12 US Troops Killed 15 Hurt In Kabul Airport Blast

US Central Command, Marine Corps General Kenneth F McKenzie Jr on Thursday (local time) said that an Islamic State terrorist attack at the Kabul airport killed 12 US troops and injured 15 more.

“Twelve US servicemen were killed and 15 injured in the attacks in Kabul. Despite this attack, we’re continuing the mission of evacuation,” Kenneth F McKenzie Jr, chief of US Central Command said.
The officer also said that after the explosion at the Abbey Gate of the airport, gunmen opened fire. He attributed the attack to the Islamic State, which claimed responsibility Thursday, and indicated that US military action in response is possible, according to Washington Post.

However, the explosions outside Kabul airport claiming over 60 lives were carried out by the US forces to destroy their belongings, claimed the Taliban who seized control over Afghanistan in mid-August.

“Several explosions were heard in Kabul in the evening. The blasts were carried out by US forces inside Kabul airport to destroy their belongings. Kabul residents are not worried,” Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said in a tweet.

At least seven explosions were heard in Kabul city, hours after the twin suicide bombings outside the airport, that killed over 60 people, including US troops.

“A huge & shocking explosion, waves shake #Kabul 6th explosion. And another 7the explosion while I’m writing this. Two explosions,” an Afghanistan media outlet reported.

Four US Marines are among the 35 people who were reportedly killed in twin bomb blasts outside Kabul airport on Thursday. The first blast was reported at the Abbey Gate in Kabul airport while the second one was near the Baron Hotel.

Pentagon press secretary John Kirby confirmed the development saying that “a number of US service members” were killed in today’s complex attack at Kabul airport.

The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the terror attack near Hamid Karzai International Airport and expressed his support for the victims of the blast. (ANI)

24 Indian, 11 Nepalese Evacuees From Kabul Land At Hindon Base

Indian Air Force aircraft C-17 Globemaster, carrying 24 Indian and 11 Nepalese evacuees from Kabul landed at Hindon Airport on Thursday, under Operation Devi Shakti.

“Indian Embassy and Indian Government rescued us and brought us here to Delhi. We are very thankful to them,” said Shiva, a Nepali national among the people who were evacuated from Afghanistan and brought to India.

Earlier today, Ministry of External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi had informed about the evacuation flight via Twitter. “Op Devi Shakti in action!@IAF_MCC flight with 24 Indian and 11 Nepalese evacuees from Kabul is on its way to Delhi. #DeviShakti,” Bagchi tweeted.

The evacuation operation that came against the backdrop of the Taliban’s takeover of the country last week is known as “Operation Devi Shakti”. This operation comes as MEA had urged all Indian nationals in Afghanistan requiring assistance to contact Special Afghanistan Cell immediately to move out of the war-torn country.

As many as 565 people, including 112 Afghan nationals, have been evacuated by India from Afghanistan since the Taliban seized control of the war-torn country, the Ministry of External Affairs informed the floor leaders of political parties in Parliament on Thursday.

According to sources, the ministry shared details on the recent developments in Afghanistan with floor leaders of various political parties in Parliament. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar briefed the leaders.

Among the 565 evacuees, 175 were embassy personnel, 263 other Indian nationals, 112 were Afghan nationals including Hindus and Sikhs and 15 were third-country nationals, sources said.

Afghanistan’s situation is worsening as people are in rush to leave the nation after the Taliban seized control last week. On August 15, the country’s government fell, soon after President Ashraf Ghani left the nation. (ANI)

11 Dead In 2 Kabul Blasts, One Near Hotel Housing Americans

In two separate explosions that struck Kabul on Thursday — one suicide attack outside airport and another near a hotel where US citizens were gathering to be evacuated, 11 people were believed to be dead in the capital city which has been witnessing largescale evacuation of foreign and Afghan national over last few weeks.

The suicide bombing earlier in the day near the gates of the Kabul airport also injured several including three US troops.

