Arjun Blows Kiss To Malaika As He Walks Ramp

Arjun Kapoor turned showstopper for Kunal Rawal’s couture show on Saturday, and he shared a cute moment on the ramp with his beau Malaika Arora.
Malaika was there at the show to cheer for Arjun and as he walked in she couldn’t stop gushing! Seater with her friends, Malaika cheered for Arjun throughout. He even gave a flying kiss to her from distance.

Dressed in an embellished black sherwani, Arjun oozed charm on the ramp. Malaika Arora was also wearing a Kunal Rawal number – a bandhgala with a cropped top and skirt which was fashioned in golden waffle embroidery.

“We’ve been friends for so many years but now Kunal is like family to me, I’m happy to have been a part of his journey. I feel really good to see how far he has come,” said Arjun after he closed the show.

Arjun’s cousin Mohit Marwah and his wife Antara Motiwala were also in attendance.

Speaking about the show, Kunal drew a lot of appreciation for the models who walked his show. Breaking stereotypes, Kunal gave great importance to inclusivity.

His show was opened by a charming young boy who everybody sitting in the audience couldn’t stop going gaga over. Wearing his latest collection ‘Dear Men’, were models of different ethnicities, age, height, and body types sashaying down the runway.

‘Age is just a number’ isn’t an outdated concept for Kunal who had men sporting grey hair as well as kids as his models.

Another interesting thing that was on display was the beautifully crafted jewellery that the men wore, breaking gendered stereotypes linked to jewellery. Representing gender fluidity, Arjun wore a shiny neckpiece under his black sherwani.

A big believer in androgynous and gender-fluid pieces, Kunal experimented with structured pieces complimented by new silhouettes. The collection was replete with flattering garments for every form, shape, and style. Jackets with built-in stoles, pattern play, and intriguing made for good couture pieces.

The eponymous label explored its design sensibilities which are free from gender stereotypes – making fluidity the new norm.

“To us, couture is wearable art, it should be functional and smart. That’s why we believe in crafting occasion wear that can cater to the whole spectrum of celebrations ranging from modern luxury to deep-rooted traditions. Truly versatile ensembles you can easily dress up or tone down, mix or match, or even wear to work. Who are we to tell you what to wear and when? We don’t design from one point of view; we aspire to dress diversity in its entirety. Especially when we have such a big bank of influences to pull from, in addition to fulfilling needs like comfort, mood, functionality, and wearability. This collection has been created to set the stage for meaningful interactions between the audience and our designs. The media landscape is changing every day, and we are beginning to see real diversity and true representation. For us, the fun is in creating pieces for a market as diverse as India with clothes for different shapes and sizes, different moods, and yet have a signature come through,” said Kunal. (ANI)

Iran Flood: Death Toll Touches 53, Hunt On For Missing

As many as 53 people have been killed in the recent flash floods that wreaked havoc across Iran following heavy rainfall.

Mehdi Vallipour, head of the Relief and Rescue Organization of the Iranian Red Crescent Society, told the semi-official Fars News Agency that 16 people were still missing and 3000 people have been provided with emergency accommodation, Xinhua reported.
Vallipour further said that another 1300 people were transferred to safe places. He further said that the rescue operations are being carried out by 687 rescue teams comprising 3,000 rescuers.

Meanwhile, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi on Friday ordered the ministers, heads of organizations and governors-general across the country to mobilize all their facilities to manage the possible floods, according to the presidential website.

“It is necessary for the governors-general to provide relief to the flooded areas in their provinces or to certain neighbouring provinces with all available facilities,” he said as quoted by Xinhua.

Last Saturday, Al Jazeera reported that at least 22 people were dead and one went missing in the flash floods in Southern Iran.

The officials of the local Red Crescent Society Aid group on Saturday confirmed the deaths and further said that 150 emergency responders along with an aerial unit working at the town of Estahban, 174km (108 miles) east of the provincial capital, Shiraz.

Estahban Governor, Yousef Kargar said that the heavy rains on Friday in the county had led to the flooding situation, according to state news agency IRNA.

