Poster Boys Of India’s Space Quest

Did Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first prime minister, secretly approve making of the nuclear bomb? Was his closest confidante on that mission, Homi Jehangir Bhabha, killed in a ‘staged’ air-crash by the United States’ Central Intelligence Agency (CIA)?

These issues raised, or recalled, in a new web series, Rocket Boys, have not set the Jamuna on fire. But dwelling on independent India’s early strides in the field of science under Nehru, when Nehru-bashing has acquired new and powerful dimensions of the art of political skullduggery, is a brave act.

For the same reason, to recall that Cold War-era ‘conspiracy’ of 1966 in the year 2022, when India and the US are getting closer than ever before, is an equally brave act. And the bomb, by itself, is forever an explosive subject.

But the cumulative impact of these acts is greatly softened because they are performed in a web series on an OTT (over the top) platform. They are seen in a new century by people who have only heard or read of Nehru, and are now witnessing his systematic demonization. And to them, what the CIA did, or did not do, in that era of Nehruvian “non-alignment”, may be no different from poor man’s James Bond’s exploits on the cinema screen.

Author-editor Raj Chengappa, who researched for his book on India’s nuclear weapons history says records of that era show that if bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki shocked Nehru, failure to prevent the Big Powers to end the nuclear weapons’ race and then, the Chinese quest for the bomb, contrary to popular perceptions, also alerted him into giving the green signal. He died soon after.

Speaking to those who worked with Nehru — Indira Gandhi, biographer S Gopal, advisor P N Haksar, Ashok Parthasarathi, politicians, scientists, diplomats and armed forces personnel – Chengappa concludes that “Nehru proved to be both an idealist and a pragmatist. While he was dead against the bomb, he believed that when India called for a nuclear-free world, it must do so from a position of strength.”

Bhabha, who called Nehru ‘Bhai’, pioneered the atomic energy mission, and greatly influenced him on the bomb. He was killed when his Air India Boeing ‘Kashmir Princess’, flying over Swiss Alps, crashed. It was shown to the world as “an unfortunate accident”. Conspiracy theories abounded then. The pilot who survived the crash believed the crash was engineered. But an India surviving on American PL 480 free food, did not react.

Rocket Boys director Abhay Pannu cites former CIA operative Robert Crowley’s book that carries a ‘confession’ buttressing a ‘conspiracy’. Tomes have been written, mainly in the West, on espionage and international affairs. Circumstances, yes, and the prevailing cold war compulsions, certainly point to it. But whether they add up to firm evidence remains in doubt.

This is true of most ‘conspiracies’. The world knows of Mossadeq (Iran) and of Patrice Lumumba (Congo). No conclusive evidence has emerged whether Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s 1975 assassination was a CIA operation. The alleged role of Philip Cherry, then the CIA Chief in Dhaka, and his denial, leave the matter there.

This was supposedly American response to the breakup of Pakistan that it could not prevent. A sneering Henry Kissinger comment calling Mujib “history’s favourite fool” may sound triumphant, but proves nothing.

Reflective of the mood in that era and conscious of suspicion and hostility with which India was treated, Indira Gandhi did what she did on Bangladesh, defying them all. She supported the South Africans against their apartheid regime. She hosted Fidel Castro and Ho Chi Minh and Chile’s Hortensia Allende after her husband, President Salvadore Allende, was killed in what was acknowledged as a CIA-sponsored coup.

Two things remain undisputed. One: India turned to the then Soviets Union because it helped, when the British did not, and the US and Western Europe preferred ally Pakistan.

Two: By the end of the last century, unwilling to, or unable to, influence the big-power rivalry, even the much-bombed Vietnam went into a forgive-and-forget mode. As the cold war takes new avatar, new hot-spots keep cropping up – Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Ukraine….

All this needs balancing. Along with the CIA, Rocket Boys also goes for a tactical ‘balancer’. It alludes that under Nehru, the prime minister’s office (PMO) was ‘infiltrated’ by the Russian KGB as well. That, and some more, may have operated – as they do, anywhere, even today. They get away, till caught. Director Abhay Pannu admits to creating characters and situations, as artistic licence and to boost ‘marketing’.

Full credit to Nikkhil Advani who has created this web of developments that involved, besides Bhabha, his younger buddy and another renowned scientist, Vikram Sarabhai. And since the latter focused on reaching new frontiers in space science, APJ Abdul Kalam, the future President of India.

With Nobel laureate C V Raman shown shaping the early years of the trio, with able support from the House of Tata, never before have so many science pioneers, and their feats and follies, been crowded into a single cinematic space.

