Mirabai Chanu Clinches First Gold For India At CWG 2022

Tokyo Olympic silver medallist Indian weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu won a gold medal with a combined lift of 201kg in the Women’s 49kg final at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham on Saturday.

Mirabai added one more gem to her crown and took home the gold as she added another medal to India’s tally on day 2 of the CWG with a total of 201kg.

In her first attempt at the Snatch category, Mirabai made a great start and successfully lifted 84kg. Mirabai successfully lifted the required 88kg in her second. She performed her personal best at the level of representing India. In the final attempt of the Snatch category, the Tokyo Olympics silver medalist failed to lift 90kg with exhibiting stunning power.

Mirabai created a new Commonwealth Games record by lifting 88kg in her second attempt in the snatch round.

She leads the race with a 12-kg gap with second-placed Marie Hanitra Roilya Ranaivosoa.

In the Clean and Jerk lift category, Mirabai exhibited a stunning display of power as she lifted 109kg in her first attempt. In her second attempt, she lifted 113kg. In her final attempt at this category, she failed to lift 115kg but she did not fail to clinch the first gold medal for India in this multi-sports event in 2022.

Talking about her stunning career, The Manipuri weightlifter bagged a silver medal for India on the opening day of the prestigious showpiece event in the 49 Kg weight category lifting 202 Kg (87+115) (including both snatch and clean & jerk).

The 28-year-old bagged her first Commonwealth Games medal in Glasgow in 2014 by winning a silver in the 48 Kg weight category. In Rio Olympics 2016 she failed but bounced back two years later to win a gold medal in the 2017 World Championship.

She carried it with her rich run of form to win a gold medal in Gold Coast Commonwealth Games 2018. But her real test came in 2021 in Tokyo Olympics when she bounced back from her previous Olympics debacle to become the first Indian weightlifter to win a silver medal in the Olympics and only the second Indian weightlifter to win an Olympic medal after Karnam Malleswari who won a bronze in Sydney Olympics 2000. Gujarat Riots Case: Court Rejects Bail Pleas Of Teesta, Sreekumar

The sessions court in Ahmedabad on Saturday rejected the bail plea of activist Teesta Setalvad and former Director General of Police RB Sreekumar in the 2002 Gujarat riots case.

Earlier, the court had reserved its order on the bail applications of both Setalvad and Sreekumar.
Notably, the government had submitted an affidavit opposing the bail application.

Both the sides had concluded presenting their arguments last week, following which the court had reserved its order.

The Gujarat Police Crime Branch on June 26 had arrested Teesta Setalvad in connection with a case against her NGO which gave baseless information about the 2002 Gujarat riots to the police.

The SIT had filed serious charges against Teesta Setalvad, RB Sreekumar and Sanjeev Bhatt in the case of defaming several people including the then Chief Minister Narendra Modi in the case of petitions to various commissions and the Supreme Court.

An SIT report, earlier this month, revealed that Teesta, Sreekumar and former IPS officer Sanjeev Bhatt had accepted Rs 30 lakh from late Congress leader Ahmed Patel, the then political advisor to Sonia Gandhi, to allegedly frame then Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi and destabilise his government following the 2002 Gujarat riots.

The SIT was formed to probe Setalvad along with RB Sreekumar for criminal conspiracy and forgery.

SIT ACP BC Solanki and Special public prosecutors Mitesh Amin and Amit Patel had filed an affidavit in the sessions court against the bail plea filed by Teesta, Sreekumar in the Sessions Court stating that the accused had entered into a larger conspiracy with the intention of obtaining illegal money and other benefits from the Congress.

A metropolitan court in Ahmedabad sent Setalvad and Sreekumar to 14-day judicial custody on July 2. Former IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt was arrested by the Ahmedabad Police’s Crime Branch in connection with the Gujarat riots case for embezzling funds and forging documents.

Last month, the Supreme Court dismissed the plea filed by Zakia Jafri, widow of former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri, challenging the clean chit given by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to then Chief Minister Narendra Modi and several others in the 2002 Gujarat riots.

Ehsan Jafri was among 69 people killed during violence at the Gulberg Society in Ahmedabad on February 28, 2002. His widow Zakia Jafri challenged the SIT’s clean chit to 64 people including Narendra Modi. According to the SIT, Zakia Jafri was used as a tool by Teesta.

