SRK, Suriya Did Not Charge Single Penny For Their Cameos In ‘Rocketry’: R Madhavan

Shah Rukh Khan, the king of hearts for many due to his ability to make feel special, has smitten actor R Madhavan too who is completely awed by the superstar’s humility.

While promoting his upcoming film ‘Rocketry: The Nambi Effect’ in New Delhi on Monday, Madhavan revealed that SRK did not charge a single penny for his cameo in the project.
“I mentioned about ‘Rocketry’ to Shah Rukh Khan sahab when I worked with him in ‘Zero’ …he vividly remembered it that during one of his birthday parties he asked me about the film’s status and expressed his desire to be a part of the film. ‘Mujhe background me koi bhi role chalega main is film ka hissa hona chahta hu’, Khan sahab told me. I thought he was joking. Two days later my wife Sarita asked me to thank Khan sahab for his kind words. I dropped a message to Khan sahab’s manager asking her to convey my gratitude to him and I instantly got a text from the manager saying, ‘khan sahab dates puch rhe hai shoot ki’.. and that’s how he became a part of our film,” Madhavan recalled.

Apart from SRK, Suriya also did not charge any fee for his guest role in ‘Rocketry’, which is based on the life of the former rocket scientist at Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Nambi Narayanan, who was falsely accused of espionage and arrested in 1994.

“The two (SRK and Suriya) did not charge a single penny for their work in the film. They did not charge anything for caravans, costumes, and assistants. In fact, Suriya flew out to shoot in Mumbai with his crew on his own money. He did not charge for the flights or for the dialogue writer who translated his lines in Tamil,” Madhavan shared.

Such gestures of SRK and Suriya have increased Madhavan’s respect for the good people in the film industry.

“There are a lot of good people in the industry. I am an outsider and I have met several people in my career who whole-heartedly helped me. Just on my request, Amit ji (Amitabh Bachchan) or Priyanka Chopra post a tweet (to show their support for the film). I am grateful for their love and respect,” Madhavan said.

Madhavan will be seen essaying the role of Nambi Narayanan in the film, which is slated to release on July 1. The movie has been shot in India, France, Canada, Georgia and Serbia, and will be out in six languages worldwide, including Hindi, English, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada. (ANI)

Delhi Police arrested three persons, including two main shooters in the Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala killing case, said officials on Monday.

The police also said that a man named Manpreet Manu first shot at Moose Wala.
“Manpreet Manu riding in this Corolla car fired at Moose Wala. Soon after the incident Manpreet Manu and Roopa left. Priyavrat-led module also left the spot after the incident,” said the chief of anti-terror unit (Delhi special cell), HGS Dhaliwal.

A huge cache of arms including 3 pistols 50 rounds, 8 high explosive grenades and grenade launchers, and 9 electric detonators were recovered by the police.

“All four were travelling in one Bolero car driven by one Kashis. Ankit Sirsa and Deepak, and Priyavrat, the head of this one module of shooters were travelling in the car. There was another car, Corolla, driven by Jagroop Roopa,” said the Delhi Police Special Cell.

The arrests were made in Kutch, Gujarat on June 19.

The accused also planned to use Punjab Police uniforms but could not use them due to lack of initials on the uniform. A total of six uniforms were prepared.

According to information, the accused persons include Priyavrat (26) who was the module head and was in direct touch with Canada-based Goldy Brar and led the team at the time of the incident. Privarat has been previously involved in two murder cases. He was arrested in 2015 in a murder case of Sonipat and wanted in another murder case of Sonipat in 2021.

He was seen in CCTV footage at a petrol pump at Fatehgarh before the murder.

The second arrested has been identified as Kashish (24) who is also a designated shooter and was also identified from the CCTV footage of petrol pump Fatehgarh. He has been a wanted accused in Jhajjhar case, Haryana in 2021.

The third arrested accused Keshav Kumar (29) was a facilitator who received the shooters in a four-wheeler just after the shootout and also accompanied the shooters till Mansa on the day of the incident, during reconnaissance and previous attempts. Kumar was arrested in a murder case at Bathinda, Punjab in 2020 and was also suspected to be involved in various cases of extortion in Punjab.