The videos posted on local and social media showed the cars caught in the rising waters and carried away while parents tried to rescue their children from the vehicles.

The floods happened on a summer weekend in Iran, when families tend to head to cooler areas such as riversides, lakesides and valleys.

According to Al Jazeera, Iran has endured repeated droughts over the past decade, but contrary, the country has also faced floods in the region. This phenomenon is made worse when torrential rain falls on sun-baked earth.

Photos released by Iran’s Red Crescent showed rescuers walking on cracked dry soil while others worked among reeds.

Scientists said that climate change amplifies extreme weather, including droughts as well as the potential for the increased intensity of rain storms.

Earlier, in 2019, 76 people were found dead in Southern Iran and causing damage estimated at more than USD 2 billion.

In January, two people were initially reported killed in flash flooding in Fars province when heavy rains hit the area, but the toll rose to at least eight there and elsewhere in Iran’s south. Demonstrations have occurred against the drying up of rivers, particularly in central and southwestern Iran. (ANI)

‘People Have Issues With Ranveer – With Clothes Or Without’

Tuhina Singh, a school teacher in Greater Noida West, says she can’t understand the outrage over a nude photoshoot when our scriptures & sculptures celebrate nudity

I remember it was a regular day at the gym when I received a text from one of my besties which read: ‘Have you seen Ranveer Singh’s nude photoshoot?’ The message was followed by a couple of pictures she had mentioned. My jaw dropped when I saw those pictures clicked for a fashion magazine. The response from my treadmill buddies was divided. One drooled by saying, “What a sight to wake up to!” and another said: ‘Holy shit’.

Ranveer, who bared it all for a photoshoot, lying like a man unaware of the consequences his boldness might trigger, looks like a million bucks. Like me, countless jaws dropped on the day after he raised the bar and dropped the clothes.

As for those who are outraged with the photos, they had problems with Ranveer even when fully clothed too. It reminds of the adage: ‘Kuch to log kahengay, logo ka kaam hai kehna.’ As a celebrity, it is Ranveer’s calling to be in news and limelight. He must look good, stay popular and draw attention. He has only fulfilled his professional role, in a bold way.

People in all profession some time push the envelope. All of us try to raise the bar by putting in extra efforts so that we can exceed expectations, get promotions, and to move up the ladder. Ranveer’s act is very similar to that. He is merely promoting himself. Big deal, huh!

Tuhin says celebrities like Milind Soman (inset) have faced similar criticism earlier

This is not the first time that an FIR has been filed against an actor for posing naked. Milind Soman and Madhu Sapre faced it long ago, when people found an advertisement that they featured in ‘obscene’. Rahul Khanna teased fans with his nude pic a few days back. I still remember we had a nervous giggle when John Abraham in the movie Dostana, teasingly pulled down his boxers.

On a serious note, it begs the question though –is this nationwide outrage against nudity justified? After all, the bulk of our ancient scriptures and sculptures, including the ones decorating the famous Khajuraho and Konarak temples, are a testament to our broad-minded outlook on sex.

Back then, women walked around the streets topless and men treated it as the norm. The practice of shedding the cloth that obscured the body was seen as a rejection of the doctrine that referred to the body as a sexual object. It was the British Raj that left a Victorian influence on India on what is prude and civilised. Nudity then began to be regarded as an impediment to the progress.

I fail to understand why a nude photoshoot has become the talk of the nation. We should feel outrage when a girl is harassed in plain sight, at objectification of humans, disrespectful comments and rape threats to outspoken women on social media. How selective our moral sentiments are getting hurt. As long as men and women are proudly embracing their bodies, I believe, all is well.

As told to Deepti Sharma

Five things That Happened Last Week (and what to make of them)

Of nude shoots, prudes, and fuss about the frivolous

Two years ago, long before the prevailing and, might I add, asinine controversy over the Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh’s nude photo shoot for the New York-based fashion and pop culture magazine, Paper, broke out, veteran model and actor, Milind Soman, tried an experiment. He shared a photo of himself and another model, Madhu Sapre, who was then his girlfriend. The photo shows both the models in the nude and was shot for an advertising campaign for a sports shoe brand. It was shot in 1995; Soman was then 30 and Sapre 24. Both are now in their 50s.