After 58 pilgrims were burnt alive on the Sabarmati Express train at Gujarat’s Godhra railway station on February 27, 2002, riots broke out across the state in which more than 1,000 people were killed. (ANI)

Governor Koshyari Has Insulted Marathis: Uddhav Thackeray

Maharashtra’s former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray slammed Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari and said that he has insulted the Marathis and their pride and that he is trying to divide the society on the basis of community.

Uddhav Thackeray said, “I do not want to insult someone sitting on the post of Governor. I respect the chair but Bhagat Singh Koshyari insulted Marathis and there is anger among the people. Governor is trying to divide the society on the basis of religion, he is crossing every limit”.

“The Governor is the messenger of the President, he takes the words of the President throughout the country. But if he does the same mistakes, then who will take action against him? He has insulted the Marathis and their pride,” Uddhav added.

Shiv Sena Chief’s comment came as a reaction to the Maharashtra Governor Koshyari when he had created a controversy by stating that, if Gujaratis and Rajasthanis were removed from Maharashtra, then Mumbai will no longer remain the financial capital of the country.

During a speech at an event held to name a chowk after the late Shantideva Champalalji Kothari in Mumbai’s Andheri on Friday, Koshyari said, “Sometimes I tell people in Maharashtra that if Gujarati and Rajasthani people are removed from here, then you will be left with no money. You call Mumbai the financial capital, but if these people of both these states are not here, then it won’t be called financial capital.”

The statement, however, triggered a political storm with many claiming that the sentiments of the Marathi people were hurried and their contribution ignored. Many political leaders took to Twitter to oppose the governor’s statement.

Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut claimed that Koshyari’s speech was an insult to the people of Maharashtra. He urged Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to condemn the statement.

“The Marathi man gets insulted as soon as a BJP-sponsored Chief Minister is in power. CM Shinde should, at least, condemn the Governor. This is an insult to Marathi hard-working people,” Raut said in a tweet on Saturday.

In another tweet, Raut said, “Chief Minister Shinde, are you listening? That your Maharashtra is different. If you have self-respect, then seek the resignation of the governor.” (ANI)

Sanket Sargar Opens India Tally With Silver At CWG 2022

Indian weightlifter Sanket Sargar has opened India’s account by winning a Silver medal with a combined lift of 248 kg in the Men’s 55 kg final at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham.

He finished as the leader in the Snatch category with 113 kg and slipped to second in the Clean and Jerk category with 135 kg due to an injury in his second attempt.

Aniq Kasdan of Malaysia won the gold medal and challenged the Indian throughout the event, ending with a combined lift of 249 kg, consisting of 107 kg in Snatch and 142 kg in Clean and Jerk.

Sri Lanka’s Dilanka Isuru Kumara won the bronze with a combined lift of 225 kg. He lifted a best of 105 kg in the Snatch category and 120 in Clean and Jerk.

In the snatch category, Sargar made a great start and lifted 107 kg in his first attempt. But Aniq Kasdan of Malaysia matched him and lifted 107 kg himself.

Sargar successfully lifted the required 111 kg in his second attempt. Kasdan failed in his second attempt to lift the same amount and gave the lead to Sargar.

Sri Lanka’s Dilanka Isuru Kumara upped the required standard for Sargar and lifted 112 kg. Sargar responded by successfully lifting an incredible 113 in his final attempt. With Dilanka’s lift being declared as ‘no lift’ later, Sargar finished the Snatch leaderboard at the top position.

With Sargar at the top in Snatch, the competitors headed to the Clean and Jerk lift category.

The 22-year-old made an immediate impact in his first Clean and Jerk attempt as he lifted the required 135 kg to go to the very top of the leaderboard. Kasdan continued challenging his Indian opponent and lifted 138 in his first attempt. He was just 3 kgs behind the Indian with a combined lift of 245 kg.

Sargar failed to lift 139 kg in his second attempt and seemingly injured his elbow. He tried to go for his third attempt but failed again and ended with a combined lift of 248 kg. Kasdan successfully lifted 142 kg in his final attempt and upped his combined lift to 249 kg, just one ahead of Sargar.