Canada-based gangster Goldy Brar had claimed responsibility for Moose Wala’s murder in a Facebook post. Goldy Brar is a close aide of gang leader Lawrence Bishnoi, who is the chief suspect in the Punjabi rapper’s murder.

Bishnoi was produced before Chief Judicial Magistrate on June 15, where the Punjab Police got 7 days remand of the wanted criminal.

Sidhu Moose Wala was shot dead by assailants in Jawaharke village of Punjab’s Mansa district on May 29. The incident took place a day after his security was withdrawn by the Punjab police among 424 others. Notably, the singer had joined the Congress party last year in December ahead of the Assembly elections. (ANI)

Cong Leaders Meet Prez Kovind To Discuss Agnipath

As protests against the Centre’s newly-launched Agnipath military recruitment scheme intensified, Congress leaders on Monday met President Ram Nath Kovind to discuss the Agnipath scheme and police atrocities against MPs.

Earlier in the day, Congress functionaries were seen marching towards the Rashtrapati Bhawan from Vijay Chowk in protest against the Agnipath scheme.
Speaking to ANI, Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha and senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge said the president was informed that the Agnipath scheme was neither discussed with any committee nor was presented in Parliament which is a violation of democratic rights.

“On Agnipath scheme, we’ve told the President that it was neither discussed with any committee nor was presented in Parliament. We said that this is a violation of our democratic rights. President has been asked to take this into consideration,” Kharge said.

Senior leader P Chidambaram said a second memorandum submitted to Kovind was about the police atrocities on Congress leaders.

“We have asked the President to order an enquiry into this and send the matter to the Parliamentary Privileges Committee,” Chidambaram said.

“We will present our case and let the Delhi Police and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) present their case. Let the committee decide whether there has been a breach or not. The President has assured us that he will look into it and take it up with the government,” he added.

Earlier in the day, Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) cadres protested near Sasthri Bhavan in Chennai’s Nungambakkam.

DYFI cadres raised slogans against the Central government and demanded the rollback of the Agnipath Scheme.

Over 80 trains have been cancelled and massive traffic jams are being witnessed across Delhi-NCR on Monday as some organisations have called for a “Bharat Bandh” to mark their protest against the Agnipath recruitment scheme unveiled by the Central government last week. This comes a day after Tri-service chiefs ruled out the withdrawal of the scheme.

The commuters in the national capital experienced difficulties in commuting as heavy traffic jams were reported in various parts of the city including at the Delhi-Gurugram expressway as Delhi Police installed barricades at various checkpoints in wake of the Bharat Bandh against the Agnipath Scheme.

The Union Cabinet on June 14 approved a recruitment scheme for Indian youth to serve in the three services of the Armed Forces called Agnipath and the youth selected under this scheme will be known as Agniveers.

After the policy, which allows Indian youths to serve in the regular cadre of the Armed Forces for a period of four years, was announced on June 14, protests erupted in various states including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Haryana, Telangana, Odisha, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Jharkhand and Assam.

As the agitation intensified in some places, protestors went on the rampage setting trains on fire, torching vehicles and damaging both private and public properties.

Protests have disrupted rail services in several parts of the country. A total of 491 train services have been affected throughout the country due to the ongoing agitation, informed railway officials on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the first batch of Agniveers will avail a further relaxation of 5 years beyond the upper age limit of 23, taking it to 28 years. (ANI)

Analysis: Pakistan-Tehreek e Taliban Deal Doomed To Fail

Pakistan’s sheer desperation for peace with the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) comes as the country’s economy continues to remain in shambles and the prevailing political instability has made the Pakistani state “weak and vulnerable.”

The differences between the coalition partners – Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on the transparency issue of the TTP talks led Bilawal Bhutto and Asif Zardari to reach out to other political parties in the parliament over Pakistan’s talks with the TTP and constitute a three-member committee.

After much criticism over the absence of the government’s response to the ongoing ‘peace talks’ between the Pakistan Army, Afghan Taliban, and TTP, political stakeholders have finally decided to take cognisance of the matter. Under Pakistan’s constitution, the civilian government cannot negotiate — at least not directly with those waging an insurgency against it.

While PPP seems concerned about the concessions TTP is getting from the army establishment for the success of the dialogue, PML-N has largely ignored the matter.