I remember when the ad came out in a couple of Mumbai newspapers. The internet was still a pie in the sky. Social media was non-existent. And in August that year (1995), the first mobile call was made by the then chief minister of West Bengal, the late Jyoti Basu, to the then Union minister for communications, the late Sukh Ram. The ad showed the two models naked except for their sneakers (it was an ad for those, after all) and in a Garden of Edenesque twist, there was also a large python entwined with them.

As expected there was a mixed reaction to the ad. Some people (this writer included) quite liked the black and white photograph of the two models. Sapre, a former Miss India, and Soman, who was also a swimming champion and runner, had chiselled bodies; and the photograph was aesthetic, not vulgar. And, it did what a good ad is supposed to do: it drew the reader’s attention.

But then, far from being homogenised, India exists on different levels, with moral standards, and cultural mores so diverse that different groups of people can seem from different planets and centuries. So yes, there was controversy. People called for banning the ad. The Social Service Branch (yes, there is such a thing!) of the Mumbai Police booked him and Sapre. I can’t quite remember what happened to the case–but the protests over the ad lasted for a while. They were nowhere near the mindless mayhem that Singh’s photo shoot has now led to.

That is exactly what Soman’s experiment two years ago was all about. He tweeted the 1995 photograph and wanted to gauge how people would react to it now in the age of social media when everyone, regardless of maturity, prejudices, and motivation, has access to a keypad to give vent to whatever they would like to say. The tweet got modest reactions (18500 likes; 997 retweets; and a bunch of comments, not many of which were overly indignant).

The difference between the Soman and Sapre photo shoot and Ranveer Singh’s recent one is that the latter has happened at a time when Indian society is more polarised and divided than it has ever been before. Outrage is easily triggered by almost anything. Much of it fuelled by so-called religious differences, with the minority community, especially Muslims, bearing the brunt of the violent, and hateful onslaught by an increasingly vocal (and social media-driven) majority. The problem is compounded by the fact that India’s institutions have been rendered weak and vulnerable to political pressure. Cases such as the FIR filed against Singh for his photo shoot should ideally be dismissed on grounds of frivolity but, in reality, the actor will likely be harassed meaninglessly.

What is offensive, obscene or overtly against Indian culture is a subjective question with different answers if you ask different groups of Indians. And, often, the responses are underlaid with elements of hypocrisy. There are at least seven ancient Indian temples whose facades are adorned with explicit erotic sculptures. In some temples, everything from heterosexuality, homosexuality, polyandry, polyamory, masturbation, and bestiality, is depicted in detail. I am actually waiting for a campaign to be fanned up by some ultra-prudish groups to demand that such temple art should be covered because after thousands of years 8konark was built in 1250 AD; Khajuraho temples between 885 and 1000 AD, the keepers of Indian morals feel that they are offensive. That sort of a campaign would surely establish that we’re finally in cuckoo land.

Bring back the corporate battles, it’s getting boring in here

In the 1980s and the early 1990s, before Indian policymakers began opening up the economy, easing restrictions, allowing unfettered foreign investment, doing away with licensing, and freeing up imports, running businesses in India could seem like running a torturous obstacle race. Obtaining licences, permits, and various other procedures could often become a Kafkaesque nightmare. Then there was the stock markets. The opacity and lax regulations gave big operators and insider traders a free hand. Markets could be moved by cartels and individuals, often at their whim, and there was not much anyone could do.

Much of all that has changed now. Mostly for the better. But there is one thing that keen observers of India’s corporate world must certainly be missing: intense corporate rivalries of that era. In the days of industrial licensing, most industries had just a few players that dominated the field. And that gave rise to the sort of corporate warfare that is rarely seen today. At the centre of most stories of Indian corporate wars there was usually one business group, Reliance Industries, founded by feisty entrepreneur, the late Dhirubhai Ambani. Reliance’s battles with older Indian groups such as Bombay Dyeing, Tatas, and Birlas, are the stuff of Indian business lore.

