Goa Votes Tomorrow For 40 Assembly Seats

With campaigning for the 40 Assembly seats Goa concluding on Saturday, the state will go to polls in a single phase on Monday. The incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is being challenged by Congress, Trinamool Congress and Aam Admi Party (AAP) in a multi-cornered electoral contest in Goa.

Goa Assembly has a strength of 40 members out of which the BJP currently has 17 legislators and enjoys the support of legislators from Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP), Vijay Sardesai of the Goa Forward Party (GFP), and three independents. The GFP and MGP each have three MLAs, and Congress, on the other hand, has 15 MLAs in the house.
A total of 301 candidates from different political parties are in the electoral fray in Goa.

The ruling BJP, Congress, Trinamool Congress and Aam Aadmi Party remain principal contenders for the Assembly elections in Goa along with Shiv Sena.

However, Utpal Parrikar, son of former Chief Minister Manohar Parikkar, is also contesting as an independent candidate from his father’s traditional Panaji Assembly seat. He had resigned from the BJP after he was denied a ticket from the Panaji Assembly constituency.

The BJP has fielded Congress party turncoat Atanasio “Babush” Monserrate from the Panaji seat. He had joined the BJP along with nine other MLAs in 2019 from Congress.

The Panaji Assembly seat has its own importance in electoral politics of the state. Former Union Minister for Defence Manohar Parrikar, who had represented Panaji, had been a three term Chief Minister of the state.

Goa witnessed intense electioneering by the top leaders of various political parties.

Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram along with the AICC in-charge Dinesh Gundu Rao canvassed in Goa, seeking votes for works carried out by the Congress led governments in the past, slamming political rivals for hampering welfare of the people in the state.

Goa Pradesh Congress Committee President Girish Chodankar also posted a video message for voters in Goa. He recalled works done by the Congress led government in the past in the state.

Similarly, several candidates of the BJP, Congress and TMC along with other political parties posted video messages, highlighting the developmental works carried out by them in their respective constituencies.

Meanwhile, AAP national convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also promised cash assistance for every woman above the age of 18 years and other benefits for many communities if his party came to power in the state.

Shiv Sena leader Aaditya Thackeray on Saturday highlighted that the model of good governance in Maharashtra should be replicated in all other states.

The AAP has declared lawyer turned politician Amit Palekar as its Chief Ministerial face for the Goa Assembly polls.

The counting of votes in poll-bound Goa will take place on March 10. (ANI)

Pak Students Continue Protest Against Ban On Unions

Students in Pakistan continued their sit-in at Charing Cross on Saturday to protest against the ban on student unions imposed by former president General Ziaul Haq.

Notably, the demonstrations started on Wednesday to mark the 38th anniversary of the ban on student unions. The Progressive Student Collective activists continued their protest as it entered its third day.

The protesters asked all political parties to unanimously pass legislation in parliament to decriminalise student politics. Pakistan Bar Council member Abid Saqi said that Ziaul era banned the student unions to close the door of politics on students.

A number of students have established a camp which has been visited by social and political workers, lawyers, members of the Punjab Assembly, journalists and students from different colleges and universities, reported Dawn.

Further reiterating his concern on the situation Saqi said that the ban had helped the state produce slaves and compliant minds in educational institutions.

“This compliant mind could not raise voice against any injustice and it was the reason to ban student unions in the country and the state had achieved their target during the last 30 years,” he said.

He condemned the right-wing parties and said that these parties thrived in universities. He further criticized them for not providing a conducive atmosphere to students with liberal, secular, and free minds since unions were prohibited, reported the newspaper.

Moreover, he said these students were demanding their constitutional rights and were being labelled as traitors.

“We are not afraid of these people who label them with different names and will continue their struggle,” he said. (ANI)

Shibani Drops Hints Of Wedding With Farhan

The latest social media post from actor-singer Shibani Dandekar seems to have a hint at her upcoming rumoured wedding to Farhan Akhtar.