In addition, the security establishment fears that the Afghan Taliban may support TTP in its quest to impose the ‘Sharia Law’, on the lines of Afghanistan, in Pakistan as well.

There is also a reported push from China to tame TTP to avoid any nefarious activities against China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects and targeting of Chinese nationals in Pakistan. Lastly, the possibility of ‘Pashtun’ nationalism may prove a grave threat to the Punjabi-dominated army establishment in Pakistan. Therefore, Rawalpindi is opting for a peace agreement with TTP, like the US-Taliban Doha accord, instead of military operations as the Pakistan army does not want to lose its “strategic depth” in Afghanistan by angering its “trusted” Islamist proxy elements.

Even retired officers from the defence forces and law enforcement agencies have cast aspersions over the dialogue and advised to “only negotiate the terms of surrender [of TTP militants].”

Overall, the talks have not yielded much in the last month as differences remain despite the Afghan Taliban’s push and participation of a suspicious 50-member delegation of tribal elders, dubbed as a Jirga, in Kabul. As a saving grace for the military establishment, the TTP has reportedly agreed to extend the ceasefire “indefinitely” to continue negotiations.

Nevertheless, the ceasefire may not hold for long unless TTP’s demands are not met soon. Based on the past experiences of negotiations between the Pakistan army and TTP – over a dozen agreements – this time as well the deal will eventually fall apart, leading to more bloodshed in the country.

Sirajuddin Haqqani, Taliban’s deputy Emir and minister of the interior, has played a critical role in facilitating the ‘peace talks’ between Pakistan and TTP, considering his historical closeness to both the TTP and Pakistan’s security establishment.

Therefore, Haqqani’s role in bringing peace between the two warring parties will be critical in deciding the future of the dialogue. Sirajuddin’s appointment as the new interior minister of Afghanistan was not a coincidence but a planned move by Rawalpindi to put their “trusted men” at the helm in Kabul.

However, the historical ties between the Haqqani Network and TTP, both eastern Pashtuns, may prove a roadblock for Pakistan to pressure Sirajuddin on fulfilling their objectives with the TTP.

Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) province has seen an uptick in terrorism-related activities since the Taliban took over Afghanistan in August 2021.

In the ongoing negotiations with Pakistan, TTP has put forth the following key demands: the reversal of the merger of former Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) with KPK as per the 25th Constitutional Amendment; substituting all military presence from the region with frontier corps; enforcement of Sharia law in the Malakand division; release of 102 commanders and fighters and presidential pardon to two key militant commanders; and complete freedom of movement for the TTP’s members in the Malakand division.

It is noteworthy that some TTP factions have been operating with impunity in tribal areas of FATA, enforcing stricter versions of Islam, and levying taxes on the locals, especially in the Malakand division.

There have been reports that Pakistan may accept most of these demands except the re-merger of FATA into KPK. The open acceptance of TTP’s demands will be considered as an abject surrender of the Pakistan Army. Therefore, the dialogue has been kept opaque besides some deliberate leaks and rare official acknowledgements. (ANI)

Southern Cinema

Spotlight Shifts to South

More than one Bachhan and three Khans who had a free run on the national big screen and also vowed the non-resident Indian community for as long as one can remember ahead of the breakout of Covid-19, the heroes and heroines of the South aided by competent directors, musicians and technicians with mastery of IT are now calling the shots in the Indian film industry. Shah Rukh Khan is still very popular as an individual and courted by companies to launch their products and services. But it will be difficult to recall his last film where his mojo worked wonders at box office. It is not that he did not make attempts to reinvent himself but he has so far not been able to pull crowds with his last few films.

There was a time, long in the past indeed, when the unpretentious Salman Khan was synonymous with monumental successes in terms of revenues and profits for any film featuring him. But Salman with no claims to making anything but commercial cinema was found smart in often remaking highly successful South Indian films and laugh all the way to the bank. He, therefore, owes a big part of his success to his southern peers.

Take Ghajini, a Hindi remake of the original Tamil thriller directed by AR Murugadoss. In the Hindi remake featuring Aamir Khan in the role of protagonist, producers rightly thought their investment would fetch high returns with Murugadoss remaining the director, who incidentally is also the story writer. Ghajini stands out as an example of all-India triumph of a Tamil film in its Hindi avatar with AR Rahman as music director and other professional big names adding much value.

