‘Victims of Religious Violence are Always from Poorer Section’

Anwar Ali, a Thrissur-based poet, filmmaker and lyricist for Malayalam cinema, condemns the Udaipur killing and says communalism and violence are being normalized in India. His views:

I condemn, I condemn, I condemn… I am sad, but not upset. For, we are all now used to with this kind of brutalities. If it had happened a few years back, it would have been truly shocking.

Communalism and its criminal acts have now become the ‘way of life’ in the India and the subcontinent. Though we cannot blame the insecure Muslim community as a whole for the Rajasthan incident, which is always the hidden agenda of the Hindutva Parivar, the aspects of hatred and criminality are the very same in killing, looting and setting fire to houses. If you closely watch the communal riots in India, the prey in most gruesome murders would be down-trodden people, mostly slum dwellers and the poor, either Hindus or Muslims.

Most nationalist agencies try to find the Pakistan connection of the accused, for their political gain from the narrative of Hindu-Muslim combat. They are not at all anxious about its consequences. They are least concerned to regain the socio-cultural harmony of South Asia which has been reverberated in the verses of Kabir, Bulle Shah, Basavanna, Mahadevi Akka and Narayana Guru.

Communal divide and caste discrimination are the order of this terrain. In history, it has been cohabited with harmony too. Art and culture always tried to compensate the killing fields of political power. Wherever war set fire, art poured rain.

Coming to the contemporary scenario, this kind of ‘othering’ between Hindus and Muslims has never happened in a pan-Indian scale before. Both global and territorial factors have made this acute situation; the corporate centrism of power across the nation-states and the legitimisation of Hindutva ideology and its successful regime in India.

Ali feels there has been an unprecedented ‘othering’ between Hindus and Muslims of late

Mob-lynching, attacks and demolitions have not only increased but have become acceptable to the so-called creamy layer of Indian civil society. Under this regime in Delhi, entire institutions of modern India are undermined. Several artists, journalists, intellectuals, students and activists are targeted. As Arundhati Roy observed recently, the downtrodden societies will rise up to fight it out, but we would have to spare a lot of our lives and blood before it.

Two decades back, in 1998, I had a chance to meet Eqbal Ahmad, the renowned Pakistani political scientist, during a conference in Delhi. Those days, I was trying to be a freelance journalist and did an interview with him. As a spokesman of secularism with a lead role in protecting the rights of Hindu minorities in his country, he was a big headache to the dictatorial Zia ul Haq regime for long. As a political migrant in the United States, he had created problems for Richard Nixon’s government during the ‘Viatnam War’ too. After my formal interview, he expressed his concerns about the gradual growth of political Islam in India after the demolition of Babri Masjid.

After his unexpected demise in 1999, I came to know that he had an Indian childhood and has been a victim of Partition. Eqbal Ahmad was born in a village near Gaya, where Buddha got enlightened. When he was a young boy, his father was murdered over a land dispute in his presence by a Hindu group. During the Partition, he and his elder brother migrated to Pakistan on foot. That means, he was a prey prior to Partition. After eventful explorations across the continents as an international academician and an anti-war activist, he returned to Islamabad in 1997. There, he fought for the rights of the Hindu minority in Pakistan. What a life!

The BJP and RSS do not represent any of the South Asian traditions of tolerance. Their ideology, derived also from Savarkar’s Hindutva, is one of the most racist and venomous in the modern world. They resemble Nazis in the 1930s and 40s. They and ISIS are birds of the same feather. How can they condemn the ideological killings and genocides?

Like genuine secularists and Muslims, so many genuine people who follow various Hindu religious practices, are deeply concerned towards the continuous victimization of Muslims in our country. That is why Hindus and Muslims in Jehangirpuri in Delhi reclaimed their native unity after the brutal demolitions by police.

Five years back, I wrote ‘Mehaboob Express – A Life Sketch’, a narrative poem which depicts the story of Mehaboob, a soldier, and his grandfather, a freedom fighter. It is also on the doom of our country; about a life-train crisscrossing undivided India. Passing the soundscape of history, it ends in the silence of Cochin Metro, inaugurated by the Indian PM in November, 2017.

Unfortunately, year after year, the poem does acquire new connotations prophesying the doom of the nation. A poet would have been proud that his text became a prophecy, but, how can I feel pride, while silence is growing, while surveillance is grinning, while justice departs judiciary?

Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan on Thursday wrote a letter to States/UTs and directed them to ramp up RT-PCR testing, surveillance, clinical management, vaccination, COVID-19 protocols and take timely pre-emptive actions. (ANI)

Norway Praises India’s Single-Use Plastic Ban

Norway’s charge d’affaires, Martine Aamdal Bottheim on Friday welcomed the Centre’s decision of ‘single-use plastic ban’ in India and congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi for taking the ‘important step.’

“I would really like to congratulate India and Prime Minister Modi for this important step of banning single use plastic items. This will reduce the amount of plastic that ends up in nature and in the oceans. And it will also reduce the amount of plastic that needs to be collected and recycled into the sea and it comes into the air that we breath,” Bottheim told ANI.
The Norwegian envoy highlighted the problem of pollution of the oceans and air and said, “We share the oceans and we share the air so this is a global problem,” adding that it is important that India should succeed in its effort.

Talking about the steps taken by the Norway embassy, the envoy said, “What we have done here at the Embassy today is that we have decided to eliminate single-use plastic items in our premises, including some that are not on the lists in India, like plastic bottles and I feel that the colleagues at the embassy are very supportive and very enthusiastic about this.”

She mentioned that Norway already abolished plastic items last year and yesterday, the Embassy had held a workshop with Indian Municipalities on sharing lessons learned on how to manage plastic waste.

The Centre’s guidelines to states asking them to ban the use of select single-use plastics came into effect on Friday.

Single-use plastics are typically items that are discarded after being used only once and do not go through the recycling process.

Earbuds with plastic sticks, plastic sticks for balloons, plastic flags, candy sticks, ice-cream sticks, polystyrene (thermocol) for decoration, plates, cups, glasses, cutlery such as forks, spoons, knives, straw, trays, wrapping or packing films around sweet boxes, invitation cards, and cigarette packets, plastic or PVC banners less than 100 microns and stirrers are categorized under the new reform.

The adverse impacts linked to littered single-use plastic items on both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems are globally recognized. (ANI)

Snake Island Back In Ukrainian Hands, Russia Finally Departs

Almost after four months after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the armed forces of Russia finally departed from the Snake Island on Thursday after occupying the strategic Black Sea outpost for months.

Snake Island, a tiny piece of land about 25 miles off Ukraine’s southeastern coast, sits on a major shipping lane and is an important access point to the key port of Odessa.
As per the report by The Washington Post, “the Ukrainian artillery, rockets and airstrikes this month pushed the Russians out of the Snake Island,” wrote Commander in chief of the Ukrainian armed forces, Valery Zaluzhny in a Facebook post.

He also shared a video of missiles hitting the island and claimed a week earlier it had taken out Russian anti-aircraft systems there. However, Russia denied its systems had been destroyed.

“Russian forces tried unsuccessfully to stymie the assault with nighttime fighter jet attacks on the coast of the Odessa region,” the Ukrainian military’s southern command said on Facebook.

As the Ukrainian military operation continued, Russian troops remaining on the island “hurriedly evacuated” the garrison on two speedboats, the statement added.

Taking to Telegram, Andriy Yermak, the head of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s office said “On Snake [Island] there are no more Russians,” stating further that the Ukrainian Armed Forces conducted a wonderful operation and knocked them out, the report said.

He also thanked foreign allies for weapons that aided the fight.

Meanwhile, Thursday’s withdrawal of Russian forces from the Ukrainian island also garnered widespread reactions in Ukraine and around the world.

“Congratulations Ukrainian warriors on your liberation of Snake Island!” Michael McFaul, US ambassador to Russia during the Obama administration, tweeted.

“Ukraine’s expulsion of Russian forces from Snake Island is a significant accomplishment for Kyiv and an important defeat for Russia,” the Russia team lead at the Institute for the Study of War, said in an emailed statement Thursday.

“Ukrainian forces are unlikely to reoccupy Snake Island themselves, but they don’t need to — they needed to get the Russians off it, and they did,” The Washington Post quoted Russia team Mason Clark as saying.

The Russian retreat from Snake Island may prove more significant as a symbolic victory for Ukraine as the action has weakened the blockings of Ukrainian ports.

However, Russia has not lifted its naval blockade and it can still threaten ships sailing to Odessa with its Black Sea fleet and land-based anti-ship weapons systems in Crimea and other parts of southern Ukraine, reported The Washington Post quoting Clark.