Shibani took to her Instagram handle on Saturday and shared a picture of her in which she could be seen all snuggled up and sleeping on a couch that seemed to be at an airport’s waiting lounge. In the caption, she wrote, “Exhausted but Excited!”

What apparently discreetly hinted at her upcoming rumoured wedding was cricket presenter Gaurav Kapur’s comment on her post. He wrote, “I am excited to be exhausted next weekend.”

This might have been a hint at Farhan and Shibani’s reported date of marriage, February 21. However, there has been no official confirmation from either of the stars.

Farhan and Shibani have been together for three years now. Farhan was previously married to hairstylist Adhuna, with whom he has two daughters — Shakya and Akira. (ANI)

Assembly Polls: Campaigning Ends In Goa, U’khand

The stage is set for Assembly elections in Goa and Uttarakhand as campaigning in both the states came to an end on Saturday.

Both the states will go to Assembly polls in a single phase on February 14 and the counting of votes will take place on March 10.
Both the states witnessed heated political turbulence as leaders from various political parties pitched in favour of their respective parties to the voters.

In Goa which has 40 Assembly seats, the state’s election observer and senior Congress leader P Chidambaram addressed a press conference along with AICC Incharge Dinesh Gundu Rao. He highlighted the works carried out by the Congress party for the people of the state and slammed the Opposition parties for hampering the welfare of the people in the state.

Goa Pradesh Congress Committee President Girish Chodankar also posted a video message for voters in Goa and lauded the Congress party for their works.

Similarly, a press conference was addressed by BJP National General Secretary and Goa Desk Incharge CT Ravi.

Several candidates of BJP, Congress and Trinamool Congress along with other political parties posted a video message and highlighted the developmental works carried out by them in the constituencies.

Similarly, campaigning came to an end today for the 70 Assembly seats of Uttarakhand going to polls on February 14 with a host of star campaigners, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, holding a series of rallies in support of their party candidates.

Electioneering, which drew to a close at 6 pm in accordance with the Election Commission of India’s (EC) guidelines, was affected for the most part by COVID-19 restrictions, including a ban on physical rallies, forcing the political parties to resort to virtual rallies and scaled-down door-to-door campaigns.

In Uttarakhand, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath’s who hails from Uttarakhand addressed a gathering in Tehri Vidhan Sabha. PM Modi also addressed a huge public meeting in Rudrapur, Uttarakhand today. Union Minister Amit Shah addressed in Raipur Vidhan Sabha as well.

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Saturday alleged that the policies are being made just for two industrialists who are friends of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Addressing the ‘Uttarakhandi Swabhiman’ rally in Khatima, the Congress leader slammed the Central government for making the budget that offers nothing for the poor, farmers, middle class, small and medium businessmen. (ANI)

Rahul Is Modern-Day Jinnah: Assam CM Himanta

Stepping up his attack on Rahul Gandhi, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday said the language of Congress leader is “similar to that of Jinnah before 1947” and he is, “in a way, modern-day Jinnah”.

Sarma’s fresh salvo at Gandhi came a day after he attacked Gandhi at an election rally in Uttarakhand.
Sarma had also attacked Gandhi on Thursday over his tweet in which the Congress leader had described India as “union of states” while attacking the BJP government.

“It seems for him (Rahul Gandhi), India (is) only from Gujarat to West Bengal. I’ve been observing what he has been saying in the last 10 days. Once he said India is a union of states. Another time he says India means from Gujarat to Bengal,” Biswa told reporters here.

“…So, I am saying the ghost of Jinnah has entered into Rahul Gandhi, I said this in Uttrakhand, Rahul Gandhi’s language is similar to that of Jinnah before 1947. In a way, Rahul Gandhi is modern-day Jinnah,” he added.

At an election rally in Uttarakhand on Friday, the BJP leader had alleged that Rahul Gandhi had demanded proof of surgical strikes carried out by the Indian Army against terror launch pads across Line of Control in 2016.

“Look at the mentality of these people. General Bipin Rawat was the pride of the country. India conducted the Surgical Strike in Pakistan under his leadership. Rahul Gandhi demanded proof of the strike. Did we ever ask you for proof of whether you are Rajiv Gandhi’s son or not? What right do you have to demand proof from my Army?” Sarma had said.

