Life of A Jammu-Kashmir Citizen

‘Slowly The Situation On Ground Is Improving In J&K’

Priyanka Pandita, a 29 year old Kashmiri Pandit, says life of a Jammu-Kashmir citizen has improved marginally since August 5, 2019, when the Centre abrogated Article 370

As someone who belongs to Jammu & Kashmir, we see the world differently and in turn are seen differently by the rest of the country (or the rest of the world). So far there has been no possibility of having a good education or work life in Kashmir and those of us who can move out of the state, do so. But when we go to other states for studies or work, most people see us only as Jammu & Kashmir residents and less as people who have dreams, hopes and aspirations of a better life.

Till Class 12 I lived in J&K, but after that I have lived in Uttarakhand, Rajasthan and Karnataka for higher studies and just shifted to Mumbai post-marriage, but the story was the same everywhere… Kashmir just meant violence and terrorism to other people.

It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say we have had an identity crisis of sorts. There are so many of us who long to be a part of the wider landscape but the goings on in Kashmir for the past few decades had led to more and more isolation of the residents of Jammu & Kashmir… until August 2019, when Article 370 was abrogated. It will now be almost two years to that (in my opinion) momentous day and I feel it is in the best interest of Jammu & Kashmir that it happened.

As far as I can see, the ground reality has changed for the better. I now feel like part of a whole and hopefully it will change for other people as well. Identity of the residents of this region won’t be pigeonholed anymore. And it is not just about us Kashmiri Pandits (living in Jammu region) but also many Muslim friends of my father have mentioned how there seems to be more peace around, how the mahaul is more conducive for business and also tourism (of course once coronavirus is under strict control).

Pandita says ‘mahaul’ is more conducive for business and tourism now

The endless curfews, the looming shadow of when violence might erupt, suspension of internet… it was all beginning to take a toll on people who longed for normalcy. Instances of stone pelting have come down. And people have finally begun to listen to each other’s point of view. The communication breakdown that had happened is being repaired little by little. Earlier there was no possibility of having deep conversation with fellow Kashmiris on the matter of terrorism or even how the government was faring.

People would get defensive so quickly and a conversation would turn into an argument. All solutions begin with a conversation and now I feel people have begun to talk to each other a little more openly. I have also begun to worry less about my parents and other loved ones who live there, no matter which part of the country I am in.

I believe Covid was also handled well because the Centre was in charge here. In fact there has been less corruption for the past two years as far as I can see. I last visited my family in November, 2019. After that the pandemic meant travelling has been difficult, but I have kept myself updated.

Also, the local leaders whose policies so far reflected only resistance have begun to think of cooperation (even if it is miniscule right now), I feel after they were arrested or put under house arrest.

I feel once the final creases are ironed out (like the restoration of statehood, elections), Jammu & Kashmir will truly be on the path of development. The Taliban’s advancement in Afghanistan has rung bells of concern for the subcontinent, but I believe that the strong leadership of the current government will keep them at bay and Kashmir will truly flourish, even if it takes one baby step at a time towards the future.

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) on Wednesday took suo motu cognizance of the matter.

PM Congratulates Boxer Lovlina On Winning Bronze

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain after she won the Bronze medal in the women’s welterweight category (64-69kg) at the Tokyo Olympics on Wednesday.

Taking to Twitter, the Prime Minister said: “Well fought Lovlina Borgohain! Her success in the boxing ring inspires several Indians. Her tenacity and determination are admirable. Congratulations to her on winning the Bronze. Best wishes for her future endeavors. #Tokyo2020”.
Busenaz Surmeneli defeated Borgohain by a unanimous decision of 5-0. All five judges gave decisions in the favour of Turkish pugilist as she stamped her dominance.

Lovlina started round one with a good strategy as she didn’t let the Turkish boxer take charge. But soon, Busenaz showed her class and demolished the defence of the Indian as judges ruled the round in her favour.

The second round started just where the first one left as Surmeneli dominated all the way through it. And to make it worse for Borgohain, she sustained a penalty in that round. The last round was more ruthless and clinical from Busenaz as she brutally buried any chances the 23-year-old Indian had of making a comeback. (ANI)

They said that further to yesterday’s meeting of the Chairman with the top brass including defence and home ministers, the government reiterated its willingness to discuss farmers issue, price rise and economic situation in the country.

Naidu urged other parties to take this forward. The opposition also wanted to discuss national security in the context of the Pegasus issue.

The Rajya Sabha Chairman had a meeting with top brass including–Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi, Leader of the House Piyush Goyal– on Monday evening.

Sources said that before Naidu’s meeting with the top brass, the government had reiterated its willingness to discuss farmers issues, price rises and the economic situation in the country.

The sources said the legislative business agreed upon includes the Airports Regulation Authority Bill, General Insurance Nationalisation Amendment Bill, Limited Liability Partnership Amendment Bill, Deposits Insurance Bill. It was also agreed to take up the Notice given by members Binoy Viswam and Shreyas Kumar for annulling the recently issued Information Technology Rules.

