received enough.

Tedros reiterated WHO’s appeal for a massive push to vaccinate at least 10 per cent of the population of every country by September, at least 40 per cent by the end of 2021, and at least 70 per cent by mid-2022.

Emphasising that vaccines alone will not stop the pandemic, he called upon countries to persist with a “tailored and consistent approach”.

It means using the full array of available public health and social measures and taking a comprehensive risk management approach to mass gatherings.

“So many countries around the world have shown that this virus can be stopped and contained with these measures,” he stressed.

To provide support, WHO recently issued updated guidance to facilitate a risk-based approach for opening.

The Agency is also reviewing options to digitalise the International Certificate for Vaccination and Prophylaxis, to support a harmonised approach for recording vaccination status, reported UN News. (ANI)

Mohammad Manan, 25, a migrant worker who came to Delhi-NCR from Bihar, says he has survived so far but is worried about an impending third Covid wave

I came to Delhi- NCR nearly a decade ago for work. Supporting a family is no easy task but I was managing it fine until the pandemic struck.  Since then, things have gotten very confusing and uncertain. The recurring lockdowns, the first wave, the second wave, it is a difficult time for everyone.

After the first wave last year, we thought we had survived the virus. But then came the second wave and I had to return to my village Sonbarsha in Saharsa district (Bihar) to be with my ageing parents. Most migrant workers from the locality I live in left for their native places as they did during first lockdown. We braved the first wave, but the second wave was worse than the first, so we decided to leave.

Lockdowns have impacted everyone’s earnings, be it migrant workers like me or people who run businesses. Everyone has been worried about their job or business security. I went home in April and came back in June-end, so basically I stayed in Bihar for two months. I strained my savings to travel in Three-Tier AC in the train because I was worried about contracting the virus. After all I was going back to earn a living and couldn’t afford to fall sick as soon as I entered the city of my livelihood for so many years.

When I reached Ghaziabad (NCR), unlock had begun and someone else had been hired in my place at the optical shop I worked for. I spent two weeks in agony not knowing what I would do for a living and applied at various places. A family of six is dependent on me. My wife works as a domestic help and supports the family, but in these times one needs to have enough savings. Kabhi medical help ki zaroorat ho to hamare pas hath me kuch paise hon (there should be reserve cash for medical situation).

Luckily I got my old job back. I wish there were work opportunities in my village too. Those two months I earned nothing.

Even though I have my old job back, predictions of a third wave has me worried. What will we do if it is even more dangerous than the second and the lockdown stricter and longer? So many business days that have gone waste. Every month I send some money to my parents and God forbid if anyone contracts the virus! I wish the government improves the healthcare facilities in rural areas and also figured out ways to support people who have lost their jobs or whose businesses were impacted.

Right now, we are just about managing somehow but my biggest strength is my wife’s optimism and courage. She says we need to take one day at a time, and be thankful for each day that we have survived. She says even though our position is shaky we can keep figuring out newer ways to earn. I have picked up some tailoring skills and do minor alterations etc and get paid for it.

So we believe God helps those who work hard. My workplace is around 15 minutes away from my home and I use my cycle to commute. Thank God I use a cycle, with the price of petrol shooting up continuously driving a bike is a costly affair.

Petrol Prices Reach New High; ₹107/L In Mumbai

Petrol prices in Mumbai rose to Rs 107.54 per litre on Thursday, touching another record high figure after fuel rates were hiked again.

The price of diesel in Mumbai was Rs 97.45 per litre.
Petrol prices were hiked by up to 35 paise whereas diesel prices were increased by 15 paise.

In Delhi, the retail price of both petrol and diesel stood at Rs 101.54 per litre and Rs 89.87 per litre respectively.

As for Bhopal, petrol prices soared to Rs 109.89 per litre and diesel costs Rs 98.67 per litre.

West Bengal’s Kolkata reported Rs 101.74 per litre for petrol and Rs 93.02 per litre for diesel.

Rates have been increased across the country and differ from state to state depending on the incidence of value-added tax.