Excellent performances by a somewhat better known Jim Sarbh who does Bhabha. Sarabhai is played by emerging OTT actor Ishwak Singh. Sarabhai cannot be complete without Regina Cassandra playing his dancer-wife Mrinalini. Rajit Kapur is Nehru and Arjun Radhakrishna plays Kalam.

All that is made palatable and popular, even populist. As the Bollywood buzzword goes, it is entertainment, entertainment, entertainment – not to be taken too seriously. There are more serious issues to worry about, after all, like the climate change, Covid-19, conflicts that bash and belittle ancient civilizations and faiths, and of course, suffer political discourses that divide.

The pleasant surprise, however, remains. Rocket Boys, gathering critical and popular accolade, pushes science and narrates how its strides created as aspiring India that Nehru wanted to develop a “scientific temper.” Today, India can boast of having the world’s largest science-trained manpower, with a score of CEOs manning multinational giants. But whether that is because of, or despite the lack of, the “scientific temper” needs serious debating.

Cong Hired People To Block Modi’s Route: Shah On Ferozepur Incident

Attacking the ruling Congress ahead of the Punjab Assembly polls, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday referring to the security lapse incident during PM Narendra Modi’s visit to the state last month said that Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi had blocked the PM’s route instead of welcoming him, while Shiromani Akali Dal and Aam Aadmi Party remained silent over it.

Addressing a public rally here, Shah said, “Prime Minister Modi had chosen Ferozepore for election campaigning and his rally was scheduled here. But Congress was scared of his rally, so they hired people in an attempt to stop his rally. You can neither stop us like this nor will people of Punjab like your tactics.”

“When a guest like Narendra Modi comes to Punjab, should he not be welcomed? Instead of welcoming, Punjab Chief Minister blocked his route. Akali Dal and Aam Aadmi Party remained silent. I would like to tell all three of them – how will those who cannot secure the route of Prime Minister, secure Punjab and secure the nation?” stated the Union Home Minister.

Exuding confidence in the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) victory in the upcoming Punjab Assembly polls, Shah said BJP’s lotus will bloom in every household in the state in the next five years.

“Under PM Modi’s leadership, BJP is contesting independently along with its two allies. For years, we contested only on 22 seats. I have come to tell Hindu and Sikh brothers and sisters that it is the beginning. In the next five years, we will bring BJP’s Lotus in every household,” he added.

On January 5, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was stuck atop a flyover for 15-20 minutes while on his way to Ferozepur in Punjab due to the road being blocked by some protesters. The Ministry of Home Affairs had termed it as a “major lapse” in his security.

The polling in Punjab will take place in a single phase on February 20. The votes will be counted on March 10. (ANI)

PM, Abu Dhabi Prince To Hold Virtual Summit On Feb 18

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of UAE Armed Forces, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed al Nahyan will hold a Virtual Summit on February 18, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) informed on Wednesday.

The MEA in a press release said the two leaders will discuss bilateral cooperation and exchange views on regional and international issues of mutual interest.

“Both leaders are expected to lay out their vision of the historic and friendly relations between the two countries, at a time when India is celebrating 75 years of its Independence as Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav and UAE is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its foundation,” the MEA said in a press release.

In recent years, bilateral relations between India and the UAE have strengthened in all areas, and both sides have embarked upon a comprehensive strategic partnership. Prime Minister visited UAE in 2015, 2018, and 2019 while the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi visited India in 2016 and 2017. Ministerial visits between the two sides have also continued, including three visits of External Affairs Minister and a visit of Commerce and Industry Minister to UAE in 2021.

Both sides have collaborated closely during the Covid-19 pandemic in critical areas of healthcare and food security. Bilateral trade, investment, and energy relations have remained robust. The two sides are also strengthening their cooperation in new areas of renewable energy, start-ups, fintech, etc. India is participating with one of the largest pavilions in the Dubai Expo 2020.

Law & Order Has Remarkably Improved in The Yogi Regime

‘You May Differ With His Ideology, But Yogi Has Made UP Safer’

Dr Sangeeta Sharma, 65, Principal of Pandit Sujan Singh Degree College in Meerut (Uttar Pradesh), says law & order has remarkably improved in the Yogi regime

The western Uttar Pradesh, the area where I have been living, is often popularly referred to as the Badlands of the state. There is a saying in several households here: when the Sun goes down, you lie down. This means women and even men are advised not to travel or step outside during late hours as criminals rule the streets after sunset.

However, things have drastically changed in the last five years since Yogi Adityanath took reins of the state as Chief Minister.

Earlier, even daylight crimes chain snatching, petty robberies, eve teasing, molestation in colleges and universities were order of the day. It is not difficult to imagine if this was the situation in urban areas, how things would be in rural pockets. But, as I said, that was before Yogi took charge.