Ukraine is regarded as the “breadbasket of Europe” supplying 10 per cent of the world’s wheat, 12-17 per cent of the world’s maize and half of the world’s sunflower oil. Twenty-five million tonnes of corn and wheat – the entire annual consumption of all the least developed countries – can’t be exported and is currently at risk of rotting in Ukrainian silos.

Russia’s actions led to an increase in prices in countries like the UK and the blockade placed 47 million people around the world on the brink of humanitarian crisis as Moscow’s strategy always remained to seize Ukraine’s coastline since the start of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

On February 24, Russia began a military operation in Ukraine due to which almost 14 million Ukrainians have been forced to flee their homes, according to United Nations (UN) estimates and most of those displaced are women and children.

The conflict has left 15.7 million Ukrainians stranded and in need of humanitarian support, with some of them lacking access to water and electricity. Three million children inside Ukraine and over 2.2 million children in refugee-hosting countries are now in need of humanitarian assistance.

Almost two out of every three children have been displaced by incessant rocket attacks and fighting between the two nations. (ANI)

Modi Congratulates Yair Lapid For Becoming 14th PM Of Israel

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday congratulated Yair Lapid for becoming the 14th Prime Minister of Israel.

“Warm wishes and heartiest congratulations to His Excellency @yairlapid for assuming the premiership of Israel. I look forward to continue furthering our strategic partnership as we celebrate 30 years of full diplomatic relations,” tweeted PM Modi.
Yair Lapid officially became the 14th Prime Minister of Israel at the stroke of midnight between Thursday and Friday.

Lapid’s term could be the short one as he takes over the caretaker government ahead of Israel’s election which is scheduled to take place on November 1, The Times of Israel reported.

“We’ll do the best we can for a Jewish, democratic state, good and strong and thriving, because that is the job, and it’s bigger than all of us,” Lapid said at a handover ceremony with the outgoing Prime Minister Naftali Bennett on Thursday afternoon.

Meanwhile, PM Modi also thanked outgoing PM Bennett for being a true friend of India.

“Thank you His Excellency @naftalibennett for being a true friend of India. I cherish our fruitful interactions and wish you success in your new role,” tweeted PM Modi.

US President Joe Biden also congratulated Lapid for becoming the new Prime Minister. Taking to Twitter, he said, “Congratulations to @YairLapid, Israel’s new Prime Minister, and thank you to Alternate Prime Minister @NaftaliBennett for your friendship over the past year. “

“I look forward to seeing you both in July to celebrate the unbreakable US-Israel partnership,” Biden added.

Lapid is also scheduled to make a brief trip on July 5 to Paris, where he will meet with French President Emmanuel Macron, according to The Times of Israel.

On Sunday, Lapid is expected to convene the first weekly cabinet meeting of his premiership. Bennett is set to remain in the government as an alternate prime minister. He will also continue to hold responsibility for the country’s Iran policy.

Bannett announced on Wednesday that he has no plans to participate in the next parliamentary elections.

“Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has informed members of the right-wing faction of his intention not to run in the next election. Prime Minister Naftali Bennett will remain as an alternate prime minister,” Sputnik quoted his office as saying.

This announcement comes as the Israeli Knesset is set to vote on a proposal to hold an early election. The Yamina party leader served as the prime minister for a year. (ANI)

China Renews Yellow Alert For Typhoon Chaba

With the third typhoon of the year, Chaba moving closer to Southern China, the country’s meteorological authority renewed a yellow alert on Friday.

The typhoon which was observed on waters 250 km northeast of Yongxing Island in Hainan’s Sansha City at 5 a.m., will move northwestward at a speed of 15 to 20 km per hour, with slowly increased intensity, Xinhua reported citing the National Meteorological Center.
Affected by the typhoon, some areas in Hainan, Guangdong and Fujian provinces and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region will see heavy rainfalls and strong winds over the coming 24 hours

Moreover, Chaba is also expected to make landfall in coastal areas of Hainan or Guangdong between Saturday afternoon and evening.

As per the reports by Xinhua, the centre advised that ships and boats should take shelter at harbours while advising the relevant areas to take measures to avoid torrential floods and unforeseen geological disasters.

The typhoon was formed over the central and eastern areas of the South China Sea as meteorologists have warned the areas to take preventive measures and to ensure fruit and vegetable supplies.