Meanwhile, Congress has decided to launch a 10-day nationwide agitation against inflation from July 7.

Several political parties have protested against the increasing fuel prices across the country. Political leaders including BSP chief Mayawati, Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee have raised concerns over the rising fuel prices and demanded its reduction. Taapsee Launches Own Production House

Bollywood actor Taapsee Pannu, who has been basking in the success of her back-to-back hits, after working for more than a decade in films, recently added another career milestone by launching her production house, Outsiders Films.

For this, she has joined forces with Pranjal Khandhdiya, a content creator and producer for over 20 years. He has been involved in the production of renowned films such as ‘Super 30′, ’83’, ‘Soorma’, ‘Piku’, ‘Mubarakan’, ‘Azhar’ and is also producing ‘Rashmi Rocket’, which stars Taapsee in the lead.

Indian film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh confirmed the news on his Instagram account and wrote, “TAAPSEE TURNS PRODUCER… #TaapseePannu turns producer… Joins hands with Pranjal Khandhdiya [involved in the production of #Super30, #83TheFilm, #Soorma, #Piku, #Mubarakan]… The production house – Outsiders Films – will produce a thriller, with #Taapsee headlining it.”

Elated with the launch of her production house, Taapsee shared, “I am thrilled to embark upon this new journey and diversify my love for cinema with my production house ‘Outsiders Films’. Having my business ventures, management comes naturally to me. Hence, I always thought of setting my own production house. The audience and the industry have given me a lot of support and love over the 11 years of my career.”

Explaining her aim as a producer, she continued, “With Outsiders Films, I aim to give back to the industry and empower talent who are looking for a breakthrough and come with no background like me. Pranjal and I together look forward to opening doors for new and fresh talents, both in front and behind the camera.”

Talking about naming the company, Taapsee added, “Pranjal and I both come from humble backgrounds that’s when the name Outsiders Films clicked with us. We aim to produce meaningful, entertaining, and quality content.”

Speaking about his partnership with Taapsee, Pranjal shared, “Forging a solid partnership needs two people to have a lot of similarities and at the same time different opinions. This is where our partnership becomes so interesting. Taapsee and I both have similar goals, but with varied opinions and approach. Outsiders Films gives us the opportunity to seek our creative goals while complimenting each other at work.”

Rather than just having mere profit-sharing arrangements, Outsiders Films will be doing ground productions for all the projects they are involved in. The first project from the production house will be a thriller, with Taapsee headlining it.

She also owns a wedding planning company and a badminton team called 7 Aces Pune.

On the film front, the 33-year-old-actor is set for a season chock-a-bloc with her next ‘Looop Lapeta’, ‘Rashmi Rocket’, ‘DooBaaraa’, ‘Shabaash Mithu’, and a south film, along with many others in the pipeline. (ANI)

Punjab To Waive Off Loans Of Landless Farmers

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh announced a waiver of Rs 590 crore worth of loans under the Chief Minister’s flagship ‘Debt Waiver Scheme’ for labourers and the landless farming community.

The Punjab Government will pay off loans to the tune of Rs. 590 crore of 2,85,325 members of the Primary Agricultural Cooperative Societies (PACS), thus ensuring a relief of Rs. 20,000 per member, said the Chief Minister.
The cheques would be issued at a state-level function on August 20, said an official spokesperson after a high-level meeting held on Tuesday.

So far, loans worth Rs 4624 crore have been waived off as many as 5.64 lakh farmers under the scheme, which was announced as part of the 2017 poll promises by the Punjab Congress.

In addition, loans of the SC and BC categories have been written off up to the amount of Rs. 50,000 each, including waiver up to Rs. 58.39 crore of 6405 beneficiaries by the SC Corporation and Rs. 20.71 crore of 1225 beneficiaries by the BC Corporation.

The Punjab Government has formulated a Debt Relief Scheme for Farm Labourers and Landless Farming Members of PACS-2019, which will cover only Consumption Loan to the members of the Primary Agricultural Cooperative Societies advanced by District Central Cooperative Banks in the state of Punjab through Primary Agricultural Cooperative Societies.