His government apparently placed law and order as its top priority as the state administration, including police, started rebuilding the trust of people with positive steps that were visible, right after he took over. One of the first such step was forming anti-Romeo surveillance squads.

I know that these squad drew widespread criticism from several quarters, but the critics have little idea about the plight of school- and college-going girls. Miscreants on bikes had made commuting to educational institutions a miserable experience. Being a degree college principal, I know what hardships my students were facing. Today, eve teasing and molestations have become extremely rare.

It is heartening to see the police being sensitive to crime against women in Uttar Pradesh. Even the complaints made on a micro-blogging site like Twitter are taken seriously by the UP Police social media cell and promptly pursued. This is a dramatic change, an unprecedented one, and it could not have been possible unless the orders came right from the top.

Sharma says anti-Romeo squads (right) were a necessity in Uttar Pradesh

We had never imagined that such a safe environment would be brought in Meerut and nearby areas in our lifetime. The presence of police has increased, which gives us more confidence. Now we can go out for a walk after dinner fearlessly as police patrol vehicles are scaling the streets throughout the night.

There is another local example to prove my point. There used to a ‘Chor Bazaar’ called Soti Ganj in Meerut and everyone in the district administration knew that stolen cars and bikes were brought in there every day, dismantled and then the spare parts sold in black market.

The market had been in business for as long as we can recall. Yet, little action was ever taken to stem the rot. It was a blot on our city as even people as far as from Delhi-Noida mentioned it as stolen vehicle haven. Mercifully, under the Yogi rule, the infamous trade has been kicked out of the city.

One can have ideological differences with the party that Yogi Adityanath belongs to but his good work has to be appreciated. Of course, there is a long way to go to strengthen the law and order in the state but the sense of safety and security which has been brought about under his rule is praiseworthy. Yogi is taking the state into the right direction.

I hope that others states also follow the same route to make India a safe country for every citizen, and women in particular.

Cong Did Not Merge Kartarpur Sahib Within India’s Territory: Modi

Launching a scathing attack at Nehru-Gandhi dynasty, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday slammed the Congress Government for failing to merge Kartarpur Sahib, the final resting place of Guru Nanak Dev, within India’s territory during partition in 1947, or after wins in subsequent wars.

“Even during the 1965 war, Congress did not bother to take back the land. During the 1971 war, Then the government sitting in Delhi would have returned 90,000 Pakistani soldiers on the condition that it returned the Tapobhumi of Guru Nanak Dev Ji Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara.”

“When the country was partitioned, the people of Congress were there, did they not understand enough that Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Tapobhoomi should be kept in India at a distance of 6 km from the border. Congress people have committed a crime, crushed our sentiments,” he added.

He further said that the BJP gave recognization to this heritage of India all over the world.

“We are a dedicated people, we are also proud of our heritage, the responsibility of development is also in front of us. We celebrate Prakash Parv of Gurus with full faith not only in the country but all over the world. Recognize this heritage of India all over the world,” he added.

The Prime Minister accused Congress of belittling and insulting the sacrifices of the soldiers who died during the 2016 Pathankot attack.

“When Pakistani terrorists attacked this land of Pathankot, the entire country was united but where were Congress party leaders at that time? They questioned the capabilities of our armed forces, they raised doubts, they raised questions on the sacrifices of our martyrs. Even during the anniversary of Pulwama attack, they are again questioning the proofs of our soldiers’ capabilities. Now it’s you who has to decide if can we trust the security of a border state like Punjab in such people’s hands,” Modi said in Pathankot.

He praised Captain Amarinder Singh, saying that he was in Congress earlier and stopped such intentions of the party. “But now, he has also left,” Modi said.

He also attacked dynasty politics. “Wherever we win, we oust remote-control government and appeasement and dynasty politics,” he said. “We will make a new Punjab. BJP will leave no stone unturned. People do not leave our side, once they back us,” he added.

PM Modi promises development and procurement at MSP under ‘Nava Punjab’

“We have made highways in Punjab. The Delhi-Katra expressway crosses through Punjab and it will provide new avenues for development and employment opportunities for the people of Punjab,” he said

“We are creating the Ludhiana-Bengal corridor. We are also working on getting more airports in Punjab. The PGI satellite centres are also being set up. We have also created food parks in Punjab. Record crop procurement on MSP is happening for farmers of Punjab,” the Prime Minister said, adding that the BJP has a vision for ‘Nava Punjab’.

“We shall create a border development authority for developing areas like Pathankot,” he added.

Referring to the Aam Aadmi Party, PM Modi said, “Now Congress has also found a “partner in crime”. For Ram Mandir, both these parties protested and both question the sacrifices of our soldiers.”