A four-tier colour-coded weather warning system is followed in the country with red representing the most severe warning, followed by orange, yellow and blue.

On Wednesday, China issued a yellow alert for high temperatures and heatwaves in various parts of the country.

The forecast also mentioned that the temperature might reach 39 or 40 degrees Celsius in some of these regions. The residents were advised to avoid working outdoors during daylight hours and workers who are exposed to the high temperatures to take necessary preventive measures, the local media reported.

Earlier on Monday, China’s National Meteorological Center renewed its yellow alert for rainstorms in several parts of the country.

Due to severe thunderstorms and heavy rains, the centre has also advised halting outdoor operations in hazardous areas and urged airports, railways, expressways and water transportation units to take safety measures such as flight restrictions, speed limits, or temporary closures to ensure personnel and traffic safety.

A total of 548,000 people were affected due to the heavy rain in China’s Jiangxi province last Tuesday, according to the provincial flood control headquarters.

The local meteorological department had predicted further rainstorms in the province this week.

According to local authorities, the torrential rains and rain-induced floods since May 28 have wreaked havoc in 80 counties of the province. (ANI)

Pakistan: Looming LNG Shortage Crisis

In a major setback to Pakistan’s ongoing energy crisis, the country has failed to procure Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) at an “affordable” price.

The highest-ever bid that Pakistan accepted since it started LNG imports in 2015 was at USD 30.65 per mm Btu in November 2021. The state-run Pakistan LNG Ltd (PLL) floated a tender on June 16 for four LNG cargos — one each in the first and second weeks, and two in the last week, of July.
No bidder came up for July 2-3, July 8-9, and July 25-26 delivery windows. This was PLL’s ‘third’ failed attempt to have an LNG cargo in the first week of July.

Qatar Energy, a state-owned petroleum company of Qatar, had offered an LNG shipment at USD 39.8 per million British Thermal Unit (mmBtu), which would have been the “priciest” purchase for Pakistan had it not rejected the offer.

Presently, Pakistan is heading towards a severe energy crisis in the coming months without the proper LNG supply required to generate electricity, fuel industries, and household consumption.

The ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, emergency gas purchases by European countries and the continuing disruption in the global energy supplies because of the last two COVID-19 pandemic years have increased LNG prices significantly, thus making it difficult for a financially doomed country like Pakistan to purchase gas cargoes at affordable rates.

In order to avoid power outages during the Eid-ul-Fitr holiday last month, the government paid nearly USD 100 million to procure a single LNG shipment from the ‘spot’ market–where commodities are purchased for immediate delivery as opposed to a long-term arrangement–a record for the nation.

Pakistan is perhaps the worst hit by the ongoing global LNG supply crunch.

Consequently, the Shehbaz Sharif-led government has limited options to address the issue, which include buying gas at a high rate or in the sports market; maximising electricity generation from other fuels or facing more load shedding in the coming months. Several cities in Pakistan, including Lahore and Karachi, are facing up to 10-18 hours of load shedding per day.

On June 5, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif tasked a committee comprising ministers for Energy, Petroleum, and Finance to provide an ’emergency plan’ aimed at reduction in the electricity load shedding. Sharif also admitted that Pakistan did not have money to buy oil and gas.

The excruciatingly extended electricity outages have adversely affected local businesses and manufacturing units across Pakistan, further impacting the country’s dwindling economy. All this is also threatening the stability of Pakistan’s new political leadership, which is directly linked to the current economic instability in the country.

As an ominous sign of Pakistan’s dwindling economy, local textile producers are expecting a USD 500 million cut in monthly exports from July, as energy shortages have reduced production capacity by 30 per cent.

Furthermore, in the face of rising energy prices, Pakistan is facing a ‘balance of payment’ crisis with forex reserves falling below USD 10 billion, enough for around 45 days of imports, as well as double-digit inflation, In order to address the issue, Pakistan’s government is attempting to boost energy conservation, has cut working hours for public servants, and ordered shopping malls to factories to shut early in various cities including Karachi.

Moreover, coupled with rising coal and oil prices, these LNG rates have increased electricity fuel costs by more than 100 per cent in Pakistan, which is evident from the recent PKR 7.95 per unit “additional monthly adjustments” claimed by Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) distribution companies and over PKR 11.38 per unit claimed by K-Electric Limited for the July month.