Soon after the first explosion at Kabul airport, France Ambassador to Afghanistan had warned of a second possible explosion at the airport.

“To all our Afghan friends: If you are near the airport gates, getaway urgently and take shelter. A second explosion is possible,” tweeted French envoy David Martinon.

Earlier, Pentagon had confirmed reports of the first explosion outside from outside of the Hamid Karzai International Airport on Thursday.

“We can confirm an explosion outside Kabul airport. Casualties are unclear at this time. We will provide additional details when we can,” said John Kirby, Assistant to the US Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs.

According to a local reporter, a suicide attacker blew himself up in the middle of a large crowd and another attacker started shooting. “AFG Explosion took place outside of the eastern gate of airport and gunfire is underway. There are casualties and fatalities, multiple eyewitnesses tells me,” Afghan reporter Bilal Sarwary tweeted.

In recent days, Kabul airport has been witnessing chaotic scenes as people are reaching the airport in hurry to escape from the Taliban-controlled Afghanistan. (ANI)

Capt To Lead Punjab Assembly; Rawat To Brief Sonia On Sidhu Camp Grievances

After the top leadership of the Congress party has made it clear that Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amrinder Singh will be leading the party in the upcoming state Assembly polls, the party’s in charge of the Punjab unit Harish Rawat will be meeting Congress chief Sonia Gandhi on Thursday to brief the grievances of the ‘Sidhu camp’.

Punjab is scheduled to go to the polls early next year and AICC in charge of the state Harish Rawat has made it amply clear that the party will contest the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections under the leadership of Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh.
According to the sources, a message has been conveyed to Captain that Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi wants that party must remain in power in Punjab and Amarinder Singh should focus on it.

But the situation is still tense as resentment is high in a large section of the leaders in Punjab’s Congress.

This is because, after the recent announcement of Amarinder Singh given the charge to lead the party in the upcoming state Assembly elections, a delegation of seven leaders, including four ministers and three MLAs from Sidhu’s group met Rawat in Dehradun on Wednesday.

Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee general secretary Pargat Singh on Wednesday said, “there is growing resentment in MLAs against Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh.”

Briefing media persons, Singh said, “Due to the non-settlement of issues, there is resentment in MLAs. I suggest the Congress high command under the supervision of AICC observer, the chief minister should call a meeting of all MLAs and decide after discussing with them.”

Rawat, on Wednesday, met the delegation of the ‘Sidhu group’ of the Congress’ Punjab unit.

“Four ministers and three MLAs met me. They expressed their concerns and said that they are concerned about the chances of the party’s victory in the state. They said they are not against anyone, they want to go to the polls with a clear roadmap so that we can win,” Rawat told reporters after the meeting with the delegation earlier.

“There is no threat to the party or government and ministers who met me conveyed that they want to go to the polls with a clear roadmap for victory.”

He also said they had some grievances about the functioning of the state and district administrations.

“If a Congress MLA considers himself insecure then it’s a matter of concern,” he said.

The war front is visible in the state among the factions now, however, Harish Rawat has once again tried to douse down the flames. (ANI)

Jaishankar about China LAC

We Have Strong National Position On Afg: Jaishankar

Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar on Thursday said that all political parties including the government have a “strong national position” on developments concerning Afghanistan and the Centre has approached this current situation in the “spirit of national unity”.

Addressing media after an all-party meeting on Afghanistan, the minister said, “The message which we all want to give you, all the political parties including the government is that on this matter, we all have a similar view. We have a strong national position on Afghanistan. The friendship with the Afghan people is something that matters to all of us. So we approached this situation in the spirit of national unity.”
Jaishankar informed the media that most of the issues and concerns during the meet were on the issue of evacuation from the war-ravaged country. “Under Operation ‘Devi Shakti’ we have done six evacuation flights. We have brought back most of the Indians but not all of them as some of them couldn’t make it for the flight yesterday,” he added.