Among others present at the meeting were Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal, Cooperation Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Additional Chief Secretary (Agriculture) Anirudh Tewari and Financial Cooperation K. Siva Prasad. (ANI)

“It is so gratifying to see, I cannot even express it. This film is just super special to me, I have believed in it and given it my all as an actor, ‘Mimi’ helped me explore so many various emotions within myself and to now see the trailer being unanimously loved with everyone praising it and appreciating what the entire team has done, is just really overwhelming,” she said.

Kriti had to put on 15 kilos for her role in ‘Mimi’, which also features Pankaj Tripathi, Manoj Pahwa and Supriya Pathak.

The news of their relationship surfaced online after a restaurant in Goa shared a few pictures of Kim and Leander Paes spending quality time with each other at a beach.

In one of the images, the two can be seen having a meal together at Pousada by the Beach restaurant.

Kim’s latest Instagram post also hinted that the two might be seeing each other. She posted a picture of herself standing against the backdrop of the azure blue waters.

“Clicked by Mr P,” Kim captioned, hinting Leander Paes has taken the particular image of the ‘Mohabbatein’ fame actor.

A Resurgent Taliban In India’s Backyard

The recent advances by Taliban in Afghanistan compel us to impartially analyse their psyche and reasons for their success and continued survival

The US President Joe Biden in a speech on Thursday 8 July announced that the U.S. military would complete its withdrawal from Afghanistan by August 31, nearly two weeks before his earlier deadline of September 11, announced in April. The U.S. pull-out from Afghanistan, will end the US’s longest overseas war – which cost the lives of around 2,300 US troops and $825 billion monetarily- is a result of the February 2020 agreement that the Trump administration negotiated with the Taliban in Doha, Qatar.

In his latest speech Biden strongly defended his decision to pull U.S. military forces out of Afghanistan, saying the Afghan people must decide their own future, rather than sacrificing another generation of Americans in an unwinnable war. Biden called on countries in the region to help bring about an elusive political settlement between the warring parties. He said the Afghan government should seek a deal with the Taliban to allow them to coexist peacefully.

And this is what has proved to be the red herring amongst the neighbouring and regional countries. Most of the countries have reacted in a guarded manner over the advances of the Taliban forces in Afghanistan since May, who now controls 162 districts in Afghanistan.

In reality the chaotic and unpredictable conditions in Afghanistan will have a significant impact on the regional geo-politics. For starters, the Iranians have started fishing in the troubled waters by inviting the Taliban leadership for talks in Teheran.

Iranian Initiative

The Taliban-Iranian talks began in January this year, as part of Iranian efforts to broker peace between the Afghan government and other factions. The latest round of intra-Afghan talks began on Wednesday 7 July morning by a speech from Iranian foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, who warned that the continuation of conflicts between the government and the Taliban will have ‘unfavourable’ consequences for Afghanistan, noting that a return to the intra-Afghan negotiations is the ‘best solution’.

Earlier, Saeed Khatibzadeh, spokesman for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, had said that Taliban is part of the reality in Afghanistan and they are also talking to the Afghan government. During the recent meeting, Zarif discussed the prospect of Afghan people forming an all-inclusive government, including Taliban.

Pakistan’s Alarm

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan in an op-ed in The Washington Post on 9 June sounded hurt by the accusations of the government in Kabul naming Pakistan as inciting violence in the country.

He further wrote that he would like Pakistan to be ‘a partner for peace in Afghanistan’, which may have ideated from the Indian outreach to the Taliban.

UK’s Concern

The UK it seems is more worried about the presence of Al Qaeda and Daesh elements in Afghanistan and not with the Taliban advances. Sir Alex Younger, former head of MI-6 has cautioned about the terrorism threat to Britain rising, following the US withdrawal and has further said the threat from terrorist groups such as Al Qaeda and Daesh would grow if the UK turns its back on Afghanistan.