The Indian weightlifter missed out on the Gold medal because of the unfortunate injury in his second clean and jerk attempt but ended with a silver nonetheless. Kasdan won the gold medal for Malaysia.

Sanket Sagar hails from Sangli in Maharashtra. The 22-year-old is the reigning national-level champion in his weight category of 55 kg. Earlier in February this year, he had qualified for Commonwealth Games with his performance at the Singapore Weightlifting International event.

At that event, he not only earned his qualification for the multi-sport event, but also smashed the Commonwealth Championships and National Level record with a combined lift of 256 kg, which consists of 113 kg in the Snatch category and 143 in the Clean and Jerk category. This performance earned him a gold medal at the event.

At the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in December 2021 in Tashkent, he won a gold medal with a lift of 113 kg, which also helped him create a new national record in the Snatch category. (ANI)

Delhi Govt To Revoke Excise Policy; Liquor To Be Sold Only At Govt Shops From Aug 1

The Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government has decided to withdraw its new excise policy and directed that liquor be sold only through government-run shops from August 1, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said on Saturday.

Sisodia claimed that his party’s government brought in a new excise policy to curb graft but central agencies were used to threaten shopkeepers as well as state officials. Targeting the BJP, he claimed this was done to encourage the sale of illegal as well as spurious liquor.

“We have decided to withdraw the new policy and ordered liquor be sold only through government-run shops. We have done this so that no one can sell illegal or spurious liquor in the capital. I have ordered the state chief secretary to ensure there is no corruption,” Sisodia said at a press conference.

He claimed that before 2021, liquor was sold in Delhi through government shops and alleged there was a lot of corruption. I also carried out some raids, he said.

“Our government brought a new policy last year. Earlier, there used to be some private shops but they would be allotted to near and dear ones. We ended this system and brought a new policy. We carried out a transparent auction. We decided that like earlier there will be only 850 shops. The government used to earn a revenue of Rs 6000 crore every year but under the new policy, the revenue would have risen to Rs 9,500 crore,” he claimed.

Sisodia, who is under fire from the BJP over allegations of irregularities in the excise policy implementation, however, claimed that central agencies were used to threaten liquor shopkeepers with ED and CBI. Many of the shopkeepers left the business. Today there are only 468 shops functional, he said.

“Many more plan to leave the shops. They want to create a liquor shortage in Delhi and want to encourage illegal and spurious liquor trade,” he said. Sisodia claimed even Delhi government officials were scared of the ED and the CBI.

The excise policy was passed in chief minister Arvind Kejriwal-led Cabinet in the middle of the deadly Covid-19 pandemic in 2021.

Delhi government’s excise policy has been at the centre of a massive AAP-BJP political fight. The BJP has been accusing the government of irregularities and corruption in its implementation. Sisodia hit back saying illegal liquor sale was prevalent in BJP-ruled Gujarat.

The Delhi Police’s Economic Offences Wing (EOW) is also conducting a probe into the matter. There has also been a face-off between Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena and the Delhi government’s top brass over the new liquor policy.

The Excise Policy 2021-22, which was extended twice after March 31 for two months each, will expire on July 31. The strained ties between the Centre and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Delhi worsened last week when Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena recommended a CBI probe into the Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22, holding Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, in charge of the excise department, accountable.

Right after this move, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal lashed out at the Centre, saying the Lieutenant Governor was making “false allegations” and leaders of the AAP were “not afraid of jail”. (ANI)

Nuts & Nutrition — For Brain & Brawn

Abdul Halim Sharar, in his classic work Last Phase of an Oriental Culture has provided a vivid description of exotic dishes prepared by the bawarchi employed by Nawabs of Lucknow. He mentions a khichdi cooked with almonds slivers and bits of pistachio substituted for grains of rice or mung lentils. It was so heavy that even a wrestler employed in the court could not have more than a couple of mouthfuls after a workout. Nuts have always inspired legend and lore creating a mystique around them.

From prehistoric times, nuts and seeds along with fruits and roots have provided essential nutrition to humanity. Our hunter-gatherer ancestors relied on them to almost the same extent as they did on the flesh of animals, birds and fish they could trap. As agriculture was mastered and wild grasses and grains were domesticated, animal husbandry flourished. Nuts and seeds slowly receded into the background. Their use was confined to additives and garnishes. It is only recently that they are enjoying a robust revival and some nuts have even acquired the status of ‘super foods’.