Besides recovering additional costs spent on importing petroleum products at higher prices, the government has substantially increased electricity rates and cut subsidies as a key condition to resume the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) USD 6 billion financial programmes for Pakistan.

For the moment, increased power rates are exacerbating economic woes for the common people and causing socio-political instability across the country. As an urgent measure to generate electricity, Pakistan may increasingly rely on coal-based power projects. According to some reports, the United States-based company M/s Spinnaker-Project 1, LLC has offered a minimum quantity of 0.5 million tons of coal to Pakistan per annum on 270 days revolving “credit facility” against Government of Pakistan (GOP) guarantees.

Since Pakistan cannot afford to purchase LNG cargoes at increased rates, it is looking for short-term measures like the coal import on credit to address the load shedding issue. But the truth is, the current energy crisis in Pakistan was a long time in the making.

Pakistan has been in the grip of power outages that have ranged between three and seven hours a day even before the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) government came to power in April. Therefore, any hasty measure to resolve the LNG shortage crisis may not provide enough breathing space to Pakistanis, who are looking at severe power outages in the coming weeks. (ANI)

China Urges Indian Not To Hold Proposed G20 Event In J-K

China on Thursday urged to “avoid politicizing” the issue of the proposed G20 event in Jammu and Kashmir (J-K) to be organized by India.

Zhao Lijian, the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson while responding to a question on the proposed G20 event by India said that instead of focussing on the planned event, major economies should focus on the steady recovery of the world economy after the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The G20 is the premier forum for international economic and financial cooperation. We call on all major economies to focus on the steady recovery of the world economy, avoid politicizing relevant cooperation and make a positive contribution to improving global economic governance,” said Zhao.

He said that China’s position on Kashmir is consistent and clear-cut. It is a legacy issue between India and Pakistan. It should be properly resolved in accordance with the relevant UN resolutions and bilateral agreements.

Comments from China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson come after Pakistan rejected any Indian plans of holding certain G20 events in J-K.

Pakistan is reaching out to its close allies in the group of twenty – China, Turkey and Saudi Arabia to boycott the G20 meeting in Jammu and Kashmir.

India is set to assume the presidency of the G20 in December this year. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal was appointed as India’s Sherpa for the G20 in September 2021.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, India will hold the G-20 presidency from December 1, 2022, and convene the first G20 leaders’ summit in 2023.

India’s representation at G20 summits has been led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi since 2014.

Pakistan has already rejected the proposed meeting, official sources told The Express Tribune that Islamabad would reach out to G20 countries on the issue.

Sources said Pakistan would particularly approach countries like China, Turkey and Saudi Arabia to convey their concerns.

Islamabad would also speak to the US, the UK and other G20 members in order to counter Indian plans, The Express Tribune reported.

Recently in March, India hosted an investment conference from Gulf countries in J-K. Entrepreneurs and CEOs from different countries including Dubai, UAE, and Holland were present at the summit. Delegates from over 36 countries attended the event.

The Gulf countries’ venture into Jammu and Kashmir is a signal to Pakistan which has been harping on the propaganda about Kashmir being a problem that needs to be settled and Muslim countries should support its argument.

Zhao also defended China laying out and implementing the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor through the disputed area in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

He said, “What you mentioned are two matters completely different in nature. China has undertaken some projects in Pakistan to help it grow its economy and improve people’s livelihood. These projects are in Pakistan-occupied areas of Kashmir. Relevant Chinese companies conduct the relevant projects with the purpose of helping Pakistan to develop its economy and improve people’s livelihood.”

However, on the question of China attending the summit in Kashmir, Zhao said, “I already outlined China’s position. We will look at whether China will attend the meeting.”

The G20 countries include Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, France, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the United States and the United Kingdom. (ANI)

Pilgrims For Amarnath Yatra Formally Welcomed At Nashri By District Commissioner

The first batch of pilgrims who kickstarted their journey from Jammu on Wednesday morning reached Ramban in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday morning where they were formally welcomed at Nashri by the District Commissioner.

The Yatra began on Wednesday from Jammu amid tight security arrangements by the security forces including Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Indian Army and the local police.
Speaking to ANI, Ramban District Commissioner Mussarat Islam said, “As per our reports, almost 6000 devotees will leave Balkan and Pahalgam to reach the holy cave. We’ve put up langar at a lot of crucial, tactical spots for our tourists’ convenience.”