As many as 565 people, including 112 Afghan nationals, have been evacuated by India from Afghanistan since the Taliban seized control of the war-torn country, the MEA informed the floor leaders of political parties in Parliament on Thursday.

According to sources, the ministry shared details on the recent developments in Afghanistan with floor leaders of various political parties in Parliament.

While speaking to the media, EAM Jaishankar today said the government is very strongly committed to ensuring full evacuation as soon as possible. The meeting went on for three and half hours and 37 leaders from 31 parties participated. “Everybody spoke on the issue, I responded to everyone individually. We all had similar views,” Jaishankar added.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had asked the MEA to brief floor leaders of all political parties on the recent developments in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan plunged into crisis after the Taliban entered the presidential palace in the Afghan capital on August 15 and declared its victory over the government after months of violence across the country.

India, on August 17, had also announced that it would issue an emergency e-visa to Afghan nationals who want to come to the country in view of the prevailing situation in Afghanistan after the Taliban captured power there.

Later, PM Modi had chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) and instructed all concerned officials to undertake all necessary measures to ensure the safe evacuation of Indian nationals from Afghanistan in the coming days. (ANI)

Going Gaga Over Sole Gold

I wanted an escape from my life; from the electricity shortages, to the mosquitoes buzzing in our ear when we slept, from barely having two square meals, to seeing our home getting flooded when it rained… My parents tried their best, but there was only so much they could do — Papa was a cart-puller and Ma worked as a maid
Rani Rampal, Captain, Indian Women’s Hockey Team

Let us not even look at the medal tally of the other countries, including the stupendous achievements of our ‘oriental neighbour’, China, now flexing its muscles so brazenly for a long time in Ladakh. For just about the time needed for ‘instant gratification’ amidst the isolating phobia of a deathly pandemic, with thousands of people still mourning the loss of their loved ones, India exploded at the gold medal won by Neeraj Chopra, the son of a farmer in Haryana and a ‘Subedar’ in the Indian army. The media went gaga. It was once again like that old Rafi song: ‘Japan, Love in Tokyo’!

Achche din’ were finally here. The ‘javelin gold’ seemed sweeter. It was cool, and cacophonic, this collective catharsis! After all, it was the first athletics gold ‘the Vishwaguru’ has won in the entire history of Olympics!

Indeed, it was an ecstatic moment for an eternally ‘frustrated nation’ starved of great ecstasies, great victories, great success and great landmarks at the international level, while stuck with the pathetic long-playing record of the fake glory of a mythical past, and the equally fake illusion that ‘India is a super power’. It’s a rat-trap, this patriotic chest-thumping, with no solid substance or evidence to show. And it arrives with a sorry taste in the mouth, this anti-catharsis of an unrequited dream sequence of a nation-state in bad faith.

When Abhinav Bindra got the gold in shooting, perhaps completely driven by his own drive and dedication, and with basically little or no backing from the Indian government or sports establishment, it was almost an action-replay of the same scenario. An entire nation rejoiced; it was back to lala… land.

And that is how this fantasy unfolds like a once-upon-a-time fairy tale with that once-in-a-blue-moon happy ending. While it’s the same old sad story yet again, repeated a million times, across the tough and tragic terrain of invisible India, where thousands of talented, dedicated, idealistic and brilliant young girls and boys, are decisively left to their fate.

This is part of a predictable pattern. This rags-to-riches story, with a rare finale! Compulsively looking for a happy ending, it seems India has become a sucker for this fantasy, as and when it arrives. We shall wait for a shining star to emerge from the dingy margins — who will suddenly turn India luminescent. Then we shall burst many more patriotic crackers! After that it be will be back to square one.

For one, let us talk of Vandana Katariya, the first Indian woman hockey player to score a hat trick in the Olympics. Her Dalit family faced a barrage of the choicest casteist abuses in her village Roshnabad in Haridwar by upper caste goons condemning her for India losing to Argentina in the semi finals in a hard-fought game. No Dalit should be allowed inside any sports team of India, they shouted, dancing and bursting crackers. By any social indication, undoubtedly, these two evil and vile men are not alone in holding such views.