In its halcyon days when Bollywood with all its big production houses could not think of ever being challenged by what was perceived as makers of regional films, the country was witness to periodic dubbing and remaking of southern films in Bombay that made waves across the country.

A decade apart in 1981 we first saw the remake of Telegu film Maro Charitra (story, screen play and direction by K Balachander) into Ek Dujje Ke Liye (translated in English ‘Made for each other’) and then straight dubbing of Tamil romantic thriller Roja written and directed by Mani Ratnam into Hindi. What is special about these two movies, made originally in Telegu and Tamil for Bollywood, which would claim for itself the exclusive status of making films for the whole country and also abroad?

Even for Satyajit Roy, the winner of Oscar Life Time Achievement Award and maker of two globally acclaimed Hindi films and whose work inspired filmmakers such as Francois Truffaut, Martin Scorsese and Carlos Saura, Bollywood will not be found generous in its appreciation. A Balraj Sahni then or a Shyam Benegal now is not part of core Bollywood. Hindi adaptation of the two southern movies in 1981 and then in 1992, much to the surprise and maybe to some degree of shock to the Bollywood establishment, acquired cult status. In every aspect of filmmaking from storytelling to direction to cinematography to editing to music, the southern establishment had a few lessons for Bollywood. The musical genius SP Balasubrahmanyam, who was worshipped all over the south made a robust entry into Hindi playback singing through Ek Dujje Ke Liye. Unfortunately, the legendary singer passed away in September 2020.

That the South was abundantly rich in every area of filmmaking – storytelling, direction, cinematography, music direction, editing and acting – was never in doubt. But for very long, it’s largely the people in the south of Vindhyachal who were aware of that genius. Only a few in the rest of the country being keen followers of cinema parallel to commercial movies, the staple of Bollywood, are aware of the works of Adoor Gopalkrishnan, Govindan Aravindan and Shaji N. Karun. They have inspired quite a few to think differently and experiment with the medium and their influence among neo filmmakers is not confined to the south. Creativity apart, the mainstream film industry in the South is backed by excellent infrastructure, in many ways unarguably the best in the country and matching the world benchmark. But where the South has left other filmmaking centres well behind is in adoption of technologies.

One gets a fair idea of that when one sees on big screen films such as Baahubali, Baahubali 2, Pushpa: The Rise and RRR. What the two Baahubali flicks have shown in terms of production scale, racy storytelling, visual effects and larger than life acting and box office collection, is something extraordinary that Indian cinema has never experienced before. In many ways, the unpretentious Baahubali has set new standards for the likes of Sanjay Leela Bhansalis of Bollywood.

Or take Minnal (lightning in English) Murali (MM). Indian film needed its own version of a Superman or a Spiderman or a Batman. We got it for the first time when overcoming all the Covid-19 related production dislocations and releases in theatres, Basil Joseph directed Malayalam language MM (a young tailor turning into a superhero after being struck by lightning) was released to universal acclaim in September last year. Unlike Baahubali and RRR, MM is a small budget film. But it stands out for breaking new grounds.

It has been seen over the years that Bollywood would lean on the South for cinema making material, if not wholesale remaking of successful southern productions. Even then, it required the recent mind-boggling successes of RRR and Baahubali and the rest for filmmakers in Mumbai to give up their condescending attitude of Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam and Telegu cinema. Interestingly without seeking any accommodation from the Mumbai establishment, the South has convincingly emerged as maker of films with their appeal transcending national boundaries to overseas. Bollywood reservations about films made in the South, however, defied logic on many counts.

From Vyjayanthimala to Waheeda Rehman to Hema Malini to Sridevi to Aishwarya Rai who ruled the Hindi screen for decades for their mastery of classical Indian dance and acting are all from the South. That tradition continues with talented, good looking girls from the south making it big in Bollywood. The talent pool in the South is so large that Bollywood has the assurance of having a good number of actresses from there at all times. So we now have Shruti Haassan (Kamal Haasan’s daughter), Vidya Balan, Kajal Aggarwal, Asin Thottumkal, Taapsee Pannu and Genelia DSouza, among others from the South having acquired all-India fame through Bollywood.