But the UK’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Sir Nick Carter, who served several command tours in Afghanistan, believes the Taliban leadership may have learnt from their earlier mistakes. He maintains that if the Taliban expect to share power, or seize it, then they will not want to be seen as international pariahs. Wiser heads amongst the Taliban, especially those who attended the recent peace negotiations, may well argue for a clean break with Al Qaeda in order to secure international acceptance.

India’s Outreach

Indian officials recently met with the Taliban delegation in Doha. This marks a marked policy shift in India’s approach to Afghanistan and Taliban. Besides showing maturity of the policy makers and strategists, the move may accelerate the transition from a non-existent relationship to the inception of a diplomatic engagement, whilst acknowledging Taliban as a critical component of future Afghanistan.

Though Indian policy makers will also be worried about the security threat from the pro-Taliban Pakistani outfits, yet they may have weighed the advantage of engaging with the Taliban and also considered that in future the Taliban might be able to assert pressure on forces inimical to India.

India has always called for ‘an Afghan-led, Afghan-owned and Afghan-controlled process’, and as such, the strategic move to engage with Taliban broadly demonstrates a regional security imperative for India and its efforts to minimise Islamabad’s influence.

Taliban Psyche: American View

The Americans have always wondered what fuels the Taliban to fight against a huge military machine despite the odds. Though in reality this has not led to any effort to try to understand the Taliban’s psyche and their commitment.

However, an American, Carter Malkasian has tried to discuss this in his new book The American War in Afghanistan: A History. Malkasian analyses the Taliban advantage in inspiring Afghans to fight. He opines that their call to fight foreign occupiers, steeped in references to Islamic teachings, resonates well with Afghan identity and psyche.

He says that for Afghans, jihad — more accurately understood as ‘resistance’ or ‘struggle’ than the caricatured meaning it has acquired in the United States — has historically been a means of defence against oppression by outsiders, part of their endurance against invader after invader. The Taliban were able to tie them-selves to religion and to Afghan identity in a way that a government allied with non-Muslim foreign occupiers could not match.

The very presence of Americans in Afghanistan trod on a sense of Afghan identity that incorporated national pride, a long history of fighting outsiders and a religious commitment to defend the homeland. The Taliban’s ability to link their cause to the very meaning of being Afghan was a crucial factor in America’s defeat.

He further says that the Taliban exemplified something that inspired, something that made them powerful in battle, something tied to what it meant to be an Afghan. They cast themselves as representatives of Islam and called for resistance to foreign occupation. Together, these two ideas formed a potent mix for ordinary Afghans, who tend to be devout Muslims but not extremists.

Now, with the Taliban overrunning districts in the north, they will likely press their attack, further emboldened by US departure over the next few weeks. Afghan soldiers and police will suffer from the same morale problems that have plagued them for two decades. Provincial capitals and Kandahar or Mazar-e-Sharif are likely to fall, possibly within a year. After that, Kabul itself will be in danger. The capital may hold, at least for a while, but the government and its allies will struggle to survive, with little chance of regaining what has been lost.

The world it may seem is bound to sit at the same table with Taliban, once they embrace political identity and become part of the political establishment, and this may mark a peaceful future for Afghanistan.

Salahuddin’s Sons Were Actively Involved In Terror Funding

The sons of Hizbul Mujahideen’s founder Syed Salahuddin– Syed Ahmad Shakeel and Shahid Yusuf– who were recently dismissed from their jobs by Jammu and Kashmir administration, were actively involved in terror funding, sources in law enforcement agencies said.

The sources said all the evidence against the two brothers were in files but due to previous governments in Jammu and Kashmir all facts were suppressed and evidence was buried.
Last week, Jammu and Kashmir administration sacked 11 employees including the sons of Salahuddin for working for various terror groups.

PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti slammed the dismissal, alleging that the “witch-hunting and criminalisation of dissent” was taking the country back.

“I’m not supporting anyone. You can’t hold a child responsible for the actions of his father unless and until you have proof. These are not 11 people, they’ve sacked 20-25 this year,” said Mufti.