Veterans Knew Of CPI-CPM Support To Chinese Agenda: Rtd Gen

With a new book stating that China used its “close connections” with Left parties in India to build opposition to the Indo-US nuclear deal, FINS president Lt Gen DB Shekatkar (retired) said on Tuesday that they had warned that the Indian government to be cautious of China and the communist parties in the country “because they will not let this nuclear deal happen”.

Forum for Integrated National Security (FINS) is a think-tank based in India working on national security-related issues.
Speaking to ANI, Lt Gen Shekatkar (retired) said when UPA was in power, around 40 per cent of the stake in the government was of the Left parties.

“You may call it CPI, CPM or anything but their ideology was the same. China used them to (try and) scuttle the nuclear deal, that is what Vijay Gokhale mentioned in his book. He may not have clearly mentioned many things. I am saying because diplomatic language is different,” he said.

“I have been working with FINS since 2003. We at FINS also studied that China would try to interfere in this deal and we had warned the then government about it. We had warned that the Indian government should be cautious of China and the communist parties within India because they will not let this nuclear deal happen. We had said that they will try their best to make sure this deal does not happen and that is what they did. We informed the government and it might have reached to the foreign ministry, defence ministry and related people that time,” he added.

He maintained effort was made to pressurize the Indian government through Left parties.

“The Chinese made Left parties a medium to do this. Through that medium, they tried to pressurize the Indian government. They made domestic political interference against India’s long-term interest by using Leftist people,” Shekatkar alleged.

Asked whether the government responded to the recommendations given by the Forum, Shekatkar said, “In such a matter government does not respond. It has been going on till now and it will continue like this.”

CPI-M general secretary Sitaram Yechury on Tuesday said that claims in former Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale’s book about China using its “close connections” with the Left parties to build opposition to the Indo-US nuclear deal were “completely false” and they had opposed the deal to safeguard the interests of the country.

Talking to media persons here, he said the stance of Left parties on the nuclear deal during the first UPA government had “no connection with China”.

“We even did not have any discussion with China. There was not even any need to talk to China. If China was opposing the deal, then why it allowed India a waiver in the Nuclear Supplier Group. In the Nuclear Supplier Group, every decision is taken unanimously. It means China had no objections to the nuclear deal,” Yechury told reporters here.

“So it is clear that nuclear power was a gimmick to draw India as military and strategic ally of the US. Today, India has become a junior subordinate partner of the US in military and strategic affairs. Our isolation in Afghanistan is testimony to that. Our foreign policy is now integrated with their foreign policy,” he added.

Yechury claimed the world sees India as a “puppet of America”.

“To safeguard the country from this scenario we had opposed the Indo-US nuclear deal,” Yechury said.

According to media reports, the book, ‘The Long Game: How the Chinese Negotiate with India’, written by Gokhale, says that China used its “close connections” with Left parties domestic “to build” opposition to the nuclear deal. (ANI)

Covid 2nd Wave Not Over Yet, ‘R Number’ High In 8 States: Centre

Underlining that the second wave of COVID-19 is not over yet, the Union Health Ministry on Tuesday said that the Reproduction (R) number is high in eight states adding that case trajectory needs to be controlled there.

Addressing a press conference over the Covid-19 situation in the country, Joint Secretary of Union Health Ministry, Lav Agarwal said whenever R number is above one, it means that the case trajectory is increasing and it needs to be controlled.
These eight states include Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Lakshadweep, Tamil Nadu, Mizoram, Karnataka, Puducherry, Kerala, he informed.

“US, Canada, Australia, and India have 1.2 R number, on average. This means one infected individual is infecting more than one person. R number is high in 8 states of India. Growth rate and active cases are also assessed using the Reproduction (R) Number. It is the average number of new infections generated by one infected individual during the entire infectious period,” he said.

“Whenever R number is above one, it means that the case trajectory is increasing and it needs to be controlled,” the official added.
Agarwal further said that a high number of COVID cases are being reported across the world and the pandemic is far from over.
“As far as India is concerned, the second wave is still not over,” said Agarwal.

Speaking about the case positivity rate in the country, he said, “There are 44 districts where the case positivity rate is over 10 per cent. These districts are in Kerala, Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland among others.”

“There were 279 districts on June 1, where over 100 cases were reported but it has come down to 57 districts now, where over 100 cases are being reported in the country.”

“The number of cases decreased by 222 districts. Case trajectory is seen in the limited area. There are 18 districts incl 10 districts of Kerala where an increasing trend in cases is seen. These 18 districts constitute 47.5 per cent cases,” he added.

“There are few states where over 3 crore vaccination doses have been supplied. UP has been given 4.88 crore doses, Maharashtra has been given 4.5 crore doses and Gujarat has been given 3.4 crore doses,” he added further. (ANI)

No Bail For Gehana Vasisth In Pornography Case

A Mumbai sessions court on Tuesday refused to grant interim protection from arrest to actor Gehana Vasisth in connection with pornography racket case.