Botanists insist that many of the nuts can’t be categorized as true nuts, but we shall let that pass. Strictly speaking, a nut is a seed covered by a hard shell. Chestnut, Walnut, Peanut, Pine nut, Pistachio and Cashew nut may all be cited as suitable illustrations. For the purists, among the indisputable is the Brazilian nut. Even the coconut falls in the twilight zone. Most of the nuts in India are given the name ‘mewa’ and are lumped together with dried fruits like raisin, sultanas, apricots, dates and figs. In recent years, imports have made exotic nuts like hazel nuts and Macadamia nuts to urban Indians.

Not all nuts are born or created equal. In the Indian mind, pistachio, almonds and cashew nuts are arranged at the top of the heap in descending order. Mostly they are used in the preparation of expensive sweets. Some traditional cooks claiming a linage traced back to princely kitchens used to prepare a shahi gravy with almond and cashew paste. The same gravy is used to glorify any vegetarian or non-vegetarian delicacy. At times corners are cut and ground nut paste is used to adulterate the ‘shahi’ gravy. Chilgoze ki Kheer using pine nuts for long-grained rice is perhaps the most exotic of kheers. Peanuts have always been treated as the Cinderella of the nut family, it was once referred to as the ‘chiniya badam’ (almonds from China) and this was at a time when during the colonial period Chinese and Japanese imports were considered ‘sub-standard’. A lowbrow Punjabi play once had a snide comment about a character at the expense of poor peanuts. The pretentious lady, it was said, ‘gorged on peanuts but belched of almonds’.

In the era of globalization the range of nuts available has expanded even when one takes almonds, one can snack on honey roasted, pepper roasted or Peri Peri-tinged almonds. Salted, roasted and fried spicy cashew nuts seem to have lost out to this competition. Surprisingly, peanuts have been reinvented, many companies market them in different avatars, deep fried, draped in batter or shelled in different flavours. Even the plebeian peanut salad, the staple accompaniment in down-market bars has entered the five-star eateries and has been tweaked to become special. Boiled peanuts continue to be served on the bed of crisp papar drizzled with diced tomatoes and chilis sprinkled over with olive oil and enriched with black and green olives along with sun-dried tomatoes.

Salan made with pistachios was believed to be an aphrodisiac recipe created for the ravenous appetites of the princes in Patiala. The best quality peanuts came from Kabul and were valued for their delicate colour and taste. Piste ke longie ranked much higher than any other barfi. Very little sugar syrup was used to bind the flavours of the nut together.

In southern India, Kaju continues to be the most preferred nut that is added to almost everything to make it special from halwas to upma and in the western coast, kaju curry and kaju pulav are also made. This is understandable as it was in Goa where the Portuguese first introduced cashew nut to India. The Goans distilled a delectable alcoholic beverage feni from the cashew fruit as well. No one in India has made a liquor like amaretto from almonds, but badam-rogan shirin has for generations been valued for its therapeutic properties.

In Sindh (in undivided India) it was customary to prepare reinvigorating nuts and dried fruit paste called majoon to be served to the bride groom as breakfast on the morning after the wedding night.

The nuts have come into their own in the wake of Veganism gathering momentum. Milk made with nuts– almonds and cashew nuts — is preferred over the run-of-the-mill soyabean milk. Peanut butter is a popular substitute for the dairy-based counterpart.

Consumers are suddenly getting interested in the history of different nuts and are curious to know if scientific research has validated their nutritional claims. The oldest trace of cultivated wild peanuts is found in Peru dating back about 7600 years. Cashews are said to be native to Northern Brazil and Southern Venezuela until they were distributed around the world through colonial expansion. Pistachios are believed to have come from Central Asia, more precisely near Iran and Afghanistan. Archaeological evidence corroborates that pistachio seeds were a common food in this region as early as 6750 BCE. Almond fruits found in Tutankhamun’s tomb in Egypt depict that they were domesticated in the fourth millennium BCE. Walnut travelled from Byzantine Empire (where it was commonly known as royal nut) to Kashmir through the silk routes.