“One party has pushed Punjab’s youth into drugs, the other has pushed Delhi into liquor. Now both these parties are doing WWF in Punjab. In Delhi, AAP only could form the government with the Congress’s support. If Congress is original, this other party is its photocopy,” Modi said.

He said that infrastructure will be created in border villages and work will be done for skill development and tourism.

“We have taken a very important decision in this budget. A huge benefit of this is going to be given to the border villages of my Punjab. We have made a provision in the budget that Vibrant Village Scheme will be implemented in the border villages,” he added.

PM Modi said hundreds of Sainik schools will be opened in Punjab and that girls will also be given admission to these schools.

He said that the Centre works on the principles of Sant Ravidas. (ANI)

Kejriwal Slams Channi For Remarks Against People From UP, Bihar

Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal slammed Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi for his purported appeal to the people to stop people from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar from coming to the state. Saying that the statement is “shameful”, Kejriwal claimed that the Punjab Chief Minister calls him a “Kala (black)”.

“The comments are really shameful. We strongly condemn comments aimed at any individual or any particular community. He also calls me ‘Kala’ (black),” said Kejriwal while addressing a press conference in Mohali. Punjab Chief Ministerial candidate Bhagwant Mann was also present at the press conference.

Earlier, during a political rally, Channi had said, “‘Don’t let UP, Bihar ke bhaiya enter Punjab”

Kejriwal announced that the sitting mayor from Amritsar, Karamjit Singh Rintu, had joined AAP and urged people in Amritsar to vote for them so that they could make efforts to make Amritsar a ‘World Icon City’.

“There have been a lot of demands that Amritsar should be made the ‘World Icon City’. Mann and I have talked about this and Rintuji has also been working on this for a long time. We assure you that efforts will be made to ensure that Amritsar is made a ‘World Icon City’,” Kejriwal said.

He assured the businessmen that the party will create a great atmosphere for them to work in Punjab, devoid of any troubles or intimidation from the police.

“Earlier, ‘hissa’ (portion) was charged from the businessmen, but we will give them ‘hissedaari (participation)’,” he added.

Kejriwal remarked that just like his party ended ‘inspector-raj’ and ‘raid-raj’ in Delhi, it will also eliminate ‘parcha-raj’ in Punjab.

“There are a lot of fake parchas on businesmen too. Ransom is collected from them via jo-jo tax and many other things. They are threatened with raids if they do not pay money to officers. We will put an end to all this, old, fake ‘parchas’ against all will be cancelled,” he added.

Mann, the Chief Ministerial candidate in the state, said that once voted to power, the party will take action against an MLA or Minister if they call up people to demand something from them or to threaten them.

Kejriwal said that during its tenure of five years, Congress ruined the atmosphere in the state and alleged that the party was in collusion with the accused in incidents of Bargari sacrilege and bomb blasts in Ludhiana and Maur.

Regarding comments made by the opposition at him during their election campaigns, Kejriwal said, “Rahul Gandhi calls me a terrorist. Channi calls me ‘Kala’ (black) and says my clothes are bad. They will all get to know on February 20 whether I am truly a terrorist or ‘kala’ or my clothes are bad.”

Notably, Punjab will go to the Assembly polls on February 20 and the counting of votes will take place on March 10. (ANI)

Partially Consumed Liquor Bottle Found In Deep Sidhu’s Car

A partially consumed bottle of liquor was recovered from the ill-fated car of Punjabi actor Deep Sidhu, who died in a road accident on Tuesday near Sonipat in Haryana.

An FIR has been registered for rash and negligent driving against the driver of the truck with which the actor’s car collided. Viscera samples of the actor have been collected.

“We retrieved a partially consumed liquor bottle from Deep Sidhu’s car. It is a case of rash and negligent driving. An FIR has been registered. The driver has been identified and police teams are trying to nab him. Viscera sample has been collected and further action will be taken after analysis of FSL report,” said Rahul Sharma, SP, Sonipat.

Police had earlier said that Deep Sidhu’s car crashed into a stationary truck near Pipli toll at the KMP expressway.

Deep Sidhu was out on bail in the Republic Day violence case in January last year.

In February last year, Sidhu was arrested by Delhi Police in connection with the Republic Day violence case in 2021. A tractor rally by farmers on Republic Day had turned violent after protesters came to the Red Fort. The farmers were protesting against three (now repealed) farm laws.

Delhi Police had said in its FIR that Deep Sidhu “instigated the mob not to follow the permitted route of the Kisan parade and breach barricades with tractors” on January 26, 2021.

Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi extended condolences over the death.

“Deeply saddened to learn about the unfortunate demise of renowned actor and social activist Deep Sidhu. My thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved family and fans,” the Chief Minister tweeted. (ANI)