For journalists who covered corporate news in that era, those were exciting times. You got tip-offs about the dirty laundry of a competitor from a rival group and vice versa. Sometimes the rivalry could resemble a thriller or potboiler straight out of a film. For instance, in 1989, a case was filed alleging a conspiracy by an executive at Reliance to murder Bombay Dyeing’s top boss, Nusli Wadia. The allegations have not been proved but, here’s the thing that case is still alive with hearings and so on held periodically!

Compared to that era, corporate warfare is a tame affair today. Recently, Gautam Adani, the Gujarat-based entrepreneur with interests in ports, power, and other infrastructure sectors, was in the news when he was estimated to be worth US$12.2 billion, making him the fourth richest person overtaking Microsoft’s Bill Gates. Adani is now much ahead of India’s former richest billionaire, Mukesh Ambani, who is estimated to be worth US$90.9 billion.

But there’s more. If recent trends are to be construed, Adani, who has been diversifying into sectors such as cement and healthcare, is now eyeing the telecom sector by bidding for the government’s ongoing 5G spectrum auction.

If Adani gets a foothold into telecom, it could be the beginning of a rivalry in that sector. Ambani’s Jio Infocomm is the biggest player in the Indian telecom market with a share of more than 35%. Given his penchant for aiming big, if Adani enters the sector, it won’t be for small beer. And that could mean an impending corporate battle between the two. Journalists on the corporate beat should be anticipating some fun.’

In Bengal, another politico is embroiled in a scam

A corrupt politician is an archetype in India. So much so that the common Indian citizen is often so cynical that he or she tends to paint every politician with the same tarred brush. “Oh, if he’s a politician, he must be corrupt and have a hoard of unaccounted wealth.” Literally or otherwise, that’s a view that is nearly universal. So when Partha Chatterjee, 69, and a former minister in the Trinamool Congress-led West Bengal government was booked for being responsible for irregularities in a teacher recruitment scheme, it didn’t raise too many eyebrows.

The Enforcement Directorate, which is investigating the charges against Chatterjee, also recovered ₹50 cr in cash and gold worth several crores from the house of Arpita Mukherjee, an actor and singer who the media have been describing as Chatterjee’s ‘aide’, whatever that might mean.

For the moment, the minister has been divested of his portfolio and is in the directorate’s custody. There is, of course, a political consequence to this. The Trinamool Congress’s (TMC) supremo and West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, is a staunch critic and opponent of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The BJP has been trying desperately to get a foothold in the state. The scandal involving one of the state’s ministers will no doubt give the saffron party a handle to fight the TMC in the state.

Fresh twist in the Sunak-Truss race

After being in the lead for a while, Rishi Sunak is believed to be trailing behind Liz Truss in the race to become the next prime minister of the UK. Sunak, 42, is the former chancellor of the UK, while Truss, 47, is the former foreign secretary.

A betting exchange firm, Smarkets, has said that Sunak’s chances are down to 10% now and Truss’s are up to 90%. For a while, earlier, there was a perception that Sunak would win the race–it requires garnering votes from around 175,000 Conservative Party members. But now the tables seem to have turned. Both candidates are touring the country, campaigning for votes and we will have to wait till early September to know who finally wins.

Russia’s war in Ukraine enters sixth month

Soon it will be six months since Russia attacked Ukraine and the war escalated there. And there are little signs of an early end to the conflict. Russia has been continuing to shell on the frontlines of Ukraine and casualties have been mounting. Both sides, however, continue to make conflicting claims about killing each other’s troops.

In a recent development, however, Russia agreed to allow Ukraine to export wheat, 22 million tonnes of which are stranded at Ukrainian ports. According to Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy, Ukraine is waiting for a go-ahead from the United Nations and Turkey for a safe passage of its ships.

Meanwhile, western observers continue to say that Russia is running out of steam but the conflict doesn’t seem to be heading for an end. And although both countries claim that they have attacked and killed tens of thousands, no reliable tally is as yet available.