A handful of nuts pack a lot of nutritional punch. A 100g of raw peanuts contain about 567 calories, 25g protein, 49g fat. Walnuts have higher micronutrients like vitamin E, Omega-3’s, and Manganese while cashews have magnesium, zinc, iron, copper, and phosphorus. Pine nuts are a great source of monounsaturated, polyunsaturated fat and Omega-6.

All this is reassuring but the cost of nuts-including peanuts- continues to keep their consumption restricted to the affluent section of society.

Ease Of Justice As Important As Ease Of Living: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said that Ease of justice is equally important as ease of doing business and ease of living.

Addressing the inaugural session of the First All India District Legal Services Authorities, PM Modi said: “This time is a time of Azadi Ka Amrit Kaal. This is the time for those resolutions which will take the country to new heights in the next 25 years. Ease of justice is equally important like ease of doing business and the ease of living in this Amrit Yatra of the country.”

Sharing a stage with Chief Justice NV Ramana at the event held at Vigyan Bhawan here today, PM Modi said: “As important as access to the judicial system is for any society, justice delivery is equally important. The judicial infrastructure also has an important contribution to this. In the last eight years work has been done at a fast pace to strengthen the judicial infrastructure of the country.”

“Under the e-courts mission, virtual courts are being started in the country. Twenty-four-hour courts have started functioning for crimes like traffic violations. Video conferencing infrastructure is also being expanded in the courts for the convenience of the people,” the prime minister said.

Justices Uday U Lalit and DY Chandrachud, law minister Kiren Rijiju were among others present at the event.

The first ever national level meet of District Legal Services Authorities (DLSAs) is being organised from July 30-31, 2022 at Vigyan Bhawan by National Legal Services Authority (NALSA). The meet deliberates on creation of an integrated procedure in order to bring homogeneity and synchronisation across DLSAs.

There are a total 676 District Legal Services Authorities (DLSAs) in the country. They are headed by the District Judge who acts as Chairman of the authority.

Through DLSAs and State Legal Services Authorities (SLSAs), various legal aid and awareness programmes are implemented by NALSA. The DLSAs also contribute towards reducing the burden on courts by regulating the Lok Adalats conducted by NALSA. (ANI)

Mumbai Won’t Be Finance Capital If Gujaratis, Marwadis Leave: Governor

Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari has triggered a row claiming that if Gujaratis and Rajasthanis were removed from Maharashtra then Mumbai will no longer remain the financial capital of the country.

During a speech at an event held to name a chowk after the late Shantidevi Champalalji Kothari in Mumbai’s in Andheri on Friday, Koshyari said, “Sometimes I tell people in Maharashtra that if Gujarati and Rajasthani people are removed from here, then you will be left with no money. You call Mumbai the financial capital, but if these people of both these states are not here, then it won’t be called financial capital.”

The statement, however, triggered a political storm with many claiming that the sentiments of Marathi people were hury and their contribution ignored.

CM Shinde, at least condemn the Governor. This is an insult to Marathi hard-working people,” Raut said in a tweet on Saturday.

In another tweet, Raut said, “Chief Minister Shinde, are you listening? That your Maharashtra is different. If you have self-respect, then seek the resignation of the governor.”

Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, meanwhile, demanded an apology from the governor. “This is an insult to the hard work of the people of Maharashtra and Marathi Manoos who have toiled day in and day out to make the state the leading state of the country. The Governor should apologize immediately, failing which, we will demand to replace him,” she tweeted.

Congress leaders also condemned the statement. “His name is ‘Koshiyari’, but as a governor, there is not a bit of ‘hoshiyari’ (smartness) in what he says and does. He is sitting on the chair only because he faithfully obeys the command of ‘we two’,” Congress spokesperson Jairam Ramesh tweeted.

Congress leader Sachin Sawant said the insult of the Marathi people by the governor of Maharashtra is terrible. He said, “It is terrible that the Governor of a state defames the people of the same state. During his reign, the level of the institution of the Governor and the political tradition of Maharashtra has not only deteriorated, but Maharashtra has also been continuously disrespected.”

Bhagat Singh Koshyari in his speech praised the Marwari Gujarati community and said that wherever they go, they contribute to the development of the place by creating hospitals, schools, etc. (ANI)