Know the meaning of the Tamil word thalaiva – it stands for sir or boss or leader. In the universe of the South, the Tamil superstar Rajinikanth, who will unfailingly spell enormous success at the box office is the thalaiva. Though in his seventies and he wears a wig while acting in films, his appeal among the masses and also southern elite has remained undiminished. His film stunts from the way he will play with a cigarette to his flipping of a stole at the blink of an eye before putting it on his shoulder to his running on speeding trains have encouraged many imitations but not to his kind of perfection. Born to Marathi parents in Karnataka as Shivaji Rao Gaekwad, he was given the name Rajinikanth by the late filmmaker and playwright K Balachander and was told to learn and master Tamil. Rajinikanth, before he made a sterling career of filmmaking experienced the raw side of life as he worked as a coolie and then a bus conductor.

On the screen he acts inconceivably larger than life. Two examples: First, the villain shoots at him but Rajinikanth takes it on his palm, which then on deflection kills a bird; second, he uses a knife to cut an approaching bullet into two before he goes to kill three villains. Rajinikanth does all this so naturally that the sheer absurdities don’t bother his millions of admirers. In the Greek pantheon of gods, mortal born heroes and heroines attain godhood through a process which the Greeks call apotheosis. Hindu mythologies are full of instances of gods and goddesses performing miracles all the time and are revered for that. Rajinikanth is no less than a God to his army of fans who will go the extent of bathing his large cardboard cut-outs with milk like the Hindus will do to Shivalingas. He has featured in a number of hit Bollywood movies such as Andha Kanoon, Bewafai, Bhagwaan Dada, Uttar Dakshin, Chaal Baaz and Hum. Besides him, stars from the South such as Girish Karnad, Kamal Hassan and Dhanush have done Hindi movies to public acclaim.

With box office successes eluding Hindi films in the post Covid period, any major south Indian film releases, specially with Hindi adaptation are sending the Bollywood bigwigs down a rabbit hole of blind panic. No wonder, Bollywood filmmakers are now found ensuring that their releases stay at least a few weeks away from big budget releases from south India. All this amounts to a big climb down by Bollywood from an attitude of patronising superiority to good films made in other parts of the country their due. Bollywood experiencing catharsis.

Cong MPs To Hold Meeting Over ED-Rahul Probe, Agnipath Scheme

Congress MPs will hold a meeting at the Parliamentary Party office in Parliament on Monday over the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) probe against Rahul Gandhi in a money laundering case linked to the National Herald newspaper and the Centre’s newly launched Agnipath recruitment scheme.

Congress held a ‘Satyagraha’ at Jantar Mantar in the national capital on Monday to mark their protest over both these issues.
Top Congress leaders including Mallikarjun Kharge, Salman Khurshid, K Suresh, V Narayanasamy, KC Venugopal and others were present at Congress’ Satyagraha at Jantar Mantar.

As the protests continue, the Twitter handle of the Congress party on behalf of Rahul Gandhi wrote, “People who make false promises of providing employment to two crore youth every year, are forcing the youth of the country to walk on the ‘firepath’ of unemployment. The situation is deteriorating all around the country at this time, only and only the Prime Minister is responsible for it.”

Mallikarjun Kharge also lashed out at the Centre over the Agnipath scheme. He tweeted today, “For the first time in 75 years, service chiefs are being fronted to defend a policy decision by the government. Why are the Prime Minister, Home Minister and Defence Minister quiet on the Agnipath scheme?”

Precautionary measures are being taken at various railway stations in many states as several stations were vandalised and many trains were set ablaze by agitators.

Protests have disrupted rail services in several parts of the country. A total of 491 train services have been affected throughout the country due to the ongoing agitation, informed railway officials on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday rejoined Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) ongoing investigation in connection with an alleged money laundering case related to the National Herald newspaper for the fourth day.

The Lok Sabha member from Wayanad in Kerala arrived at ED headquarters at around 11.10 am accompanied by his sister Priyanka Gandhi.

Rahul Gandhi was questioned by the ED for over 27 hours on three straight days from June 13 to June 15. The Congress leader was deposed before the ED investigators in the case for the first time on June 13.

He first sought exemption from appearance on June 16, following which he was called on June 17. But the senior Congress leader wrote to the ED to postpone his questioning citing the illness of his mother Sonia Gandhi. The ED then allowed him to join the probe on June 20 on his request. (ANI)
