Muslims Under Yogi Adityanath Rule

‘Muslims In UP Are Ill At Ease With Yogi At The Helm’

Mohammad Afsar Saifi, 29, a welding and fabricating business owner at Pilakhuwa (Hapur, Uttar Pradesh) says there is palpable uneasiness among Muslims under Yogi Adityanath rule

There was an uneasy calm when we first heard in March 2017 that the BJP has chosen Mahant Yogi Adityanath to be the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh. He had made fiery speeches in the past and hence the minority community was generally apprehensive.

In the last four and a half years of his rule, the same sense of fear, uneasiness and the risk of a communal flare up has constantly been there, even though there has never been any untoward incident in my locality. I feel it is his duty as the chief minister to work towards allaying this fear.

I am a fabricator. My earnings have improved over the last four years, despite a breakdown of business during Covid-19 lockdown for several months. But financial wellbeing has not lessened out anxiety about our safety. As elections are drawing near, members of my extended family and community are afraid of what will happen if Yogi is re-elected as the state chief minister.

I personally don’t think much about it as I am the one who goes out and face the world to earn bread for my family and so far I have not faced any single case of discrimination which my community people have been thinking.

Yet, my family members cannot vote for him as the perception still reigns among our minds that he is a Hindu hardliner. Largely, this idea is being used as a political tool also in both the communities. Polarisation of votes on communal lines suit all politicians. Yogi’s detractor will naturally fuel our fear factor to gain Muslim support and organize votes against him.

Many people talk about an improvement in the crime situation under his rule and that the mafia lords have been tamed. But, frankly, to someone like me who is from an economically weaker section, I cannot feel any difference as far as the law and order is concerned.

There are certain apprehensions which are still in our mind about the image of the chief minister. Apart from whatever happened during CAA-NRC protest and other isolated incidents, we feel there is a lack of inclusiveness as our community is largely missing from the policy brought in by the Yogi government. Sometimes we feel left out, but at the same time, we think that we have spent last 4.5 years in the same apprehension when nothing untoward actually happened.

Global Economy Recovering From Covid: RBI Governor

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das said on Wednesday the world is witnessing initial signs of recovery from the impact of coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

The pandemic caused structural changes in global economy and impacted the poor more. “Covid-19 is a watershed event in our era. It has caused widespread devastation of lives and livelihoods. There are very few parallels to this shock,” he said.

Das was speaking at 48th convention of the All India Management Association (AIMA) here. The session was titled ‘Beyond Recovery: New Rules of the Game.’

“The pandemic is likely to leave indelible marks on the world economy,” said Das adding that the pandemic has affected the poor and the vulnerable more.

In India too, he said, Covid-19 has impacted many dynamic sectors of the economy and propelled them to opt for greater adoption of new digital technologies.

“The Covid pandemic has provided a new impetus to technology-driven companies such as fintech, edtech and healthtech which are likely to see increased funding activity in the coming years,” said Das.

At the same time, the Indian financial system has transformed rapidly to support the needs of economy,” he said adding that recovery has been uneven among different sectors.

He said the Production linked incentive (PLI) scheme is an important initiative to boost manufacturing sector. “It is necessary that sectors and companies which benefit from the PLI utilise this opportunity to further improve efficiency.”

Das said the global recovery has been uneven across countries and sectors. Advanced economies have normalised faster on back of a higher pace of vaccination and larger policy support.

Emerging and developing economies are lagging due to slow access to vaccines and binding constraints on policy support, he said.

On the whole, said Das, while the pandemic has created enormous challenges, it can also act as an inflection point to alter the course of development. Enhanced adoption of technology will give impetus to productivity, growth and income. (ANI)

Turkey’s Erdogan Rakes Up Kashmir At UNGA

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan once again raked up the issue of Kashmir at UN General Assembly (UNGA).

“We maintain our stance in favour of solving the ongoing problem in Kashmir for 74 years, through dialogue between the parties and within the framework of relevant United Nations resolutions,” Erdogan said on Tuesday.

The 76th UNGA opened on September 14 and the high-level week will start on September 21 and will last until the 27th.

The Turkish President, a close ally of Pakistan, had repeatedly raised the issue of Kashmir in his address to the high-level General Debate.

There is no right of reply (ROR) for heads of state remarks, so no action can be taken by India within the UN framework.

In his address on Tuesday, the Turkish President also referred to China’s minority Muslim Uyghurs in Xinjiang and Myanmar’s Rohingya.

Erdogan said that “within China’s territorial integrity perspective, we do believe that more efforts need to be displayed regarding the protection of the basic rights of the Muslim Uyghur Turks.”

The US and the European Union besides many other countries have accused China of committing genocide against the Uyghurs in resource-rich Xinjiang and called for an international probe by human rights groups. (ANI)

Pandemic Caused Mental Trauma To Children

Witnessing his 86-year-old grandmother slip into coma last year was the toughest moment for 17-year-old Anwesh Dash. There was panic and anxiety due to fears of a possible covid infection. The surge kept his family on toes. “There were times when even the elders would breakdown,” Anwesh told CRY (Child Rights and You) an Indian NGO.