“If our Army said that they conducted the strike in Pakistan, that means they have done it. Where is the dispute in this? Do you not trust General Bipin Rawat? If he said that the Army conducted the strike, that means it’s done. Why do you want proof of it? Do not disrespect the soldiers. People die for the country. People do not live for others but for the country,” he added.

On Thursday hours after Rahul Gandhi emphasised on India being a “union” of cultures and states, Sarma hit out at him saying “India is far beyond just a union” and asked what was Congress leader’s problem with “nation, nationality and nationalism”.

He accused the Congress leader of having “tukde-tuke” philosophy and said “Bharat cannot be held hostage to it”.

The BJP leader also took a dig at Gandhi not mentioning the northeast in his tweet and talking of India stretching from Gujarat to West Bengal.

“India is far beyond just a union. We are a proud Nation. Bharat cannot be held hostage to your tukde tukde philosophy. What is your problem with Nation, Nationality and Nationalism.? And hello- beyond Bengal, we North east exist,” Biswa said in a tweet.

In his tweet, Gandhi accused the BJP-led government of “insulting the spirit of India”.

“There is strength in our Union. Our Union of Cultures. Our Union of Diversity. Our Union of Languages. Our Union of People. Our Union of States. From Kashmir to Kerala. From Gujarat to West Bengal. India is beautiful in all its colours. Don’t insult the spirit of India,” Gandhi said. (ANI)

Over ₹10,000 Cr Will Be Given To Farmers In MP: Shivraj

Hitting out at the previous Congress-led government in Madhya Pradesh under Digvijaya Singh, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Saturday said that the Congress destroyed the state and never thought about the farmers.

Announcing that over Rs 10,000 cr will be given to the farmers by BJP, Chouhan said that the party will change the fate of the state’s farmers.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Saturday hit out at the former Chief Minister and Congress leader Digvijaya Singh saying that the Congress and Singh destroyed the state and never thought about the farmers.

Addressing a public meeting here today, Chouhan said, “Congress party and former CM Digvijaya Singh have done the work of destroying Madhya Pradesh. Over Rs 10,000 cr will be given to the farmers by BJP. I ask them (Sonia and Rahul Gandhi), why they never thought about farmers.”

According to CM Chouhan BJP would change the fate of farmers in Madhya Pradesh. “Before making promises to people during elections, the Congress party should think about the work they are doing in their states like Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh. Ukraine, Uncertain Fallouts

From public statements by both the USA and UK, it appears they are keen to see the conflict between Russia and Ukraine blowing into a war. The war will not only cause economic damage to Russia but could also affect its power. On the other hand, Europe, that has quite a lot to lose in this conflict next door, is keen to find diplomatic solutions. Ukraine itself has been playing down the prospect of war, but preparing for one. For India it seems this is a long way off, or is it?

A war is already on. It may not be a physical war, but it is a mental war. It appears that Russia wants to wear down Ukraine, make it nervous, push it towards economic crises, open up divisions and show it that no western country will physically come to its aid. Russia has enough oil and gas to stay where it is for a few more months. Ukraine on the other hand may have problems if pushed into a long blockade. However Russia may also be coordinating its move with China.

Russia has embarked on 10 days of ‘military exercises’ with Belarus. Enough time to prepare a war with its partner as ally. These will end on 20th February. That is also the day the Winter Olympics end in China. It may be coincidence or a strategic alignment of interests and potential actions. Western countries think Russia will avoid waging a war during the Olympics.

It is also evident from the last two decades of conflicts that the United States and its allies at NATO cannot manage two conflicts concurrently. In fact even a single protracted war seems to drain a lot out of them, financially, physically and in their internal unity. It is quite possible that while UK and US are cajoling Putin to play his card, with statements such as no one knows when Putin may act, or making statements that it could be any minute, both Putin and Xi may be considering a multi-regional war on at least two fronts.