Salahuddin has been designated as a global terrorist by the US Department Of State and on the most wanted terrorist list of the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

“Syed Ahmad Shakeel and Shahid Yusuf, sons of Hizbul Mujahideen’s founder Syed Salahuddin were actively involved in terror funding and all the evidence was in files but due to favourable regime, the facts were suppressed and evidence was buried,” the sources said.

Evidence reveals that Syed Ahmad Shakeel, who was a backdoor appointee in Sher-I-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) in 1990s, was found to have facilitated terror funding on at least six occasions.

The second son, Shahid Yusuf, yet another “backdoor appointee” in the agriculture department in 2007, is found to have been involved in terror financing on nine occasions, sources said.

“Shahid Yusuf even visited Dubai on a passport where father name was mentioned as Yousuf Mir instead of Syed Mohd Yusuf. This was in 1999-2000. He was accompanied by Nasir Mir, a Hizbul Mujahideen operative who lives in Dubai. During his visit, Shahid Yousuf met his father Salahuddin. He also met Nazir Ahmaed Qureshi, who is originally from Baramulla but now operates his Hawala syndicate from Saudi Arabia and London and finances terror activities in India,” sources in Law enforcement agencies said.

Sources further revealed that Shahid was receiving money from Aijaz Ahmed Bhat aka Aijaz Maqbool Bhat, a close aide of Salahuddin.

Shahid was using multiple IDs to receive these funds from Aijaz. It is pertinent to mention that Aijaz, active cadre of terror outfit Hizbul Mujahideen, crossed over to Pakistan in 1990 and is now responsible for collecting and transferring money to terror modules in Union Territory of J&K.

“Aijaz used various addresses from Saudi Arabia to transfer these funds to Shahid through Western Union Money Transfer. Shahid while working as government employee covertly received these funds to hatch terror conspiracy against the country,” sources said.

Sources have also revealed that his brother Syed Ahmad Shakeel another government employee with SKIMS hatched a conspiracy to wage war against the country while working as a government employee and earning his livelihood through the Indian exchequer.

Shakeel was appointed as a Lab technician in 1990. Although, his activities were known it was unravelled only after the NIA took over a terror funding case originally pursued by the Special Cell of Delhi Police.

The Central anti-terror agency probe revealed that Shakeel in 2009-10 received money on six occasions from Aijaz Ahmed Bhat, the same Hizbul terrorist, who was financing his brother Shahid to carry out terror activities.

“Shahid and Shakeel’s modus operandi were quite similar and both used multiple identities to receive terror funds from multiple addresses in Saudi Arabia. Charges were framed against both the sons last year,” sources further added. (ANI)

The 2021 Primetime Emmy Awards announced their nominations on Tuesday, offering shows like ‘Ted Lasso’, ‘Wandavision’ and ‘The Crown’ recognition in a year that was otherwise marred by the COVID pandemic.

According to Fox News, the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards were announced by father-and-daughter actors Ron Cephas Jones. The duo was also joined by TV academy chief executive Frank Scherma. They began the broadcast with some playful banter about their respective history-making Emmy nominations last year with Ron jokingly jabbing his daughter for only having one trophy compared to his two.

Last year’s ceremony was championed as a major win for inclusiveness with a record number of 35 Black nominees among the 102 contenders for lead, supporting and guest performances in drama, comedy and limited series or TV movies.

The British royal drama ‘The Crown’, in its fourth season moved closer to contemporary events with its version of the courtship and rocky marriage of Prince Charles and Diana Spencer, played by Josh O’Connor and Emma Corrin.

The series tied for the most nominations this year along with Season 2 of the ‘Star Wars’ spinoff series ‘The Mandalorian’ with 24 each.

‘Ted Lasso’, which is a feel-good comedy about a middling American football coach abruptly imported to England to take over a soccer team, scored a nomination for star Jason Sudeikis.

Meanwhile, Disney Plus’ breakout hit ‘Wandavision’ also scored nominations for its core cast members Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany.