A similar story is that of 16-year-old Manas Jain who felt like a part of him was taken away when his grandfather was taken to a hospital. He hated getting updates via his mother and depended on video calls to talk to him directly. He missed him.

These are the stories of two of the many children who had a hard time over the last two Covid-19 waves in India. Anupama Muhuri, general manager, volunteer action at CRY said: “Children are making heart-breaking choices every day.”

She said, “Things which their childhood deserves have completely gone for a toss. There might be disdain for not meeting their grandparents, or pain of seeing their parents lose jobs, or the constant fear that they might lose someone.”

She said that when people talk of COVID, they see things in an adult way – number of deaths, hospitalizations and so on. But people often miss that children are going through and seeing this extent of grief and loss that the pandemic has brought upon for the first time too.

“But, they don’t have the words like adults to express themselves,” said Trina Chakrabarti, Director (East) & Volunteer Action at CRY.

The organisation has come up with Click Rights Initiative which aims to provide an avenue for children to express themselves, in their own way, by capturing their experiences with a camera.

Trina said that the entire child rights fraternity is trying to understand what is going on with children but they are all speaking on their behalf. With this initiative, CRY wanted to look at what children are saying directly. “It’s not on behalf of, but exactly what children are going through.”

With another wave predicted in October, Anupama’s message to parents is to pay attention to children: “Think of how best we can try to give the experience of feeling cared for and safe because this is a time they will remember for a long time. Even if you don’t have all the answers, sit and spend time with them. They will remember how you responded as an adult.”

Trina said, “If a child is missing school, that will someday regularise. But the kind of emotions that a child is experiencing in these times, that will have a lifelong impact, especially if they have no avenues to express those emotions.”

Taliban Denies Torturing Civilians In Panjshir Valley

Taliban on Monday denied allegations that the group is detaining and torturing civilians in Panjshir Valley and reiterated that the northern province is secure.

This comes as the Afghan resistance front alleged that the Taliban is arresting civilians and torturing them in a prison in Kapisa province, Tolo News reported.
Kabul fell to the Taliban on August 15, when internationally recognised former Afghan president Ashraf Ghani left the country and his government collapsed.

The seizure of power has forced thousands of Afghans to flee for fear of reprisals from the outfit.

UN Human Rights chief Michelle Bachelet last week expressed her concerns about reports of civilian casualties and human rights violations in Afghanistan’s Panjshir province.

“I am worried about reports of civilian casualties and human rights violations as an outcome of the war in Panjshir and also am worried about the increasing hardship of living conditions there,” Bachelet was quoted as saying by Tolo News.

In videos sent to the media, resistance front members claimed to have maintained a presence in Panjshir province. The videos depicted occasional conflicts between the two sides.

Saleh Mohammad Registani: “They are searching houses, arresting innocent people, carrying them to a prison in Kapisa. They kill innocent people and do not allow their relatives to bury the bodies.”

In the meantime, several Panjshir residents claimed that the Taliban is using civilian houses as fighting positions.

Asadullah Wahdat, a Panjshir resident, said: “We ask the Islamic Emirate forces to evacuate residential areas and go where there are military forces of the former government.”

Safora Amiri, another Panjshir resident, said: “The areas are full of military forces. The Taliban are using people’s houses, this has caused civilians to evacuate their homes.”

Highlighting the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Panjshir Valley, former Afghanistan Vice President Amrullah Saleh early this month had called on the UN to do its utmost to prevent the Taliban’s onslaught into the resistance stronghold.

Raising an alarm over the situation in Panjshir, Saleh in a letter to the UN had said a large-scale humanitarian crisis is occurring across Panjshir province and three Andrabs districts in Baghlan province due to the economic blockade and telecommunication blackout by the Taliban. (ANI)

Pak Cleric Held For Luring Boy Into Sex For 3 Years

A Pakistani cleric and former Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) leader Mufti Azizur Rehman lured his student and committed sexual acts with him for three years with promises of helping him in passing exams, a police investigation revealed on Monday.

The findings were included in the challan (investigation report), submitted by the police to the court on Friday after completing their investigation. Dawn reported citing a challan. Lahore Police had registered a case against the cleric after a video of him sexually assaulting one of his students went viral.

The case against JUI-F’s Rehman was registered under Section 377 (unnatural offences) and Section 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

He said that during the exams, Mufti Rehman had accused him and another student of cheating by getting someone else to sit for the exams. “Over this, I was also banned from giving exams at the Wafaqul Madaris for three years,” the investigation report quoted him as saying.

According to the challan, Mufti Rehman then persuaded the complainant to engage in “immoral activities” with him, luring him with hopes of help in passing his exams.

“But despite a passage of three years, during which I was assaulted every Friday, he did nothing and started to blackmail me more,” the student is quoted as saying in the challan.

The challan added that the other suspects in the case — Mufti Rehman’s three sons — were also “found to be responsible” for warning the student of dire consequences and issuing life threats.

“The trial should be conducted after summoning the suspects and witnesses,” the challan requested.

It identified nine individuals who would appear as witnesses in the trial. (ANI)