There seems to be some coordination of strategy between Russia and China. Both leaders have made statement of solidarity with each other. Both countries are engaged in meetings at several levels including military Chiefs. Clearly there is something on the agenda other than talking Ukraine and NATO. The two are not best of friends, but are united by their common perception of threat from the United States and NATO to their own security interests.

The United States has been overtly threatening China and to Russia. In the Pacific Ocean, it has formed a ring of allies called AUKUS, to form an offensive coalition against China, should the need arise. Currently its focus is to signal to China to keep off Taiwan. On Russia’s western border, the USA has been actively setting up bases in East European countries and has been supporting the Ukraine leadership even before this conflict. Russia suspects that the USA engineered the recent unsuccessful uprising in Belarus.

Meanwhile China is eyeing parts of Kashmir to ensure its Chinese- Pakistan Economic Corridor can safely go through into Pakistan. India has kept away from the Silk Road project and the CPEC, often criticising it. The USA sees the Silk Road project a threat to its financial hegemony.

China sees India as a potential military threat to CPEC and a front line offensive partner for United States in American strategy to contain China. China is thought to have designs on creating a wide enough buffer corridor in Kashmir both for defence and to protect CPEC.

If China’s regional policy is influenced by its economic interest to secure a corridor to the Indian ocean, the Russian Government is driven by vision of a Russian-Slavic civilisation separate from Western European and Anglo Saxon civilisations. It wants to create a Russian-Slav power base, hence its interest in Ukraine.

ALSO READ: Is A European Union Army Feasible?

Russia may indeed wait until after the Olympics to make its substantive move. Increasingly it is becoming obvious that while US and UK are making all sort of threats, they have no intention of sending forces to assist Ukraine. By the 20th February Ukraine may be worn out, shaken and feeling alone against the Russian giant. It may undergo an internal coup or its Government may decide that it is more secure by giving Russia a guarantee that it will accept the terms of Minsk agreement as interpreted by Russia and not join NATO.

However if Russia does attack Ukraine, it is likely to coordinate its attack with China and embark on the invasion when China is ready to move either on Kashmir or Taiwan.

The USA cannot commit forces and resources to Ukraine and concurrently to AUKUS to save Taiwan and at the same time offer support to India to help defend against a Chinese incursion into Kashmir.

NATO and USA may be left standing by as quick and swift moves by both Russia and China change the maps in coordinated moves. Generally it is thought that China may decide to invade Taiwan. However China is more likely to bag Taiwan without a fight in the future. With a key ally in Pakistan and a significant population in Kashmir hostile to the Indian Government, invading Kashmir will be easier and more opportune. The USA support for India is likely amount to megaphone statements and some punitive sanctions.

History has shown as recent as Afghanistan that the USA does not value friendships. It only has time for strategic partners when they benefit its interests. And when the advantage is not there, it also walks away irrespective of the mess left behind.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine is also likely to be a swift one. Experts are warning that Russia will be drawn into a long war and a persistent insurgency if it does take over Ukraine. Parallels are drawn with Afghanistan and Middle East wars. However there is a difference. Both Afghanistan and Iraq were occupations of a culturally different and culturally hostile terrain. Ukraine on the other hand is almost 40% Russian. They are more likely to accept a change of power and move on with their lives.

Hence both a Russian invasion of Ukraine and a Chinese invasion of Kashmir are likely to be short and decisive wars that will change the balance of power to some extent.

Therefore Ukraine as a land mass may appear to be far away for India to worry, but Ukraine as a pawn in the geopolitical games of Big Powers is on the door step.

The current Indian Government doesn’t get along with its neighbours. Internally it has created enough enemies within with its hardline Hindutva project. The country isn’t all that united and cohesive as it might like to think. Annexation of land in Kashmir by China could work in favour of the BJP to bolster nationalist fervour. However it could also work against it, if a deft opposition emerges attacking its confrontationist policies in the region.

India’s defence and international strategist have a lot to think about and a lot to prepare for. The fall out of a war in Ukraine is likely to reach the borders of India. Ukraine is far but also so near.