Airtel Launches 5G Services In Pune | Lokmarg

5G Spectrum Bids Value Reach ₹1,49,967 Crore On Day 5

The Central government received bids worth Rs 1, 49,967 crore at the end of the fifth day of the 5G spectrum auction on Saturday.

According to the Union Ministry of Communications, Electronics and Information Technology, seven rounds of bidding were conducted on Saturday. The value of total bids received after the 30th round of the auction stood at Rs 1, 49,967 crore.

The auction will continue on the sixth day on Sunday.

On the opening day of the auction on Tuesday bids worth Rs 1.45 lakh crore were received. Four rounds of spectrum bidding were done on the first day.

Wednesday saw five rounds of the auction, taking the total rounds to nine.

On the third day of the auction on Thursday, another seven rounds of auction were conducted taking the number to 16.

On the fourth day of the auction on Friday, the government received bids worth Rs 1,49,855 crore after 23 rounds of bidding.

Four firms are in the fray for the 5G auction. These firms are – Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, Bharti Airtel Limited, Vodafone Idea Limited and Adani Data Networks Limited.

Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio has been the most aggressive in the bids followed by Sunil Bharti Mittal-led Bharti Airtel.

This is evident from the earnest money deposit (EMD) done by the firms. Put together the four companies have deposited Rs 21,800 crore as EMD.

More than half of this amount is by Reliance Jio Infocomm, which is the largest telecom operator in India. Reliance Jio Infocomm has put in Rs 14,000 crore as EMD followed by Bharti Airtel Limited at Rs 5,500 crore.

Vodafone Idea Limited has deposited Rs 2,200 crore as EMD for the 5G auction while EMD amount of Adani Data Networks stands at Rs 100 crore.

EMD amounts give a broad indication of the company’s plan for picking up the spectrum in an auction. The EMD determines the eligibility points, through which telcos target a specific amount of spectrum in a given circle.

With its EMD at Rs 14,000 crore, the eligibility points assigned to Reliance Jio Infocomm for the auction stand at 1,59,830, DoT data showed. Eligibility points allocated to Bharti Airtel stand at 66,330 and for Vodafone Idea Limited it stands at 29,370. The eligibility points allocated to Adani Data Networks Ltd are the lowest at 1,650. RBI Has Done A Good Job In Raising Forex Reserves: Rahuram Rajan

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has done a good job in increasing the foreign exchange reserves and the country would not face the economic problems like Sri Lanka and Pakistan, former RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan said.

We have sufficient foreign exchange reserves. RBI has done a good job in increasing the reserves. We are not having problems like Sri Lanka and Pakistan. Our foreign debts are also less, Rajan told ANI.

According to the latest RBI data, India’s foreign exchange (forex) reserves stood at $571.56 billion for the week ended July 22.

During the week ended July 22, the forex reserves dropped by $1.152 billion.

According to the Reserve Bank of India’s weekly statistical supplement, the forex reserves declined during the week ended July 22 only because of the drop in foreign currency assets. All other components of the forex reserves registered gains during the week.

India’s foreign currency assets, which are the biggest component of the forex reserves, fell by $1.426 billion to $510.136 billion during the week ended July 22. The foreign currency assets had declined by $6.527 billion during the week ended July 15 and by $6.656 billion in the previous week.

Expressed in US dollar terms, the foreign currency assets include the effect of appreciation or depreciation of non-dollar currencies like Euro, UK’s Pound Sterling and Japanese Yen held in the foreign exchange reserves.

There was increase in other components of the forex reserves. The value of gold reserves rose by $145 million to $38.502 billion during the week ended July 22.

The value of India’s Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) with the International Monetary Fund rose by $106 million to $17.963 billion during the week under review, the RBI data showed.

India’s reserve position in the International Monetary Fund (IMF) rose by $23 million to $4.96 billion during the week ended July 22, as per the RBI Weekly Statistical Supplement.

On inflation, Rajan said the hike in policy rates by the Reserve Bank of India would help in reducing the inflationary pressure.