Let us also talk of Rani Rampal, the captain of the Indian women’s hockey team. Rani came from a terribly poor family. As a kid, she played with a broken hockey stick because she loved the game. The coaching academy in Shahabad, Haryana, had no space for her raw talent or her mad dreams.

Finally, when she was accepted due to her sheer tenacity and persistence, like the other children, she too was asked to fetch 500ml of milk every day. “My family could only afford milk worth 200 ml. Without telling anyone, I would mix the milk with water and drink it because I wanted to play,” she has said. She had no sports gear to show: shoes, dress, diet, hockey stick. Rani remembers her childhood with its meticulous details. Anyway, who can ever forget a childhood lived in such difficult conditions!

She joined the Indian team at the age of 14 in 2008, an extraordinary feat and culmination of sheer hard work, amazing motivation, and extraordinary talent. In 2017, Rani bought her family a ‘home’ – it was a promise she had kept. “I finally fulfilled the promise I made to my family and bought them a home. We cried together and held each other tightly,” she said.

Briefly, this brilliant hockey player has scored 117 goals for India, earned as many as 241 international caps, and was part of the team which went to Rio – the first time the Indian women’s hockey team qualified for the Olympics in 36 years. Indeed, the caption scored the goal that clinched India’s berth for the Olympics in Tokyo — in the final qualification match against the United States in Bhubaneswar.

This incredible story of success against all odds went viral as her team outclassed other teams in Tokyo; this will continue to float until the next rags-to-success fairy tale arrives from the remote, unknown interiors of Manipur, Assam, Jharkhand, Western UP or Haryana.

In the same vein, shall we also talk of Dutee Chand, Deepa Karmakar, Hima Das, among others, from across the most deprived, difficult and hard life stories ever lived in a starkly unequal India, where they chased their sporting dreams against all odds in the most primitive, impossible and pathetic conditions?

A country of winners is clear-headed. It chooses to nourish, sustain and celebrate talent across the social and economic spectrum since day one. This is a synthesis of skills and praxis at Ground Zero. The State and society becomes the mentor where talented children and teenagers are given the space to learn, grow and spread their wings. This is called a great sporting culture and this is not based on the theory of bursting crackers and dancing one day with laddoos, going gaga all over in a patriotic outburst, and then getting back to the usual rut, waiting for the next solo by another javelin gold medalist.

This is what China did much before it hosted the Olympics in 2008 – this reporter witnessed a great sports revolution emerging across its villages, schools and campuses, with every Chinese child wanting to become an Olympic gold medalist. That is how they beat the Americans in 2008 in terms of gold medals, and almost did that again in Tokyo.

This is the disciplined and dedicated sporting culture built by a world champion like Pullela Gopichand in India, along with his family, who would get up in the dark to coach raw and unknown youngsters. It is Gopichand’s Badminton Academy in Hyderabad which has trained Indian women players to achieve the impossible – break the stronghold of Chinese women badminton champions. Let us not forget that PV Sindhu, who won a bronze in Rio and Tokyo, was originally trained in his academy, among scores of great talent.

Indeed, for a nation which is solely obsessed with a cash-rich IPL and billionaire cricketers, and the clichéd catharsis of fours and sixes and ‘death-overs’, the great Olympics will always remain an unlearnt lesson. India must learn to respect even those who don’t have a medal to show – will they too be left to their unhappy destinies like scores of others? It’s time to realise that often the line between victory and defeat is extremely thin.

The fact is, as long as it does not cherish and nourish the likes of Rani Rampal, Deepa Karmakar, Dutee Chand, Vandana Katariya and Hima Das, among thousands of others at the margins chasing an impossible rainbow, this nation of six billion will continue to be ‘a nation of losers’ – going gaga over a lone gold.