Amid the ongoing Amarnath Yatra, Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district has been seen a communal harmony, brotherhood and coexistence.

The Pahalgam-bound pilgrims had their breakfast at a Langar in Nashri while Baltal-bound pilgrims had their breakfast in Langars at Chanderkot.

At both these places, the locals from all sections of society had helped the religious and philanthropic organizations of Jammu province and various north Indian states to establish the langars.

Meanwhile, the poor vendors and shopkeepers along the Amarnath Yatra route have been selling food, fruits and other things to pilgrims and earning their livelihood.

“I am very excited to see the Yatra which resumed after two years. All fruits were sold within an hour which normally used to take a whole day,” said Mohammed Aftab who sells fruits at Nashri.

Another eatery vendor Rahil Ahmed said, “I wish the peace in Kashmir and Yatra should be concluded peacefully and smoothly without any disruption by militants so that more pilgrims come here and I could earn more for my livelihood.”

The Amarnath shrine pilgrimage to the 3,880-metre-high cave shrine of Lord Shiva, located in the upper reaches of the Himalayas, is held from the twin routes of Pahalgam and Baltal.

The Jammu and Kashmir government had cancelled the annual Amarnath pilgrimage due to the prevailing COVID-19 situation in 2020 and 2021 after a discussion with Amarnathji Shrine Board members.

Security has been tightened in Jammu and Kashmir with special emphasis on the use of over 130 sniffer dogs on the vehicle routes heading towards the shrine to ensure safe pilgrimage amid heightened terror threats.

A top government official, requesting anonymity, told ANI that this is the first time when the security forces have been using a maximum number of sniffer dogs to check the use of explosives by terrorists to disrupt the 43-day annual pilgrimage beginning on June 30. (ANI)

PM Modi Extends Greetings For Jagannath Rath Yatra In Puri

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday extended greetings on Jagannath Rath Yatra in Puri and wished for everyone’s good health and happiness.

“Greetings on the special day of Rath Yatra. We pray to Lord Jagannath for his constant blessings. May we all be blessed with good health and happiness,” PM Modi said in a tweet.
The Pahandi rituals for the Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath began in Odisha’s Puri. The participation of devotees in the Rath Yatra has been allowed this time after a gap of two years following the COVID pandemic.

After due rituals, the three Raths of Lord Jagannath, Devi Subhadra and Lord Balabhadra have been pulled and put stationed in front of the Singha Dwara of the Shreemandira on Thursday itself.

PM Modi also shared a clip of what he had said about the Rath Yatra and its importance in Indian culture during the Mann Ki Baat on June 26.

Emphasising the role of the Yatras in Indian culture, the Prime Minister in his monthly radio broadcast Mann Ki Baat had said the pilgrimages in the country do not just offer spiritual vibes but also create opportunities to serve the poor.

“Upanishads mention a life mantra-‘Charaiveti-Charaiveti-Charaiveti’. It means keep going, keep going. This mantra is so popular in our country because it is part of our nature to keep moving and be dynamic. As a nation, we have come this far through a journey of development spanning thousands of years,” he had said in the 90th episode of ‘Mann Ki Baat’.

“Our cultural mobility and travels have contributed a lot to this. That is why our sages and saints had entrusted us with spiritual responsibilities like a pilgrimage. All of us go on varied pilgrimages,” he said.

PM Modi said a large number of devotees participated in the Chardham Yatra this year.

Referring to Lord Jagannath Rath Yatra, Prime Minister said, “In our country, different Dev-yatras also take place time to time. In Dev Yatras, not only the devotees but also our Gods go on a journey. In just a few days from now on July 1, the famous journey of Lord Jagannath is going to commence. All of us are familiar with the Puri yatra in Odisha. People make efforts to ensure that on this occasion they get the good fortune of going to Puri.”

The Ratha Yatra, also known as the Chariot Celebration of Lord Jagannath, Devi Subhadra, and Lord Balabhadra, is the most prominent Hindu festival in the Puri city of Odisha. This festival takes place every year on the second day of the Shukla Paksha in the months of June or July. This year the festival falls on July 1.

The three chariots are built a new, every year ahead of the annual chariot festival.

Vibrant colours, enthusiastic faces, crowded shops, and cheery craftspeople are just a few of the highlights of Rath Yatra in Puri, the popular Chariot celebration held on a big scale every year outside Jagannatha Temple. (ANI)