The Court has kept the matter on Friday for further hearing and asked the police to file their reply on Vasisth’s anticipatory bail plea.
On July 29, a case registered at Malvani Police Station, against Vasisth and three producers of the company of businessman and actor Shilpa Shetty’s husband Raj Kundra was handed over to the Property Cell of Mumbai Police Crime Branch.

Gehana Vashisht alias Vandana Tiwari, who is currently released on bail, was earlier arrested in February 2021 in another pornography case. She got bail after four months.

Meanwhile, investigating the porn film case, Mumbai Police Crime Branch has found a hidden cupboard in actor Shilpa Shetty’s husband and businessman Raj Kundra’s Viaan and JL Stream office in Mumbai’s Andheri during searches.

According to officials, forensic auditors have been appointed to probe the transactions in all the accounts of the people involved in the case.

The officials had also mentioned that actor Sherlyn Chopra has been called to provide a statement as a witness in the case.

As per sources, Raj Kundra will soon face money laundering and Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) cases against him as Enforcement Directorate (ED) is likely to register cases under these Acts against him.

Kundra, 45, was arrested by the Mumbai Police late on July 19 along with 11 other people on charges related to the alleged creation of pornographic films and was placed in police custody till July 23.

Currently, the case involves the alleged creation of pornographic films and publishing them through some apps.

Kundra has been named as the key conspirator by the Mumbai Police which has slapped charges against him under Sections 420 (cheating), 34 (common intention), 292 and 293 (related to obscene and indecent advertisements and displays) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) besides relevant sections of the IT Act and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act. Neha Bhasin Vows To Leave Mark On Bigg Boss

By Sandip Kumar Singh

‘Laung Gawacha’ singer Neha Bhasin has been making headlines since she has confirmed that she will be participating in the upcoming Bigg Boss OTT show.

Expressing her excitement for the same, the songstress shared what led her to participate in one of the most sensational shows in India.

In a conversation with ANI on Tuesday, Neha shared that “for many years they (makers of Bigg Boss) were approaching me to participate, we had multiple meetings, I pondered for quite some time, discussed it with my family and finally participating in it.”

The 38-year-old singer also shared that her mother was against her joining the show as there is always a “risk factor for public image” and that the show is all about “exposing yourself to the world”, but on what led her to join the show, the songstress shared it the immense popularity of the show.

“I have understood that there is a huge fan following of Bigg Boss, it’s a huge platform and everyone in the country connects to it… and all those who go to Bigg boss and come out, have had positive changes only in their lives,” Neha told ANI.

She added, “Therefore I too wish that my career, which by the grace of God is already good, gets even better. My fans would be able to see me and become happier and those who aren’t my fans or haven’t been able to become my fan yet, with them too I would be able to establish a connection.”

Neha, who has crooned songs like, ‘Jag Ghoomeya’ (female version), ‘Chashni’ reprise version, ‘Heeriye’ (female version’, ‘Swag se Swaagat’ (female version)- all of Salman Khan film’s hit songs shared that she wasn’t disappointed with the fact that the superstar won’t host for the OTT Voot episodes of the show this time, instead “I was rather impressed that it was gonna be so huge this time that OTT platform would be used and Karan Johar would host it, that’s what I thought.”

Joking and referring to the show as a “dangerous show”, Neha shared what would be the challenges she thinks ought to be there for her.

“Everyone wants to take a break from their real lives, our actual professions, mine is music and so, therefore, parting from music, obviously after being such a renowned singer, exposing oneself out there with such rawness on TV or OTT 24X7, so naturally any person would be afraid of this idea. (laughs),” she said.

She added, “I think it is important to be ‘conscientious’ and not ‘conscious’. We should be conscientious of the fact that we are being watched 24×7 and we should not misbehave beyond a certain point.”

The singer further shared what makes her a unique contestant on the show. “I am complete masala(drama) myself. In fact, my brother calls me ‘garam masala’. I am a very energetic person, and very fun-loving too. There is not a dull moment with me- at least that’s what my family members and friends say. Hopefully what I am, is what you’ll get to see on TV.”

On bringing the trophy home, the songstress said, she will try her best for the same, but if not she “would most definitely try to leave a mark on people’s hearts.”

For the unversed, Karan was recently roped in to host the digital episodes of the upcoming season of ‘Bigg Boss’ on Voot. For the unversed, earlier this month, the makers of the popular reality TV show announced that ‘Bigg Boss 15’ will be launched on OTT ahead of its television premiere.

Karan has not replaced Salman. Reportedly, he will host a few episodes on Voot, and then ‘Dabangg’ star will return to host the televised version of the new season.

‘Bigg Boss OTT’ will premiere on August 8 on Voot. (ANI)