At present, there is inflation all over the world. RBI is increasing interest rate which will help in reducing inflation. Most inflation is in food and fuel. As we can see food inflation is coming down in world & will decrease in India also, he said. (ANI)

Sufi Council Demands Ban On Popular Front Of India

Muslim clerics unanimously supported the demand for a ban on the Popular Front of India (PFI) at the interfaith conference organised by the All India Sufi Sajjadanashin Council (AISSC) here on Saturday and called for steps against any misuse of social media to promote hatred.

The conference was attended by National security Advisor Ajit Doval who said some elements are trying to create an atmosphere that’s vitiating the progress of India and every sect of India should feel that “we are a country together”.

Syed Naseeruddin Chishty, Chairman All India Sufi Sajjadanashin Council, said that slogans like ‘sar tan se juda’ are anti-Islamic. “There is a Taliban thought, it should be countered on the ground instead of closed rooms…Be it PFI or other radcial organisations, the government should ban them,” he said.

Another cleric Syed Salman Husaini Nadwi, president of Jamiat Shabab-il-Islam, said Islam stresses religious tolerance. “There is no space for hate and agitation against any religion in India,” he said.

Maulana Kalbe Jawad Naqvi called for a ban on PFI and all fringe organizations that are involved in anti-India activities and are a threat to peace in society.

“In a country like India only the court is supreme and all religions have to follow and respect the decisions of courts. No religion can dictate to kill another person for the sake of religion,” he said.

In its resolution, All India Sufi Sajjadanashin Council said organisations like the Popular Front of India and any other such fronts, who have been indulging in anti-national activities and creating discord amongst our citizens must be banned and action initiated against them as per law.

The resolution said that targeting any God/Godesses/ Prophets in discussions or debates by anyone should be condemned and dealt with as per law.

The AISSC resolution proposed to create a new body, inclusive of all faiths, to spread the message of peace, harmony and fight against the radical forces.

The resolution recommended that any person or organisation found guilty with evidence of spreading hatred among the communities through any means must be acted upon as per the provisions of law.

In his remarks, Ajit Doval said some elements are trying to create an environment which is hindering India’s progress.

“Some elements are trying to create an atmosphere that’s vitiating the progress of India. They’re creating acrimony and conflict in the name of religion and ideology, it’s affecting the entire country while spilling over outside the country too,” Doval said.

“Instead of being mute spectators, we have to work on the ground on our differences along with strengthening our voices. We’ve to make every sect of India feel that we are a country together, we are proud of it and that every religion can be professed with freedom here,” he added.

The aim of the dialogue was to have a discussion among the representatives of different faiths – Hindu, Islam, Christianity, Sikhism, Buddhism and Jainism – about the growing religious intolerance in India.

The AISSC said in its release that the nation is going through tough times because of certain anti-social elements and groups who are trying to distort the image of India as a shining example of unity in diversity.

“India has been the land of various religions and faiths since ages. We share the history of peaceful coexistence. All religions teach fundamentally to love our countrymen without any discrimination. Islam and Sufism have also endorsed this very idea in India since 12th century. There is no space for hate and agitation against any religion in India,” the resolution said.

The resolution said it has been observed that social media platforms are being used for promoting hatred against religions and its followers. “We request the government to take serious note and initiate appropriate measures to curb the menace,” it said.

The resolution said Islam, Hinduism, Sikhism, Christianity, Jainism, Buddhism and all other religions teach respect for all human beings, to aspire for the common good of humanity.

“In these challenging times, it is the duty of all religious and community leaders to be role models for the present and future generations. All religions and communities need to prosper and co-exist in harmony for our country to realise its potential,” it said.

“We propose to create a new body, inclusive of all faiths, to spread the message of peace, harmony and fight against the radical forces. We seek support of everyone in furtherance of our mission,” it added.

All India Sufi SajjadaNasheen Council said they have decided to organise various events on regular basis at State and District levels, to spread the message of social and cultural harmony and brotherhood in India. (ANI)
